Fantastic short video essay! I only realized that this video had less than 1k views after I was finished with it, but your points are fantastic and I love your casual explanation-style, really makes for a great video. Looking forward to see what you create in the future.
I like your point of view... Both stories are about tragedy. But the thing in Palm Springs is that Cristin Milioti quite recognizes the situation and doesn't stay in the shock of being just absorve by a weird force that ruined her life. Its like Andy Samberg just dont want to fix the loop, because even thinking about it makes him feel depressed by his situation. Deep content ....
YES 100%! also idk if writers did it intently but character background x environment for mental foundation was wonderfully made. In this situation Sarah is strength to become our hero while Nyles is weakened into our depressed love interest. Sarah's memories and past are consistently supported. Sister of the bride, more rooted in connection to event / wedding's guest (her family) whereas Nyles is only seen as the plus one stranger, it's easier to accept all as npcs. His only hold on identify is his cheating gf but from what she hints Nyles was already a depressed guy and how she treats him shows that past Nyles already had the weak mentality to remain in a bad situation in contrast to Sarah who left a bad marriage before. Kinda foreshadowing. I like these similarities of them and how we see both wake up with bad people who cheat but Sarah grows stronger with hope to get out of it, while Nyles we can assume further pushed him into becoming more nonchalant until our main character Sarah shows up, changing his outlook on life and saving him along with Roy from the loop.
Just rewatched the film, found this video by accident. I think you're right on the money, except that Andy's character Nyles DEFINITELY knew Cristin's character Sarah would follow him into the tunnel. Even before she gets stuck it's well established that she's a contrarian and will do the opposite of what she's told, and Nyles has known Sarah for potentially hundreds of years at this point. So I think it's plausible/very likely that Nyles intentionally baited Sarah to follow him after he was attacked by Roy. I actually think it's likely it's not the first time Nyles has brought people besides Roy into the loop. Nyles mentions earlier that "they all go away eventually." We also learn from the post credits scene when Roy meets a non-looping Nyles that escaping the loop "resets" that person in the loop, rather than deleting them like Sarah says about the goat. Nyles even asks about the goat as they're leaving (implying some knowledge of escaping the loop), and Sarah leaves it ambiguous to whether or not she lied to him and if the goat actually vanished. The Grandma also seems to be looping, since she makes a rather vague statement after Sarah's speech, mentioning "now that you're leaving." If you want to expand it out even further, I think that you can watch the film with the theory that it's not even the first time that Nyles has brought Sarah into the loop, which given her capacity to learn quantum physics is totally possible. The immediacy which he lies about having not slept with her hints at him knowing that telling her would not go well, potentially from past experience. Even with this theory, I do think it's probably the first time that Sarah has come to Nyles to ask him to leave with her though. My assumption is that in past loops with a looping Sarah, Nyles told her they had slept together, she learns Quantum Physics and escapes the loop alone, leaving Nyles with a reset Sarah and a decade or two of depression. Edit: Oh WOW, i just realized, given the fact that Sarah sends a message to Roy in the post credits sequence, it's entirely possible that it's not the first time Nyles has brought Roy into the loop either, since if Sarah tells Roy how to escape and Roy and Nyles never have their heart to heart at Roy's house, Roy might not go ask Nyles if the escape explosion would work. So it's possible that Roy and Sarah usually escape the loop together. WHICH, might mean that Nyles intentionally brings Roy into the loop, intentionally aggravates him, seduces Sarah bringing her near the cave, and gets shot on purpose just to bait Sarah in.
This seems like it's over-thinking it a bit? If Nyles wants to trick Sarah into following him he doesn't need Roy (whom he does not control) to do it. He could just lead her to the cave, say "wow what's that?" and in the go. It's also not really in his character to want her in the loop, if he just wants to hook up with her he knows the moves to do it. I think Sarah ending up in the loop is played straight, Nyles is speedrunning hooking up with her and Roy's attack puts him into a scenario he hasn't practiced. As we see from the Roy montage, Roy likes to change it up. Nyles is improvising. Not well, but he's improvising (if he thought about it for 2 seconds he'd exit the cave, knowing Roy has already looped, and get her to help him back to the vila and call him an ambulance). I think if there's a meta-looping mastermind it's probably actually Nana. I think she heard the day before she has aggressive cancer or something so she's got like a few weeks to live and she wants to stay in the loop. If she's looping for long enough she will eventually, whether intentionally or not, pull someone in with her. Sneeze at the wrong time and it will set off a Rube-Goldbergeqsue chain of events where someone starts looping, it's inevitable if you roll the dice enough. She can easily tell when someone is looping with her when they start acting out (and they don't notice her because she's not), and she might have seen that people eventually figure out how to leave, and perhaps, how they do it. Whether or not they know quantum physics, blowing up the cave is an obvious move so maybe people always inevitably try it.
Cristin Milioti's character journey is the reason why I absolutely love this movie
agreed
As a lover of Palm Springs, and of Nerdwriter1’s Passengers essay, gotta say I LOVE this!
Interesting. I didn’t see the similarities until now.
right on - i didn't really either until this latest rewatch of Palm Springs

thanks, dude
Great video! I'm sure your audience will grow. Slowly but steady, you'll get there. (Just subscribed btw)
ha! thanks
very cool! i'm gonna have to give palm springs a watch
high recommend
great video, absolutely loved this movie.
subscribing quick, so I can say I'm an og when your channel gets big

Dude this was amazing you deserve more subs
cheers. much appreciated
Ok but can we talk about the old dude that is still in the timeloop?
What is there to talk about? He knew he was trapped in the loop, and chose to stay. What is there to talk about?
