  • This is the story of the discovery of the Brontë Family Portrait in Hill House in Banagher, Ireland, in 1914. It was found in the home of Arthur Bell Nicholls, Charlotte Brontë’s husband, by his second wife, Mary Anna. The painting was made by the girl’s brother, 17-year-old Branwell Brontë. Directed by Maebh O'Regan, this film includes a reconstruction of the events in 1914 , and concludes with an interview with Dr Sarah Moulden in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

This is both a little odd, and brilliant. A brilliantly odd, and amazing insight, an intriguing survey of such an important literary portrait. I had no idea it was found on top of a wardrobe in Ireland.
    Brilliant work and research.
    Thank you.

The bronte family are, to say the least, fascinating, and the direct links to the north of ireland little known.

I don’t j dear stand why it’s not been restored. How do big fold lines benefit the look of the portrait. More famous works that that have been restored. It could look so much better.

Charlotte Bronte died in 1855. In her brother's painted portrait she was 18, Emily was 16 and Anne was 14. The painting is in the National Portrait Gallery in London England.

There are no official photo's of the Bronte siblings. The portrait of Charlotte was commissioned by her agent. The artist was George Richmond and it was pencil, chalk and mixed media. This work originally hung in the parsonage, it was then then brought to Banagher and Charlotte's husband Arthur left it to the National Portrait Gallery in London in 1906. Branwell's portrait of his sisters was painted when he was 17. Charlotte was 18, Emily, 16 and Anne 14. I hope this helps.

@@maebhoreganwhy on earth didn’t her agent want an actual photo? Photography was going full steam ahead by the time CB was well known. It’s almost unbelievable that there’s no photo of her. The drawing isn’t a good likeness apparently.

@@MoominJude Why wouldn't her agent want a photo? I assume he really did want such an image. However, Printing was different then, Drawings from photos were better to reproduce than photos themselves.

@@maebhoregan Because i am an animator and a portrait artist, I have a {professional opinion") about likenesses. I can compare this photo image with the known painting. I believe it to be different images of the same women.
