    If your like me, working with Jack stands, and not wanting to waste time and effort removing things that are not necessary, we'll hear this,.... Get it up off the ground, remove the 2 strap nuts on the pump side only, make sure to have a jack to support the pump side only and lower the jack / tank, leav8ng the straps on the tank and rest the pump side on the ground. No need to remove strap bolts on fill side, no need to remove fill hose, no need to remove fuel lines. Now remove the pump and replace it. Jack the tank, install 2-strap bolts ,NUFF SAID.

    I have a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. I replaced the fuel pump about a year ago. In the past several days, the van was very difficult to start and there was a constant strong gasoline smell coming from the van, whether it was running or not. The problem is a bad fuel pressure regulator, which is located inside the fuel pump assembly (as shown in this video). Apparently this is a very common problem with this generation of Dodge mini-vans.

    Even though this may not be the same procedure for my Gen 3 Caravan, I watched the entire video, because I honestly appreciate you showing that clips and electrical plugs don't always come out as easily as they should in theory. I'm quick to blame my lack of knowledge, strength, and size (and being female) when I run into a problem removing one of those things. I feel vindicated. Thank you!
    Now I should probably look for a video for a Gen 3 Caravan fuel pump replacement.

    Helped my son replace the fuel pump and unfortunately broke off the small nipple
    on the rollover valve assembly that is integrated into the tank, so rather than
    replacing the tank I found an assortment of small brass and aluminum of random
    short lengths at a hobby store and luckily it contained one about an inch in length
    that fit the tubing that connects to it and by using a small drill the same diameter
    as the brass tubing and turning the drill bit by hand as not to go too deep or
    wobble out the hole in the plastic on the tank fitting with a little epoxy or similar
    gasoline resistant adhesive spread on the end going into the hole it has worked
    perfectly for over a year.

    Warning: releasing the tank from the five screws that hold it in-place is a piece of cake. Releasing the three connectors of lines going to the pump and fuel filter takes some doing. But most critical, disconnect the line/hose going from the rollover valve to the canister. I did this, but left the hose hanging from the van’s frame. When I tried to pull the tank out, the hose broke the tip (plastic) of the rollover valve. This valve does no come out (it is integral part of the tank), so I had to buy a tank.

  • @user-gv4bf4zx2s
    @user-gv4bf4zx2s 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Conceptually, procedurally... piece o cake. Unfortunately for me, i didn’t have access to a lift and I had just filled the tank the night before, so there was about 170 lbs of fuel in it, and my jack only went up about 14 inches, I had to do this in the sun, in south florida, in July... I almost passed out from heat exhaustion.
    If you have to do this with car jacked (not on lift) I suggest getting a piece of wood and using a car hydraulic jack to carefully lift tank into place. You can also fasten the rear bolts for the suspension brackets and then ‘slide’ tank back and up into position. Do not for get the filler hose line *before* you are all the way back up. .

    Very helpful. We have a fuel leak coming from the top of the fuel tank in our '05 Grand Caravan (Sto & go). The engine runs but requires several tries to get it to actually start. This I'm sure is due to the fuel system not completely sealed and the fuel pressure needing to build back up to the throttle body. I saw that fuel was streaming from the back and front of the fuel tank as the engine was running. The only thing I can think of is that one of the fuel return line connections or hoses is leaking and the fuel is pooling on the top of the tank. This video helped to answer a couple of questions regarding other possible connections on top. I noticed two smaller white discs with fuel lines connected to them besides the fuel pump. I presume those are part of the fuel return system.

    • @cealigh1260
      @cealigh1260 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So, replaced the fuel pump. Ran a test and sure enough, the pump was working fine but gas was still coming from the top of the tank. Dropped the tank again and checked all of the connections. Sure enough, there was gas sitting on top of the tank just below where the fuel line connects to the pump. Turns out that the plastic clip that connects the main fuel line to the pump was the problem. Replaced a $5 part and the fuel leak stopped. Go figure!

    Had to modify my part by cutting about 3/8 squre" from the nylon flange to properly clock. Sugest take a pix and make sure location and angle of nipples is the same. The tubes must route the same to avoid getting pinched by the tank. In retrospect this is an item brand mopar may be worth using for perfect fittment.great video. To relieve fuel pressure : Remove fuel filler cap, start engine, remove fuel relay from the fuse box, engine will run, then stall. Crank engine a few more times to make sure it won't start. Turn ignition to off, disconnect neg battery terminal before working on the system. If you have more than a half of a tank, you can take some gas out at the air intake area using a bypass on the fuel relay.

    • @TheAksleepy
      @TheAksleepy ปีที่แล้ว

      If the fuel pump will not run then IMO there is no way to drain fuel out of the tank. I'm working on removing one of these right now and unfortunately the tank is full. :( Any idea what the lines are that cross under the tank and go towards the front and rear of the vehicle? How do you get them out of the way?

  • @MattJonesYT

    Also noticed that when you were trying to remove the one fuel line connector with the angled needle nose, that if it were possible to flip the pliers so they were gripping from the other direction if that would have worked out better in getting a proper grip on the squeeze tabs? Not seeing outside of that area of the video, I could not tell if there was some other component in the way preventing that. Just curious.

    Hey there, I love your vids they are a big time help! I have a question for you,
    In the beginning of the video you say "the fuel pump is around here somewhere" and you put your hand on the 2 half circle indents on the bottom of the tank... My question is, was that a guess cuz you weren't sure, and those half circles made sense being designed to be there for the pump? If so and that is exactly where the pump is could you get back to me and let me know? My 06 Grand caravan w/sto & go stopped running almost 2 weeks ago and after running through all the other possible problems it might be, it leaves me thinking I need a new fuel pump. The problem is that I broke my back a couple years ago and it's hard enough just getting under the van and back up. I do not see myself being able to drop the tank and I don't have any help, or money to take it to the garage. So I've decided it would be easier on me to just cut a hole through the floor instead. I've done the measurements from the side and back of my van to the center of those 2 indented half circles and marked the center point on the carpet inside, now I'm prepared to cut but I just want to make sure before I do. I'll be using a Dremel and discs to cut through and common sense already tells me to be careful doing it, so I got that all covered.
    Any advice or tips would be awesome!
    Thanks so much,
    Ryan

      Usually it is a complete unit which includes the float (fuel level). On Dodge Caravans of this time period the fuel filter is located on the top of the tank, it is in the tank itself on later models- good time to change it too while you have the tank dropped.

    ugggg I have to do this job but just to replace the O ring. for some reason gas is splashing out and leaking I stuck my phone up in there so I could see the top of the tank where the pump sticks out of it and took some video. I could see that the ring was rusted to shit. I have no idea why that would be on a 2004 town and country. how ever I went to the dealer and bought the lock ring and O ring and gonna attempt to change the O ring and lock ring but I have no lift. Im worried that Ill have lots of trouble any suggestions? I was thinking of doing it hillbilly style with blocks jack the van up and put some blocks under it. best I can do.

      It's a pain in the ass, ...but not too bad if you have a lockable floor jack or stands. Better empty the tank, disconnect the battery, lower the tank gently with another jack and use a piece of wood under the tank for uniform support while lowering. Take your time in well ventilated area, and make no sparks!
