I think you meant 11:47, but you're right! It's Meowth's sprite from Red & Blue as well, not sure how I overlooked that one. That means they did have a reference for Meowth, but what I said about the sprite art being redrawn by Himeno is probably still true. Very interesting!
The Japanese-only sequel that eventually got an English translation is so good....so many more deck possibilities, with the Team Rocket cards, some neat Japanese-only vending machine promos, and a lot more Gameboy exclusives. The first game has limited replay value because there are only so many viable cards and decks, and you just see a lot of the same cards each playthrough. But there are so many in the 2nd game, it feels like a real CCG where you are basically forced to just work with whatever you are lucky enough to get. The gyms are also a lot more interesting, with certain battles forcing your deck to be built in very specific ways (must include 4 Rattatas, only water energies, etc). You can't just modify your starter deck and make one other to counter its weaknesses and steamroll everything with one or two decks. Deckbuilding is a much bigger part of the experience.
I used GB Ditto in my Eevee deck My only basic Pokémon in the deck were 4 Eevee and 4 Ditto, so Ditto always Morphed into another Eevee, allowing me to use more than 4 Eeveelutions in a single game Plus there was versatility there, since I ran 12 Eeveelution cards (2 of each of the 6 different ones), letting me have choices on what to evolve into to best suit the situation It wasn't the best deck, but it was a fun concept that worked fairly well for what it was, and I enjoyed using it
You get a trophy for sheer creativity. Those are the kinds of deck ideas that keep me coming back to the game. I'll have to give it a whirl my next playthough, but I'll remember you coming up with it though ;)
I actually used the GB Marowak and GB Pidgeot to rather good success in playthroughs before. GB Marowak, I used in a Do the Wave Wigglytuff deck, where while not crucial, it served as a good way to max out the bench for Do the Wave. Coupled with Cubone's stalling ability and Jigglypuff's ability to also summon mons to the bench, the deck had a surprising amount of synergy. GB Pidgeot, I used in two decks that, admittedly, were rather gimmicky. The first one was an explosion deck utilizing the Pidgey line's whirlwind ability to slowly spread damage across the bench to then blow up the remains with Golem. This one worked okay-ish, but was fun to see when it worked out. The other one was a Gengar deck following the same general principle of spreading damage, but the goal was to then move those damage counters spread by Pidgeot and friends with Gengar's Pokepower, as well as picking off mons on the bench with Dark Mind. That last one, I remember very fondly because I based it on the attack Ominous Wind and it just happened to work out really well. Obviously most of these are still gimmicky, but I had lots of fun with the random nature of these two cards. I don't think I ever saw that Mew card. This was a really interesting watch!
The mew card is only obtained by the card pop functionality in the game. Very unlikely that people agreed to meet up to talk about the game back likely because everyone was really young when they were playing it.
I'm still missing one card in this game after so many years... I believe it's a Venusaur from that card pop thing. Edit: yeah it's that damn Venusaur card pop T.T
I'm a play Pokémon league professor who redownloaded this game because of this video. One thing that sucks about the this game is sometimes you know you're going to lose like 10 turns ahead of time and you can't really forfeit. So you're stuck there waiting out the loosing game.
Fun fact: Dark Raichu in TCG2 is a game-exclusive card that was never game-exclusive at all. Presumably, they turned it into a game-exclusive version because they couldn't code the attack properly, so they just replaced the coin flips with randomization. It still works the same way as it does in real-life (you may think it has a 33% chance each to deal 0, 10 or 20 damage to the bench, but it's actually a 50% chance for 0 damage and a 25% chance each for 10 or 20 damage).
Always glad to see content regarding the GB Pokémon TCG titles! They've got a lovely level of weirdness and jank, and the GB exclusive cards are no exception!
Zapdos (GB) can hit your benched Pokémon too, so it’s not a very reliable card... unless you have an all Zapdos (GB) deck, and that can completely demolish your opponents, with the only real roadblock being decks containing Mr. Mime.
Actually, Zapdos's attack can actually hit itself with the reason being somehow the card being accessible PRIOR to Nintendo finding out about the game in the first place. I believe that there is even an explanation provided inside of the game itself as well that even mentioned that Nintendo DID NOT program THEMSELVES as well. Actually, Nintendo DID NOT even hear of the game until I capped out fully ALL of the cards in the game as well. Actually the game came out JUST BEFORE Lass came out as well, which is why the game DOES NOT have it. Yes the card is ACTUALLY REAL as well!!!! Actually part of the script as well is that the ability of Zapdos can ACTUALLY hit itself as well, despite the person likely ever really seeing it themselves in person as well. I believe the text, possibly mentionned somwhere else possibly, even mentioned something about this exact video getting released later on, although they apparently DID MAKE sticker cards later on as well as we apparently have one as well.
That ditto is actually super good in a deck that only uses high powered basic pokemon and no evolved pokemon, particularly if you don't have enough copies of the other pokemon already. I think it might've been in the deck I used to beat that game for the first time
It's notable that there's a Jigglypuff card which is a full render of a GB card shown in prospector catalogues and suspected to be an unreleased promo. As the owner of a dedicated 1100 card Jigglypuff binder, this makes me sad.
I came here from the algorithm!! this was a really interesting video! it's really cool how the GB game had cards exclusive to itself! that must have been super special for anyone playing back then :D definitely gonna check out the channel more :)
I would kill for any one of these, especially the legendary birds, to be printed as secret rares in a set or something. Outside of that, these are such cool novelties. I absolutely love them. As for how to translate the “random basic Pokémon” to tabletop, you either don’t and just make it clearly you can’t use them and completely keep the font and stuff in the pixel style, or you make it so you shuffle, then draw until you get the desired card. Would be a cool nod to some Pokémon TCG history!
Huzzah! He has emerged from the cave once more and delivered yet another gem! In all seriousness, love your editing and structure style, a new upload is always a treat!
This is a super cool topic! I’ve never been to big into the TCG, but I still enjoy the online version from time to time. I do, however collect the cards, and just seeing this stuff is really cool!
Loved this game as a kid! Eventually got the second game on my phone that I still play from time to time. Would love to see more about the tcg games since people focus more on the rpg games, which I understand. Subbed!
I find it so interesting how the sprite art being different could mean the card was made after the fact. Your research and ability to make a clear and interesting video amazes me!
This video is fascinating - thank you for all your work putting this together! (Also I really love your narration, it's so nice to listen to and well paced.)
I loved playing the GB TCG when I was young. At first it lay in my room for months since it was too complicated. Later I got the hang if it. When I was able to play I bugged my friends to play with the trading cards but Yu-Gi-Oh was easier to play so we stuck with that. I still remember the struggle to get all cards in the game which consisted of winning all events and getting tons of booster packs. There was also a "trick" to get mostly heads through pressing [A] when the bright side was up. I appreciate that this trip to the past!
think this game is one of the ones I'm most nostalgic for from the game boy Era. love to find out more about it. now to put new batteries in my color and play it for a bit
New subscriber here! I really appreciate that you give so much attention to the GB games and how they connect to the irl TCG. A lot of people tend to write-off the GB games as footnotes when talking about the TCG history.
Always wish we got these in some form or shape. I know they worked the Great Rocket's Mewtwo to make it work for actual gameplay. Really fun card design even if they aren't good.
I LOVE THIS GAME! I still play it in 2023. If you haven't played it yet please give it a try :) They also made pokemon trading card game 2 but it was only released in Japan BUT you can find actual copies on ebay that are translated to English. Its very fun as well but its a little harder than the 1st game in my opinion.
The meowth trading card Gameboy Color exclusive, as shown in the game, card got released later on. Super Energy Removal I know was made physical later on, and I was wanting to having it physically when I was playing the game a lot when I was younger.
Also be careful on how you play the game, as it is designed to wipe out and completely block you from logging in with the same email address and also possibly brick any device that is being used to play it on, all in a single occurance of it happening when the screen is all blocks and the character is unable to move. The reason for it occurring is being read from index cards. I am honestly telling the truth here, and it will only make sense to you upon triggering it yourself.
I think it could be possible to do some of these effects. Like choosing a random Pokémon to attack would involve the opponent picking up their Pokémon and shuffling, fan them out face down and have you pick one. A lot of effort but would be good at making your opponent really annoyed lol
I grew up on this game and your explanation of cards people didn't really see... is valid, though, I think I can go VERY in depth with my own interpretation of how good this and ptcg2 was since I literally grew up with it and HAD to experience the second game even though we only had the ONE translation and it wasn't perfect at the time XD I just . I LOVE this game / franchise / thing, to DEATH. I AM WAY TOO passionate, haha, thank you so much for your coverage of this and I'm thankful youtube eventually reached me on this... it's not like I explain to people often how Pokemon Trading Card Game on the GB legit was prob my absolute most fan favorited ever game that I grew up with. The soundtrack, Imakuni mechanics, just how it overall played, I LOVE this game to DEATH!!! hahaha. I'ma go hyper adhd nerd and make a good cover about this game for sure, at least, I hope so hahaha. maybe poke me and remind me to, as my adhd episodes really spill over and I forget but like holy crap this is legit one of my most cherished memories and I LOOOOOOVE this game to death, I even created a deck that literally CANNOT BE POSSIBILY BEAT IN ANY MANNER EVER. I hard tested it against the end game / post game deck machine and won over 100 consecutive rounds nonstop before. Ahahahahaa, oh gosh, I'm being really too much ok ok ok um ahem, thank you so much for reminding me how much I love this game and idk maybe we can talk about it and nerd out if it means much to you, if not, I hope anyone else that feels passion for it can talk to me and we can just JAM OUT. Maybe make a podcast about it idk ahahahaha xD
I really wish I knew where my Meowth lvl 14 is. It's not a super expensive card or anything but the game itself is really special to me and since the card came with it I'd love to have the two back together again.
Anyway, you got my sub :) I hope you'll release more Gameboy TCG videos and I'm definitely interested in seeing you tackle some other content. I think you've definitely got what it takes to be a really good channel.
Marowak's Wail attack can help you when you have powerful Basic pokemon in your deck and you have nothing on your bench. This would make things so much easier for you as all you got to do after that is give them the energies they need.
That Ditto is a beast in a Eevelution only deck, essentially is a fifth/sixth copy of Eevee, especially if you haven't drawn one and have an Eevelution in hand to whip out!
I made a deck with the Legendary Zapdos and Ditto. As long as Zapdos (or a morphed Ditto) is the only pokemon on your side, it consistently hits your opponent for 70
I’m surprised no one is talking about the one Zapdos GB deck, which is the most broken deck in the game. Just put 1-2 of those Zapdos in your deck, and fill the rest with trainers for card draws, potions, full heals, energy removals and computer searches. Put no other Pokémon in the deck. Really shows how broken trainer cards are back in the day lol
The GB Ditto and Electrode cards are unique in that they were created to replace cards from the tabletop game that couldn't be replicated in the Game Boy game; Fossil Ditto and Base Electrode. Fossil Ditto had a Pokemon Power, Transform, that effectively made it act as whatever the opposing Pokemon was at all times, except it couldn't evolve and Transform was always active even if they opponent didn't have it (necessary to allow it to act as another Pokemon if the opponent switched out.) It also treated any Energy Cards attached to it as any type, and Transform was disabled if Ditto got statused. The nuances of the mechanic were likely too difficult to properly implement into the GB game, so we got GB Ditto and its Morph attack instead. Base Electrode's Pokemon Power, Buzzap, allowed you to Knock Out Electrode at any time during your turn (before attacking,) and then attach it to another Pokemon where it would then act as two of any one type of Energy of your choosing. Another weird edge case where they likely couldn't get it working quite right and just replaced with a GB-exclusive card that could do something in the spirit of the original (GB Electrode having Energy Spike which let you search a basic energy from your deck and attach it to one of your Pokemon for 3 Lightning energy.)
1:00 You can set this up and explode later with Golem. Magnemite is also a fair candidate, mixing energy is usually a bad idea but he only needs one to function. You can probably token Electabuzz by the same notion to stave off some Blastoise variants. The strategy is perfect against a stall deck because you can break through Chansey or Venusaur and knock out several Abra simultaneously. Exploding one mon twice, even thrice is made possible with defender. I tried Marowak for a short time but ended up with a Weezing build alongside Venusaur so I could abuse that trick with Pokemon center to keep him around a bit longer. Stacking 2 defenders means Weezing can not only jump the shark, but tank as much as 70 damage come your opponents turn. I suppose Poke flute could be used in place of wail
I didnt see anybody mentioning: in this game, you can control the outcome of the coin flip, so these attacks using coin are very powerful. Also, missed opportunity on ninetales of flipping 8 coins. You could flip 9 tails
That ditto card sounds like the perfect way to introduce a baby ditto into pokemon. One that can still transform but instead it's own version turns only into stage 1 or baby pokemon and cannot do evolved pokemon (due to how complicated they are for it). That and who doesn't want a baby ditto in their party?
Marowak can be used to take advantage of a mechanic in the gbc game. Normally, IRL, you’d have to mulligan and go down a card. Gbc game just allows you to draw hands until you have a basic. You can take advantage of this by running less basic mons than you normally would. You can even do just one of each for each evo line. This makes room for more copies of other good cards, but it’s harder to dig thru the deck for your basics and you’ll probably start the game with just one. Running 2-3 cubone and a ‘wak or two allows you to find your other basics much faster when using this strat. It’s a little convoluted, and still not a GREAT strat, but it is doable.
Tangle and jolteon were really good in the gb game. I made a turbo donk deck around jolteon since it can do a lot of damage with a double energy which eevee could use anyways. Tangela is more like a grass version of fossil magmar.
Moltres's effect could have actually worked without the randomnes. Instead of using randomnes the player could flip a coin 4 times and the attack could do 10 damage for every time you get heads. Thus the actual effect would remain the same. If they did the card could have been printed as well.
You left out the part where you had to mail-order the _Nintendo Power_ guide to get the Promo *Venusaur* card, 'cuz if you saw that guide on a store shelf, there was a 107% chance the promo was stolen outta there!
Marrowaks attack would be super useful if he's your last Pokemon on the field with none in your hand, and he's likely to be KOed during your opponents next turn. Using Wail would fill your bench and stop you from losing due to no Pokemon
Jigglypuff would have been possibly played to evolve into Do The Wave Wigglytuff, and the legendary birds are obviously good. It might be cool to check the sequel cards too?
The only three GB exclusive card that was ever printed were Meowth, Venusaur, and Dragonite. The latter remains Japan only. In order any of the GB exclusive cards to be a actual physical card, the attack and Pokémon power effect had to be change from anything at random to required coin flipping as example of the GB Meowth card.
I loved this game and its sequel. The birds are fun to use but too bad they're late game cards. I liked playing haymaker decks but I would always go back to Lickitung/Mewtwo/Chansey. I miss this game.
My Zapdos deck has yet to lose... 1 Zapdos is the only pokemon in the whole deck, set it up in a few turns and fire 70 power moves, getting a takedown almost every turn
They did my friend it was called pokemon trading card game 2 it was only released in Japan BUT you can get it on ebay on a actual cartridge and its all translated to English. Its awesome ! I play it on my Backlit GBA, it's alot harder than the 1st game in my opinion.
Marowak use: Setting up for Do the Wave Wigglytuff sweep. ...that's all I've got. And it's a huge waste of resources to do that, when you could just use Bills and Oaks to mill through, get WT set up and bench full in the time you got a Marowak evolved with 3 Fighting energy on it. BUT STILL. You didn't ask for a VIABLE use xD
Zapdos is so great if you have only one Pokemon, it does so much Damage cause it cant hit itselfe. Articuno is the best ballanced in Damage and Effects, but its pretty decent and Consistent. Moltres is pretty anoying and risky, but I love its Pokepower and you can use it to stall things out.
Just found your channel, am 11 months late, and love all of this; maybe the attacks that add Pokemon to the bench would help with a Wigglytuff Do the Wave attack strategy? I know that was decently competitive in the day
Hmmm if you have gust of wind and the oppenente pokemon are walling marrowak, you could use wail to force some basic pokemon on their bench, and then use gust of wind to being them out and then get easy ko's? That's the best I've got for a use for that move 😂
the random aspect of this is exploitable with the duel saving system! i used to relocate zapdos targets with my 4 gust of wind, i never thought of using poke flute!
1:08 Marowak's Wail+Wigglytuff's Do the Wave *Chefskiss* 1:51 Technically Base set's Geodude's Barrage is potentially the highest coin flips; flip a coin until tails. Mew was....best against bulky stalling decks purely for the statues lol Indeed all non gbc releases remove card pp & the book in Mr Ishihara's conveying the feature.
12:47, the GB sprite is based on Sugimori art of Meowth, have no idea why it was redrawn for the physical print
I think you meant 11:47, but you're right! It's Meowth's sprite from Red & Blue as well, not sure how I overlooked that one. That means they did have a reference for Meowth, but what I said about the sprite art being redrawn by Himeno is probably still true. Very interesting!
Love when People talk about this game. Wish there was more so we could've played through the eras
In a way TCG Online is the sucessor, just that it has no story
Did you know about the sequel? It’s Japanese only but there is an English translation!
Im actually currently playing the second game. Its has 2 islands and double the amount of cards
@@Zanderb20 Way more challenging too. Such a crime we never got it over here.

Love this channel. Most TCG focused channels just talk about competitive or the most recent expansions, but I like this more history-focused approach
Still can’t get over how amazing the soundtrack for this game is
I used GB Ditto in my Eevee deck
My only basic Pokémon in the deck were 4 Eevee and 4 Ditto, so Ditto always Morphed into another Eevee, allowing me to use more than 4 Eeveelutions in a single game

It does infact occur in the game in done in a very specific way, the game will play perfectly normal until you save the game and then turn it back on.
The GB bird cards also have spiritual successors in the 4th-generation Majestic Dawn set. I built a deck around them, mostly to mess with people.

Bruhhh is this a copy pasta😂. jk this game is dope I feel your enthusiasm
GB ditto may have use in stall decks to waste turns by eating up a little damage before turning into a Chansey or a Mr. Mime to eat more turns.
Lol I always thought the legendary bird cards were real. I learned a lot today about this game. It’s still a good one to play even today
My favorite Gameboy game. Such a great game and soundtrack
I hope you also do a video on the exclusive cards to Card GB 2!
I was soo bad at this game, but I loved it anyway. Oh man, I wish I could go back 25 years.
Can’t wait to see more on this game!
Literally been replaying this game lately then i see this lol
Super high quality videos mate
Please make a video about the stock photo backrounds on Pokémon tcg.
Marowak use Wail, Switch to a spread damager, take out multiple at once
That's about the only use I can think of...
Yo this channel is top teir pls keep it up!!
Tangle and jolteon were really good in the gb game. I made a turbo donk deck around jolteon since it can do a lot of damage with a double energy which eevee could use anyways. Tangela is more like a grass version of fossil magmar.
Also thanks for talking about this subject. I couldn't find any references about the game exclusive cards.
I remember using GB Flareon and GB Jolteon, because their energy requirements made them flexible.
A banger again man
Moltres's effect could have actually worked without the randomnes. Instead of using randomnes the player could flip a coin 4 times and the attack could do 10 damage for every time you get heads. Thus the actual effect would remain the same. If they did the card could have been printed as well.
I wonder what video editor this guys uses, everything is so smooth!
I have that Meowth promo since 20+ years... it came with Pokemon Blue !
Ditto actually combos well with the legendary GB Zapdos, as you can only get 2 legally in game. I run lots of scoop ups and Mr. Fuji as well
You left out the part where you had to mail-order the _Nintendo Power_ guide to get the Promo *Venusaur* card, 'cuz if you saw that guide on a store shelf, there was a 107% chance the promo was stolen outta there!
I'd love for you to make a video on the second TCG game, I think it would be pretty cool to see how it compares.
I always wished they made sequel to this. I loved this game. But I understand why they didn’t/ won’t.
I actually did use Friendship Song occasionally on a Do The Wave deck though.
I remember having a fairly abusive deck where you just have Zapdos 4x and then only energy cards (i think).
Ditto is MANDATORY if youre going to use an all Eeveelution deck, that gives you 8 total eevee instead of 4
Just found your channel, am 11 months late, and love all of this; maybe the attacks that add Pokemon to the bench would help with a Wigglytuff Do the Wave attack strategy? I know that was decently competitive in the day
After Watchthing this vid and the one you made after, I want to track down a copy of this game
Man this game had a killer soundtrack
every time I play this game I just end up playing a Dragonair hyperbeam deck and the AI cannot cope with it. anyone else know what I'm talking about?
Hmmm if you have gust of wind and the oppenente pokemon are walling marrowak, you could use wail to force some basic pokemon on their bench, and then use gust of wind to being them out and then get easy ko's? That's the best I've got for a use for that move 😂
the random aspect of this is exploitable with the duel saving system! i used to relocate zapdos targets with my 4 gust of wind, i never thought of using poke flute!
Love this channel please make more videos
@1:50 Exeggutor (Jungle 35)
I'm surprised you didnt' even mention Imakuni?, even to mention the card was indeed printed
1:08 Marowak's Wail+Wigglytuff's Do the Wave *Chefskiss*
1:51 Technically Base set's Geodude's Barrage is potentially the highest coin flips; flip a coin until tails.
Mew was....best against bulky stalling decks purely for the statues lol
Indeed all non gbc releases remove card pp & the book in Mr Ishihara's conveying the feature.
Gameboy, gbc, and advance games will be coming to switch THIS MOOOOONTH!!!!! HURRRR
