It was part of the scheduling formula back then for last place teams. Philadelphia and Chicago each finished last in their divisions the previous year.

Funny how the Bears in 1983 gave little indication of what was to come: The all time NFL sack record in 1984 (still stands) and the legendary 1985 team.
Other than 1985, they weren't really that good. Not championship material like the 49ers, Giants, or Skins of that generation. They just happened to have 1 magical season.
@@danielboom72what are you talking about ? The bears won their division from 1984 to 1990 every year but 89. Many of those years going to the nfc championship game. "Not that good", huh?
@@judebarnes9209 if you actually read what I said instead of one little comment, you would clearly see that I said they weren't championship material. Teams like, the 49ers, Redskins, and Giants won/went to multiple super bowls. How many did the Bears go to? Sometimes winning your division just isn't enough son. They should have done better, but they didn't. Why? Because although, they were a good team, they weren't THAT good, not championship material. Like the 49ers, Redskins, and Giants of that era.
It's very odd how back then teams not in the same division would play twice in the same season like this for no apparent reason.

I think it's crazy that back then, sometimes it looked like the Bears wore black, not midnight blue......

Never had reliable QBs how many of those teams went to the superbowl with their backup quarterback
