  • Happy Saturday guys, hope the weekend is treating you all well. This week’s video focuses on some of the bizarre “editions” from Ford during the ‘80s. Without giving anything away, we have some odd entries this week, be sure to watch the whole video to possibly learn something new! If this is your first time watching, welcome. Hopefully, you like what you see. If not, be sure to come back in a few months as my production quality/research is only getting better as time goes on. I will see you all next week. GO PACK GO!

Love your videos. Everybody called those windows bubble portholes, they were popular with custom vans which were huge when Ford designed the cruisin’ models. I was 8 in 80. When I was a kid we called it a “poison pinto” because there was a hot wheels car of it by that name. The aerobird was HUGE! Everybody wanted one! The Tbird went from a grandpa car to a car young people wanted overnight! I had an 88 Topaz. The Tempo/Topaz were tough affordable little cars that got the job done. You don’t see any because they got used up! Most of them hit the junkyard with well over 100k on the clock in the 00’s!

Fun memories with the Hot Wheels "Poison Pinto". I remember it was green with a skull and crossbones. We had a 1975 Pinto wagon. It was a good little car, my dad worked so hard and was so honest.

The Fila Thunderbird was an expensive letdown. I remembered this car when it came out. You were right that no turbo option was a letdown, but I don’t recall anyone my age or older actually wanting one of these, nor would I be jealous of anyone having one because of the Fila package. Frankly, Fila as a brand would later get some currency in the Rap world later in the decade, so the Fila package in addition to almost being pointless was ill-timed.

I miss my 92 Ford Explorer with the Eddie Bauer package. Came with 2 sets of canvas and leather luggage. It was a great truck! Fila was an extremely expensive Italian brand that specialized in hand made tennis wear. A shirt cost around $250. Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe wore Fila.

I really enjoyed this video. I an 48 and grew up with these cars and I turned 16 in 1991 and remember looking at the Auto Trader and seeing all these cars for sale. You could still buy a good car under $1K I had many. And yes the Tempo was "all that trash". They just didn't last in Phoenix! 80K miles would be high mileage on your average Tempo/Sable. Our Sable LX was loaded to the hilt leather and everything. Babied but the transmission was slipping at 80K miles. The Chevy 80's S-10 was a workhorse too. Man I'm glad I have those memories.

Remember you thought it had 80,000 on it but 5 digit odometer and the last number was the 1/8th of a mile readout...thats why so many people today are confused with old cars...You cant tell the actual mileage...As after 99,999.9 they went to 00,000.0 Never went to 100,000 mile readout,I think the later 1990's version did but not the 80's and older cars.
I had a 85 Dodge Daytona Turbo car was mint in/out truly like new,ran like new but it had 142,000 miles.I bought it cheap off the original owner and drove it another 100,000 miles in 3 years(lots of hwy I did)..Car still looked like new,ran perfect I sold it and 6 months later it was at a local used car dealer advertised with 48,000 original miles...So,some guy probably bought it and with 242,000 miles I bet things started to go and he probably told everyone those cars are junk..I know as I worked as a mechanic from 1992-on..I explained to many people that what is on the odometer doesnt mean its the real mileage, people dont understand!

That line made me smile "i dont think they're all that trash" lol
Do u mean Tempo/Topaz cause the Mercury Sable is an entirely different machine than the Tempo/Topaz and I had great luck with my 89 Tempo (well up until about 130k miles) but how much more could I have expected out of it. Maybe I just got lucky but I dont think most of them were all that trash after 80kmiles but that's just my opinion, and sometimes my opinion _can_ be described as All that Trash so what do I know😆

@@averyparticularsetofskills yes, the taurus/Sable were totally different. And I didn't mean that the topaz/tempo was trash after 80K. But in Phoenix at 80K so many times your car was having cooling/A/C issues. I guess I got carried away, lol. Great comment!

Keep the rest. The All Wheel Drive Tempo was a big deal that just didn’t catch on. Tempo was reliable and there were plenty of these on the road. A car like that today would sell in big numbers. There’s an established market for them even at a 28k price point. Thank you for this video !

Idk why I find the history of 80’s and 90’s cars so interesting. It seems like cars back then had more special editions and cool options. Now in 2024 it seems like every car is a crossover and you can get only a few colors. White, black, silver, or gray.

So, you want a rarity to look into? An option so rare most in the car world have never heard of it even though it was on the early Fox Body Mustangs? An option it took me years to find. The inside door handle that's normally at the top of the door was offered as an option to be at the bottom of the door, by the sill plate. I'm a Fox Mustang aficionado and am building my first Mustang I bought 30 years ago that's been sitting in my barn by putting a T Top roof on it, full black interior and the bottom door handles in a 1980 coupe. I've had many over the years, but never got rid of my first.

In 1985, my father bought a Mercury Cougar off of the showroom floor. Right next to it was a Lincoln Mark VII LSC convertible. It was stunningly beautiful. It wasn't just a landau roof as the top was down.
I've never seen one since and I'm not sure if it was an official model or something ASC put together.

When this Thunderbird special edition came out FILA was getting popular with the new and bursting hip hop scene. FILA was a hardcore tennis/country club brand and really didn't market themselves to this new clientele very well. So instead of the FILA edition being sold to urban populations Ford kept trying to capture that country club market that had already realized that they didn't want to look like a "gangster rapper..."

I had a Pinto station wagon in high school. It was the regular edition and it didn't have the cool portholes. I had a lot of fun in that Pinto so I have nothing bad to say about it. It was basic transportation and it did its job. I remember when Fila was regarded as an upscale Yuppie brand like Izod. I'm sure that was the market Ford was aiming for with this special edition. I really liked the aero styling of the Thunderbird during the mid to late 80s onwards.

I had an 81 AMC Eagle 4WD wagon when I was like 14 or 15, we have a family farm out in the sticks in SE OH, it allowed me to get to various fishing/camping spots without having to take one of the horses out. My mom drove an 88 Tempo LX in the early 90s, I remember being aware of its shittiness even as like a 5-year-old, haha! It blew up with under 100,000 miles, 80-something as I recall, got hot and popped a head gasket. Her '83 Escort, on the other hand, got my older cousin through high school and college in the late '90s/early '00s with virtually no maintenance. Those cars are what changed my old man from a Ford to a GM guy in the '90s, the Escort (indestructible, but about as refined as a tractor) and the Tempo (utter garbage) put a bad taste in his mouth.

In 1989 i I bought a new 89 Ford Escort ES. It was around $7500 new. It was basically a Escort Pony with a ground effects package including a rear spoiler and manual glass sunroof. Mine was red with gray cloth interior and automatic transmission and the standard 1.9 4 cylinder. To look at it, it looked close to being a Escort GT. I remember it was done by a company called Trimline of St Louis. I only seen 1 other like it in White around our area where we lived. I sold it in 94 and haven't seen it since. Don't know if anyone else remembers seeing these cars. It was a dealer option package.

Keep up the learning and work on the videos. You did research. I did notice when you mentioned that Anniversary Ford Thunderbird, you had the late 70's Lincoln Mark V on the screen. I did like how you showed the Thunderbird generation of the late 1970's the early 1980's and then the "aero bird " showing the differences. Good job there. You really had to research to get that footage to explain what you were sharing. This was indeed an effort. Thank you again.

The explosion thing on the pinto was overblown ( no pun intended). There were alot of vehicles that could burst into flames under certain conditions. Very reliable my family had 2. The 73 was our 1st car with a/c and cassette stereo.

I'd love to find an old Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and swap in a late model 2.3 Ecoboost from the Mustang or Ranger. With a tune you could double the horsepower and keep the weight balance. I had an 87 T-bird LX with the 5.0 EFI V8. It was very comfortable and would boil the back tires (or tire, anyway) from a stoplight, but was pretty slow overall. It did get 30 MPG on the highway if you kept it under 70 which was impressive. It had the auto headlights, auto-high beams, corner lamps, digital gauge cluster and MPG display which was pretty advanced for an 80s car. I later had a 90 T-bird SC which was a totally different experience. Much faster and much better handling (although the LX was never intended to be a sporty model) and far better brakes. It was hard to work on and the head gaskets didn't like to stick around too long, but it was a fun car and got a lot of attention. It would approach 150 on the turnpike back when there was very little traffic on it (between Orlando and Miami in Florida).

    • @autochatter
      @autochatter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

The Quest and Villager were similar, but I wouldn't call the Mercury version a rebadged Nissan persay. The platform and drivetrain on both was Nissan, but they were built at a Ford plant and alot of the interior and switch gear was Ford too. They were genuinely joint collaborations as opposed to a rebadge.

I personally like the 8th and 9th generation thunderbird. The 8th boxy bird looks bigger but it's also on the fox platform and roughly the same size as the 83 tbird. I was 11 in 80 and remember well seeing this stuff all over the place. Dad's buddy had a pinto cruising wagon in the grey, yellow, purple color scheme. I love all the variety available with this different tape stripe versions

We had gone to a junkyard and found a pinto and took the panels off a pinto and then we out a 302 v8 in it with side pipes and some crager ss rims on it. Really miss that car

I was born in 1975 i remember all those cars seeing them every where lol. I remember seeing the Ford Pintos driving around & i called them bombs on wheels 😂😂 the gas tank was right behind the rear bumper so if you got rear ended hard enough u blew up 😂😂 Ford ended up putting some kind of plate or something so people would stop blowing up like a popcorn maker 🤣🤣🤣

I like hearing a young car nut's reaction to such common (and pedestrian) vehicles my generation grew uo with! I was a big fan of GM back then but also likes Chrysler, Ford was ehhh.
Problem was that i was raised with tailfins & chrome trim as a kid so thought that was a cooler era.
But the Ford effort to aero style with the 80s was a real boon to styling. It has been a fun ride all the way to now!🎉

Was the Tempo really considered an econobox in the 80s? It was definitely an upgrade over the Escort. But I guess it could be for someone who couldn't afford the Taurus. I just remember seeing them owned a lot in my middle class neighborhood when I was a paperboy in the mid-80s.
