My father was a practicetioner of this martial arts. When i was a kid my father was attaked by 4 men arm with knife, my father survive but he got some slashed in his arms.
Awesome! I think i was in my first year in High School when this martial art was taught in our Physical Education class. I hope they keep it as part of the curriculum till today.
Is teaching in the high school??? In catalonia (spain) we learn "ball de bastons" (stick dance) nowadays just a kid dance... (and...my first broken finger) I just hope if we learn it from Filipinas 500 years ago... A big hug from the other part of the world.
I learned some Arnis too in my first year high school in Manila (2000) and today I’m teaching some of it to my daughter who’s now 13. We live in Norway and she can’t learn it here. It would be nice if she learns some Filipino martial arts and pass it on to the next generation, thus I’m teaching it to her.
Is anyone lobbying for BT to be a recipient of the The National Artist Award? Let’s be honest, Arnis was almost dying. Many of the young Filipinos don’t know this art of fighting. It’s only making a come back in social media and that just so inspiring. His contribution and effort to make this global against the culture of new generation playing games on cellphones and computers is a huge feat! Really, I thought our Filipino form of martial art is about to be erased in history and now I see a huge following (even from foreigners), videos upon videos, gyms popping up and mainstream media using the art on fight scenes. Just wow! The National Artist Award is the highest distinction bestowed upon Filipino Artists whose body of work is recognized by their peers and more importantly by their countrymen as sublime expression of Philippine music, dance, theatre, visual arts, literature, film and media, arts, architecture and design.
I witnessed an old man school a young man in Olongapo in the early 80's. He was taking it easy until the young guy got too aggressive, then he beat him down like Neal Pert of Rush on a drum solo. They have a big following of this in Charlotte, NC. I thought they called it "Kali" though.
Difference of MMA and FMA. MMA was designed mainly to knock, incapacitate or make him surrender in a fight. FMA was created long ago mainly for killing the intruders that invade our country in other words is an killing art for war. many do not accept the fact that it is the true nature of FMA that is why most of them switch to MMA because its more realistic or it concentrate on 1-1 sparring. im not bashing mma for it is a good self defense but the difference is in our country. here you can be killed just because they are envious of you or you're a member of the opposing group. here when there is a "fight" that means someone will "die".
mark anthony andales I trained in arnis and doce pares and am very aware of it's lethality and purpose I would never trade it for mma I believe it's more realistic and practical in self defense situations.
True specially the old rural styles from the mountains, I trained in Panag-Didjang from my WW2 vet grandfather, a single opening and you are dead, we used to play and spar near the bamboo overgrowths and woodlands not to mention in knee deep mud whene we wre kids, training us to use the terrain to bottleneck the movement of the opponent was vital, this saved my life a lot of time and I can't see myself trading them for any other.
I just bought some it's more weapons training for me. The thing is you have people who are trained to fight and you have people who are not. If you just have 1 opponent who is using sticks all you need to do is get close and nullify his striking capabilities. Then you can grapple and either throw him or do a takedown. This is all if there is no knives and it is just 1vs1. grappling and being good at it take quite some time, most people do not know the 1st thing of grappling, but subduing a non is easy depending on your skill level. The stick fighting is cool but once you do that you have to remember to strike, do combos and maintain distance.
@@11bsavage64 The sticks are a replacement for actual weapons. What type of fight are you talking about? Because if someone really tries to get you and use Kali, he will stab or slash you with something that has a sharp blade. Moreover, have fun trying to close distance against someone who is proficient in Kali. He has the range advantage, before you even think about getting into close range you will get welcomed by 10 stick hits a second. Sticks hurt like hell and depending on how hard the person can strike it can also crack your bones. Your imagination of how the fight would go is too much theory that i saw not working in real life. Empty Hand Kali is definetely inferior to modern combat sports such as MMA, BJJ or Muay Thai. Any of those would absolutely murder empty hand Kali. You should compare Kali to other weapon arts such as Fencing, Hema, Gatka, Kenjutsu, Kendo and so on. Because Kali is primarily a weapon art.
Pain separates those who study the art for the wrong reasons (to look cool or to use it for bullying) from those who want to dedicate themselves to the art and continue the legacy.
sometimes its sad to realize that most of the filipino youth now is more involved in foreign art bjj taekwondo etc. nothing wrong about it though but i hope they would be the 1st believer of this art our freedom fighters used.
Well just be assured I'm a 17 year old filipino-american and Arnis has always peaked my interest, despite others my age being more indulged in whatever clothes are in season.
One way to make it more popular is to make it mainstream in media... like in gma, a2z and other channels. Also a bit of fixing in the official competition's rules (since to normal viewers it just looked like two people wacking each other like a kid)
You can't be a cry-baby when training Arnis/Kali, because that really hurt. My friend who is a small woman almost lost her wrist while training Arnis. She had 2 surgeries, but since she was determined to learn, she went for it. Now she is an Arnis instructor at a school.
Good lord! The way those 2 masters blocking those attacks gave me goosebumps. And the grandmaster can teach attacks without even glancing at the last hit. Damn
Why not pass somtyms in panay island when u visit again Phils..the hiligaynons has also it's varation of IFMA..am sure ul find it interesting..the art is called "abre mano"..students are trained using short stick and dagger effectively..no unnecessary movements..fast and accurate.
When I was little, my dad used to say that his side of the family knew Filipino Kung Fu and now I can see why. Being raised American, the kids in my fam took for granted how awsome those stories were. I'd love to learn to carry on the tradition.
very nice guys I studied under GM Angel Cabales I was at his last seminar held at Gene Tibon Goju ryu dojo. Sensei Tibon brother Darren was Angel Cabalas best student and the one that the system got handed down to.
GM candles was a warrior and a gentleman..I met him in November 1989 while I was in the California conservation Corp on American st. in Stockton. when I went there I was looking for a stocky man in his 40s or 50s but to my surprise I saw who I thought was someone's grandfather who came to pick up his grandson but when he took that short stick and moved with blinding speed my jaw hit the ground. we spoke for 15 to 20 minutes and he invited me to stay and watch . I got transferred shortly after to San Bernardino and never had the opportunity to train under him but I will always treasure meeting him.
Great fighting thrue arnis.san po lugar sir.? Gusto ko po mag training if its possible para po magkaron lang konting knowlege and self defense na rin po? Thanks
hope you can visit the city of Butuan in mindanao ,many student want to know our martial arts and me also. please do reply after this INCOV. I want to train po sana maka dalaw kayo dito sa Butuan pagka tapos nitong sakuna salamat po
wow I didn't know that there's a one system that uses close range in arnis it's like wing chun..different masters have different styles and techniques very interesting
I have witnessed an arnis tournament in the Philippines, here in Laguna. It’s funny because the techniques goes out the window, they were hitting each other as fast as they can. Very impressive though.
Yeah.. armor is such a huge dactor in that situation...but PEKAF can't really get rid of it or modify it that much for the sake of protection (especially in lower divisions, but I'd love it in the upper division to have lesser armor)
In Manila I would just walk down to Luneta Park at the weekend - there are great teachers doing classes in parts of the park. Very friendly to outsiders. GM Rodel Dagooc has a class and his Smoking Sticks dojo is open in his hometown not far away. Also travel to Cebu City for great teachers - go to Nick Elizar classes at Word Nickelstick dojo. Lots of options. Enjoy!
I start learning arnis 2 weeks ago cause my dad is master arnis for so long with my dads siblings i is saw in this video they use small sticks. mine is using large lol
Pain is my prison. My grandfather taught me the old way on how to use the Karambit. I don't recommend the old way because there's a lot of shouting, insulting, bloodshed, and brutal. Every time I get cut and you say " ahh.. Ssss", my grandfather would say "do it harder! Forget the pain! Again!".
Gained a lot of respect for this art as well as Filipino culture in general after this. Thank you.
"I will teach you that, but are you ready to accept the pain?" -Best part of the vid

Haha
Bright observation kabayan
Hahaha very funny

Yup we use it for the "CHOPS"
This is the 3rd martial art I will add to my list. I will train in the Philippines one day soon.
Mark Harris what are the other two?
I intend to do the same.
My father was a practicetioner of this martial arts. When i was a kid my father was attaked by 4 men arm with knife, my father survive but he got some slashed in his arms.
Mark Harris you really should
Kimson Nguyen he died before he could respond.

That's why you don't mess with old men in the Philippines. You just never know who is going to be on the other side of that bent, old body frame. :-)
Rick Schwartz im from the philippines and I guarantee you that arnis practicioners are very rare. Bobo mo putang ina ka
*Jonathan Joestar,* regardless. They're curse words.
Rick Schwartz or old white dudes in America! You never know who is gonna be behind that shot gun🤣
