Did this team need today's Indian test pitches to win matches for India? They were genuine spin bowlers. They didn't need the pitches, they could defeat the batsmen in the air. That's pure skill.
You are wrong . Those days I’m home games they used to make true turning tracks . Have a look at their overseas record not so great . Today a bowler plays in 3 formats of the game so any day they bowl more.

I can recall my memory in 1975 பிரசன்னா took 8 wickets in Auckland. 1971 West Indies series India Won Venkatraghavan and Chandra Sekar did well. Even in Australia in Melbourne Chandrasekar took 6 for 56 and 6 for 52 or 56 in both Innings of Mrlbourne Test. In Kingston West Indies Chandrasekar had good 6 wickets spell. 1971 India test series win over England were achieved mainly due to Chandrasekar. Venkatraghavan took 22 wickets in the series of 1971 against West Indies with very good economy against Sobers Team.
Must say the batting technique against spin were poor in those days. So spinners will take advantage of that. You don't really require help from pitches. Today's scenario is not like that
I remember the 1978 visit of the Indian team to Pakistan. The cricketing ties were revived after 18 years and only Mushtaq Muhammad had survived from the last tour. But what won my heart-and the heart of many Pakistanis- was that Bishen Bedi read an appeal for O negative blood for a cancer patient. He noted it down and called them, and donated his blood so that the young boy may live a few days longer. What a gesture! It was greatly appreciated by all on our side of the border. President Zia personally thanked him on behalf of the entire Pakistani nation. While Pakistan won the series, I was actually sorry to see how he and many others were treated after the loss by the Indian authorities.
Amazing spinners all of them. They came unstuck against Zaheer Abbas on flat tracks in 1978. But that's because Zed was a brilliant player off the back foot with a very high backlift. Derek Understood told me he was the hardest batsman he ever bowled to. Against Underwood in county cricket, Derek told me he seemed to be 200 not out everytime.
These four world class spinners in tandem meant several very good ones couldn't make it to national team, eg Padmakar Kashinath Shivalkar, Rajinder Goel, Mumtaz Hussain, Bharanaiah Vijayakrishna. Another Vaman Viswanath Kumar played just 2 tests
I wouldn't go that far. They were instrumental in getting India's first series wins in new Zealand, england and west indies, but at no point could you say that India was a dominant test team. That's because our seam bowling was the worst of all test playing nations, and we only had three batsmen who averaged 40 plus between 1971 and 1975 : gavaskar, Vishwanath and amarnath.
A very good video to take me back to my ages of cricket, Love all the four spinners too much till today, they have created fear in eyes of Great Batsmen of their Era , I can't forget even 403 fourth innings chase by stupendous two little masters and rock like Amarnath, Explosive Brijesh Patel......in those days TV was not there , we used to hear commentaries by Great Jasdev Singh, Sushil Doshi.......in those days it was really a gentlemen's game............now in current days cricket we have lost all these........
Narottam Puri was the best English commentator then. So melodious was his commentary in those days. We loved to listen his commentary at times than match itself.
Devraj Puri, Bobby Talayar khan,Ananth Rao and expert comments by Lala Amarnath - pure delight.Lala was an expert at reading pitches and predicting results.

Whenever a big shot like a four or rarely for a six was hit or a wicket fell, the noise of the spectators was like music to the ears with great excitement. Proud to be a Kannadiga from the sacred land of Karnataka from where the cricketing giants and legends like EAS Prasanna, Chandra, G.R. Vishwanath, Brijesh Patel, Syed Kirmani and very recently Dravid/Kumble emerged and gloriously served Indian Cricket.

Of all the four venkatraghavan is the most talented. A better batsman, a fantastic fielder and a very clever captain. He got the least no of tests. All the four are fantastic spinners having unique talents. If they started career now all the four will be high demand in ipl. Venkatraghavan will fetch the maximum price. All the four will end up with records difficult to surpass just like tie in 20 grand slams in tennis among 3 legends.
Rafa,Novak and Roger are world's All time greats. Where as our spinners were out country's only that era's greats. Your comaprison to the tennis trio is too stupid and foolish. I got to hear some stories of Padmakar Shivalkar from my grandfather. He once took 8 wickets for 2 runs in 8 overs in a Ranji game which he happened to watch live in the stadium. Unlucky for him and Goel to never play even a single match for India
Mr. Nasseruddin shau didn't appreciate great dattu phadkar who made himself layed his devotion to infian cricket. He made a venturu in 1947 48 shakst Aussies , in 1952 in England he took both inningd wickets of sir Leonard Hutton each time individual score at 10. He took both innings wivkets of dangerous of Clyde Walcott in 5th test match at brabourne stadium, then Bombay.
All four spinners were great technicians,master of spin ,equally good..Chandra was sometimes faster than Jeff Thompson his googlies unplayable..Prasanna was the master of flight, could spin the ball on a granite,deceptive in the air ..Bedi, left arm spinner, most accurate among them ,a real match winner......Venkit the most intelligent bowler , i rate him as the best..There were other spinners too Bapunathkarni and subash Gupte..
They were awesome. But their contemporaries- Lance Gibbs and Derek Underwood - were better performers in terms of bowling average, number of wickets taken and consistency. Among the four Chandra was a match winner, Prasanna who is rated as the best in the business was known for his guile and Bedi was crafty. Venkat was a few notches behind the three, though Gary Sobers felt that he was the best off spinner of his time.
Agree with you. Venkat was a brilliant fielder and also the best of the quartet as s batsmen. His bowling was also very good. He played a big part in the victories against West Indies and England in 1971. In fact of the quartet he has always been given the least importance. He was also a good captain

No doubt these four spinners are very talented and gifted . . But can’ forget great Trio of spinners Subhash Gupte Vinu Mankad and of course Gulam Mohmad.
Common. With due respect Never. Forget each one alone, all together Pls tell how many they won matches for India. Don't glorify unnecessarily. Pace and spin together is good weapon Sometimes pace can take you on their own but not spin because spin requires dear pitches.
In today's cricket world fielding maestros could be named as Jonty ...but the pioneer was indeed... SOLKAR... ... Unmatched at short leg.... Unfortunately we may not have the clips of those days.. Playing without ( lesser) much compensation itself is an achievement...

My goodness! Did you ever see Chandra bowl? Even when Bedi was taking wickets, he used to be replaced by Chandra! For me Chandrasekhar is the best spinner Bharat produced.

They were awesome. But their contemporaries- Lance Gibbs and Derek Underwood - were better performers in terms of bowling average, number of wickets taken and consistency. Among the four Chandra was a match winner, Prasanna who is rated as the best in the business was known for his guile and Bedi was crafty. Venkat was a few notches behind the three, though Gary Sobers felt that he was the best off spinner of his time.

Venkat was a brilliant fielder and also the best of the quartet as s batsmen. His bowling was also very good. He played a big part in the victories against West Indies and England in 1971. In fact of the quartet he has always been given the least importance. He was also a good captain

. But can’ forget great Trio of spinners Subhash Gupte Vinu Mankad and of course Gulam Mohmad.

My goodness! Did you ever see Chandra bowl? Even when Bedi was taking wickets, he used to be replaced by Chandra! For me Chandrasekhar is the best spinner Bharat produced.
