G'day Nev. I've been using the shooter's stance for a number of years now (I didn't know it was called that until watching your video!) but had a problem getting consistent grass and weight. I tried your method today for the first time of making the aiming point only 4-5metres in front of the mat rather than three quarters down the length of the green and it reaped dividends pretty much immediately! Both weight and grass had nigh on perfect consistency with each delivery. I will certainly be using your method now as it's so much easier to aim at a spot just in front rather than down the other end of the green. Thanks so much mate! 👍
Amazing Nev ... I've been playing 10 years since I retired from hockey and guess what ... this is exactly how I bowl. But I'd never analysed why it worked so well ... nor maybe even noticed that I did things that differently from everyone else. But you're right ... it really works. You feel solid on the mat and through the delivery.
roy stephenson Brilliant Roy. Thanks for the validation. Makes sense to have solid balance. Most sports have the same principle. From experience I have noticed that those that do it seem more natural at the game because they are not fighting the natural way of things.
Hi Nev,coming back to bowls after 20 yr absence, was a traditional stance but had my first roll up using shooter stance and the difference was notable straight away, thanks heaps
Awesome work Nev, trying to apply your principles to Crown Green Bowling over here in the UK, been fighting delivery problems for 20 years and Shooter Stance is hopefully the way forward, all the very best.
Hi Nev, I've been playing about 2 months and have struggled with getting "comfortable" with aiming down my line. Just tried this method in my front room aiming at the chair leg about 20 feet away. Hit it every time, balance felt really stable too. I will certainly be using this method from now on. Thanks very much. Rod
enjoying the series, this small adjustment made a better head position for me got my hip away and made for a cleaner back swing. I always enjoy your reviews and your enthusiasm for the game, keep em coming!
Loved the video. I've only been playing a year and am now using the shooter stance and finding it great for consistency. I played in our club's major singles (just for practice) last week and only lost by four (25-21), which I was very pleased about. Looking forward to more of your coaching points in the future. Di
Hi Nev Really enjoying the videos. My Son who is a good bowler (has played in WIBC Finals in UK) suggested I try the Shooter stance. That's not straightforward for me, as I'm right handed, but due to having a dodgy right arm (I can't straighten the arm fully, due to a childhood injury and can't hold a bowl flat) I am now 2 years into playing left handed. So the videos are a little bit more difficult to interprete for me. That said I'm making good progress, I've been in 4 x club championship semi finals this year and went from singles ladder division 4 to the top. My biggest issue is the dominance of my right leg and although the platform left leg is doing better, my right leg has a will of its own and often steps forward outside the line. I'm now going to practice 5 metres into the ditch with a mat in such a position as if I stand on it I know I've got it wrong. Basically practice, practice, practice
Hi Nev, brilliant clear and concise, l only wish your method could work for me. Being partially disabled and using a walking stick l am unable to do the shooter stance unless l want to end up face planting the mat lol. I have used part of your method using a specially adapted stick l have designed which gives me balance and your feet positioning follows on naturally. Thankyou it has certainly helped my game.
In fairness I did this stance before I saw this video, but it confirmed to me what I was seeking, being a new player to bowls starting in 2014, aged 75 years. Everything went well until October 2018 when I tore my inner ligament in my right knee. I have since realized that I was asking my right knee to bend at right angles to its natural intended bend. So all I can say is, be careful how you place your right foot. I have not been able to play bowls since. Healing of the ligament is very slow and I am not sure it will ever be strong enough to play bowls again.
Hi Nev, I'm a bit late to the party but I just wanted to thank you for this video. I tried the shooter stance when you first published this video but I gave up on it because it didn't work for me straight away. However I have recently decided to give it another go and stick with it, this time it's paid off really well and I'm hitting my line so well I only have to think about length now. I used to be a rifleman and an archer and always used this type of stance so I should have known it would work. Anyway thanks again Nev for the advice.
Thank you so much, your so clear and concise. I’m Looking forward to using your method at my next practice! So glad I found your and subscribed to your videos!
Build Your Skills Your system definitely works I won the Junior rinks champs yesterday - even with my Leader foot in a moon boot having badly twisted my ankle the week before. 😅 I’m utterly convinced!! 😁👍👏👏👏
Build Your Skills Thank you so much Nev. I’m a first season bowler and would really appreciate some tips and guidance on adjusting rhythm speed and length. I’m mostly either 2 metres over or short. On a good day I average about 30% good bowls within a metre of the jack. I would like to aim for 50% on my consistency ( or better)! Often in a game my skip asks me to do the same shot with less weight and I find my body goes into automatic and the next bowl ends up at the same spot as the first! Not good when you have spectators watching ha ha Also, if I drop my weight do I need to adjust my line? My husband says yes, I say no, please put some clarity on our ‘bowls banter’ any advice here would be appreciated, thanks.
Love it. Started using this a couple of months ago and at a recent tournament someone told me I bowled like a machine. Nice. Owe it to your video series. Would love a few more tips on controlling weight (distance).
Loving these Neville. I'm 24 and have been playing close to 9 years now, I think I'm a good player but want to become a great player. I've had some good results in the past like NZ open pairs final in 2012 but have struggled with consistency at times and am constantly trying to develop 'the perfect delivery' which I am sure you will understand is frustrating at times. I am looking to trying these out soon as I am one that struggles with balance :)
Jake Leslie Brilliant Jake. The trick with this stance is that it takes about 2 weeks to get used too. Be persistent and make sure your left foot is inline with your head when you step.
BUILD Thanks Nev. Maybe I can send over a video to you sometime and show you my progress. My main problem is I chuck my hip out causing my arm to loop sometimes. I remember all you Aussie guys coming over for the NZ in one of my first years of bowls but never returned. Mainly because the Henderson greens are so bad LOL. Does Bear still play? Top guy he is
Yer Bear is a legend. I was playing pairs with him that year :D I will be back soon Jake, I am moving to Wellington in 3 weeks... It takes a little time and effort to train your swing. Keep doing it, you will be rewarded!
Hi Nev, Absolute novice here! Tried the shooter stance - it is helping enormously. Question is.....I used a fixed stance (ie I don't step forward). How can I adapt the shooter stance for weight control, as you describe in this video, if I am NOT stepping forward?
Hi Christina, good question. Having the hip out of the way through moving you right foot inward (right handed, left if left handed) will still help. Outside of that, if you focus on you aiming line and practice getting rhythm through your swing you should be good to go.
@@NevRodda Thanks Nev - appreciate that you have taken the time to reply. Still working on the shooter stance, but I think it is starting to come together.
Is the shooter stance the same whether your a right or left hand bowler? Do you use the opposite if your left handed ie left foot for balance? Any teaching tips for left handed bowlers would be helpful when coaching left hand bowlers.thanks a lot! 😊
Hey Nev, Not sure if you are still producing any more videos but if so. Can we have shooter stand backhand from front and back views if possible? Cheers Gary
Thanks Nev, you say a lot, with not many words. Great work. Can you give us a lesson on finding the delivery line? I learnt to take a mark off the the bank and draw a line back and pic a mark about 5m out. The last 5 years l have drawn a line back from the jack in my minds eye and pic the 5m mark. This has worked well, however l feel like l'm just guessing most of the time. What's your view? Thanks mate.
On ya' Nev!..What a fluent action you have, good to see. You're a breath of fucking fresh air devoid of politics and bullshit. I hope to find a driving lesson. Good luck for the future & rock 'n roll Bowls 2 U!!!

I am new to bowls (2 months) why do other people say have as big a bowl as you can? I find it so uncomfortable. I am happy with a 00 but people think I should play with a 4. Why is that?
You’re first delivery was a foot fault. Followed up by a second delivery that was boarder line foot fault. I think the forward initial position on the mat is causing this. Move that position back 5cm should fix it. As a coach you should know this. As a umpire I would have a chat to you during a real match and warn you about foot faulting.

Hi how are you, is Drake Pride Profisianel bowls good to play with. I am a lead,
Hi Nev I just started bowling for afew months And my position is lead having trouble getting my line right drive is ok stance not
Hey brother, focus on getting the stance foot out of the way through turning it… then drawn a line back from the bank onto the green, then focus on getting the bowl over that spot without moving your head. Should help a lot.. 👍
How do you play a backhand shot using this stance?
👍🏼❤️
what about the backhand
Could you show this stance showing shots on the backhand just to see if there is any difference inboth hands
Good on forward, but tend to swing out on backhand?
Im left handed and want to know how to stand and deliver my bowls
The rudder of a boat is at the back, not the front!
I am new to bowls (2 months) why do other people say have as big a bowl as you can? I find it so uncomfortable. I am happy with a 00 but people think I should play with a 4. Why is that?
Love your coaching Nev but that first bowl you put down at 2.56 was a foot fault.
just an example - in a game you would stand further back on the mat to make sure its legal :)
Using this stance on the back hand causes narrow deliveries.
Foot is off the mat at point of delivery ?
All very good but what about your foot faulting.
That looks really far!
I couldn't do it.
Valid points Michael. However this is a tutorial and not a game of live lawn bowls. ❤️❤️
