So Trevor was “the mandarin” in iron man three and was in charge of the ten rings. Well come to find out Shang-chis father is the real mandarin and Trevor was an actor 😂
I love when some things goes right over your head.makes me roll my eyes so far back into my head that i found some lost braincells lol😬.love your reactions.never a dull moment🤗
When Simu Liu started acting one of his jobs was to play Spider-man at kids birthday parties but he was never allowed to take off the mask because Spider-man isn't Asian. Now he's the first Chinese superhero in the MCU
It doesnt need to be all about the fact hes the first asian or about even the first female hero or villian it just needs to be good and written and treated like another white lead movie no need to mention oh hes asian he knows hes asian race and gender doesnt need to be the main focus of a movie why do you think she hulk wasnt as good but had promise, its becaus they made it anti male instead of being about the comics
I think this movie never gets the appreciation it deserves! The story, family dynamics, character development, CGI, fight scenes & not to forget representation ...everything was just so good. It really is one of my marvel favourites!
It's a great movie for sure, Simu Liu and Awkwafina were amazing as well. I only have a few issues with it. One is the whole CGI end fight in the village, the fight choreography throughout the rest of the movie is amazing and its a shame that was cast aside for a big magic CGI fight, it doesn't help that the creature designs were overly stylized trying to replicate creatures from Chinese mythology which ruined a lot of the immersion of the conclusion. The second is Awkwafina's character, I think she's great in this movie and I like how she wasn't just a bit part, she's not even the "useless beside emotional support, fish out of water, best friend character" we are introduced to the fact very early in the film through their jobs as Valets that she is an amazing driver and we see that multiple times throughout the rest of the movie. The problem I have is that in the last act we go to this magical village hidden from the world where the inhabitants have been training their whole lives in weapons craft, Awkwafina's character shows up and within a very short time span and becomes this super amazing archer that even saves the day with her 1 in a million arrow shot. I don't expect realism in Marvel movies and I always go in with a healthy suspension of disbelief but I just really don't enjoy how that was handled. We know from the start that her character is a little lost and doesn't know what to do in life, nor has any passion beyond just vibing, I think it would have been great if she realized what she wants to do while visiting the village and instead of having her be as good a shot as Hawkeye after a few days of training maybe have her land a shot on someone or something attacking her mentor or someone else who has been practicing their whole lives that then does the world saving shot. Sorry for the wall of text, I really liked this movie a lot and with a couple of changes I just thought it could go up a level.😀
Tony Leung is one of the finest actors on the planet. Most Westerners aren't familiar with him as his movies are made and marketed in China. We were all so excited to see him branch out into a Hollywood role and he gave us one of the best, most interesting and complete performances from a Marvel "villain."
I know he has that reputation but honestly, I found his performance in this film to be really subpar compared to the main cast and I wouldn't call the main cast high tier in this film. I honestly wonder if it's just cultural differences in terms of outward expression of emotion or if emotional inflection in the voices are just really different culturally speaking. If that's the case then it's a me problem but there's a lot of western people whom are in the same boat
One thing I'm surprised you didn't point out is that Ben Kingsley's character Trevor Slattery was also the public face of the bad guys from Iron Man 3, The Ten Rings clan and the Mandarin in Ironman were not the true ones, but they are in Shang-Chi. There was a short which took place after Iron Man 3 where a guard said to Trevor, "the real Mandarin will see you now" or something along those lines, which eventually completeled that small arc we never knew needed closing, and it was brilliant
I was very suprised that he didnt notice it, or there wasnt many comments about it! But i suppose its hard to remember a movie you reacted to months and months ago
Hard to remember? I haven't seen iron man 3 since it came out and I recognize his ass in this video and I'm not even watching the movie. Cause phase 4 sucks ass.
"Trevor" is played by Ben Kingsley, one of the most acclaimed character actors ever. Dude has 4 Oscars under his belt The mere fact he is in this is hilarious.
In the comics they're actual rings that go on your fingers and each one has a different power. But I think for the mcu they thought that would be too similar to the infinity stones/gauntlet, so they changed the 10 rings to what you see in the movie
@@disconnexionsdotcom ngl i watched it high and jus assumed they were like rings but for the dragon creatures or something. that’s why they were so big and powerful
@@disconnexionsdotcom in the comics they are parts of an alien ship engine that is salvaged by the man who becomes the Mandarin. He steals some Stark tech, and so Iron Man looks for him, too, and fears the technology getting into the wrong hands. Literally, it does, though the powers the rings provide are enough power all by themselves. The MCU version might still have powers like the comics (heat, force fields, freeze ray, disintegration, etc.), and Wenwu hasn't discovered them. They also look a great deal like the gadgets Phaestos creates in Eternals, so there might be a connection there.
Something that I feel goes unnoticed is when Shang Chi's father gets his soul taken, it takes much longer than it does for other people especially considering it's the giant monster and not one of the small ones. This is because his father is thousands of years old, meaning his soul is "bigger" in a sense and takes longer to take. Just a small detail, but details like this make the movies much more enjoyable to me.
@@laramiaizz 100% a theory as I don't think it's ever been addressed by anyone at Marvel, however I think it's very likely. It's only slow mo for a short portion, and it's taking his soul for ~6 seconds prior to the slow mo scene, so it likely took upwards of 10 seconds for his soul to be taken. Every other person's soul we see taken only takes a couple of seconds, if that, and it's all by the smaller creatures and not the big one. The only other time it takes this long (or longer in this case) is when it's taking the dragons soul. All of this makes me think it's canon.
@@rebel8215 maybe because they are not main characters? shang chi's dad is the second lead character of course his death scene would be better highlighted than others..
@@laramiaizz It's not a matter of being better highlighted. They could've easily slow mo'd the same scene and made the soul eating slower but they purposefully made it longer. Even his "soul" looks larger than the other peoples.
This is one of the best Marvel movies overall imo. Crazy good. You mentioned it felt like a "phase one" movie and that's sort of the idea of phase four. It's a phase one for the next saga of Marvel. No big overarching story but moreso establishing the players for what's to come.
Came here to say this. Phase Three was the end of the Infinity Saga. Phase Four is the beginning of the Mulitverse Saga, which will end in Phase 6. This is a beginning, that's why it feels like that.
Shang chi best represents the evolution of marvel. It's different enough to feel fresh, but at the same time still feels like a classic marvel movie. Here the humor worked and was not overdone, and it had a great villain, which are the most common complaints of the mcu.
@@nickmilo932Madvocate is a good reviewer but super analytical criticisms regarding movies like this sometimes are overdone. If it’s enjoyable and features good qualities, many criticisms like “typical MCU formula” and such can be overlooked.
@deepcutreactions I agree and disagree. Yes, phase 4 feels disconnected compared to phase 1 in terms of the character relationships and how it’ll lead up to phase 6/Kang vs Phase 3/Thanos. But that’s because of two reasons. The first being we have the hindsight of seeing how all of phases 1-3 connect. If you’re telling me by the end of phase 1 you knew anywhere near how phase 3 would end up playing out, I’m calling you a liar. The second is that yes phase 1 movies felt more connected because they all led up to the first Avengers movie. But that’s not necessary because there isn’t a necessity to make them team up all again by the end of phase 4. Why? Because there’s so many more characters that only a Thanos level threat would require them all to meet up again. However, we have seen connections. Shang Chi has met Wong Captain Marvel and Hulk, Hulk has connected us with She Hulk, She Hulk has connected us with Daredevil, Wong and Strange have reconnected us with Wanda and connected with American Chavez, Ms Marvel has connected with Captain Marvel, etc etc. So while we don’t have that huge group yet, we have had connections made despite there being so many new characters.
Tony Leung is a f***in' ICON. There is no role (main or smaller), genre or style which doesn't fit him. He acts amazingly in bone-crashing action stuff (Bullet in the Head, Hard Boiled), dazzling martial art epics (Chinese Ghost Story III, Ashes Of Time, Hero, The Grandmaster) or deeply emotional melodramas (his films with Wong Kar-Wai, especially In the Mood for Love) but he had a lot of comedies too 😊 Oh, and don't forget Infernal Affairs (the original version of The Departed). He's brilliant.
I totally agree about it feeling like a phase 1 film. They just did a really good job at giving us an origin story. Easily one of the top phase 4 films
Not at all, you don't get random characters popping in DURING phase 1 films. Wong, Abomination, Trevor Slattery..... we don't need the endless crossovers FFS.
The most important scene in my mind is when his aunt opens hoods palm. It’s so powerful because he’s been using force and power to fight, instead of opening up, fighting with the flow of things like his mother instead of like his father.
I don't know for sure, but I definitely feel like many of the forest fight scenes in "Shang Chi" were directly inspired from the fight choreography in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend. It costars Michelle Yeoh, who happened to play Shang's auntie in this film.
Not in the same vein, but at least 3 of the cast of this movie are in Everything Everywhere All at Once. To say that movie is amazing is an understatement.
I didn’t know what to expect with Shang-Chi when it came out, but I was absolutely blown away. This movie was added to my list of movies that is so easy to want to watch over & over again. It’s a beautiful movie and one of the best things to come out of Phase 4. Some of the best fight scenes, the relationships displayed between Wenwu & Shang-Chi, Shang-Chi/Xialing and Shang-Chi/Katy. I am really looking forward to seeing Shang-Chi’s story continue!
Exactly meeee like I didn't know who tf Shang-Chi is or what this movie was gonna be about. I had a BLAST in the movie theater. I've rewatched this movie a whole damn lot and I still can't grow tired of it.
They managed to take something that I was completely lame and I let down in Iron Man 3 and plop it into this movie and made a great. I love his inclusion in the film.
This movie is definitely one of the top Marvel movies but it's soooo underrated!! I lovee how Tony Leung portrayed the complexity of his character as Wenwu. He's not a good man or a good father, but he loved his wife dearly and was seriously lost that he forgot how much he loved his children as well when his wife was still alive.
The *best* choreography has what Bruce Lee called “emotional content” in other words every strike or grab or block is with intent and full of feeling. The actions tell as much of a story as the speech. This concept couldn’t be more beautiful exemplified than it is here right from the start. Wen Wu feels unstoppable. Then, he is stopped in his tracks and suddenly feels vulnerable.
He's unstoppable because he has the Ten Rings which look and feel like CGI at every point. They don't feel like the metal rings on arms used in martials arts films like Kung Fu Hustle or others, and impacts from them are contrived because of it - they are a gimmick, and nothing more.
Trevor was the villain in Iron Man 3. Many fans felt duped because he was supposed to be magical and was just an actor and people had false expectations. Shang Chi's dad even mentions this at dinner. In the comics, the 10 rings were literal rings. Each one had a different power. The producers felt that was a little too similar to the infinity stones we just saw so they changed them to the bracelets. Though, by definition they are still rings. A donut is a ring too. This film took a lot of inspiration from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and other similar movies. Theres lots of footage on how they made those movies and similar techniques were used to film this movie as well.
I like how bus streamer guy was originally the Spider-man “do a flip” guy and now he co-stars with Adam Scott and Christopher Walken on one the best shows on tv. Hell of an upgrade.
Shang Chi was definitely my favorite movie of phase 4. I like martial arts movies so this was right up my alley! It paid a lot of homage to Jackie Chan movies.
This is the best tribute to martial arts and classic kung-fu movies I've ever seen. Choreographies done by stunts of Jet-Li and Jackie Chan movies, the effects, the mystique, the morale of the story ("be careful what you wish for"), the relatable characters... AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC. I didn't expect this movie to be THIS good, one of my favorites ever already.
22:40 Yeah, in the comics, it was supposed to be actually ten rings on your fingers. However, the director didn't want to confuse the audience since we just seen the infinity stones. However, Marvel had the idea to make the Ten Rings into Hung Gar like bracelets, which is incredible! 🙏🏽💪
You should check out the soundtrack for this film. Record label 88 Rising brought a number of their musicians together for this album, and half of the songs made their way into the final film. And the story about Ta Lo was also published in a childrens' book that's tied to this movie. It's called "Who Guards My Sleep?" Some behind the scenes trivia: Andy Le who portrays Death Dealer (the guy in the white mask) was also Simu Liu's personal trainer. The two of them started practicing the fight choreography months ahead of filming. Also, when Simu's parents would call him, it wasn't to check up on him but rather they wanted to know if he got to work with Tony Leung that day.
This movie right here is why I'm bummed the upcoming Percy Jackson show isn't animated. Because I would LOVE to have had Simu Liu as the VOICE of Heroes of Olympus Character Frank Zhang, Ming Na Wen as his mother Emily, and Michelle Yeoh as his grandmother.
He's one of my favorite villains in the MCU so far. The actor was fantastic - he's one of those that can do amazing things with very little expression. Fairly relatable to an extent too - one where he really thought he was doing the right thing. The whole movie is super underrated.
I saw this movie in 3D in theaters when it first came out and it was so fkn rad. The part where water dragon attacked the dweller in darkness right as it was about to go for Shang Chi looked sick. They filmed this movie with 3D in mind you can tell by a lot of the camera angles. This was actually a dope movie to see in 3D.
This is the problem though. What sticks in peoples heads more often than not is the big CGI battle at the end in every MCU film. Well, almost all - Winter Soldier did a better job of it, and Guardians 1 did pretty well too.
Watching this movie in 3D was one of the best decisions I've ever made, especially because I didn't know what to expect and had low expectations. It was such a blast fr
Super underappreciated film. It had great representation, good story, was hilarious and had martial arts choreographed and performed by martial artists making them some of the best fight scenes in the MCU. I really hope he comes back for something soon!
Katy's an original character for the movie (she was never in the comics), but I get the feeling that bit where she shot an arrow through the Dweller in Darkness' throat wasn't just luck or skill, but that she's going to have some hidden power of her own, likely a superpower version of Hawkeye, where she can not only hit things from tremendous distances, but if you notice the arrow as it hits is sheathed in a golden light, so it was probably enhanced by her power to do immense damage to whatever it hits too.
I really love how the guy from iron man 3 comes back the Trevor slattery and I love how the abomination comes back from incredible hulk in 2008 and I really like how abomination has a fight with wong.
i love this movie, and i can't praise tony leung (the dad's) performance enough. it's ao subtle, almost entirely in the eyes. every time he starts leaning towards focusing on his children, the monster calls out to him again to manipulate him. but maybe my favorite moment with him is right as it starts busting out of the gate; as it starts breaking, shang-chi starts backing up but his dad starts walking TOWARDS shang-chi with his arm a little outstretched as if to pull him back, his instincts to get his kid away from danger kicking back in. it only last a second but i adore it
This was really good, and they are already working on Shang Chi 2. Marvel also does this subtle thing with magic where it's color-coded - you'll notice that Dr. Strange and Shang Chi's magic were both Orange, and Orange is "good guy magic", where blue tends to be cosmic (like Captain Marvel, the tesseract, etc), and purple is "evil magic" (like Agatha in WandaVision). Shang Chi is also rumored to be a part of the Avengers in the upcoming Avengers 5 and 6 which will be cool to see him team up with others. Cheers.
Strange uses all the colors. CRIMSON -- reality -- Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. Time spells are green (the Time Stone). Orange spells evoke the soul and therefore, the Soul Stone. Purple is power. Agatha craves that, right? The great sorcerors use all the colors, Strange and Doom (he's coming). And Doom wears green -- he, not Kang, is the true Master of Time Travel. And God-Emperor Doom of Battleworld is white, transcending and combining all colors -- like the logo of AVENGERS SECRET WARS.
The Rings being bracelets in this movie was a unique design choice on the design team's part, I remember something or someone vaguely mentioning that they wanted to have it incorporate better with martial arts, and if they were rings it'd kinda just look similar to Thanos when he stands and clenches his fist to activate the Stones.
The thing with punching trees or other things to make the hands stronger is legit. With each punch you create micro fractures that when they heal the bone becomes more dense and stronger. Don't try to do it if you don't know what you are doing
I had really low expectations for this movie at release and it turned out to be one of my favorites in the whole MCU. I was afraid it would just be some cheesy karate movie and instead it was a near masterpiece. Also loved the decision to keep Shawn and Katy as just friends (at least for now, but I hope they keep it that way) - it was really refreshing instead of the same old romance trope we've seen a million times
15:00 It's to make your knuckles callouses, so you can dish out a lot of hard punches before you can feel it while also hardening the point of impact. Basically, it's the type of thing one does to themselves when they want to be able to fracture bones with punches alone.
The first three PHASE IV projects give us the whole direction and thrust of THE MULTIVERSE SAGA (Phases IV, V, VI and possibly VII). 1) WANDAVISION: introduces us to the Scarlet Witch, the most powerful being in the Multiverse. She is key to solving the Three Problems of the Multiverse Saga (1. The Dynasty of Kangs, 2. The Incursions, and 3. the even more powerful God-Emperor of Battleworld, Doctor Doom). 2) FALCON & THE WINTER SOLDIER: establishes Sam Wilson as the new Captain America, the hero who will unite New Avengers, Old Avengers, and Young Avengers to face the Kangs, and more importantly, will lead survivors from Earth-616 to confront the greatest of all supervillains, Doctor Doom. Aided by the Fantastic Four, Wilson will lead surviving heroes from Earth-616 and other lost timelines into Battleworld. 3) LOKI: introduces us to 31st-century Nathaniel Richards and his variants, the Kangs. His introduction as “He Who Remains” alludes to the coming of both the Fantastic Four (because all Kangs descend from Reed Richards) and the greatest threat and supervillain of all, Doctor Doom (for all Kangs use Doom’s Space-Time Platform). SHANG-CHI and its PHASE VI sequel, "THE WRECKAGE OF TIME," are very important entries in the MULTIVERSE SAGA. The Ten Rings are actually quantum technology used by a Kang-variant (see ANTMAN & THE WASP QUANTUMANIA), one who conquered the 41st-century Kree and Shi-ar Star Empires. The Rings are powerful: they can be used to create designer timelines editing alternate pasts and futures. These time-definat Rings (a wink at who they really belong to, Kang the Conqueror), prevent AGING to anyone who wields them (like they did for Xu Wenwu as seen in SHANG-CHI), and can be integrated into a Multiversal-Engine "Lifeboat", granting escape to anyone fleeing their dying universe undergoing an Incursion event (see DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS). The Rings and the Quantum Bands (see MS MARVEL, THE MARVELS) will play an important role when universes begin dying in Phase VI on the road to AVENGERS SECRET WARS. Remember these three points, what the Ten Rings really are, and be patient. Doom is coming.
2:08 i think there's a difference between western and eastern concept of a deity. to westerners god is an omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient being, but in eastern mythologies, gods are often times regular creatures who lived by a certain credo, honed their skills to the utmost, then achieved enlightment and ascended to become a higher being. that's why there's a very specific god/goddess in stories. god of war, god of love, god of harvest, god of wisdom, god of destruction, etc
This film came as such a delightful surprise. I really, really liked it. If you'd like to see one of its inspirations, watch, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," with a younger Michelle Yeoh ("Auntie Nan").
Also "Hero" (has Tony Leung in it, too) and "House of the Flying Daggers". They all have a similar feel to it, great movies. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is the greatest of these three, however.
Sheng-Chi was phase 4's Guardians of the Galaxy. Not sure what to expect going in but absolutely blows away expectations. My favorite installment of Phase 4
Agreed, Ant-Man was like that too. Marvel does a great job with their B and C level characters, where as some other studio can't even get their A level characters right...
There is a good short film by Marvel that takes place between Iron Man 3 and this, where Trevor (The Mandarin) gets out of prison. The main actor used to be in a sitcom here in Canada.
I'm so happy you reacted to and appreciated this film the way it deserves. Disney really did it wrong by not releasing it in cinemas and only on Disney+. It's an incredible film and, as you said, has the feel of a phase 1 MCU film.
Been waiting for this one! So glad its finally here! One of the greatest origin stories of the MCU! Instant classic! Instant hit when it came out! I didnt have any expectations going into this film....and it somehow still blew me away! So glad you loved it! Also Alex you might have not caught this but this film referenced 2 other classic films (in my opinion) early on around after the bus fight scene.... The two films: The Warriors and Kung Fu Hustle....both 2 amazing films that you definitely should check out! Maybe I'm being biased but I'm sure you'll love both films! Hope you can check them out one day! :D
You're doing Daredevil? That's awesome! Did you really say "let go of your son's rod"??? I was waiting for this reaction. It was very much worth it. Can't wait for the next one. Keep'em coming, Mr. Goochman!
Holy moly! So excited for all the S-M movies and the Daredevil! Definitely one of the best shows I have ever seen! Cant wait for you to see the second season! Pump those episodes out ASAP my dude! Love your humor and optimism!
Yo Alex. The punching trees thing is indeed a thing. It's called iron palm technique. Or otherwise known as iron fist. Strengthening the hand to extremes so you can punch things without it breaking your bones etc. But it has to be done correctly otherwise you can permanently damage your hands. It also requires a lot of pain in general to get there as the scarring on your hands harden over time in layers
Alex, to answer your question about hitting hard things, yes, it makes your bones stronger. The training creates microfractures in your bones and they heal stronger. I went through similar training when I was studying Muay Thai.
hitting things like wood repeatedly is a common thing called “CONDITIONING” a lot of martial arts fighters do it with the parts they hit with. (boxers knuckles, muay thai shins) it’s so that the bones don’t break and the inside don’t bruise.
Phase 4 really is most like phase 1 (maybe 2) in that it is introducing new characters with origin films and some others are moving things forward, hinting at the next overarching plot. What it is interesting is I think there is a lot of different overarching plots developing on top of each other, which is probably good.
Alex loved your reaction!!! This movie is definitely one of the best movies in the mcu. Just a beautiful story and the fight scenes are some of the best!
I didnt realise that Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere was in this movie as Shang and Katie's friends and i was wishing she was in Shang Chi 2 in some role but i don't know if it will happen...i loved her performance in Everything Everywhere and Mrs Maisel
If you like those fight scenes you should definitely check out "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," which took martial arts cinema to a whole other level. Also "Hero," with Jet Li has some memorizing fight scenes with a really good story line. Be aware both originals have sub-titles, but there are dubbed versions available.
"didn't know what to expect coming into this movie" is probably why it was so enjoyable, I guess all this phase 4 hate bashing in a major sense is because we're expecting now every movie to be an infinity war or endgame :c
Fun Fact: Other than the bus scene, the references to Jackie Chan continues with the fight choreography being done by pupils from his stunt team, the elder archer being played by one of Jackie's old circus troupe members, and Death Dealer being played by Andy Le, a member of a TH-cam stunt team who were inspired by Jackie's work.
Loki, Shang-Chi and Wakanda Forever are my top 3 phase four projects by a long mile... I can't believe you have got this point so fast dude, but I'm all here for it Also... Tony Leung is a fuckin' legend
When people say “none of the movies in Phase 4 are good” and I think they’re insane, this is the first movie that comes to mind. Spidey and WF are legit too, but something about this movie hits different for me.
@@CrowTRobot for sure. and I've loved all the shows (Moon Knight/Ms Marvel especially as well as Loki and Wandavision, but I also know nothing about comics, which is nice cause I don't get upset over changes from comics)
@@CrowTRobot I know, it´s kind of infuriating that people are throwing this movie under the bus, when it´s so good, like Alex said, this feels like a phase 1 or phase 2 movie because it just has that quality
@@aspenture1087 That's actually important. You're not a jaded comic book reader that criticizes every little thing that's not just like the comics, those people are annoying as hell.
yes the method of hitting trees and such does work, how it works is it creates mircofractures that heal over and whenever bone heals it grows back thicker making stronger bones 👍🏼
Always felt bad for their father Wenwu (AKA The Mandarin). He was deceived by the Dweller and didn't realize until it was too late. Great performance from Tony Leung, who is one of my favorite actors. This film has teh best fight scenes of the MCU films for sure, but they are just Wuxia fights. If you haven't seen Hero, Crouching Tiger, or pretty much any of the big Hong Kong martial arts film with Donnie Yen or Jet Lee, you will probably dig them. This film is inspired by those. There are a lot of videos on the making of teh fight scenes for this movie. In the comics the rings were actual rings on the hands of a character called the Mandarin, a big bad for Iron Man. They reimagined the origin way back in the first Ironman film as a terrorist/criminal org, the dudes that captured Tony were affiliated with "The 10 Rings". Then later, in Ironman 3, they brought in Trevor (actor is Ben Kingsley who is like a legit legend). Trevor is hired to be a fake Mandarin by Killian(dude who was had all dollar store super soldier that exploded if they missed their meds). After IM3 there is a cool short you can watch on D+ called "All hail the King" which is is like an long after credit scene about Trevor. But after that we see don't see him until now; Shang's dad is the REAL Mandarin and he wasn't cool with some rando making use of his name so he imprisoned him and made him like a court jester.
Admiteddly I seen the trailers for this and thought it looked kind of silly because there was to much fantasy. Which let's admit it, I've done that for a few Marvel movies. Only to end up seeing them and love them. Shang Chi was such a perfect movie.
This movie had to accomplish almost the impossible by being an origin story in phase 4 of marvel and it killed it in every single way. It was so so good. The fighting was so reminiscent (without being overboard and on the more unbelievable side) of the fighting in Asian cinema as a whole. The sort of flying/floating magical style of fighting mixed so well with the grounded martial arts and quick hand to hand combat. It truly was a breath of fresh air that no one knew the MCU needed. A few quick things! The ten rings organization (or rather a radical branch of this organization) are who kidnapped Tony Stark and led to him building/becoming Iron Man. Also Trevor (the British actor man) was who Killian hired in Iron Man 3 to portray the Mandarin as a scare tactic and what not. The real Mandarin was Shang’s father and that’s why Trevor was in their prison/dungeon area. I know the film explains this sort of but I don’t remember how clear it was that that’s who this character is. Fun fact! The guy who live-streamed the bus fight is the same guy from Spider-Man far from home (I think?) who was standing at a food truck and goes “do a flip!” Also fun fact! The creature that Wong is fighting in the cage match is the Abomination from the Hulk. He just looks more comic accurate in this iteration. Why are they called rings even though they are bracelets? So in the comics they are rings. I assume making them into bracelets worked better with the fighting style of the movie. But also they definitely could be rings for some massive alien race and in comparison have to be worn as bracelets on humans. Complete random note. Disney sold an alligator Loki plushie that was absolutely adorable and I would very much like for them to make a morris plus he’s because I would love to have one. He is precious. And finally!! I’m so glad your going to watch all the Spider-Man movies before watch no way home! While not necessary for following the plot of the movie, I think having watched them will greatly increase your viewing pleasure! Also the same goes for daredevil. I have not seen the original series from Netflix (it’s on the list I just have yet to commit the time to it) but I found I was able to grasp what I needed to without this previous knowledge. That’s kind of vague but when are these comments not vague when trying to prepare you for upcoming projects without giving anything away!
The guy who plays Death Dealer (“white mask” guy), Andy Le, is part of a TH-cam channel called Martial Club. He’s also in Everything Everywhere All At Once. The Martial Club is a group of amazing self-taught martial artist. There is some really fun stuff on their channel including behind the scenes. If you haven’t seen it, Everything Everywhere all at Once is one of the most amazing films of all times, and I bet will be taught in film school for years to come.
punching hard objects caused microfractures that heal and calcify and make your bones real hard. So yeah, it works, but it'll cause a lot of issues down the road. Also, you want a badass action movie with Tony Leung; Hard Boiled. The title is misleading, but my god what an action film.
During the caged fight sequence, he also didn't recognize Abomination, or that some of the fighters were Black Widows, or an extremis injected fighter.
If you liked the "dance fighting" that's the kind of fight you see in Chinese films, the most notable one being Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, as for the Bus and Bamboo Scaffolding fight scenes, those were inspired by Jackie Chan films :)
25:34 it's a sheng biao, aka a rope dart. Very dangerous in the hands of a skilled user, you can find videos of them being used in performances and out of nowhere the dart will fly out from an angle you never expected and it goes fast and far.
If you end up watching "Everything Everywhere All at Once" You will notice the mom and the daughter in that movie were characters in this movie...It is an awesome movie also BTW
15:00 it’s called Wolffs theory in which strong healthy bones applied under pressure will create microfractures, and will repair and calcify to create tougher and denser bones. It’s the same logic as muscle growth. Micro tears in the tissue will be repaired and create stronger fibres.
very much agreed. At most a small part of you wants to love them and wants them to be different, but ultimately you feel nothing for them or potentially just anger/hatred/resentment towards them. (My Mum was very emotionally abusive and was also physically abusive and sexually abusive, at a minimum grooming but my memory is fucked up and I think she did let a guy r*pe me but I don't know if that was a memory or my imagination)
So the character/creature that Wong was fighting in the arena that they went to in China is abomination from the Incredible Hulk. I figured you wouldn’t have been able to recognize him because they updated what he looked like to fit in the more comic accurate version, compared to what he looked like in Incredible Hulk. But I do share the same sentiment as you I thought it was a really good film unlike the friend of mine who I do movie reviews with he absolutely dislike this film.
Totally realized Trevor was from Iron Man 3 during the edit 😂😂😂😂😂
So Trevor was “the mandarin” in iron man three and was in charge of the ten rings. Well come to find out Shang-chis father is the real mandarin and Trevor was an actor 😂
I love when some things goes right over your head.makes me roll my eyes so far back into my head that i found some lost braincells lol😬.love your reactions.never a dull moment🤗
You don't need to watch Daredevil before spiderman no way home. Because Daredevil doesn't have any major roll.
@@TheDarkKnight854 if you want one of the best marvel has to offer, you don’t skip daredevil
i doubt that.
When Simu Liu started acting one of his jobs was to play Spider-man at kids birthday parties but he was never allowed to take off the mask because Spider-man isn't Asian. Now he's the first Chinese superhero in the MCU
So I guess wong is a villain huh
@@BOOGiNS lol I think they meant "Main" Chinese Superhero not supporting cast
Friend of mine got to meet him and a few other MCU stars for his work, said he was one of the nicest and most down to earth people he ever met.
Which is ironic because Into The Spiderverse basically made it canon that anyone can be Spider-Man
It doesnt need to be all about the fact hes the first asian or about even the first female hero or villian it just needs to be good and written and treated like another white lead movie no need to mention oh hes asian he knows hes asian race and gender doesnt need to be the main focus of a movie why do you think she hulk wasnt as good but had promise, its becaus they made it anti male instead of being about the comics
Hands down the best Phase 4 movie besides Spooderman.
You might think so but not true its one of the phase 4 highlights
This movie is actually one of the most loved gems of Phase 4, so it def gets the attention it deserves.
He is the 2nd Chinese Asian hero......first is quake chloe bennet
Tony Leung is one of the finest actors on the planet. Most Westerners aren't familiar with him as his movies are made and marketed in China. We were all so excited to see him branch out into a Hollywood role and he gave us one of the best, most interesting and complete performances from a Marvel "villain."
It's literally insane just how skilled this man is. Like the acting in his eyes alone doesn't even feel real. Idk how you do that
A superb actor. I’ve seen him in many things.
Amazing casting in this movie.
It’s hard to remember, I’m not too surprised. The Iron Man movies and Shang Chi are pretty far removed from each other
@@flamethegame1 yeah, i was like "he´s not gonna say anyting??" and even if he didnt remember the character... that´s Ben freaking Kingsley!!

"Trevor" is played by Ben Kingsley, one of the most acclaimed character actors ever.
Dude has 4 Oscars under his belt
The mere fact he is in this is hilarious.
In the comics they're actual rings that go on your fingers and each one has a different power. But I think for the mcu they thought that would be too similar to the infinity stones/gauntlet, so they changed the 10 rings to what you see in the movie
I wonder if these are rings, but for very large fingers. Maybe some alien creature that we haven't seen yet..
@@disconnexionsdotcom That's actually a really cool theory
@@paulkondon also in quantumania's trailer a structure similar to the ten rings was there.
You should ask, "Is that the mom?" Every five minutes during every Marvel movie from here on out.
The art: A+
The action: A+
The story: A+
The whole movie is just perfect and so beautiful I love it so much
Something that I feel goes unnoticed is when Shang Chi's father gets his soul taken, it takes much longer than it does for other people especially considering it's the giant monster and not one of the small ones. This is because his father is thousands of years old, meaning his soul is "bigger" in a sense and takes longer to take. Just a small detail, but details like this make the movies much more enjoyable to me.
is that your theory or is it canon? for me i think it's just a slow mo for emotional purposes..
@@rebel8215 because he is a main character..nobody else who got their soul sucked is as important as him.
Here the humor worked and was not overdone, and it had a great villain, which are the most common complaints of the mcu.
hard to say that after I watched madvocate's video about it
@@nickmilo932Madvocate is a good reviewer but super analytical criticisms regarding movies like this sometimes are overdone.
A ring is not just a piece of jewelry. It is also a shape.
I was going to make the same point.
The STARGATE is also a ring. As is the Ringworld (though not Marvel references)
When I saw he was casted I yelped in joy. He is a powerhouse of an actor.
Truth!
but the fact that Alex looked him up shows that Tony is Transversal. His performances are that DAMN good.
Alex needs to watch Hard Boiled. Best gun fights ever filmed and a huge inspiration for recent movies like John Wick
I totally agree about it feeling like a phase 1 film. They just did a really good job at giving us an origin story. Easily one of the top phase 4 films
Arguably the best. Maybe even right behind No Way Home or tied neck and neck with it. In my opinion.
Not at all, you don't get random characters popping in DURING phase 1 films.
Wong, Abomination, Trevor Slattery..... we don't need the endless crossovers FFS.
@@mnomadvfx kinda hard to not have them when this is already phase 4. Literally the multiverse era. Whats more crossover than that.
Well it's kind of phase 1 again so😂
The most important scene in my mind is when his aunt opens hoods palm.
And not just Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The director has said every Jackie Chan movie ever made, Jet-Li's Tai-Chi Master, and the Ip Man series.
Ewww don't compare this CGI fest to that masterpiece.
Even Yeoh's lesser part in CTHD was far better than this.
@@mnomadvfx It's comparable as far as the choreography goes, that's all she was saying. You can absolutely tell it was an influence to this.
Trevor Slattery is the same character that we saw in Iron Man 3 who role played Mandarin
They managed to take something that I was completely lame and I let down in Iron Man 3 and plop it into this movie and made a great. I love his inclusion in the film.
"Ring" is also another word for "circle," y'all. I don't know why so many people don't think beyond the jewelry. The Ten Circles.
Wenwu was very...human. If my wife was killed, and I had the power to destroy those responsible, I can't say I wouldn't do so.
@@mnomadvfx Kung Fu Hustle is a campy, shlocky comedy and it sucks by comparison 😂
@@mnomadvfx I do Kung fu and honestly Kung fu hustle kinda sucks, Shang-Chi is way better as a martial arts film.
Definitely one of the MCU’s best & most unique origin stories, loved it all
Trevor was the villain in Iron Man 3.
It's called "Who Guards My Sleep?"
Some behind the scenes trivia: Andy Le who portrays Death Dealer (the guy in the white mask) was also Simu Liu's personal trainer. The two of them started practicing the fight choreography months ahead of filming.
Also, when Simu's parents would call him, it wasn't to check up on him but rather they wanted to know if he got to work with Tony Leung that day.
100% this. Soundtrack slaps, 88 Rising rarely misses.
Tony Leung Chiu Wai is one of my favorite actors. He is insanely talented in everything he does.
Alex out here trying to guess all the twists and creating a whole different movie in his head lol great reaction.
Super underappreciated film. It had great representation, good story, was hilarious and had martial arts choreographed and performed by martial artists making them some of the best fight scenes in the MCU. I really hope he comes back for something soon!
@Alex Hefner that big green monster is Abomination the villian from the Hulk film
I really love how the guy from iron man 3 comes back the Trevor slattery and I love how the abomination comes back from incredible hulk in 2008 and I really like how abomination has a fight with wong.
i love this movie, and i can't praise tony leung (the dad's) performance enough. it's ao subtle, almost entirely in the eyes. every time he starts leaning towards focusing on his children, the monster calls out to him again to manipulate him. but maybe my favorite moment with him is right as it starts busting out of the gate; as it starts breaking, shang-chi starts backing up but his dad starts walking TOWARDS shang-chi with his arm a little outstretched as if to pull him back, his instincts to get his kid away from danger kicking back in. it only last a second but i adore it
As an asian guy, i can confirm that all the birds in this side of the world is on fire
You know what I like about your videos? You have a really high emotional iq, and it makes your reviews and reactions really relatable! You’re awesome!
In case you didn’t know, Trevor was the actor who played the fake Mandarin from Iron Man 3. And Morris is an actual creature in Chinese mythology.
13:58 Love the fight choreography between Shang Chi vs Death Dealer! 🙏🏽💪
@Mr_AlexhefnerTV sod of ya fucking scammer
You should really check out "HERO" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" if you're looking for more cool fight scenes like in this movie.
In the comics he did have rings. And each ring had its own power. Basically as an Infinity Gauntlet but weaker.
He was also pretty much Ironman's arch enemy in the comics. That is why some people where very frustrated with Ironman 3.

Wow, I always wondered why they did that. Great info!
Oh thanks, that totally makes sense!
hitting things like wood repeatedly is a common thing called “CONDITIONING” a lot of martial arts fighters do it with the parts they hit with.
Your setup looks a lot better here!! So bright and fresh, w more of ur personality, I dig it
Alex loved your reaction!!!
Always pumped for a Marvel movie reaction.. Heck yeah!!!! Shang Chi is one my favorite in the MCU.
Ta Lo village was actually a full scale set built and filmed in Sydney Australia 🫶🏻
The guy recording the fight on the bus (Klev) is the same guy in spiderman that told him to do a backflip
wenwu is a top 5 mcu villain and I stand by that
Yh…… he is like the Loki villain…… you can’t help but love the character 😂
6:51 Let the battle begin! 🙏🏽💪
"didn't know what to expect coming into this movie" is probably why it was so enjoyable, I guess all this phase 4 hate bashing in a major sense is because we're expecting now every movie to be an infinity war or endgame :c
pretty much. especially with phase four essentially being a phase one. I've loved phase four more than phase one.
I can't believe you have got this point so fast dude, but I'm all here for it
Also... Tony Leung is a fuckin' legend
When people say “none of the movies in Phase 4 are good” and I think they’re insane, this is the first movie that comes to mind. Spidey and WF are legit too, but something about this movie hits different for me.
@@CrowTRobotplus Loki & Wandavision. Black Panther 2 is one my favorite mcu films after seeing it twice now
@@CrowTRobot for sure. and I've loved all the shows (Moon Knight/Ms Marvel especially as well as Loki and Wandavision, but I also know nothing about comics, which is nice cause I don't get upset over changes from comics)
The way Marvel can keep things fresh and continues to show that "superhero" isn't a genre is so awesome.
Admiteddly I seen the trailers for this and thought it looked kind of silly because there was to much fantasy. Which let's admit it, I've done that for a few Marvel movies. Only to end up seeing them and love them. Shang Chi was such a perfect movie.
15:00 yes it is in fact a thing, we do this in muay thai where we basically get micro fractures on our shins and knuckles so they regrow stronger.
Fun fact! The guy who live-streamed the bus fight is the same guy from Spider-Man far from home (I think?) who was standing at a food truck and goes “do a flip!”
Also fun fact!
That bus guy is from Spider-man: Homecoming
@@touhidulanamruhan5991 ah thanks! I don’t know why I always forget which movie he’s in. I can see the scene just can’t place it 😂
The guy who plays Death Dealer (“white mask” guy), Andy Le, is part of a TH-cam channel called Martial Club.
Yup the using of the clothing during a fight is classic Jackie Chan.
Also Andy Le, who plays “Death Dealer” (white mask guy) is in it and was highly involved in the fight choreography.
Such an awesome film.
Doing two marvel movies a week?! Is this heaven?
ikr
No. It’s Iowa.
14:11 When Alex said this to Shang-chi "Wait, is that ur mom"! when he is talking about death dealer got me dying😂
I can't tell, does he recognize Trevor?
The circle that the dragon did under the lanterns was to start a yin yang that he then finished after with the middle part
@Mr_AlexhefnerTV I do not have Telegram sorry
How did you not realize that the crazy guy was the Mandarin from Iron Man 3? 🤣🤣🤣
imagine his reaction when he realize this hehe
He also did not recognized the Abomination, did he watched the Hulk with Edward Norton🤔
@@leandrog5038 yes he did
@@leandrog5038 it's a completely different looking design of the character. Ed Norton's hulk is not marvel canon
@@BOOGiNS uh yes it is lol
15:00 it’s called Wolffs theory in which strong healthy bones applied under pressure will create microfractures, and will repair and calcify to create tougher and denser bones. It’s the same logic as muscle growth. Micro tears in the tissue will be repaired and create stronger fibres.
Not necessarily. As someone who's had a father treat him like absolute crap his whole life eventually you become numb and feel nothing for the person.
very much agreed.
Did u realize the monster at the fight club was the villain in the hulk movie? Not the last time you’ll see him either
Rewatching this I didn't realize that their friend was the actress who played Joy in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Love it.
One of the best movies of all time and will be remembered for years to come!
Fuck yes, so excited for your Daredevil Reaction!!
