Another note - do not store the barrel in the sun or a very warm place. Beans still have a tiny amount of moisture inside their center, just like corn, wheat and other whole foods do. When warmed up, the moisture is released and then captured inside the barrel. This would allow the beans to begin to rot and mold. So keep in a cool place - away from wood stoves, water heaters, windows where summer sun can come in. It is easy to place these barrels in a deep closet or another cool area.

To purchase beans in bulk, you can order through Azure Standard, but that is pricey. I do order through them for items I can't get locally or in my 3 hour drive to the nearest large town that has a restaurant supply store. Restaurant supply stores are open to the public and I prefer them over Costco - Costco has far too much 'eye candy' and it is easy to spend money on clothes, books, household items and other things when your money needs to go towards stocking up. You also cannot get as much of a variety in Costco and their packaging is less than a restaurant supply store. You can go in or call the restaurant supply store and order what you need. I recently called and ordered 500 lbs of split peas (was about $350 total) and they called when the peas were in so I could go pick them up... I've done the same for flour, sugar, TP in huge huge cartons, etc. That way I know they have enough on hand to make my 6 hour roundtrip worthwhile. Generally the store only keeps 2-6 bags on hand, I need much more than that.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video - this is really easy to do, and holds a large amount of food source. I hope you give it a try, you can also do the same with a 5 gallon bucket too :)

U need to start to use them if you already store them for 3 years or the beans will start to absorb plastic chemicals slowly in your food. I tried with water canisters labelled as food grade but in reality someone are not, they smell and leech plastic into the content. I tried 7 year rice in a sealed plastic bag, it was still ok but it tastes like plastic too, not good.
The best if u use these plastic barrels, even if they food grade , would be to every 2/3 years to eat and rotate the content and start to fill a new one !:) there is also the option to use galvanized metal, it does not require rotation and it is cooler and definitely sturdier than plastic, also it doesn't leech anything bad to your dry food.
Ofc they are more heavy and expensive but they last a life time and guarantee fresher food inside. They complete dark to light too. I never tried them but it might be a better idea to store big quantity of dry food for a long time (3+years) in one place, but anyway your barrel even if it's made of used plastic is a nice idea indeed! :).

Considering the bag of sealed rice I've eaten it was air sealed for 7/9 years don't remember, we need to consider that storing rice or beans in a canister full of air is not the same as one without oxygen in it. Air degrade faster the food Inside. So maybe divide the quantity in more canisters I think would be better so you can keep the other closed while using just one at time, and put some oxygen absorbers maybe

Where did you say you can buy these types barrels?

I buy them from feed stores - but you can also find them on craigslist and probably FB marketplace.
Just make sure they are food grade. The last 8 barrels I bought have a paper label now that says "Food Grade" and the feed store won't sell them without that label.
We use them for us, but also for feed for our livestock too.

You can buy it at Home Depot in small 3-5 lb bags, it's more expensive that way but it's food grade. I buy mine at Tractor Supply in 25 lb bags, much less expensive. Check and make sure the bag at TS gives direction for ingesting it (some people do eat it for the minerals, others think it is a dewormer, it isn't - once DE becomes moist or wet it becomes soft, so no way it can be used internally for worms in people or humans).
