This talk is one of the most thought-provoking ones I've listened to for a long time. Thanks for putting your ideas onto the internet David and thanks SETI Talks. Among other things this is an exploration of a potential paradigm shift of substantial magnitude.
I find it quite uplifting to come to a realization after listening to your talk that we humans are even now in a position (leaving aside the inevitable bickering) to formally announce, perhaps via the United Nations, that we, being the only species on Earth with the required intelligence and physical abilities, are going to seize the initiative and formally take on the responsibility of managing and looking after Earth and its biota and climate, while we continue to develop our science, cultures, and understanding of existence and our place in it. With a long-term goal to being the species controlling Earth for as long as we think it makes sense for us to do so, or we get ousted by extraterrestrials or something else goes amiss.
I'm in :-) Long Live the Anthropocene!

One good thing about lights relatively slow travel speed through the universe is that it'll make us unknown to any intelligent aliens for years to come. So hopefully we can get our shit together before then.... Assuming theyre there and assuming we're not the fist intelligent species to rise up out of the dirt and develop fantastic technologies.

    Hi folks,
thanks for sharing these videos and this one I particularly enjoyed.
With regards to predicting trends for the next 100 years, David Grinspoon may want to take a look at George's Friedman's excellent book : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Next_100_Years
The methodology and overall take on what may change and what may not change in human behaviour, is worth being exposed to.
    Keep on trucking !

Good talk. Lots of ideas and concepts to think about.
Also, I never heard about the *_Cambrian Substrate Revolution_* (20:17)

What are we talking about, the same things we talk about everyday, in different words. Rock On

God grant me the surrounding to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference.

I would think that we would study where and how a star and plant come from, how life can come into existence, before we started looking for little green men. Of course this speaks of the intelligence on Earth, as the doc said.

+Danny Voight Yeah. Where's Nanny when we need her! But most toddlers manage, even in unpromising circumstances. No promises, tho.

    Very interesting talk. Much appreciated.
By way of well intentioned criticism: please stop placing the phrase "so called" in front of words like "civilisation" and "intelligence". Neither of these words mean an infinite amount of good for everyone everywhere forever. They have a specific meaning. Passive aggressive expressions of cynical edginess of the variety described above is not an indication of enlightened wisdom, but of an inability to use words properly.

Interesting comment. Thank you. I think you might misunderstand my reason for using this qualifier in this context. I am in fact meaning to point out that these phrases do have specific meanings, and that our use of them should not go without some reflection on their meanings and whether our own levels of "intelligence" and "civilization" are somehow representative of what these phrases could mean when applied in a wider cosmic arena. I am not meaning to imply edgy cynicism but you have alerted me to the fact that it may be coming off that way, and for that I do thank you.

David Grinspoon That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Too much pseudo-scientific reasoning and generalisation in this talk for my liking.. Would highly recommend David Christian's Big History for a sounder survey of this topic. Still love you SETI talks.
