Falling out of love with Kuta. It's not Kuta, it's me.

  • Today I walk around the lanes of Kuta and the beach of Legian where I meet a brush seller who doesn't really want to talk much but as I've taken his time I buy one of his products.
On Legian beach i run into fellow TH-camr Uncle Chan Bali and we chat about where Chandra comes from in Sumatra, his beach bar, and how often he goes out to make a video.
I find the number of sun beds and umbrellas along the beach surprising and give my opinion on how everything is becoming the same in many places in Bali lacking character or individuality.
Andrew is a recent arrival to Bali after leaving the United Kingdom for Australia then deciding to stop into Indonesia where he fell in love with island living. I ask Andrew what it is about Bali he finds so alluring and what his plans are.
A random man who comes from Flores starts singing on the street and has quite a good voice and is a lot of fun.
We meet subscriber Craig who also tells us of his time on holidays and where he's staying. Craig likes to wing it on his holidays to Bali and little is planned which resonates with me a lot.
Walking down a quiet local lane I come across a huge hotel which spoils the picturesque little gang I'm on and I find its presence quite imposing.
I also give my feelings about how I now view Kuta a little differently as i've gotten older and find it a bit shallow or hollow this time around. This prompts me to decide to move on in a few days.
A great day walking around Kuta.

Many of the bogans who used to infest Kuta have migrated north to Seminyak and Canggu. Hence, I believe Kuta has improved in recent years. I've actually stayed up at Legian twice, however both times I repeatedly rode my scooter south to be in Kuta. I love the areas in and around Jalan Bakung Sari and Kartika Plaza. I've just turned 59, so would probably fit in well in Sanur. However I just can't let go of Kuta - and probably never will.

People still lovely, (though very different from Indonesians), so I miss them. Kuta/Legian the same. Go north, south or east, young man!

The first time I went around 80 there was only the one Main Street and Kuta and Legian were seperate . I can remember riding down to the beach through paddocks off Jalan Legian right through to the beach and there was nothing at Canggu. I remember the bemos were an open Ute with bench seats either side. It was magic back then and the surf was relatively uncrowded . Now it seems every square inch of the place is taken up with development. It reminds me of a line from an Eagles track “you call someplace paradise kiss it goodbye”. I usually stay over at Sanur now where it’s a bit quieter . The people are largely still the same. I’ll be coming back in July and staying at Sanur, Candidasa and Ubud. I hope to see you over there Wayne.

Becoming jaded with a place is natural, you don't notice the pickpockets, littering, concrete walls blocking sunlight, when you just arrived.
From many trips to Kuta it seems many foreigners who've found their happy island life in Indonesia, use Kuta as a waypoint- DPS being usually as cheap to get to as Jakarta with 1/10 the traffic & 1/100 the pollution, ferrys & connecting flights to thousands of places.

Wayne, do you know that when you check the daily exchange rate from AUD to Rp, there is always a huge difference. The advertised exchange rate in this video is 9750Rp for 1 $AUD when the current daily exchange rate today is 10127Rp. And we are further told that there is no Commission. When it comes to the weekend, irrespective of the daily exchange rate changes, the Rp exchange rate is held from Friday 3.0pm until the following Monday at 11.30am. I used to write about , "What tourism was destroying ". Spent alot of time on Lombok, but eventually lost the love. Don't get me wrong, we also grew older and needed to visit other SEAsian countries. One of the things you could do is food cart , cafe and restaurant and drinking bar reviews. I think that’s what a lot of people want to learn so they can navigate to where they arrive. There’s also a Ton of places to review so you have plenty of content to find. Maybe do it with a Map so people can orientate themselves with the location of the places you talk about. At the moment it’s all just a lot of names. Regardless of where you go, you can build up a map for viewers of places and experiences.

First arrived in Kuta in 93 having traveled overland through Java. I was on my way to Australia for the first time and it was shocking. the number of loutish shirtless bogans .. every bar showing aussie rules etc. Hated it. But I ended up being a regular visitor. and getting into it. Particularly so in that period after the bombs when the crowd got more diverse. Had a lot of fun there and met a lot of people - Indonesians and foreigners, some real characters - though not always nice ones it has to be said. It sucked in some low life/ people with dubious intentions for sure as well as regular folk from other islands looking to scrape a living and of course people just looking to chill or have a good time. One time I was in a club and they played that Eurythmics tune containing the line 'everybody's looking for something' and I looked around at the tourists, staff, working girls, myself and it felt very apt. People used to say that Kuta wasn't Bali, but of course that wasn't true. it was Kuta.

Also forces the locals to adopt their lifestyles to suit westerners, to the detriment of their own culture. They are the most beautiful people who really don't deserve this.
