I cannot believe it took you guys 3 YEARS to figure out the message of this song. Truly was ahead of her time. She was awake before us, and now she can’t even crack the top 10 and she’s actually scared now to promote her music and speak up on political issues because of how twisted her words got and how traumatized she was from the hate over a haircut and songs with REAL MEANING. This is why this is one of my favorite Katy Perry songs. For awhile I just listened to the song because it was a bop. Then I actually listened and realized what she was actually saying. The song is incredibly hypnotic which allows you to be distracted from the horrors of the world.

Everyone who listened to the lyrics beyond the chorus knows it's a social critique, but people disagree on what it's critiquing. Is it criticizing people's inability to express their own opinions, or express them in a healthy way? Or does it criticize capitialism in the music industry? I think that Katy had good intentions, but she could've chose one specific theme and stuck to it, and I do agree that if her message was the first priority, she should've self-produced the song.

Well, it's a lot of things. It's technically not super deep, but it's one of my favorite songs of hers simply 'cause it's just like points at how we stick to the status quo of society even if it hurts us little, simply because it feels safe. Change is necessary to improve. But change is also scary, so we stick to what we know. That's why the song is about people chained to the rhythm, even though they can leave at any point. No one wants to leave because they feel safe where they are, even though we all know that something ain't right about that place.
