The album title is a play on words from "The Iliad", the ancient Greek poem, and "Kamakiri", the fictional name for the Scottish-Balinese futuristic car that the protagonist is driving throughout the songs on the album. Thus, "Kamakiriad", an epic journey poem of the Kamakiri.
In the April 3, 1993 issue of Billboard, Fagen talked to Timothy White about the meaning of the name “Kamakiriad.”
“Kamakiri is an invented car,” he said. “The word in Japanese actually means ‘praying mantis,’ but a Kamakiriad would be a journey, like the Iliad. The story takes place a few years in the future, when this guy gets this environmentally correct car, a multi-screen magical exploration vehicle with a bionic backseat vegetable garden.”

As I recall, DF said at the time that it was conceived as an ad for the Kamakiri - a 'Kamakiri-ad'. Seems to fit with the SD sense of irony.

Donald’s four solo albums are fantastic and very much in the Steely Dan vein. My favorite from 2006 is the title song from his 3rd solo album, Morph The Cat. Walter Becker’s two solo albums 11 Tracks of Whack and Circus Money are excellent too. 🔥❤️

Walter was the major contributor to the shady, sardonic thema and edgy lyrical style of SD.
He also had a helluva ear for hooks, made tasty mixes, and played some sneaky-mean guitar.
His solo work is excellent, but one must take time to digest the lyrics to truly appreciate his genius.

Donald's solo work tends to be bright, jazzy and funky, Walter's darker and more cynical, with a lot of Reggae influence. Both brilliant. And of course, you can distinctly hear their shared influence on the Steely Dan recordings.

Love all of Don's Solo albums! My favorite is still his debut "The Nightfly" because it was the very first CD I ever purchased for my brand new CD player/stereo, and for one personal reason that led to my marriage. When my wife and I were dating, I was waiting for her to get ready to go out to dinner and I was rifling through her vinyl collection. To my intense satisfaction, I found "The Nightfly" in her collection. I knew I had a winner. Now 25 years and two adult kids later, we are still happily married. Please finish off "The Nightfly" as a reaction, you will not be disappointed! "Green Flower Street" is next after "IGY".

Kamakiriad (Japanese for praying mantis) is a futuristic automobile that the protagonist of the album is driving in, the song evoking a future with groove and happiness. This album is great. The first song I heard from it was the unbelievable good TOMORROW'S GIRLS when both my girlfriend and I accidentally got list in Yonkers, NY on our way to Boston and Tomorrow's Girls came on the rafio and we didn't care if we were lost.

My father loves big band and jazz. He took us to free concerts in the 1970's where the latest incarnations of his favorite big bands would play - Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, etc. The bands in the 70's would play some Chicago tunes and later Steely Dan. When Kamakiriad came out, I played the CD for my Dad and he commented "I taught you well". My father is 91 now and just came back from the "Four Freshman" conference. Four Freshman were four guys from Indiana University who sang four part harmony and played instruments. The group still exists today as they wanted to keep the group going when the original members retired. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys loved Four Freshman and would steal players from them for the Beach Boys tours. Donald's Nightfly has a song "Maxine" that is almost pure Four Freshman sound. The Four Freshman even did a cover of Maxine on one of their albums after Nightfly came out. Four Freshman's first big hit was a song called "Graduation Day". Donald uses the word "graduation" in Maxine. When I played Maxine for my Dad recently, he got a big grin. There is a TH-cam video of just Donald singing Maxine with only his vocal track and his overdubbed harmonies are perfect. th-cam.com/video/_zYe_p8YuB8/w-d-xo.html

Kamakiriad is the second solo album by Steely Dan artist Donald Fagen, released in 1993. ... Walter Becker played guitar and bass and produced the album.

  • @danyondavis
    @danyondavis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You both will enjoy the entirety of Walter's second solo album "Circus Money", as it is a full reggae album with lots of deep and heavy grooves. The reggae rhythm is more pronounced at various points, and faint at others times but never indiscernible. The highlight track for me is a very subtle reggae, pop/ r&b tune called "Downtown Cannon".
But I would suggest doing "Snowbound" off of "Kamarirad" (featuring Becker on bass) next, or "Book of Liars" off Walter's first solo album "11 Tracks of Whack" (featuring Fagen on keyboards). Might then be good to dip into something like "Reelin' in the Years" off of "Alive in America" pursuant to your interest in '90s Dan.

Sounds great with the new microphone! On Kamakiriad the best tracks are Tomorrow's Girls, Snowbound, On the Dunes, Teahouse on the Tracks, Countermoon, Florida Room - almost all of the album. TransIsland Skyway IMO from my POV on composition is one of the two weakest tracks along with Springtime (except the introduction). However, the production is tremendous.
I like the Sunken Condos album a bit better (and certainly The Nightfly) than Kamakiriad. Morph the Cat is also very good...you just can't miss with Donald Fagen!
*Walter Becker produced Kamakiriad,* so Kamakiriad is nearly Steely Dan. Tomorrow's Girls and Snowbound (co-written with Becker) sound exactly like Steely Dan! Donald Fagen's horn charts on Kamakiriad are fantastic.
MTC: The Night Belongs to Mona, the Great Pagoda of Funn, What I Do, H Gang
SC: Slinky thing, Good Stuff, I'm Not the Same Without You, Miss Marlene, Weather in My Head, Memorabilia
Nightfly: Besides IGY - New Frontier, The Goodbye Look, title track, Maxine

This track is off the " Kamakiriad " album which was the second solo album by Steely Dan artist Donald Fagen and was released in 1993. It was his first collaboration with Steely Dan partner Walter Becker since 1986. Becker played guitar and bass and produced the album. The album is a futuristic, optimistic eight-song cycle about the journey of the narrator in his high-tech car, the Kamakiri (Japanese for praying mantis). Mr. Fagan has a unique ability to take us on a "ride" with him.... sometimes in the past, sometimes in the present and in this case... the future.

The bass line is so bouncy in this, it just brings the song to life. Another here who got this shortly after its release, and as others have suggested, Florida Room is just a fabulous beat with a great horn section.

It was this very album back in the day that ended my lifelong quest for the very best speakers and began my quest for the very best headphones I could find. Thanks a ton Donald!! I never debuted a SteelyD or Donald Fagen album in my life. Bought them all blind on the day of release.... I am sure by now you understand exactly what I mean!

Masterful Donald Fagan has never written a bad song. Nighfly is a fucking masterpiece and Morph The Cat is superb.

For the most part, I only know the SD songs my friends used to play in the car, about 45-50 years ago. Thanks for continuing my indoctrination and carrying the mantle.

On the paper so to speak this is a Donald Fagen solo album but if we scratch on the surface we'll get another picture. The producer here was a guy called Walter Becker as in the Walter Becker whom also is credited as guitarist. Yes it's the Walter Becker! And the sound is very Steely Dan ish so i say it's actually a SD album!

Find "Century's End"... slower tune, but I love the vibe of this Donald Fagen song.

Hi Guys ! Onto more solo albums ! Woohooo ! This is a brilliant album. Great reaction to a superb track ... the kind of song that Baloo The Bear would say .." I'm gone man ... I'm solid gone" ! .. So you still have a lot of Steeley stuff to get through and lets not forget any live albums. I got their latest live ; "Northeast Corridor" on cd and the production is so amazing, you would swear it's a studio album. Only the audience tells you it's not. Byeee ! Jim X

If you like this sound, then you should check out Janie Runaway by the Dan from Two Against Nature.. it has the same funky sound and I think is probably from around the same time period. I know you will love it! I love when you guys do Steely Dan... I don't think you've heard anything that you didn't like! Love the channel guys!

Kamakiriad is a very enjoyable Fagan Album.
I saw when the groove got you Lexi your arm went up to the drum rhythm. 🥁
That's how I feel about all the music from Walter and Donald. Danceable.
Walter's "CIRCUS MONEY" Album if you would like to hear Walter play Reggae Bass Guitar Rhythms. 🎸

Becker played on some of Donald's solo stuff. They are a team... becker was quite a part of the sarcams and droll hummor.

Maybe you should check out Rodriguez for a Night from David Crosby's most recent album. It was written by Fagen!
Interesting to hear his words sung by someone else.

Hey! Love this Channel! I've been a Fan Fan since 2001. You might want to check out 'Everything Must Go' from 2003. Title Cut is amazing! The whole Album was recorded in Analog! One of their best. Highly underrated! Also Monsieur Becker's final Album recorded with Steely Dan.
