We moved from Austin in 1948. I was 12 and my dad was a Forest Ranger. The Shell truck belonged to Mastretti and Son who also had the DC Power for the town. The Odd Fellows Hall was the Town Pump. I learned to dance at the Hotel Austin and my buddy's dad Bill Williams owned the Golden Saloon (burned) Frank Aldape owned the Silver Dollar Saloon. Reed (Georgia's dad) owned the cafe and soda fountain. Vigus owned the grocery store and the JP was Bert Acre. He and wife Millie were the Sax and Piano orchestra for the dances. Great place to grow up.

I thought the Owl Club was in Eureka... Guess there was one in both towns because I ate at the Owl Cafe next to the Owl Casino when I was there a month ago.
Great second video on Austin Sarah. Couple years ago on my way back from Arizona bike week , I decided to go to Tonopah get gas and then I headed towards Austin , there was a stop sign about 5 miles out of Tonopah and a mining town about halfway in between which did not have an open gas station 101 miles after the 1st. stop sign I came to the next stop sign and there was nothing there either. Well I could go right to Eureka 43 miles or left to Austin for 16 mi. It was midnight and I was almost out of gas so I took a left , all the sudden the sign said 35 miles an hour which usually I kind of ignore but I chose to pay attention and slow down and boy am I glad I did. The road got very twisty and started to descend , before me appeared this little town on the hill. However every motel was full of pick up trucks obviously miners of some kind, but at least they had open gas stations. The wind was blowing it was kind of cold so I filled up and headed to battle Mountain and nobody could’ve told me that you can go downhill for 61 miles anywhere in America but that’s what I did. Checked into a motel in battle Mountain. The next morning all the hills were covered in snow just above me so I guess it was a good thing I did not stop in Austin. But I’m definitely going back . When I was a kid, we (my parents and the whole family) broke down in Austin twice! One time we had to be towed all the way back to Fallon. I think it's 105 miles. And it was so hot. Over 100 degrees. Lol. But I love Nevada so much! I lived in Sparks for two years. It's my adopted home state.

I drove from Phx to Lake Tahoe for our family reunion. Best trip ever. Through the Mohave desert. Lone Pine, Bishop, Fredericksburg. I camped in an abandoned adobe and rock cabin near Mono lake. After Tahoe we went to the real nice old mining town(Virginia city? It's been a while). I'd move to a place like Austin. I see trees. If WH ever comes into a pile of money she'd probably spend it on fixing up that old bar. Probably a bad investment but I get it.
US 50 runs from Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD. A little over 3,000 miles and about a dozen states I think. It goes through IN and IL about 30 miles North of where I live. It was a big deal before the Interstate highway system.
Post WWII whole lots of surplus trucks were sold , particularly Duces . They were commonly seen repurposed for industrial , mining , construction , etc . A lot of them with specialized rigging ( well drilling , welding rigs, etc ) that didn't see constant highway miles were commonly seen up thru the 1970's .

did you know that they filmed a little bit of the TV show emergency out there well just half of an episode of the TV show emergency they went to that little medical center there and anyway the plot of the show was that Johnny and Roy were coming back from a fishing trip they happened upon a car wreck and take them to the local medical center the medical center doctor was inadequate so Johnny and Roy had to take care of the patient from there on the phone with Doctor bracket which would have been back at the hospital in rampart California
I lived just outside of Austin in 1965. It was a gas station, restaurant and motel. If I remember right, it was called the Frontier Cafe or Restaurant.
Custis Long it gets worse. In my youth trucks like that sprayed used oil on the gravel roads to keep the dust down. Few roads in the rural west were paved. Oiling the road was side income for the garage and was how they disposed of old motor oil. This all went on before there even was an EPA. Times change.
Austin is probably my favorite town in NV. My Grandparents lived in Winnemucca off the Grid on 40 acres for 40+ years and we always stopped in Austin on our way.

I just watched one of the old episodes of Death Valley Days and they had the true story of Emma Nevada - it was very good and lots of history - and when you said you were going to Austin Nevada I had to see the place - good video
Hey Miss Sarah, have you hit Jerome and Crown King Arizona? Great places with a great history. Crown King use to be a party town back in the day. That is when across the street from the Crown King bar was a bar called The Shaft. It burnt down twice and did not rebuild after the second time. In the first bar they had a skin on the wall and if you could guess what kind of skin it was you got a free beer. Not to many got it. With the state Australia is in today the skin was a Kangaroo skin. So sad. Love your videos and how you intermingle history with where you go. Awesome lady, take care.
No it's a sad town in some ways, but if are caught in a winter storm or big thunderstorm, you'll be glad for the motels. Long way between there and Eureka.
That thing you saw at that old house was an antique table saw... I paused the video to look at it man that thing is dangerous look at how small the base is that thing could easily fall over if not bolted to the floor
Ok. Im older than the saw. Your right. Its scary. It looks like an early 60’s Delta with the gold tone finish. It was a bench top saw of the day. Today they are called contractors saws. The pedestal base looks like the base from a 1940-50’s vintage coffee shop table support. Somebody put that together.
I remember watching that early video. It was rough, but I stuck with you to see you become the professional entertainer and educator that you are today. 😂
I must say I've been watching your videos for a little while now I lived in Vegas for a couple of years in downtown Las Vegas wasn't too impressed about that but I must admit I am in falling in love with Vegas Nevada should say all over again by watching it through your eyes thank you so much wonderhussy for bringing back the enchantment of Nevada keep up the good work and I enjoy watching you and all Hot Springs I did not know existed you're a delight to watch as you take us through all these little mining towns and all the little things around Nevada
I have lived in Las Vegas as an adult since 1968... it is the least interesting place in the State! everything out of Clark County has more history and things to see... tons of camping, hiking and old mining sites.
We are buying the building next to the library. And opening a bar. We are NOT ready to open yet, there are logistical issues for people to come out to do construction, everything is 3x as expensive than we budgeted for so it's been challenging. We would be glad to have you out again when we are ready. 😊
Stopped in for a beer on my Harley 35, 40 years ago as I remember it's the wife of the owner at that time. I might be wrong but the bartender was a dead ringer of the gal in the picture and she said it was her.
I being a telephone guy love to watch your video's in towns like these and look for the telephone cables up on the poles. Some of these small towns actually have fiber. (Randsberg)

I drove highway 50 from Lake Tahoe , and i remember Austin well, and it,s a desolate Highway all right. That was back in 1972, i also drove it again in the 90s I also remember indian ruins some where out there. Thanks for the memories, i'm planing on some desert road trips with my women soon.

I have the "I survived Highway 50" shirt AND official document sent to me from Carson City. The check points start in Baker, NV and end in Fallon, NV. Along with the Document they sent me a very cool lapel pin. It was in deed the loneliest road I have ever traveled. There were places where there wasn't any one else on the road. I recommend that trek to those that love driving.
@@princessunicorn669 There was only one place. I remember it was a restaurant/gift shop type place. It was next to a rest area. The places that will mark the booklet usually have a sign posted. Good luck.

A really good tour of Austin and the beautiful scenic views. I can understand why one would live there. I wish I was able to go there and visit but you, as usual have done a great job showing us around town. Since I cannot tolerate the heat; it is best to view from here. Nicely done! I haven't been through Austin for something like 10 years. We stayed in the same motel, guess it's gotten a lot better since we stayed there. We had some drinks in the bar right down the street, it might have been the Owl Bar. "Crazy Sue" was the bartender... I still remember her and her "Texas Fly Swatter". We were surprised to see Sue when we had breakfast at the Toiyabe Cafe the next morning and she was our waitress! That's one hard partying, hard working gal!
Wow, I would love to see a video about the pony express route through Nevada. I have been interested in driving it for two years. I had the opportunity to ask Larry what he knew about it and the Lincoln Highway but he said he had never been on either.

Wuz there in the early 70's. More lively back then. That Austin Garage held the generator which provided power to the town. Graveyard is at the bottom of the hill at the intersectioon of the road to Battle Mt before getting into town, dump was across the road.
That town's actually bigger than Atlanta, Missouri(8-). That's the town nearest to me. Another really great video...and Kudos to John for accompanying you and Larry. John's cool people.
I drove highway 50 in 1992 in my 18 wheeler, it truly is the loneliest highway in America. Almost ran over a drunk women who had a fight with her old man. It was 20 degrees and by law I had to give her a ride to where she would be safe. I took her to a town about 80 miles away, that's how far I had to take her where she wouldn't freeze to death. I barely ever saw another car.
Great tour of Austin. I accidentally froze the picture of the bar painting.... Lots of $ bills on the wall. Nice Lady too!!! Tell Larry those are Air not hydraulic hoses on that old Rock Drill.
The Odd Fellows and the Freemasons are two seperate organizations. But there are times and places, especially in small towns, they will share a building. You won't see anything there unless you can see the second floor. That's where the Lodge room is. The object at the cabin that you didn't know what it was is an old table saw. Good explore.
Have been through Austin several times over the years. Stayed at the Pony Cyn Motel once. It was cozy too. Didn’t survive Hwy 50 my first time. Threw a rod in my Toyota van 40 miles west of Ely and had to have it towed to Salt Lake City for repair.

In the Early 90's there was a grocery store. Worked on a ranch nearby and used to go there on occasion.

Wonderhussy, the old gas truck is a wwll GMC, CCKW deuce and a half. Someone removed the troop transport body and replaced it with a tank. Nice find.
I thought it was an old Dodge Power Wagon at 1st, but wasn't sure. Thanx for info.

@@princessunicorn669 There was only one place. I remember it was a restaurant/gift shop type place. It was next to a rest area. The places that will mark the booklet usually have a sign posted. Good luck.

If you ever decide to explore around in Arizona give us a heads up I and I am sure many other viewers from here in AZ can tell you where to find some pretty neat stuff here as well but man it looks like Nevada is a goldmine for such places.I need to start visiting your state!
A really good tour of Austin and the beautiful scenic views. I can understand why one would live there. I wish I was able to go there and visit but you, as usual have done a great job showing us around town. Since I cannot tolerate the heat; it is best to view from here. (MS makes it hard to travel ) I appreciate all the hot tubs, mountain treks, and views in the dessert that you show us and will have to make do with that. Thanks,from your Friday Facebook Friend-Jean

Nicely done! I haven't been through Austin for something like 10 years. We stayed in the same motel, guess it's gotten a lot better since we stayed there. We had some drinks in the bar right down the street, it might have been the Owl Bar. "Crazy Sue" was the bartender... I still remember her and her "Texas Fly Swatter". We were surprised to see Sue when we had breakfast at the Toiyabe Cafe the next morning and she was our waitress! That's one hard partying, hard working gal!
Her name wasn't Sue, it was Betty and yes she was hard working and loved by everyone!
Wow, I would love to see a video about the pony express route through Nevada. I have been interested in driving it for two years. I had the opportunity to ask Larry what he knew about it and the Lincoln Highway but he said he had never been on either.
I would love that town. I'd buy that second house next to the red one.
Driving out of Austin, that long lonely stretch of US 50...to Ely...just couldn't wait for a great cuppa Starbucks ....again, TY for the travel "looks" !

By the way, just realized you went there a year ago. We were in Austin 2 weeks ago and everything looks exactly the same. I am not even kidding.
Wuz there in the early 70's. More lively back then. That Austin Garage held the generator which provided power to the town. Graveyard is at the bottom of the hill at the intersectioon of the road to Battle Mt before getting into town, dump was across the road.

That town's actually bigger than Atlanta, Missouri(8-). That's the town nearest to me. Another really great video...and Kudos to John for accompanying you and Larry. John's cool people.
Those weights are allow the cable to be spooled back on the drum, without anything on the hook, nice and tight. Instead of loose and all jammed up.

I drove highway 50 in 1992 in my 18 wheeler, it truly is the loneliest highway in America. Almost ran over a drunk women who had a fight with her old man. It was 20 degrees and by law I had to give her a ride to where she would be safe. I took her to a town about 80 miles away, that's how far I had to take her where she wouldn't freeze to death. I barely ever saw another car.
Great tour of Austin. I accidentally froze the picture of the bar painting.... Lots of $ bills on the wall. Nice Lady too!!! Tell Larry those are Air not hydraulic hoses on that old Rock Drill.
The Odd Fellows and the Freemasons are two seperate organizations. But there are times and places, especially in small towns, they will share a building. You won't see anything there unless you can see the second floor. That's where the Lodge room is. The object at the cabin that you didn't know what it was is an old table saw. Good explore.
Have been through Austin several times over the years. Stayed at the Pony Cyn Motel once. It was cozy too. Didn’t survive Hwy 50 my first time. Threw a rod in my Toyota van 40 miles west of Ely and had to have it towed to Salt Lake City for repair.
I like the old roads in Austin . The vista outside of the Castle is gorgeous .
