For these base model cars, I would choose the Mini. I like its quirky interior and retro styling. That said, I wouldn't pay a penny over $25K (the cost of a lightly-optioned Miata). As for the Abarth and Cooper S, I prefer the Fiat. I think it's outlandish scorpion badges and go-faster stickers make it look more sporty than the Mini, and it'll certainly be more exclusive.
Kind of sexist of her to say "Is it an impulse buy for your girlfriend". Plenty of men drive 500s and this is not a ' girls' car. Also, suspension, etc can be played with and F500 will perform better then with stock set up. Another plus for F500 is that it is more reliable that Mini and if something goes wrong it is cheaper to fix (Mini charges premiums for their parts).
"You can tell when you see the giant speedometer and the toggle switches that MINI was trying just a little bit too hard..." Um... actually, it was designed with two people in mind as a rallying car. The passenger who needs to easily read the speedometer and flip the switches while the driver flies through the course. Know your car before bashing the chosen styling.
Theirs a Canadian dude showing you the Fiat Abarth driving in snow looked like it did very well. The Traction Control really kicks in nice and almost does the Range Rover thing except it only is front wheel drive.
I totally agree with the thing about the mini shifting nicely. Not sure if it has a heavy knob on it, but it has a much better feel than an e90 shifter.
I test drove both a 2012 of these cars. Base MINI auto and Fiat 500 sport auto. I chose the MINI. The MINI felt better for fast turns and I liked the power better. Turning radius of the Fiat was awesome. The Fiat felt more cramped than the MINI. Not horrible. Worst part was my right leg against the center console. MINI interior quality was better. Biggest thing was the power. For a daily comute in city/highway combined rush hour traffic the MINI is better.
As a "FIAT fan" (not really) I totally agree with you on interior, also it feels kinda small. If you wanted more powerful engine you should have tried 1.4 16v. Those are a good compromise between 1.2 8v & Abarth 1.4 turbo
I have driven both the fiat (which I own a sport version of) and a mini. The differences are rather obvious when you drive them. The mini is lower and the roof is closer to your head, but its wider, still there is a bit of claustrophobia going on compared to the Fiat which has a more open feel to it. The sacrifice is handling the higher center of gravity provides more body roll than the mini. I actually prefer the Fiats gear box, but the difference is minimal so its preferential at best.
I drive a 2002 nissan xterra. It's a midsized suv. High off the ground, 5000lb towing capacity, v6, 0-60 in about 12. I test drove a FIAT 500 pop and I LOVED everything about it except for the acceleration. And that's coming from someone who has been in a SUV their entire life. It's tall off the ground, absolutely plenty of headroom if you are a guy, or have a guy, good turning, and sexy as hell (coming from someone who says that a GMC topkick Ironhide edition is the sexiest vehicle ever.).
@supervegano I'll concede that cars like the 500 were originally designed to navigate the (comparatively) small roads of Europe. I've been in the Netherlands for more than two months, and definitely see the need for small cars (small roads, better fuel economy, etc). I also see that there are dozens of other options when it comes to similarly sized cars that can be had for significantly less money. I will say that these cars have aged well, and, had I the means, I'd pay extra for the "style"
I like both of them, but my preference is to the Mini. A couple of my neighbors have them and they are really great looking cars. These are more status vehicles than anything else and their reliability is not great. If you want a real commuter car with bulletproof reliability and amazing gas mileage, then you get a Honda Civic.
UNBELIEVABLE... i have a mini and that 69.0 mph slalom run is still absolutely insane. THOSE ARE PORSCHE SPEEDS!!!! it makes me wonder if there is any car under $40k that is faster than a mini through the slalom. if anyone knows of any car that is faster please let me know.
Dunno about MINI but Fiat's 1.2 8V FIRE engines are reliable and cheap to maintain. My mum has a Punto with same engine that gets abused regularly and it passed 125 000mile mark yesterday. Not a lot for those engines but it hasn't broke down so far so that's cool
I own a 2010 mini and is awesome and minis are British and wore bought by BMW (Germany), I love BMW they are the best cars and SUVs in the world followed by Mercedes and Buick, I used to own a 2006 BMW 3 series awd 325xi and it was like a dream car I love it, but I changed it for the mini because I wanted to try some thing else from BMW that had better fuel efficiency, mini is a cool car, btw just for the record I've seen more man than woman deriving minis. The feeling of BMW is unbelievably unique, you'll know when you own one $$$$$$, they are expensive, but I don't mind it, they are worth every penny. Mini is just that as soon as you enter one it feels like a BMW, the only thing It lacks is power compared to the BMW I had is a big difference, that might be the reason why I going back to a 2010 BMW perhaps even a 2010 Mercedes-Benz (328xi or c300) will find out later. The key for long lasting durability and performance of a great car especially great make cars is maintenance. Take care of them people. XD
The 500 belongs to different car segment , it is positioned to compete iQ, Picanto and i10 and actually purchased for city and suburban driving purpose not inter state; while the mini belongs to small family hatch,
Slalom Speeds: BMW M3 coupe = 67.7 mph BMW Mini Cooper = 69 mph This is one reason why small and light is often good and fun. I suppose if you only drive in straight lines and not in a city or town then these cars would seem pointless, and vice versa.
Neither of these cars are sensible; a VW Golf, let along a Suzuki Swift, will fill the role of small car perfectly making a Mini or Fiat a luxury purchase. With practicality taken care of it's really a case of what you want and I would say looks will play a more dominant role in determining that than on road ability.
I've personally driven both, and I'm quite fond of the Mini over the Fiat. The 500 just feels too small, however I'd take the 500 over a Smart Car any day of the week. The Mini just has a more "sporty" feel to it. That and the Mini is just a good looking car. The 500 just isn't that "stylish" to me. All in all the review is rock solid that's about how I felt about the cars when I drove them. I'd take a Cooper S though, pick one up used save a few grand and get a better car.
Aye they are city cars, but america with as spread out as it is, requires even city cars to pass, and avoid accidents at highway speeds, as such their ability to change direction at high speed, and their mid range power band, and their brakes are all important even though they are city cars. If this were for the euro versions of these cars I would say you are completely correct as some of them never see more than 40 or so MPH.
i dont get it, your highways are slower than here in europe and yet we manage fine with all these cars buzzing around, sure they make some noise at 80 but isnt that fast enough to overtake anything. why do everday cars in america have v6s and stuff it just inst needed
The mini is definitley better hands down, but i would have to say the fuel economy of the 500 would most likely be better. Beside's that, the brakes on the mini's tend to have problems after the warranty expires so for an average person i would say go for the fiat. If you can afford the maitnence and up front cost of the mini then go for it. Thats my .02cents
@supervegano These aren't cars that I would consider very "economical." There are lesser expensive cars, that also deliver better fuel economy. And that doesn't even include the used car market. These cars are about style 1st and foremost
Horrible comparison of the Fiat 500 to the mini. It's just a vague appearance match up. They should be comparing the Fiat to others in it's class like the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Mazda 2. The next comparison will be a Chevy Camaro vs a VW GTi. great work..
Why are so many comments in barely intelligible English? Many of the sentences make no sense, the writers contradict themselves, and often are factually incorrect! I know that some may not have English as their first language, but to be honest it would seem that 'some' is about 95% unless it is just the average American's inability to frame a sentence with any semblance of structure?
Fiat was too late to the game. Mini Cooper was a hot seller when it started out because small cars were a "new" thing at the time following 10+ years of giant SUVs and trucks when gas was 99 cents in the 1990s. Now with $3-4 gas sales are still up on large vehicles and people have a "from my cold dead hand" mentality about them. Fiat should build another spyder for the US market and make a better miata which is not easy to do; that niche is better to get.
the only reason i choose the fiat over the mini is because the fiat is cheaper when specked out and the abarth version just cam out and it look like an evil little Lamborghini baby
"it doesn't have much low end but it pulls hard" .... not really the way i'd describe something doing 0-60 in 8.9 and the quarter mile in 16.6sec ... zzzzzz. with real-world expectations (not for the power snobs out there) i'd say something more like: "adequate power but far from being quick"
@ElliottHawkins1 no sir.. where i am from.. i see more guys driving coopers.. and i havnt seen much fiats.. the fiats i have seen driven (atleast 5 for now) have been old guys
@EASiedlecki Sorry you feel like that. There is nothing new from these reviews. Show 0-60, show 60-0. Show windy road clip. . . . And it does't matter what type of car. Room for originality here.
Hello? City Car! These cars are built for the urban environment. Why are you testing them on the "Track" and in the canyons? Seriously please retest and provide a useful comparison. Parking, Turn radius, ingress/egress, City fuel economy, ride quality on city roads. Come on, Stop being trying to be Motortrend and think differently.
it's really an interresting comparison but it seems the woman was very DEAD at delivering the words, a little beat on her voice would be a much welcome or unless this comparo was really meant to be delivered on monotone voice... nevertheless it's a nice review...
I'm a 21 year old and far from the best driver... I mean I'm an enthusiast but shouldn't I be slower than test drivers from auto mags/sites? definitely got an 0-60 time faster than these guys in my friends new base mini. =/ Meh I think I'll stick to motortrend for test data.
Who tf buys a car so small thinking in speeding up? If you want something fast there are a lot of sport cars available Mustang, Genesis Coupe Camarillo, Challenger etc. but a car 🚗 that looks like a little toy is obviously to save money, gas and park everywhere possible.
@QusaiSN14 their both two different things.small cars with big engine= the best. ford raptor is a joke,its just made for people so they think they have a hardcore off roader.the frame sucks on it
10.4 s 0-60 is not bad...Mini wins easily. Fiat didn't do enough and it shows...a cartoon clown car. Someone needs to show her the back seat and loosen up!
@FrencunoZeTroll Agreed. I think its re-freshing that a female is doing a car review. This is a male dominated segment or industry. Whether or not the reviewer is good or not shouldn't depend on the sex but the presenter. There are just as bad male presenters out there. There are some cool female presenters on roadfly.com.
I really dont know which one is the worst . Lets see ! We all know that Mini's are not real Mini's made by Austin or Morris they are made by BMW so for me they are not Mini's . Then there are teething pains with the Mini . Long , bad , off and no again type of pains at that . That being said . The only 2 years when Mini's was good if you call it that and that was 2006 and 2007 . Before that time the Mini's was bad I mean really bad but not as bad the ones after 2007 . Now for the Fiat 500 . Well what can I say about this one .Not as cool looking or drive as well as the Mini but it is made in the USA by Chrysler and is backed by Chrysler that being said remember the Crossfire that looked cool for the time but after Chrysler dropped Mercedes . Try getting that car fixed at the dealer ! They wont touch it with a ten ft pole . Take it to Mercedes maybe they will but your going to pay for it . I almost feel that the 500 is heading down that line . But maybe not because Chrysler owns Fiat and owned Fiat for a long time now . Ever sense 1986 I believe but never bought there product into the USA . The New Dart was the first from Fiat and once that was set in place Chrysler introduced the 500 a year or two latter . Yes the Fiat 500 is a girly car and the cooper as more boy car . Will the fiat 500 last as long as the cooper? yes . So lets take both cars of the same years to this date . Will the cooper last 100,000 miles with out any fixes other that tune ups , one brake pad change and tires . NO . Now will the Fiat 500 will met or surpass that it should and most likely . But both of these car will not meet the standards of Asian cars . But like everything else that is Asian owned and most of those companies have plants here in the USA just like Fiat and this includes the big three from japan . I only know one car made in Japan and that is the Honda CRZ . Most likely the best and only car imported from Japan to the USA . But that car ended after 6 years .
This is a car comparison video from InsideLine and y'all are worried about the presenter's looks? If it was a guy you'd not say anything. That is to say, you think a male presenter would be nicer to look at than this woman. It follows, then, that y'all are homosexuals? If you disagree, shut up and watch the video.
1.2 8V FIRE engines are known to go pass the half milion km mark, 100 000 miles is nothing. My mums Punto with older version of FIRE engine has 202000km, that's around 125 000miles. It never broke and it gets abused regularly
For these base model cars, I would choose the Mini. I like its quirky interior and retro styling. That said, I wouldn't pay a penny over $25K (the cost of a lightly-optioned Miata). "mini was trying too hard" its called heritage. for someone who has owned a 1973, and a 2005 they did a great job.
"You can tell when you see the giant speedometer and the toggle switches that MINI was trying just a little bit too hard..."
Um... actually, it was designed with two people in mind as a rallying car. The passenger who needs to easily read the speedometer and flip the switches while the driver flies through the course. Know your car before bashing the chosen styling.

This girl has no idea of cars. 0-60 in 10 secons is LACK of power???? WTF
It really is...
for a sportscar yes, but it is a supermini
Am I the only one who thinks the little chrome bumper accent makes the fiat llok like it has a cute little mustache? :3
So on the highway do you have to have the pedal almost a the way down for the fiat? Since the speed limmit is 70?
UNBELIEVABLE... i have a mini and that 69.0 mph slalom run is still absolutely insane. THOSE ARE PORSCHE SPEEDS!!!! it makes me wonder if there is any car under $40k that is faster than a mini through the slalom. if anyone knows of any car that is faster please let me know.
any chance of the Abarth coming to the US?
Im wondering after the 3 yr 36K miles.. Which one will cost more to keep on the road?

Wore bought? Are British? this whole thing is both ungrammatical and.. well, nonsense. Is English your first language?
The 500 belongs to different car segment , it is positioned to compete iQ, Picanto and i10 and actually purchased for city and suburban driving purpose not inter state; while the mini belongs to small family hatch,
I think she looks fine, and exudes elegance. I don't know what others are complaining about
Slalom Speeds:

Very nice detailed comparison.
Nice presentation. Thank you!
Strong, useful, "bullet" statements for each car.
two car basically good cars for the European market, with crowded old cities and the huge cost of gas.

the sl65 amg black series with brabus tuning would smoke these two. NO contest
@allisinthepass how else do you pronounce it?
@robjla1 so she works for inside line, you don't, there.....
i dont get it, your highways are slower than here in europe and yet we manage fine with all these cars buzzing around, sure they make some noise at 80 but isnt that fast enough to overtake anything. why do everday cars in america have v6s and stuff it just inst needed
Nice video, I'd prefer the Mini too.
the cars have inbuilt kitchen?
I was looking at her eyebrows the whole time... LOL
@FrencunoZeTroll Thank you. You're absolutely right
....... what is that test driving the cars?
FIAT 500 ONLY
The mini is definitley better hands down, but i would have to say the fuel economy of the 500 would most likely be better. @FrencunoZeTroll DOES ANYONE ELSE FIND IT IRONIC THAT THE GUY WITH "TROLL" IN HIS NAME IS ACTUALLY DEFENDING THE PERSON WHO MADE THIS VIDEO?
@mluu510 she should be working for consumer reports!

Probably a lot of Italians with bad English

I like the Fiat 500 despite its draw backs
Fiat is a nice little car...mini cool too. I bought the Fiat!
@clash189 no its not its a fashion car like the mini
Come on guys give her a break, I think she is new and kinda shy, she'll get better at this.
@FrencunoZeTroll Agreed.
@TheVtieg6
yeah but theres not many italians in mexica so its mexican.
"it doesn't have much low end but it pulls hard" .... not really the way i'd describe something doing 0-60 in 8.9 and the quarter mile in 16.6sec ... zzzzzz. with real-world expectations (not for the power snobs out there) i'd say something more like: "adequate power but far from being quick"

what about the smart for 2 car? lol ill take the mini

@allisinthepass SHE WORKS FOR INSIDE LINE, YOU DON'T, ENOUGH SAID, DON'T LIKE HOW SHE SAYS IT, THEN DON'T LOOK AT THE VIDEO AGAIN
Jeez, calm down people. Theres going to be trolls no matter WHATS posted.
I'm a 21 year old and far from the best driver... I mean I'm an enthusiast but shouldn't I be slower than test drivers from auto mags/sites? definitely got an 0-60 time faster than these guys in my friends new base mini. =/ Meh I think I'll stick to motortrend for test data.
id buy the 500 and its super cute!
@TheTrejo93 please get behind the wheel of a mini cooper s,or a fiat 500 abarth,and then say they are useless
im waiting for the abarth
Who tf buys a car so small thinking in speeding up? If you want something fast there are a lot of sport cars available Mustang, Genesis Coupe Camarillo, Challenger etc. but a car 🚗 that looks like a little toy is obviously to save money, gas and park everywhere possible.
Guys fix your audio mixing, the music is way too loud when she's talking.
harsh reviews, I thought it was good
@FrencunoZeTroll lol, tell them
fiat looks good but underpowerd even the Abarth version
combined total 176hp....
@QusaiSN14 their both two different things.small cars with big engine= the best. ford raptor is a joke,its just made for people so they think they have a hardcore off roader.the frame sucks on it
@FrencunoZeTroll amen!
@FrencunoZeTroll amen to that
i though fiat gonna do a back wheelie :D
10.4 s 0-60 is not bad...Mini wins easily. Fiat didn't do enough and it shows...a cartoon clown car. Someone needs to show her the back seat and loosen up!
fiat vs mini !!!! crazy shit Comparison
if they had to hire a robot, they could've at least hired someone good looking...
@recommendme ha well there aimed at the womens market except the cooper s and jhon works
what is up with the graphics on the Mini? they look so stupid!
Not such a bad review. I've seen other (males) do much worse.
I like the fiat than mini.
"impulse buy for your girlfriend." As many men drive a MINI as women.
ill take a 500, can't stand minis for some reason
@ottodob same thing i said
sick go 500
poor girl was sleeping in the 500

But like everything else that is Asian owned and most of those companies have plants here in the USA just like Fiat and this includes the big three from japan . I only know one car made in Japan and that is the Honda CRZ . Most likely the best and only car imported from Japan to the USA . But that car ended after 6 years .
Fiat owns Chrysler, not the other way around
This is a car comparison video from InsideLine and y'all are worried about the presenter's looks? If it was a guy you'd not say anything. That is to say, you think a male presenter would be nicer to look at than this woman. It follows, then, that y'all are homosexuals? If you disagree, shut up and watch the video.
thats a really really wierd looking kitchen O.o
The mini is good at bombing down dirt roads
Well we will see if it makes it to 100,000 miles.
1.2 8V FIRE engines are known to go pass the half milion km mark, 100 000 miles is nothing. My mums Punto with older version of FIRE engine has 202000km, that's around 125 000miles. It never broke and it gets abused regularly
@ElliottHawkins1 yes.. i wish people knew that haha
500 !!!!!!
I wouldnt trust either of these cars for reliability. Meh.
Also, I'd rather have something with some brawn. These cars seem flaccid.
