I was at this event. Absolutely sick stuff going on, even in practice. This was the biggest vert ramp ever built for X-Games. Afterwards it was disassembled and moved to become the new ramp at the Encinitas YMCA where all the vert pros practice. Since then ramps have gotten smaller and runs shorter. Today's pros are still good, but I don't think any of them approach the level of mastery that Tony, Bob, Bucky, and Andy had in their prime.
I would argue that it's not that the commentary has gotten worse, it's just mellowed out because this kind of stuff isn't as exciting. Back in these days, it was not that uncommon to have some unbelievable tricks and things people had never seen before. But nowadays, we're really desensitized to what used to be incredible achievements. Skaters have gotten harder, faster, and higher, and it is so rare to see that unprecedented stuff. So I would say it's just mellower now that we've had like 30 years of skateboarding competitions. Trails were blazed and this stuff is still so cool, but we're long past the days of the 900 being the world's most amazing skateboarding achievement.
@@paulw858 I think they got away from the longer technical runs they used to do in these competitions for shorter, more amplified stuff and that has ruined vert as a whole. Now these guys only go for 30 seconds and get in their 900 or one huge trick and that's it. Back in the day guys like Bob Burnquist would lay out a masterpiece of a run. Maybe they should get back to making these guys stomp out a collection of hard tricks in one run to win.
Wow. I didn't know they did doubles runs in the competitive scene. There's something really special about this. Hearing the reaction of the announcers just shows how new the idea of some of these doubles combos was. What a cool time to be in skateboarding.
No. It was was recorded with a camera, not with the camera of a cellphone. If your question is not sarcasm, the cellphones in 2003 didn't have camera, just calls, SMS, and maybe color screen. They didn't already have internet on it. These competitions were watched at TV, because things like TH-cam weren't already birth. And of course, the internet was like 10000x slower, which means impossible streaming with quality, the hard disk of PCs had less space than the SD card of my 2021 smartphone, etc.
Since Obama likes to get rid of things that he thinks takes control of him... he would get rid of skateboarding and throw Bob and Bucky on prison for life. Just because he would be so jealous. Than he will say " if you like your skateboarder you can keep your skateboarder. Period." Lmao!
Why can't we have cool tv like this anymore?
Because millennials only like clickbait and fake shit.
@@Harry_Ballz What are you talking about? A lot of millennials grew up watching these guys. Quit generalizing dude
@@julsie3195 Stop bullshitting please. Millennials don't even know what a tv is.
@@Harry_Ballz I don't think you know what a millennial is. They're born from like 81-96.
because they stopped using potatoes as camcorders....

PLG did.
You just proved his argument kkk
Wow!! Had no idea this was the Encinitas vert ramp :D
Gotta admit Shaun White did come along and absolutely wipe the floor those few years though. In terms of mastery he's all too easy to forget :D
I literally won a custom fender guitar at this event that has bon on it. Play it every day.
Classic video. Name a more iconic duo.
When X games was gnarly
Bob & Bucky is such an overkill
Dude's went completely crazy. It's like Undertaker and Kane in the WWE. Absolute domination!
They had way better commentary dudes in the booth back then. They really went wild and really amped up the excitement.
