Thank for making this video, I just set up a mtx115 as a base station. I set the tones for the repeaters in area ( 12-45 miles) and made a cheat sheet so I know which is which. Works fine, and I am getting good reports of clear signal.

Nice walk through the features. Thanks. I have the MXT275 as I wanted all the display functions on the mic so I can hide the radio away. Can't wait to get it installed.

The actual reason for the channels 1-7 is set to low power is because in GMRS, the max transmit power is 5 watts on those channels. The channels 8-14 are not in mobile radios because they are only allowed in handheld radios, not mobiles. Channels 15-22 are allowed up to 50 watts max. Hope this helps someone understand.

Some mobile GMRS radios do have channels 8-14, but all you can do is monitor those channels. You can’t talk back. Also from what I’ve read, it’s not that 8-14 is for handhelds only, but rather that the power output is limited to just a 1/2 watt, and also no external antenna is allowed. Some handheld radios have the option to remove the antenna (if it is connected with a BNC connector) and then you could connect to a larger antenna, which could potentially raise your ERP power. Those radios, once connected to an external antenna, also could not be used on channels 8-14, handheld or not.

@@yakketyyak954 The real reason can be easily found within the FCC rules for GMRS. Specifically, the rule in Part 95, Subpart E which limits the frequencies commonly assigned to channels 8-14 to hand-held radios only. Here is the applicable section (from § 95.1763 GMRS channels):
      (d) 467 MHz interstitial channels. Only hand-held portable units may transmit on these 7 channels. The channel center frequencies are: 467.5675, 467.5875, 467.6125, 467.6375, 467.6625, 467.6875, and 467.7125 MHz.
Those channel center frequencies are the seven frequencies assigned to GMRS channels 8-14.
In other words, only handheld GMRS radios can transmit on channels 8-14 because, well, you can only transmit on channels 8-14 with a handheld GMRS radio.
Yep, because the FCC said so. That's all it is. And there you go.

@@donalderickson-si8ww 8-14 aren't part of GMRS repeater channels. They are different frequencies.

Thank you for such a clear explanation of this radio’s features. The only thing I didn’t hear mentioned is that it receives and transmits in narrow band, which I’ve read can make your transmissions to other radios in wide band sound very low volume, and when they transmit back then the volume on your end is way too loud and the signal is clipped which adds distortion. What are your thoughts on this?

Can somebody point me in the right direction on how to use this thing correctly? Obviously I know I can turn it on and put it on the correct channel and talk to someone. But as far as privacy codes and repeaters I'm lost. I learn better by watching videos or someone actually here teaching. Thank you!

In the manual there is a list of tones, but the tones are in radio as tone 1, tone 2, tone 3 etc... that is where the manual helps. With the midland mtx115 you will need to keep the manual close or make cheat sheets
