The fact that Grian told everyone the rules, and he seems to be the most knowledgeable in this would link to the watchers because if they created this perpetual time loop, Grian would be the one that knows the rules the best as he’s had to watch them for an eternity.
Another thing with Grian not belonging there and being a watcher could get connected to his absolute slaughtering of a bunch of his old team and with him having maybe a similar hunger as the watchers do :b
I would like to think evo smp and last/3rd life are connected by Lore. Grian a watcher was not supposed to compete but he did anyway and is doing something... also Grian announced season 3!!!!
well, that got dahark honestly I love the idea of Grian as a rogue Watcher trying to protect his friends from the other Watchers. But how does that jibe with this whole thing being Grian’s idea in the first place? (Or is that where the line between canon and behind-the-scenes is?) also love that from any other perspective this is just “Ren and Marten being weird”. Real iceberg meme scenario.
I haven't watched the video yet so forgive me if what I'm about to say clashes with anything stated as lore, but I would say Grian can both be the cause of this AND rogue. He could've gone rogue after starting the entire thing to protect them, or it could be a situation where watchers NEED something to participate in. Like, in order to save them, he had to pull them out of some other loop and place them under his protection? I don't know though. Like I said, I haven't actaully watched the video yet.
@@jdk2535 I like the idea (and someone else said this here too) that the Watchers need to oversee this sort of event, in the same way vampires need to bite people. But since becoming a Watcher didn't make Grian evil (feel free to fight me on this), he creates his own private loops and fills them with people who have consented to entertain him (we know they've consented, because Grian's made that a rule in other places), because they're also his friends and want to help out while getting their worst impulses out of their system.
@@WizardOfDocs I won't argue with Grian not being evil but I don't think the people in the loops consent to it. Martyn made it very clear that the people trapped within these loops are pulled in by the other Watchers. They're either being punished, or being tortured for fun, because the Watchers need food. I don't think that Grian needs to feed in the same way the other Watchers do though. We know several things about Watchers, but the most relevant here are that (1) They don't have physical forms and (2) They can only interact in loops through pumpkins. Grian outright contradicts both of these, by being in a loop with his physical body. So it's possible (and I would argue that) he's still human in some sense, and therefore doesn't need to feed the way the others do. That's why he wants to free everyone. They're not just food or entertainment, they're people and that means something to him.
@@jdk2535 Everyone in Last Life is there by invitation. It may not be informed consent, Watcher!Grian could have lied to them about the purpose of the event, but they did all agree to be involved.
@@WizardOfDocs as ccs yes they were invited but according to Martyn the characters themselves weren't invited, they were chosen. they can only consent if there's another choice, which there isn't. they're trapped
Summary! (with time stamps) Continuation in replies THIRD LIFE 02:09 - In the latter end of Martyn's season, he first comes into contact with "The Shadow", seemingly taking a liking to Martyn. 03:16 - Martyn wanted to betray Ren and declare "RED WINTER HAS ENDED, NOW RED SPRING HAS BEGUN" for a finale. That didn't happen. 04:41 - The arc words "Our Will Be Done" appear for the first time. 05:36 - The Shadow are dissatisfied. What they seek is a mystery for now. "Change is in order" refers to the boogeyman change. THE TEASER 06:33 - Martyn releases a Last Life teaser with the words: _Long have we waited_ _A hunger grows_ _Surpass them all_ _Take friends for foes_ _Live not for others_ _Invest in one_ _For if they fall_ _Ere will be done_ "Take friends for foes" blatantly refers to the Boogeyman. "Ere Will Be Done" should normally be "Our Will Be Done", which means something is up with the words. And indeed, if you look at the first letter of each line it spells "LAST LIFE". EPISODES 1 TO 8 07:51 - Episode 1. Something happens off-camera (which we'll get to in Episode 9). 08:23 - Episode 2. Martyn plans on linking up with Ren in some way or another since the very beginning. 10:11 - The Shadow plans out a secret clan and sends a message to Martyn. This "shadow clan" was supposed to have members scattered all around the different alliances (namely Martyn, Ren, Lizzie, Pearl, and Etho), so that by the end of the series they could finally reveal themselves to each of their alliances by word of Martyn. Unfortunately that didn't happen the way Martyn planned. 11:58 - The Shadow speaks once more: _Sacrifice those that landed_ _Lessons acknowledged_ _Can claim flags among ashes_ _Help another, never doubt_ _When in need, traverse each route_ The second half plays with the first letter of each word, which spells: "HAND WINTER", very clearly referencing the Red Winter. Deciphering the first half is more complicated. If you take the first letter of the first word, the second letter of the second, and so on, you get "SHADOW" and "CLANS". We reset after "Acknowledged" because the word "SHADOW" is already spelled out by then. 14:47 - Episode 4. Martyn is deciding on a theme for the Shadow Clan and decides (after a discussion with Ren at the end of the episode) to theme it around the moon. 15:27 - While the discussion happens at the very end, the words of The Shadow give us a hint at around the halfway point in the episode: _Tell a lie_ _Sow the seed_ _Undermine_ _Know and free_ _It must be done_ "It Must Be Done". Last time we had a deviation from the arc words "Our Will Be Done" we knew something was going on with the first letters, so let's try the same thing. Taking the first letter of each line gives us "TSUKI", which is Japanese for "moon". 16:50 - You'll recognize the Kanji for moon "月" as the symbol on the back of Martyn's cloak. 23:41 - Supposedly there would be a 月 symbol in the bunker's wall with lava flowing beneath it but that takes too much time, so that never happened. 17:41 - Martyn chose Ren because of Red Winter. He wanted Lizzie in because her username had "Shadow" in it, and he also wanted Pearl in for the same reason: her username had "moon" in it. He also considered bringing in Etho just because he's sneaky. Nevermind Etho putting a bounty on Martyn 3 episodes later, and Ren giving Pearl the codename "Shadow Clam" and not "Shadow Moon". 18:44 - Episode 5. Martyn plans on sealing the alliance by giving Ren a life, putting them all at 3 lives. Too bad Timmy ran off with one of them. To make the chase scene less boring CC!Martyn throws in some more "Shadow Speech": _FORGET THE RULES_ _THE OPPORTUNITY_ _RETRIEVE IT NOW_ _THE REST WILL AGREE_ _END THIS BETRAYAL_ _DO NOT LET HIM ESCAPE_ Since this is a chase scene, Martyn emulated the motion of the feet by alternating between the first letter of the first two words in each line. That means we're looking at the first letters of the words "FORGET", "OPPORTUNITY", "RETRIEVE", "REST", "END", and "NOT", which spell out "FOR REN", which is exactly what he plans to do with the life. 22:24 - Martyn meets with what was formerly the "Fairy Alliance", and lends Ren a life, officially rebranding into the "Shadow Alliance" just as he had planned 3 episodes prior. Big B was also brought into this just because he was there when the alliance was declared (also he had 3 lives just like the rest of them). 24:09 - The most nutty coincidence in Martyn's series. The Shadow speaks: _Why do you linger so_ _You wish to join the shadow?_ _Boo!_ _[A pumpkin face appears]_ _A demonstration is in order_ _Lights extinguish_ _Begin the slaughter_ _OUR WILL BE DONE_ "Begin the slaughter" refers to the carnage that followed in Episode 6. "Lights extinguish" refers to the Shadow Alliance's goal of engulfing the world in darkness. It gives the idea that darkness is good and light is bad. We'll get to the other lines later, including the pumpkin face. 26:45 - Episode 6. Since the carnage happened, Martyn decides to throw in a line from the sequence into his conversation with Grian: _This is quite the demonstration_ Martyn says that line in front of Grian, and Grian passes it off as an unusual euphemism (probably referring to the chaos that happened earlier in the session). From Martyn's POV, he said it so he can overlay The Shadow's words right on top. 28:03 - Episode 7. Martyn had just witnessed Timmy and Mumbo's deaths, fueling his anguish. After Martyn is chosen as boogey, The Shadow speaks again, pumpkin face included: _Your time has come_ _To sever ties_ _Four towers burn_ _The last one dies_ _Our Will Be Done_ "To sever ties" means Martyn has to disconnect from the South at this point. "Four towers burn" refers to the burning of the walls that happened in the previous episode. "The last one dies" expects Martyn to be the last southerner standing. There's also a specific reason why Martyn targeted Grian but we'll leave that for episode 9. 30:14 - Joel was there dinging Grian, and Martyn would have investigated had Grian not said he was on the opposite side. 30:36 The reason CC!Martyn opted for a crystal play is because he wanted Grian to go off with a bang, and he didn't like the appeal of using arrows or swords and axes. Since the first crystal didn't do enough damage (Thanks, easy mode) he was considering throwing another crystal and at the same risking his health. He ultimately decided against it, but by the time he made that decision it was too late: Joel had already sniped Grian, and the ender pearl finished it off. 32:11 - Episode 8. Martyn "hallucinates" Timmy and Mumbo doing their intro. In Mumbo's intro he mentions the word "infinity", which will come into play later in episode 9. 35:43 - Martyn is breaking down. His friends are gone. The South is gone. As he runs to Ren for help, The Shadow scolds him. The following conversation ensues: _THEY'RE ALL GONE_ _N-no!_ _IT'S YOUR FAULT_ _You said only HE had to die!_ _AND YOU FAILED_ _He left though, didn't he?_ _IT WAS NOT THE WAY_ _Oh yeah? And what if I don't like your way?_ _DO AS WE SAY_ _Why should I?_ _WE CAN BRING THEM BACK_ _I don't believe you_ _WE TELL NO LIES_ _Fine, fine!_ _HEED OUR CALL, OUR WILL BE DONE_ Martyn is completely exasperated and confused. He got Grian out of the south, who died anyway to Joel, so why is The Shadow pissed? Also, The Shadow promised to bring back Mumbo, Timmy, and Impulse. What's up with that? 38:56 - The Shadow has absolutely had it with Grian, but the audience has no idea why. That's why he wanted Grian to die so badly. As to why he wasn't satisfied when Joel got the kill instead of Martyn, the answer is in Episode 9. 40:14 - Martyn finds out that Scott is the boogey, and yet is abstaining. The Shadow is not happy with this. 41:45 - The Shadow speaks: _Taken for fools we are never_ _Make red the sea and work together_ _Provide the means, fear not the blast_ _For if he chooses, the test is passed_ Martyn obliges and throws an end crystal dead center. If Scott strikes it, he passes the test. If not, he's on terrible standing. 43:07 - Some of the letters in those subtitles glitch out into their respective Galactic Alphabet characters. You don't need to know how to translate Galactic because the characters already translate to exactly the same letter in English, but the highlighted letters spell "TARGET ICHI", with Ichi (一) meaning "one" in Japanese. Scott decided not to blow it up while everyone was huddled, which means Scott is on the top of The Shadow's hitlist. Scott can be compared to the light, and the word "Grian" is Irish for "sun". That gives some reasoning as to why the Shadow wants to snuff both of them out, but this reasoning is actually false when it comes to Grian, which we'll see later. 44:10 - Grian blows up Martyn. A further blow to The Shadow. Which leads us to the finale.
FINALE 45:19 - CC!Martyn did not expect a sword fight battle royale at the very end of the episode. Nevertheless he battles it out. Except he still prefers to use explosives. He fails both times. EPILOGUE 48:00 - This conversation happens. _[intense panting]_ _Oh my god, oh my god_ _Just give me... That was too much..._ _Just give me a second to take my breath_ _Deep breaths..._ _Oh my god, I feel so lightheaded..._ _Oh my god_ _It's all just dark_ _That means... does that mean... oh my god_ _Did we win?_ _OH THE IRONY_ _TO BE UNDONE BY THE ONE YOU WERE TASKED TO DESTROY_ _EVEN GIVEN THE TOOLS YOU COULDN'T DO IT_ _LEAVING ONLY THE HOUND STANDING WOULD HAVE SUFFICED_ _Sorry but, who are you exactly?_ _THE NERVE_ _YOU KNOW NOT OUR NAME BUT WE HAVE COMMUNED_ _Wait, you're YOU..._ _What about all the rhyming?_ _RHYMING?_ _NO. NOT FOR YOU_ _WE WILL SPEAK PLAINLY NOW SO YOUR FEEBLE BRAIN CAN COMPREHEND US_ _PLUS, THERE'S NOBODY AROUND TO HEAR NOW ANYWAY_ _Feeble!?_ _YES, QUITE_ _YOU MUST UNDERSTAND WYY IT IS YOU FAILED US TWICE_ _[the screen slowly fades to white]_ _YOU'RE MAKING YOUR WAY INTO THE LIGHT AS WE SPEAK_ _Wait a minute. You said "you and your allies will see the end"_ _You said I could bring them all_ _Impulse, Jimmy, Mumbo, Me_ _You said we'd all join you in the end_ _YOU MISUNDERSTAND_ _No no no no no_ _You told me that if I did everything you said, that there would be a place for us!_ _There was no stronghold, there was no portal, so you couldn't have meant that end..._ _AND SO?_ _Unless..._ _HE'S LEARNING_ _...you just meant the end of days, didn't you. The end._ _Done, deal. Yeah cheers buddy, tHaNks FoR lIviNg!_ _One last stand knowing full well that we'd either run out of food, or patience eventually, and then what?_ _We just kill each other?_ _Is that it??_ _AMUSING, IS IT NOT?_ _WE HAD A TASTE BEFORE_ _BACK IN THE WINTER_ _IT WASN'T ENOUGH!_ _THERE WAS SOMETHING MISSING_ _THE ADRENALINE OF WAR SOFTENS THE FEAR OF MEN_ _THEIR SOULS DON'T RING WITH THE COLOUR OF PANIC AND CONFUSION AS THEY TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHATS HAPPENING MOMENTS BEFORE THEIR DEMISE_ _IT'S DELICIOUS_ _OUR HUNGER GREW THOSE MONTHS_ _WE WAITED_ _AND THEN ALL IT TOOK WAS A SIMPLE_ _3_ _2_ _1_ _AND YOU ALL OBLIGED_ _BAR ONE_ _You mean Scott?_ _HIS WILL TO LIVE IS TOO STRONG_ _HIS FLAME BURNED TOO BRIGHT_ _NOW LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED_ _I'm starting to feel really sleepy..._ _Just tell me one thing before I go._ _Why were you so set on Grian?_ _HMPH, HIM_ _HE WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE THERE_ _HE WAS ONLY EVER MEANT TO WATCH_ _I don't understand._ _YOU WOULDN'T_ _YOU'RE MORE OF A LISTENER_ _YOU DON'T COMPREHEND_ _Please. Just explain it to me_ _NO, WE DON'T THINK WE WILL_ 48:40 - "It's all just dark" Martyn opens his eyes and sees pitch black. He must be in the darkness, so the thought he had won. 49:49 - "Leaving only the Hound standing would have sufficed" Scott was target number one. Anyone but him should win. 50:15 - "I'm sorry, but who are you exactly?" Martyn doesn't recognize the voice, even though it sounds the same to us the entire series. Why? The voice manifested in Martyn as more comfortable and familiar voices. We, the viewers, however, are hearing their true voices. 51:18 - Martyn hasn't caught on. The rhyming never happened, because even though Martyn heard this rhyming, The Shadow has not once rhymed. So the words changed in his head. That's why when The Shadow's kindred stand around Martyn mocking him in Episode 8, all he heard was the same old intro he, Timmy, and Mumbo did all the time. Also The Shadow takes on a pumpkin head as their physical form, just as seen in Episodes 5, 7, and 8. 52:46 - "You're making your way into the light as we speak" The screen slowly changes from black to white. At this point it becomes clear that Martyn had lost. 53:10 - "You and your allies will see the end" Title drop. Martyn is conflicted about the meaning of "the end". CC!Martyn then reveals that he was referencing an old unwritten parody of Payphone he wrote 9 years ago, with its theme being a misunderstanding between what "the end" really meant. It was never uploaded to Yogscast because Lewis thought it was "too sad". 55:36 - Cut to Episode 1. Off-camera, The Shadow promises Martyn that he'd be in the end with Mumbo, Timmy, and Impulse. Everyone EXCEPT GRIAN. The other three haven't heard though. 57:46 - "You just meant the end of days, didn't you" Martyn realizes what The Shadow really meant by the end: the end of the series. All of their series had to end at some point. The Shadow was never really on their side. 58:20 - "Back in the winter" The Shadow references his experience back in 3rd Life with the Red Winter. They are revealed to consume souls of players passed. 59:18 - "It wasn't enough" Even souls weren't appetizing enough for The Shadow. These souls didn't have fear and panic in them. The boogeyman fixed that, and now when a boogey kill occurred panic would ring in the victim's soul. That "taste of sweetness" from back in 3rd Life was betrayal. 1:01:24 - "It's delicious" Cut to the Twitter Trailer that Martyn released before LL started. _A hunger grows_ The Shadow hadn't been fed in MONTHS. Now they're getting a full-course meal. 1:02:37 "And you all obliged, bar one" That countdown is the same countdown that tells whether or not you're the boogey. And for some reason the players feel obliged to kill when the worst that could happen is being taken to red; in Episode 6 Timmy and Joel both went for boogey kills despite already being red. Only Scott realized what happens, and since he expects to already die to Joel and Grian, he doesn't bother trying to cure himself bar stealing kills from the duo (which he tried to do with Cleo while she was getting chased). Where Martyn made a mistake in his logic is that he assumed that if everyone was red and just accepted their randomized fate, they could all live in harmony. Clearly that wasn't the case, because while both Scott and Joel were red, they still despised each other. 1:04:10 - "His flame burned too bright" Another reference to the "Lights Extinguish" line from Episode 5. 1:04:29 - "I'm starting to feel really sleepy" Martyn begins to fall asleep as he enters the light. 1:11:59 - Martyn arrives in the light. EVO 1:05:13 - "He was only ever meant to watch" A late addition. CC!Martyn hadn't written stuff like this since Evo so it's nice to throw in a little reference. At this point we finally see The Shadow's true identity: and why we can hear their true voices. They are the omnipresent Watchers, testing the players for fun (like in Squid Game). Back in Evo, Grian was converted into a watcher, and when the rest of the crew came back they realized that the Watchers are not what they seemed like at the beginning. They realized they were being tested, and right away they planned their escape under the lead of the Listeners. Some have escaped but others have been stuck in an infinite loop (see Watcher!Mumbo's mention of infinity) of sinister tests (SMPs), with 3rd Life and Last Life being some of the latest of these. 1:08:22 Since the watchers were feeding on souls, people could remember what happened before, but could not remember how they felt. Grian wasn't satisfied. He hated the watchers' behavior and wanted out of this "species", he wanted to save his friends from being toyed with, and he had a taste for adrenaline. So against the rules of the Watchers, he joined the SMP. Which angered them. That's why they wanted Martyn specifically to kill Grian using explosives: it's vengeance, and it's the only way to kill him in his form. 1:10:46 - "You're more of a listener" Martyn tried to run away and now he's punished for it.
Q&A 1:13:45 - What happened to the love crystal? It was blown up by the Shadow Fort trap Grian set off. 1:14:43 - Is Martyn still falling? Yes, in between SMPs Martyn keeps falling through the void, waiting to be picked up or thrown into a different SMP by the Watchers. 1:15:50 - How did Martyn really feel? The lore intended that his actions be conflicting. His betrayal of the South was never a full betrayal because when has he ever killed anyone in the South aside from Grian for his boogey kill. 1:16:55 - There's a theory that players land back in their servers between sessions. Where would Martyn go? The void he lives in. 1:17:17 - Perhaps the canon is that different SMPs aside from these ones are their dreams while falling. That would work. 1:18:41 - Did Grian break the cycle and free everyone (including himself)? Probably not. Martyn's not too sure at the moment. 1:19:41 - Grian was haunting you at the end of the episode. Once everyone dies they become a watcher very temporarily, until the last person falls. From there, everything fades to black, and they're taken to their own realm (an infinite void in Martyn's case). 1:22:09 - Who built the Watchers' dungeons in Evo? In CC, mostly Grian (and a few other members too). When Martyn wrote the lore, he specifically left out Timmy in the credits, so he can be targeted by the Listeners as their confidant. 1:24:39 - If there's a 3rd season you should become a merciless killer. That won't work. 1:24:47 - This could be like Dead By Daylight, where only one of the characters still remembers the past after each iteration. That would be really great for lore. 1:25:03 - Any other plans for Season 3? The boogeyman was a great change but it kept alliances freakishly small. 3rd Life was too much of one side vs the other, and Last Life was more of a survival show. 1:25:48 - You said The Shadow was the moon, and there were two Watchers in Evo (before Grian). Is the other one the sun? No. 1:25:54 - Have you considered writing a book? Not really. He can write plot points and narratives but not a whole book. 1:27:02 - Was the pumpkin face a physical part of the Watchers? Yes, that's how they appear when they take physical form in front of the players. 1:27:39 - Could the Watchers refer to the viewers? Sure, if you think about it. The Watchers are described to be omnipresent yet focused on few. The viewers could watch any SMP they like but they prefer to focus on a select few. We hear the Watchers voice as it is because we ARE Watchers and that is their true voice. 1:28:39 - Why did The Shadow like Ren? He was willing. 1:29:22 - It's funny how Timmy works for the listeners yet died first in both 3rd Life and Last Life. The Watchers unleashed their wrath. 1:29:31 - Is Grian aware of his Watcher status in LL? No. He knows about it in Evo, but from a CC perspective, this isn't the same series. 1:30:01 - Why did Martyn gravitate toward Ren again? Loyalty. They retain their memories from the last season. The Watchers wanted him in with Ren, too. 1:31:11 - What was your favorite part of the series? His boogey kill on Tango, and the AHA bit at the beginning. 1:31:50 - There should be a limit to the amount of lives traded/received, and a way to regain lives by exploring. Grian wants the series to be as vanilla as possible. 1:33:29 - You can start by setting lives per alliance rather than per person. That would encourage running off with lives, but naturally you would want to work together as a team. 1:34:16 - Big fan of nontraditional storytelling. Big cheers mate. This is CC!Martyn's first ever story fully written by him. 1:35:35 - The problem is that Reds had to separate from Greens. That's intentional. Back in 3rd Life Grian was using Scar's redness as an excuse to wreak havoc on the server, and the server didn't want a repeat of that. 1:36:59 - If there's a season 3, you should carry over watching Mumbo's intro. Martyn even wants to go as far as logging on Grian's account, joining Hermitcraft, and watching Mumbo do his intro there. 1:37:50 - Why did you choose the South in the battle royale? Martyn was already there in the South, and it made sense that he would pick the place he lived in. 1:38:16 - The best way to end the loop is to go to the End. But the Watchers would never give us a seed with an end portal in it. 1:38:53 - If the players are being punished and played with in an infinite loop by the Watchers, what explains Mumbo, Lizzie, and Pearl joining? They got dragged in. Must have done something in a different reality. The Watchers (as a collective) are omnipresent so they can tell. Either that or they got pulled in by association. 1:40:01 - How would the Watchers look? Aside from the pumpkin form, their main form is rather unclear, except for one big eye. It's kinda like Biblical Angels, nobody can really pinpoint EXACTLY what they look like. 1:40:50 - Why did Martyn keep returning to the South? It's his home. 1:41:44 - I like your ideas this season. That's why Martyn wrapped up the Shadow lore and brought up the Watchers: it's to confirm they're stuck in a loop. 1:42:19 - A good way to break the loop might be to break the border. Been there done that. 1:42:32 - Perhaps the Watchers watch over ALL SMPs, not just Evo, 3rd Life, and Last Life. Given the lore that The Watchers are representations of us, this is partially true. But really, who here has the energy to watch EVERY SINGLE SMP EVER at the same time. It also makes them appear defeatable to the Players. 1:43:44 - By the looks of it, the Viewers are the Watchers. This explains the omnipresent nature of the Watchers. We can watch any SMP we want. 1:44:28 - Is the moon and the voice the same entity? And why did Martyn call the voice a "she"? The voice manifested itself as a female voice at the time, so Martyn used she/her on the voice. 1:45:56 - Why wasn't Grian included as an ally? The Watchers' word said so. 1:46:47 - Could the moon be Amelia? No. It's just an eye in the sky. Doesn't mean it can only see at night though. Also the moon is usually female in most mythologies so that works out too. The moon is less of a Watcher and more of a way to commune with the Watchers. 1:48:16 - When Ren declared the Red Winter and later the Shadow Alliance, the night was in full moon. Ren is a Wolf boy, too. But you cannot script a coincidence. 1:50:31 - Boogeyman was creative but it got in the way of narrative. Agreed. 1:51:15 - It was also a full moon when you met Etho and Ren on the wall, and it was also a full moon when you ran away from the Watchers impersonating Mumbo and Timmy. Why is it that all the important moments happen at full moon? 1:51:40 - When Scott was insta-killed at the end, was it because of the Watchers being salty? I guess. Grian was the victor of the last season, and is also technically a watcher, so I can see why he went for the /kill and robbed Scott of an epic suicide.
ooo And the reason the watcher's never talked in 3rd life is because by the time they could do anything about Grian being there, Grian was in dept to Scar, so they both found it a fitting punishment and slightly enjoyable to let Grian stay as he was now forced to follow another person. But when Grian was the last one standing they were infuriated so right off the bat in the next season they had a hate towards Grian.
I know that season 3 is still just a possibility, so these ramblings are just for fun, but i was thinking up alternatives for the boogeyman curse to pass the time at work and came up with concept for a bounty system. Like at the beginning of a round 1 or more random people have a bounty placed on them, and if they survive the full 3 hours they receive a life, but if someone kills them, that person gets the life instead. It gives the players a choice where the boogeyman curse didnt, you can betray your team and gain a life, or you can protect your ally and have a stronger team in the long run (or you could lose it all if you fail to defend your ally). Its just an interesting dynamic to think about. It would put a lot of tension on alliances in a completely different way than the boogeyman. Anyway, enough of that! I absolutely loved how your series turned out and the thought you put into it! Very excited to see what you make in the future, weather its another season of last life or something completely new
Gifting life might be a bad idea as it doesn't cause the net lives to necessarily decrease. Items like a totem of undying would probably be better. The bounty might be fine occasionally, but it has the downside that factions without a bounty effectively get a free pass and can go about their business that day, whereas the boogeyman kept all factions involved. I do like the idea of alternating challenges though, with each one changing how the factions and players have to react.
I'm not against the idea of people gaining lives here and there. What about there being more boogeymen than bounties? Should the people with bounties actually be told? I think you could have the number of bounties per session randomly chosen between, say, 0 and 3. There should always be *at least* as many Boogeys as Bounties. The Boogeys get told who the Bounties are, but the Bounties themselves aren't told. If they kill a non-Bounty, they still get cured. But don't get the extra life. Or you could go deeper, and no one is told who the Bounties are. Could even be the Boogeymen. And there's only a 50% chance the life is gained by a surviving Bounty or a Boogey. (But still gets removed from the pool).
I like assassin better every person gets a target and if they don't kill them by the time the target turns red they loose a life (or it's like the boogey man you get a target kill them by the end of the day)
Another Intresting season 3 concept I have read somewhere is, Imagine if chat was permanently turned off same as Tab and then you only had proximity chat. So no one would know when someone has died and the information is only passed through word of mouth. So a person could die and you only find out three episodes later.
The falling and dreaming of other SMPs is reminding me of something Pearl mentioned at the start of one of her Empires SMP episodes. She hadn't posted on Empires for a while, and she mentioned having been asleep for a long time. There were a handful of people in the comments joking that she had dreamed about Last Life and Hermitcraft. Makes me wonder if that fits in in all this, and how. Has Pearl been dreaming about dreams?
to be honest, ever since Evo ended and ever since people started using the watchers as a plot point in fanfictions or fan arts or AUs for Hermitcraft, I have always been theorizing on what their motivation could be. I like the idea you came up with very much, and I absolutely adore the idea of 3rd life/last life being an infinite loop, with each time a few new people get sucked into the mess. I do however am still pretty much very confused with what the watchers or the listeners do, why they do their things and their role in the world, since canonically the watchers was meant to represent the viewers I guess the watchers putting the last life players on a infinite could symbolized the viewers wanting more. it's sorta similar to Danganronpa V3's ending in a way, it shows a sadistic fanbase who wants to see the players suffer for entertainment and it's true to an extent, obviously, we're not sadistic enough like the fanbase Danganronpa V3 was depicting, or hell, like Squid game where the rich put the poor on a dead game for entertainment, but we do want _more_ . A season 3 has been highly requested and hinted. The watchers puts the players in these death games for entertainment, and for their roles in universe? it's probably in a sense similar to the irl viewers as most of the players are full time CCs, the irl viewers act as a way these CCs make a living, and I'd like to think that the watchers are similar to that. Honestly I've always headcanon for the Watchers and the Listeners to be sorta like a Mojang kinda character where they helped update the world and stuff (considering that's what they did on Evo), so that's just my bias theory. I don't really think this is supposed to put us the viewers in a bad light (same to Danganronpa V3's ending), more so it's the concept of a character massively breaking the 4th wall and finding a way to get out and do their own thing without the influenced of a Watcher or a Listener idk what I'm trying to achieve with this comment, just some thoughts I have ig, I like the idea of the Watchers and the Listeners being morally grey and the Watchers not being as bad as we first thought, or the Listeners not being as good as they seems
Well, watchers are usually depicted as godlike beings who watch over everyone. They are able to travel and drag(?) anyone to any version they want but they rarely interfere with players. They’re usually the ‘antagonist’ in stories and are considered heartless, or not caring what happens in servers with permadeath. Usually people see them as just beings that toy with people’s lives because they just don’t understand why friendship, relationships and lives are important as they are basically immortal. Obviously not all this info is canon but mostly just the way people depict them :) but some people consider them gods that are kind but are seen as bad by the players because of a mistake
Like player, or in this case human, not all watchers are downright bad. You may find the sympathetic one, or really just the sadistic one, it depends on who strike interest in you first to be honest And how did you balance the over-controlling watcher with yourself. You didn't fight enough then you will become their puppet, if found a Good one they will protect you, that's basically what we act as well The Watcher are actually being mentioned in the Bible lore. Or, at least I think that's the Bible, I don't know what the Book of Enoch stand between the line, but they used the concept of “Fallen angel” namely the Watcher. Like this, they are bound to watch over humanity. But desire took over them, and they had done unforgivable sin. “Our” plan of existence (real life) can be considered as Heaven or home for God, the Watcher that we see in EVO and Life Series are the Angel had been giving a “form” to exist in that plane of existence. (Hence them being the personification of us), Grian might be the fallen one. Watcher hate being disobey, first is Grian because of not doing the purpose he's supposed to do, I think they expect Grian to act like some sort of God toward his server (Like, he's the admin and have access to the world, so the watcher wanted him to observe the world as any other God would. Only interferring in the form of guidance to the next update.) There's also something interesting here, the watcher describing Scott like the sun, and Grian literally mean Sun in Irish. The Watcher despise these two, not only because they're the Polar opposite of these creature, but because they refused to play the rule that has been given. My man Scott just became the main character, it feels like Grian passing that title to Scott and now he become the mentor to the man. NOW I NEED THIS KIND OF FANFICTION IN MY LIFE, IF SOMEONE WHO'S ABLE TO WRITE FOUND THIS INTERESTING I HOPE YOU CAN MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT Edit: also, haven't watch the last life series completely, but since ZombieCleo congratulates G-Team then does that mean Scott was part of it? If so then it's also mean Grian won. Grian outsmart the Watcher. And that infuriated them to the core
1:06:32 I still like the idea of Grian being sent to a completely new reality as so called Hermitcraft 6 but waiting for the Hermitcraft 5ers to transport to their new reality
I thought the various teams gave watching different perspectives it's own thing tbh, and the boogieman is a fun idea. There was also the temporary alliances towards the end which were pretty neat, watching different factions come together
If there's a third season, a target mechanic could be cool. It's like the boogeyman, but you have to kill a specific person. The punishment for failing could be the same.
I would like to think evo smp and last/3rd life are connected by Lore. Grian a watcher was not supposed to compete but he did anyway and is doing something... also Grian announced season 3!!!!
Watching this after have watching double life is crazy because the watchers REALLY ramped it up this time, they changed it so that not only are you gonna be confused as you die, but your partner who was unwillingly attached to you also has to suffer. THATS INSANEEEEEE
I think lore of grian in hermitcraft base of the rift makes this even better. Also obviosly lore will be hard in season 3 but would be cool to see smajor and grian kinda team up per say as they are both hated by the watchers.
Thank you for showing us behind the curtain a bit. Never heard of you before 3rd life. But i love what you do. Do more with Ren. You bounce off each other so well . Much love x
The watchers and Listeners have some similar canon to the ancients in Stargate Sg1. The ancients were once a race of technologically advanced humans who, once they died, ascended to a higher plain of existence. They have God like powers but have decided not to interfere with others (because they've screwed up by helping before) Of course some of them go against that and help how they can "within the rules". Which is similar to Grian being a watcher but still participating. And why the others are pissed at him for interfering. There is also a group of ancients called Ori who pretend to be gods to get humans to worship them because they feed off of the worship. Very similar to the watchers as well. If you haven't watched the Stargate franchise I would highly recommend it.
I like to imagine the moon as some sort of collective or council of Watchers. Also, I liked the conflict with the enchanter being tossed around. I feel like some sort of trophy or item more intentionally implemented and agreed upon that might produce some sort of prize could aid in the similar stirring of conflict with a little less mayhem, but idk. Maybe even a capsule that could store lives could be wild enough to be interesting? That's under any sort of assumption that there would be a third season, which I don't want to get my hopes too far up.
If there’s not a third season then I’ll cry every Tuesday. One of my favorite things to watch EVER. That’s including movies, tv shows, etc. I loved third/last life. Imagine in about 4-5 years we gonna come back to these and CRRRYYY😭
Ikr, or if you think about it 3rd Life turns into a series like HC and like 5+ years from now it's on like season 8 and still going strong (probably not but still) and we witnessed the beginning since season 1
I would like to think evo smp and last/3rd life are connected by Lore. Grian a watcher was not supposed to compete but he did anyway and is doing something... also Grian announced season 3!!!!
I think for season 3 it would be a good idea to get Grian in on your lorebuilding, if Last Life is a bit of a loop made by the Watchers and Grian is a Watcher. Would be nice to see more in-character stuff from him beyond just "moon big".
This was fantastic Martyn, I loved your series and think that the writing was excellent. I caught some of the hints dropped throughout the series, but I was stunned with how deep some of it went
I First heard of you in Third Life, but the RP between you and Ren was gold. It's Inspiring the way you cram lore into your content this way, it's very much to my taste. Thought I am biased, because I am a bit of a lorehound. Bit like Ren.
I've been so confused as to what or who exactly the watchers are, and only discovered it through Watcher!Grian AU fanart and was really confused. I found this today not expecting any of what was in the video, and honestly I haven't followed you much at all in the past. However after having the lore explained to me I'm just in awe, it's so well done for what it is and I find it incredible! I think I'm going to go watch the Evolution SMP to try to understand some of that lore more, and I almost wonder how or if other SMPs or series are indirectly or somewhat directly connected to some sort of larger lore. I don't know why but after this my mind is dwelling the semi-lore or Yogscast's series and how they call back to previous modded series. But that's enough rambling from me for now, if anyone wants to talk about this in the comments I would LOVE that. As for you Martyn, you have gained a new and very loyal subscriber!
I did have one idea; Watchers manifest in the physical world via carved pumpkins- what if that is why endermen ignore players who wear pumpkins? Perhaps as mobs and being part of the challenges set up by the Watchers, and being more sapient than most other mobs, they have some sort of respect for the pumpkins and try not to harm them?
I had the same thought. So I’ve been going through Grian’s playlist. I figured that’d give me Watcher plot since he’s kind of their focus. Now I’m thinking I need to watch Martyn’s pov instead?
The fundamental randomness and chaos that is the nature of such a death game seems like it's difficult to fully carry out narrative ideas. But it's still insane how much you manage to pull off!
I had an idea for a role in last life that they could implement in the next season if they decide to make season 3. There would be one person at the start of the series labeled as "The Mystic". The Mystic is chosen before the lives are rolled. The Mystic will automatically start with 2 lives. Each session they have one free /givelife command. To keep it fair, the server will randomly choose 3 players that the Mystic can choose to give a life to. Their identity is revealed when they turn red. While their name is red, they do not receive a /givelife command. However, if they turn yellow or green, the next session they receive another /givelife command. Upon killing a player by PvP, the Mystic will roll to see if they receive a life for the kill or not (maybe a 25% chance so that it isn't too op). I just made this idea for fun while watching the series and I thought it would be a good way to make the series last longer. Thanks for an amazing season, it was so much fun. Edit: Maybe to make it fit with the lore the Mystic could instead protect a boogeyman from the effects of the curse. Basically, the Mystic would know the boogeyman/boogeymen of the session but is not allowed to tell anyone. There will be a command that allows them to place their "blessing" on one of the boogeymen.
I'm surprised the bit from the end of season one was improv. I left a comment about how much it impacted me on the original video and I still stand by that. Guess its just a testament to how much words can effect someone, for good or ill. Both seasons have been really great from your perspective. Will happily watch more if there's another season. :) ps half the battle w storytelling is having a coherent narrative that people can engage with, the grammar and finesse can come after.
if there is a third series, a cool idea might be for the boogeyman mechanic, giving the boogeyman a specific target. everyone (except scott) who was a boogeyman got a kill, and scott didn’t get one by choice (he said he wasn’t gonna bother aiming for a kill). so for example, if martyn were a boogeyman, his target might be etho, and he has to get a kill on etho to be cured. because this would make it harder, maybe just take them down by one life if they don’t manage a kill. similarly, implementing a buddy system (which was suggested by someone in the chat) to give everyone starting allies would be a good idea too, as it would help create more secure alliances (as the server selects the targets, it could be made so it can’t select teammates), and also prevent there from being 4+ teams, as it was a bit complicated. if they were playing with more lives and more people, you could also have the boogeyman curse pass between players. you might have to remove players name of who killed who in chat (so for example, instead of saying “etho was slain by inthelittlewood”, it could say “??? was killed by inthelittlewood”), as this would hide who is now the boogeyman, and players would have to deduce who it is by who it can’t be (so for example, in this scenario, martyn theoretically could be a boogeyman, and it he could’ve killed the boogeyman through self-defence. however, if they know martyn wasn’t the boogeyman, players would have to be very careful who they trust, and use process of elimination to work out who it was. for example, if impulse and scar were to get her at the time, they’d know it couldn’t be either of them) this wouldn’t work with such small amounts of lives, as it would end the series very quickly if that were the case, you’d also have to keep the number of boogeymen per session to one, as it would be passed around you’d have minimum 2 per session (in theory). it would lead to a lot of chaos and death, which i think it pretty much the motto of 3rd/last life :D
I personally believe that the watchers are growing in size and power so they chose to take friends of those trapped to feed them as more conflic breaks out.
@@heatherfall_3996 please watch game theory about hermitcraft season 8 and come back if u still dont understand what happen.... And WHY Grian make Last Life exist if dug enough u will know it....
I mean, they named their finales for the first season in a similar fashion, but the viewers were already guaranteed a second season at the time. Granted, I think a S3 still has a possibility of happening if they can make some things work in their favour (especially in Grian's case since he's the host), but I also think there's a possibilty of no S3 aswell. We'll just have to wait and see.
It's so cool to hear all the work that went into the Last Life lore. FathomsFinch's comment gave me an idea where if you killed someone, you gained the life you took from them. Maybe every hour or episode or something a random life gets taken away so there would still be stakes and over time people would get more desperate and make bigger risks? That way the series would last longer and maybe you could put more lore into it. I don't know anything about the production of this series so I'm not sure if we're even getting a season three but I figured I'd throw my ideas into the mix. Thoughts?
Imagine just wanting to set up and play a light story-based Minecraft series with your gaming buddies and your friend turns your character into a malevolent demigod
Something I kinda came up with and thought was cool Background info- the watchers don't like Grian and Scott, Grian and Scott where the only ones who's soulmates they had previously teamed up with In the seires they won, Grian and Scar in 3rd life and Scott and Pearl in Last life, As punishment for the things they did that the watchers didn't like, in double life the paired up Grian and Scott with previous alliances that had worked really well for them and twisted their relationships to something they would hate. Grian had the secret soulmates thing with BigB and scar was distracted a lot. And Pearl went crazy after session one
Coming to this from limited life (SPOILERS FOR LIMITED LIFE) but the vanquish them all and ally with none little lore profecy bit came true as Martyn won the season by betraying his ally and killing impulse
I just remembered, the whole: there is something out there that feeds on the chosen and it is an infinite loop reminds me of the storyline for Dissidia Final Fantasy.
ok so here me out. For a version of last life when maybe like 8 - 12 seasons pass, each winner should be put into a way more chaotic version of last life. they have 25 or so lives total in the server and they are split among the players BUT after the end of each session they MUST swap their lives with another player so say Grian has 3 lives and Scott has 5, at the end of the session they swap so grian has 5 and Scott has 3 next session BUT if you don't swap with anyone you go lower in lives or straight to a red. It would make alliances and betrayals SO much worse because say Scott and Grian team up and Grian has 2 lives and Scott has 4 they swap because they are allies but at the end of the session Scott thinks Grian will swap his 4 lives back but he runs off to someone with 4 lives like BigB so Grian and BigB swap and Scott doesn't have his alliance or lives back so he swaps with someone else who has 2 lives like Mumbo. Maybe some other twists like the boogey system and the other random twists added through the seasons get swapped out per day and only the people being affected know what it is.
See I like the "the viewers are the watchers" because from the perspective of the characters we are kinda cruel. You as the viewer want bad things to happen, conflicts to arrive BECAUSE that makes the drama and the story more interesting. When people turned red and the boogies came out and the bloodshed reached a fever pitch you the viewer were entertained by all of the shit going down
i had the idea for a longer lasting series with 3 different curses curse 1: the thief's curse this curse allows you to steal lives from other players, however if you do not steal another persons life you will lose a life (this incentives thieves to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible) curse 2: the karma's curse other players can now take as many lives as they want from you by killing you, you will always receive 1 life when the curse ends, preventing total death (this incentives protecting yourself by making a strong base or a place you can go in order to hide, this also gives the chance for reds to become yellow once more) curse 3: a gift to those who created this person is given a random task... a sacrifice, this could be a specific player you have to hunt down and kill, a specific mob you have to hunt down and kill, or a specific block you have to find and burn upon completion you are given a life and if you fail to complete it you lose a life. (this makes players explore their surroundings more and forces a unique challenge on the occasion that it occurs) by the way the gift to those who created is super common at the start and slowly gets rarer every single session (starts at 98 and drops by 2% until there is only a 20% chance of it happening) the karma's curse starts off with 1% but increases to 40% 1% at a time same with the thief's curse on average 1/3 individuals will be cursed in some way for that session, meaning serial killers and people who hide from them will slowly become more common everyone will start off with 2 lives and will all have a gift to those who created curse
2 Season 3 ideas: 1) If you kill a member of your own alliance during a boogieman session, you get a life. 2) When you kill using pvp instead of a trap, you gain a heart of health.
For 1), the CCs want to elongate the length of the season, and encouraging them to betray their alliances would make the season shorter than before. For 2), players already get regeneration when they get the message, "you are cured", whether by PvP, or by traps.
I loved your series, I loved the entire season, and your lore is incredible! I absolutely love the connection between Evo and 3rd/Last Life, but I've got a burning question. Does the Watchers using a pumpkin and subtitles and spooky voices have anything to do with Mythrodak's videos? I fully understand that there's probably no connection, but it's such a coincidence that I need to know!
I could totally see Tango being pulled in after Moon Big, with how he 'rebelled' against the moon crash. Similar with Scar, with leading Boatem into the void. That would also have pulled Pearl, Mumbo, and Impulse into the series, since the Watchers would take that as them trying to escape the cycle. And double up on Grian's reputation.
I would like to think evo smp and last/3rd life are connected by Lore. Grian a watcher was not supposed to compete but he did anyway and is doing something... also Grian announced season 3!!!!
So the Tokyo Tower that you wanted to build at the beginning of the series was not a spontaneous idea, in fact planned before the series. When you brought up “tsuki” in the Google Translate, I noticed that it was Japanese. So could’ve the Tokyo Tower have played a role in the lore instead of it being scrapped due to the Southlands?
on topic of breaking out of the loop, maybe if there were a way of expanding the life pool? like crafting lives out of rare items or something like that?
Wait wait wait wait wait, is Pearl a watcher? Was she in the evo series? She might not be apart of this yes but in the lore for some reason it makes sense, it depends if she was in the evo series but in limited life she has the whole thing with "im watching you" and wasn't BigB in the evo series aswell? And not just that in last life Etho said "she's very observent, so when i realized she wasn't scared of me i knew she was the boogeyman" or something along those lines, when Etho suspects it was her from the start in the finale episode in last life and in double life she had a whole villian arc. And also to mention moon is in her name and in hermitcraft, season 8, the season she joined in, they had the storyline of the moon destroying the earth they were living on. And another thing to mention, Grian is IN that series, but the moon also sometimes didn't affect ONLY her (it could've been a glitch but we use this for lore explaning😂) and she even said herself "am i casuing this?" In one of her episodes, and don't we remember Ren i guess "putting out his own theory" that hermitcraft is a simulation?. But then X debunking that? (Which im glad he did because no offense to Ren and Doc but i don't like that storyline😂, but i love that the whole minecraft universe every SMP, every world that every minecraft youtuber or just any other person has created, mabye someone that Ren doesn't even know, he calls the whole thing "The Gigaverse" and i really want to push that more to make it canon in minecraft in general because i love it😆)
The fact that Grian told everyone the rules, and he seems to be the most knowledgeable in this would link to the watchers because if they created this perpetual time loop, Grian would be the one that knows the rules the best as he’s had to watch them for an eternity.
Grian, in his evo series becomes a watcher which ties in nicely to some of this stuff

Another thing with Grian not belonging there and being a watcher could get connected to his absolute slaughtering of a bunch of his old team and with him having maybe a similar hunger as the watchers do :b
the whole watcher thing reminds me of evolution ngl (the smp thing from awhile ago that both grian and martyn were in)
@@elmaoe8026 that makes sense since that’s where he got the idea to use watchers from
It could also be Grian carried about his team and thought that maybe killing them would get them out of this loop of testing them sooner.

well, that got dahark
honestly I love the idea of Grian as a rogue Watcher trying to protect his friends from the other Watchers. But how does that jibe with this whole thing being Grian’s idea in the first place? (Or is that where the line between canon and behind-the-scenes is?)
also love that from any other perspective this is just “Ren and Marten being weird”.

THIRD LIFE
02:09 - In the latter end of Martyn's season, he first comes into contact with "The Shadow", seemingly taking a liking to Martyn.
THE TEASER
06:33 - Martyn releases a Last Life teaser with the words:
_Long have we waited_
_A hunger grows_
_Surpass them all_
_Take friends for foes_
_Live not for others_
_Invest in one_
_For if they fall_
_Ere will be done_
"Take friends for foes" blatantly refers to the Boogeyman.
"Ere Will Be Done" should normally be "Our Will Be Done", which means something is up with the words. And indeed, if you look at the first letter of each line it spells "LAST LIFE".
EPISODES 1 TO 8
07:51 - Episode 1.
11:58 - The Shadow speaks once more:
_Sacrifice those that landed_
_Lessons acknowledged_
_Can claim flags among ashes_
_Help another, never doubt_
_When in need, traverse each route_
The second half plays with the first letter of each word, which spells: "HAND WINTER", very clearly referencing the Red Winter.
15:27 - While the discussion happens at the very end, the words of The Shadow give us a hint at around the halfway point in the episode:
_Tell a lie_
_Sow the seed_
_Undermine_
_Know and free_
_It must be done_
"It Must Be Done".
To make the chase scene less boring CC!Martyn throws in some more "Shadow Speech":
_FORGET THE RULES_
_THE OPPORTUNITY_
_RETRIEVE IT NOW_
_THE REST WILL AGREE_
_END THIS BETRAYAL_
_DO NOT LET HIM ESCAPE_
Since this is a chase scene, Martyn emulated the motion of the feet by alternating between the first letter of the first two words in each line.
The Shadow speaks:
_Why do you linger so_
_You wish to join the shadow?_
_Boo!_
_[A pumpkin face appears]_
_A demonstration is in order_
_Lights extinguish_
_Begin the slaughter_
_OUR WILL BE DONE_
"Begin the slaughter" refers to the carnage that followed in Episode 6. "Lights extinguish" refers to the Shadow Alliance's goal of engulfing the world in darkness. It gives the idea that darkness is good and light is bad. We'll get to the other lines later, including the pumpkin face.
26:45 - Episode 6. Since the carnage happened, Martyn decides to throw in a line from the sequence into his conversation with Grian:
_This is quite the demonstration_
Martyn says that line in front of Grian, and Grian passes it off as an unusual euphemism (probably referring to the chaos that happened earlier in the session). From Martyn's POV, he said it so he can overlay The Shadow's words right on top.
28:03 - Episode 7. Martyn had just witnessed Timmy and Mumbo's deaths, fueling his anguish. After Martyn is chosen as boogey, The Shadow speaks again, pumpkin face included:
_Your time has come_
_To sever ties_
_Four towers burn_
_The last one dies_
_Our Will Be Done_
"To sever ties" means Martyn has to disconnect from the South at this point.
The following conversation ensues:
_THEY'RE ALL GONE_
_N-no!_
_IT'S YOUR FAULT_
_You said only HE had to die!_
_AND YOU FAILED_
_He left though, didn't he?_
_IT WAS NOT THE WAY_
_Oh yeah? And what if I don't like your way?_
_DO AS WE SAY_
_Why should I?_
_WE CAN BRING THEM BACK_
_I don't believe you_
_WE TELL NO LIES_
_Fine, fine!_
_HEED OUR CALL, OUR WILL BE DONE_
Martyn is completely exasperated and confused.
41:45 - The Shadow speaks:
_Taken for fools we are never_
_Make red the sea and work together_
_Provide the means, fear not the blast_
_For if he chooses, the test is passed_
Martyn obliges and throws an end crystal dead center.
FINALE
45:19 - CC!Martyn did not expect a sword fight battle royale at the very end of the episode. Nevertheless he battles it out. Except he still prefers to use explosives. He fails both times.
EPILOGUE
48:00 - This conversation happens.
_[intense panting]_
_Oh my god, oh my god_
_Just give me... That was too much..._
_Just give me a second to take my breath_
_Deep breaths..._
_Oh my god, I feel so lightheaded..._
_Oh my god_
_It's all just dark_
_That means... does that mean... oh my god_
_Did we win?_
_OH THE IRONY_
_TO BE UNDONE BY THE ONE YOU WERE TASKED TO DESTROY_
_EVEN GIVEN THE TOOLS YOU COULDN'T DO IT_
_LEAVING ONLY THE HOUND STANDING WOULD HAVE SUFFICED_
_Sorry but, who are you exactly?_
_THE NERVE_
_YOU KNOW NOT OUR NAME BUT WE HAVE COMMUNED_
_Wait, you're YOU..._
_What about all the rhyming?_
_RHYMING?_
_NO. NOT FOR YOU_
_WE WILL SPEAK PLAINLY NOW SO YOUR FEEBLE BRAIN CAN COMPREHEND US_
_PLUS, THERE'S NOBODY AROUND TO HEAR NOW ANYWAY_
_Feeble!?_
_YES, QUITE_
_YOU MUST UNDERSTAND WYY IT IS YOU FAILED US TWICE_
_[the screen slowly fades to white]_
_YOU'RE MAKING YOUR WAY INTO THE LIGHT AS WE SPEAK_
_Wait a minute. You said "you and your allies will see the end"_
_You said I could bring them all_
_Impulse, Jimmy, Mumbo, Me_
_You said we'd all join you in the end_
_YOU MISUNDERSTAND_
_No no no no no_
_You told me that if I did everything you said, that there would be a place for us!_
_There was no stronghold, there was no portal, so you couldn't have meant that end..._
_AND SO?_
_Unless..._
_HE'S LEARNING_
_...you just meant the end of days, didn't you. The end._
_Done, deal. Yeah cheers buddy, tHaNks FoR lIviNg!_
_One last stand knowing full well that we'd either run out of food, or patience eventually, and then what?_
_We just kill each other?_
_Is that it??_
_AMUSING, IS IT NOT?_
_WE HAD A TASTE BEFORE_
_BACK IN THE WINTER_
_IT WASN'T ENOUGH!_
_THERE WAS SOMETHING MISSING_
_THE ADRENALINE OF WAR SOFTENS THE FEAR OF MEN_
_THEIR SOULS DON'T RING WITH THE COLOUR OF PANIC AND CONFUSION AS THEY TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHATS HAPPENING MOMENTS BEFORE THEIR DEMISE_
_IT'S DELICIOUS_
_OUR HUNGER GREW THOSE MONTHS_
_WE WAITED_
_AND THEN ALL IT TOOK WAS A SIMPLE_

_You mean Scott?_
_HIS WILL TO LIVE IS TOO STRONG_
_HIS FLAME BURNED TOO BRIGHT_
_NOW LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED_
_I'm starting to feel really sleepy..._
_Just tell me one thing before I go._
_Why were you so set on Grian?_
_HMPH, HIM_
_HE WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE THERE_
_HE WAS ONLY EVER MEANT TO WATCH_
_I don't understand._
_YOU WOULDN'T_
_YOU'RE MORE OF A LISTENER_
_YOU DON'T COMPREHEND_
_Please. Just explain it to me_
_NO, WE DON'T THINK WE WILL_
48:40 - "It's all just dark"
Martyn opens his eyes and sees pitch black. He must be in the darkness, so the thought he had won.
49:49 - "Leaving only the Hound standing would have sufficed"
Scott was target number one. Anyone but him should win.
50:15 - "I'm sorry, but who are you exactly?"
Martyn doesn't recognize the voice, even though it sounds the same to us the entire series.
52:46 - "You're making your way into the light as we speak"
The screen slowly changes from black to white. At this point it becomes clear that Martyn had lost.
53:10 - "You and your allies will see the end"
Title drop.
57:46 - "You just meant the end of days, didn't you"
Martyn realizes what The Shadow really meant by the end: the end of the series. All of their series had to end at some point. The Shadow was never really on their side.
58:20 - "Back in the winter"
The Shadow references his experience back in 3rd Life with the Red Winter. They are revealed to consume souls of players passed.
59:18 - "It wasn't enough"
Even souls weren't appetizing enough for The Shadow. These souls didn't have fear and panic in them. The boogeyman fixed that, and now when a boogey kill occurred panic would ring in the victim's soul. That "taste of sweetness" from back in 3rd Life was betrayal.
1:01:24 - "It's delicious"
Cut to the Twitter Trailer that Martyn released before LL started.
_A hunger grows_
The Shadow hadn't been fed in MONTHS. Now they're getting a full-course meal.
1:02:37 "And you all obliged, bar one"
That countdown is the same countdown that tells whether or not you're the boogey.
1:04:10 - "His flame burned too bright"
Another reference to the "Lights Extinguish" line from Episode 5.
1:04:29 - "I'm starting to feel really sleepy"
Martyn begins to fall asleep as he enters the light.
1:11:59 - Martyn arrives in the light.
EVO
1:05:13 - "He was only ever meant to watch"
A late addition.
1:10:46 - "You're more of a listener"
Martyn tried to run away and now he's punished for it.
Q&A
1:13:45 - What happened to the love crystal?
I guess. Grian was the victor of the last season, and is also technically a watcher, so I can see why he went for the /kill and robbed Scott of an epic suicide.
major props for writing all of this out! Deserves a lot more likes
Thank you for summary! I am new here and want to ask something - what is "EVO" and can i watch it?
@@Toki1991 EVO is a server that went on for a few years and it is still watchable but is sadly dead :(
ooo And the reason the watcher's never talked in 3rd life is because by the time they could do anything about Grian being there, Grian was in dept to Scar, so they both found it a fitting punishment and slightly enjoyable to let Grian stay as he was now forced to follow another person.
I like assassin better every person gets a target and if they don't kill them by the time the target turns red they loose a life (or it's like the boogey man you get a target kill them by the end of the day)
Wow that's a interesting concept
That could make a cool series
Ooooh. That means that Empires is the real world and anyone not there is a dream.
1:34:44
I am actually working on a dramatization of Third and last life. This video is helping me immensely.
Any progress on that? I may have picked up a similar task and I'm turning this into a music album.
Y'all I'm planning a last life musical, lol
to be honest, ever since Evo ended and ever since people started using the watchers as a plot point in fanfictions or fan arts or AUs for Hermitcraft, I have always been theorizing on what their motivation could be. I like the idea you came up with very much, and I absolutely adore the idea of 3rd life/last life being an infinite loop, with each time a few new people get sucked into the mess. I do however am still pretty much very confused with what the watchers or the listeners do, why they do their things and their role in the world, since canonically the watchers was meant to represent the viewers
I guess the watchers putting the last life players on a infinite could symbolized the viewers wanting more. it's sorta similar to Danganronpa V3's ending in a way, it shows a sadistic fanbase who wants to see the players suffer for entertainment and it's true to an extent, obviously, we're not sadistic enough like the fanbase Danganronpa V3 was depicting, or hell, like Squid game where the rich put the poor on a dead game for entertainment, but we do want _more_ .
I don't really think this is supposed to put us the viewers in a bad light (same to Danganronpa V3's ending), more so it's the concept of a character massively breaking the 4th wall and finding a way to get out and do their own thing without the influenced of a Watcher or a Listener
idk what I'm trying to achieve with this comment, just some thoughts I have ig, I like the idea of the Watchers and the Listeners being morally grey and the Watchers not being as bad as we first thought, or the Listeners not being as good as they seems
That’s interesting, I always thought the watchers represented the admins
That was a cool essay!
Also I like the points you made, and I agree!
I’ve always viewed them that way too. I think it differs from watcher to watcher. I think some can be downright cruel and others just stand by.
Like player, or in this case human, not all watchers are downright bad. You may find the sympathetic one, or really just the sadistic one, it depends on who strike interest in you first to be honest
And how did you balance the over-controlling watcher with yourself. You didn't fight enough then you will become their puppet, if found a Good one they will protect you, that's basically what we act as well
The Watcher are actually being mentioned in the Bible lore.
NOW I NEED THIS KIND OF FANFICTION IN MY LIFE, IF SOMEONE WHO'S ABLE TO WRITE FOUND THIS INTERESTING I HOPE YOU CAN MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT
Edit: also, haven't watch the last life series completely, but since ZombieCleo congratulates G-Team then does that mean Scott was part of it?
The punishment for failing could be the same.
oooh, and if the target turns red (due to outside forces/not due to you) your target thus changes 👀
If they were communicating to you through the moon, maybe this has something to do with Hermitcraft’s Moon’s Big.
I was thinking that probably x was wanting caves and cliffs and decided to do it within shadow lore
Unlike the random nether reset of season 7
I thought so too!
Especially since then they started a cult and it consisted of MUMBO, GRIAN and Scar was there too I guess-
I mean, the Hermatrix ending DID said there's an intruder, so it could be...
Thank you for showing us behind the curtain a bit.
Never heard of you before 3rd life. But i love what you do.
Do more with Ren. You bounce off each other so well . Much love x
Martyn: Breathes
Me frantically writing D&D notes: Mhm! Mhm! And what happened next??
When it comes to the boogeyman concept there are two opposites:
Scott: HELL NAH
Joel: HELL YEAH
Lol
Ikr, or if you think about it 3rd Life turns into a series like HC and like 5+ years from now it's on like season 8 and still going strong (probably not but still) and we witnessed the beginning since season 1
well stop crying, bucko! :DDDDD
I would like to think evo smp and last/3rd life are connected by Lore. Grian a watcher was not supposed to compete but he did anyway and is doing something... also Grian announced season 3!!!!
The whiplash I get from knowing that Martyn was open to the option of betraying Ren in 3L
I think for season 3 it would be a good idea to get Grian in on your lorebuilding, if Last Life is a bit of a loop made by the Watchers and Grian is a Watcher. Would be nice to see more in-character stuff from him beyond just "moon big".
Right now I'm wondering how things might have changed had Martyn won.
I feel like I should go watch Evo now to get some context on the watchers and listeners.
would definitely recommend this! i’m isolating right now so i have a lot of free time, i made a start today :]
Its an awesome series and the lore is fascinating would reccomend :)
I had the same thought. So I’ve been going through Grian’s playlist. I figured that’d give me Watcher plot since he’s kind of their focus. Now I’m thinking I need to watch Martyn’s pov instead?
@@CharmChampion for listeners
The fundamental randomness and chaos that is the nature of such a death game seems like it's difficult to fully carry out narrative ideas. But it's still insane how much you manage to pull off!
i feel like if Martin joined DSMP this would fit so well to Technos voices, that they are the watchers whispering in his ear for blood :o
:) ps half the battle w storytelling is having a coherent narrative that people can engage with, the grammar and finesse can come after.
if there is a third series, a cool idea might be for the boogeyman mechanic, giving the boogeyman a specific target. everyone (except scott) who was a boogeyman got a kill, and scott didn’t get one by choice (he said he wasn’t gonna bother aiming for a kill). so for example, if martyn were a boogeyman, his target might be etho, and he has to get a kill on etho to be cured. because this would make it harder, maybe just take them down by one life if they don’t manage a kill.
similarly, implementing a buddy system (which was suggested by someone in the chat) to give everyone starting allies would be a good idea too, as it would help create more secure alliances (as the server selects the targets, it could be made so it can’t select teammates), and also prevent there from being 4+ teams, as it was a bit complicated.
if they were playing with more lives and more people, you could also have the boogeyman curse pass between players. you might have to remove players name of who killed who in chat (so for example, instead of saying “etho was slain by inthelittlewood”, it could say “??? was killed by inthelittlewood”), as this would hide who is now the boogeyman, and players would have to deduce who it is by who it can’t be (so for example, in this scenario, martyn theoretically could be a boogeyman, and it he could’ve killed the boogeyman through self-defence. however, if they know martyn wasn’t the boogeyman, players would have to be very careful who they trust, and use process of elimination to work out who it was. for example, if impulse and scar were to get her at the time, they’d know it couldn’t be either of them) this wouldn’t work with such small amounts of lives, as it would end the series very quickly
if that were the case, you’d also have to keep the number of boogeymen per session to one, as it would be passed around you’d have minimum 2 per session (in theory). it would lead to a lot of chaos and death, which i think it pretty much the motto of 3rd/last life :D
sounds like a "hitman" mechanic
I personally believe that the watchers are growing in size and power so they chose to take friends of those trapped to feed them as more conflic breaks out.
How did he plan all that out and place the letters perfectly in the sentence, while maintaining the anxiety? Man this guy should be a poet.
The fact that everyone's last episode on the season finale is called "The end" or "the final red life" makes me think we aren't getting a season 3.
Oh~ u dont know......u dont know what coming....
Poor soull...
@@kitsunereko9557 hang on, what?
@@heatherfall_3996 please watch game theory about hermitcraft season 8 and come back if u still dont understand what happen....
And WHY Grian make Last Life exist if dug enough u will know it....
@@kitsunereko9557 I don't really care that much about the Lore I just like the series.
41:38 "i can't believe the shadows are homophobic" well they did kinda ensure his husband died as well so.... /hj
Thoughts?
Holy cow, the EVO smp was so long ago, I'm blown away with that reference
Support for the watchers only being able to take the form of pumpkins: pumpkin tunnel, they were always watching over the funky bird guy
I have only watched the last episode of Grian's Evo series to understand this watcher thing, but I love the Grian watcher lore so much!
Imagine just wanting to set up and play a light story-based Minecraft series with your gaming buddies and your friend turns your character into a malevolent demigod
my biggest flex:
martyn read out my message in the chat :D
Time stamp?? :D
@@zthehuman7051 around 1:45:56 ish, i asked “why doesn’t character martyn mention grian as an ally when speaking to the watchers” :D
@Nerdish cool :D
Something I kinda came up with and thought was cool
Background info- the watchers don't like Grian and Scott, Grian and Scott where the only ones who's soulmates they had previously teamed up with In the seires they won, Grian and Scar in 3rd life and Scott and Pearl in Last life,
As punishment for the things they did that the watchers didn't like, in double life the paired up Grian and Scott with previous alliances that had worked really well for them and twisted their relationships to something they would hate.
Inb4 the memes of Grian always starting wars in HC become canon to the shadow lore-
Man this lore… it’s AMAZING!!
if/when we get a season 3 i deffo want more lore around lizzie.
37:31: No Anakin, don't trust the chancellor.
I just remembered, the whole: there is something out there that feeds on the chosen and it is an infinite loop reminds me of the storyline for Dissidia Final Fantasy.
1:00:38 "we are on the tail end of it"
the other 52 minutes might disagree
ok so here me out.
When people turned red and the boogies came out and the bloodshed reached a fever pitch you the viewer were entertained by all of the shit going down
i had the idea for a longer lasting series with 3 different curses
curse 1: the thief's curse
this curse allows you to steal lives from other players, however if you do not steal another persons life you will lose a life
(this incentives thieves to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible)
curse 2: the karma's curse
other players can now take as many lives as they want from you by killing you, you will always receive 1 life when the curse ends, preventing total death
(this incentives protecting yourself by making a strong base or a place you can go in order to hide, this also gives the chance for reds to become yellow once more)
curse 3: a gift to those who created
this person is given a random task... a sacrifice, this could be a specific player you have to hunt down and kill, a specific mob you have to hunt down and kill, or a specific block you have to find and burn upon completion you are given a life and if you fail to complete it you lose a life.
(this makes players explore their surroundings more and forces a unique challenge on the occasion that it occurs)
by the way the gift to those who created is super common at the start and slowly gets rarer every single session (starts at 98 and drops by 2% until there is only a 20% chance of it happening)
the karma's curse starts off with 1% but increases to 40% 1% at a time
same with the thief's curse
on average 1/3 individuals will be cursed in some way for that session, meaning serial killers and people who hide from them will slowly become more common
everyone will start off with 2 lives and will all have a gift to those who created curse
maybe it should be renamed karma's blessing
2 Season 3 ideas:
1) If you kill a member of your own alliance during a boogieman session, you get a life.
Martin talks about the moon in Last Life, The moon is falling in Hermitcraft 8 = Watchers are Return
Of course Mumbo didn't even get into the meeting!
Dang Martin is so talented!! I didn't know last life and 3rd life had lore this is amazing!
watching the whole vid and the only thing that i cant stop thinking abt is PUMPKIN TUNNEL.
Oh my gosh, I found another old lore stream! And again, I enjoyed the hecc out of it
I have a question, it's a real stretch but, seeing the current state of the moon in Hermitcraft, are the watchers coming to the smp? xD
Also Smajor probally is not on good tearms with the shadow any more after winng after he "mocked the shadow by not taking part in bogymen
I'm so sad for character Martin.
Wow! Thank you for all your effort you put into this for us.
also, the songbirds sing could be about how Jimmy dies first and therefore, the Canary (type of songbird) sings
I love all the mystery will Sub! And now the end falling seen can make more sense. “Character Martin” is heading to his next torment.
I freaking love this?!?!
I need to go and watch Evo now
I want more lore I would love to read this as a novel or a comic
Please
Pretty please
I do think only one boogeyperson and only when there's no active reds would give that potential for a longer lived series.
Love this Lore i really hope that in a third season that can maby be expanded on?
Thanks for uploading this :D
And double up on Grian's reputation.
the phases of the moon are the eye blinking!! :D
I would like to think evo smp and last/3rd life are connected by Lore. Grian a watcher was not supposed to compete but he did anyway and is doing something... also Grian announced season 3!!!!
I love how Grian(canonically a watcher) is just like "eh I don't care if I'm hated."
So the Tokyo Tower that you wanted to build at the beginning of the series was not a spontaneous idea, in fact planned before the series. When you brought up “tsuki” in the Google Translate, I noticed that it was Japanese. So could’ve the Tokyo Tower have played a role in the lore instead of it being scrapped due to the Southlands?
i would love a 3rd season of last life! it was so good!
1:36:33 “third series may never come”
Now: fifth series about to end
Sixth series ongoing now, lol
They never knew how far it would go. nor did I, watching the amazing first one
i love this lore so much
I hope to god for a season 3
Ive watched grian and scotts 3rd and last life
I had no idea there was lore waht
Jack o lantons don’t make sense for the represaition of the watchers because they make emit light and the wachers are dark
They didn't emit light though, they were carved pumpkins technically. Hollow bois
on topic of breaking out of the loop, maybe if there were a way of expanding the life pool? like crafting lives out of rare items or something like that?
At 1:33:30 they basically give the idea for Double Life.
Martyn's a mad bastard. I love it.
Martyn is the equivalent of Morrowseer from WoF, but a little less evil.
(Which im glad he did because no offense to Ren and Doc but i don't like that storyline😂, but i love that the whole minecraft universe every SMP, every world that every minecraft youtuber or just any other person has created, mabye someone that Ren doesn't even know, he calls the whole thing "The Gigaverse" and i really want to push that more to make it canon in minecraft in general because i love it😆)
You should have betrayed ren in 3rd life and said "listen up strawberry names (becouse they are red) we are doing things my way now!"
I would love if it's like dbd entity repeating and repeating endless loops with no escape for it's gain
Then the fandom came up with a cool concept and design for the watchers and listeners. Which I love
I hope you do some lore in the next life series coming early 2023
50:48 like that one thing in captain marvel? The "supreme intelligence," I think?
YEAH, the Watchers are canon again!
But like you still didn’t explain the love crystal! What were you going to use it for if it didn’t get blown up?
13:28 he forgot the easter egg on every second letter in that sentence, AHHA!
I was right it was because grian was a watcher! Woohoo!
So..the watchers are basically hawkmoth.
