Thank you so much for your tutorial. It’s been so informative and helpful even 6 years after you posted it. Bravo 👏 At 53:10 you were manually aligning all different stems to the reference kick region stem. In case anyone’s wondering what’s the workaround for that: To align multiple regions to the beginning of a reference region in Logic Pro, follow these steps: 1. Select the Reference Region: Identify the region you want all others to align with. 2. Move Playhead to Start: Place the playhead at the beginning of the reference region. 3. Select Other Regions: Highlight all the regions you want to align. 4. Use Move to Playhead: Right-click on the toolbar, customize it, and enable “Move to Playhead.” This will align the selected regions to the playhead position. 5. Snap Settings: Ensure snap is set to “Absolute Value” for precise alignment. Thanks once again and God Bless you for your teaching talent and goodwill to share your superior knowledge.
Finally, someone who knows what they're talking about, and takes the time needed to understand the ins and outs of this amazing and potentially overwhelming realm of logic pro!
Hello, i’m musician, working in logic, and watching you from Russia. Your tutorials are the best. Thank you very much. You were first who told about articulation in the instruments. And here again - the best tutorial.
Hi Ildar...yes, have to agree, dancetech's Logic videos (and on other topics) are brilliant. He really seems to understand so much about the program, and, is able to show and inform us in a careful and methodical way. Best Logic tutorials on the net.
This has been of great hekp...Companies have been providing online classes with a huge fees,,,This has broken down the myth,,u dont need to pay huge fees. When tutor like u provide the same sitting at home,,Thank you Bro...This has been a great Session..Respect is all I can give you..
Simply the very best tutor there is in Logic in my opinion, learning so much, enjoying everything here, really inspiring and already putting into practice what I have learnt here, fantastic work Dancetech.......think Apple should name something after you in the next update.
Getting to grips with Logic... I've found a couple of your videos just when I've been hoping Logic did something that Garageband didn't ... and you keep coming up trumps. Thankyou! Really clear explanations - pitched at the right level. Great work!
Only just watched this, 5 days after the event.... I imported a file into ProX which I'd created for a short film, ie, played to the moving images etc. And when I looked at the tempo map I thought WTF!!! It all makes sense now though through pure chance I approached the subject from a different angle. If I'd watched this first I wouldn't have done what I did. Oh, and thanks, I've learnt a lot!
Absolutely LOVED this video AND the way you teach. BRAVO!!! Thank you so much! (I wonder if you happen to know how to deal with MIDI *AND* AUDIO smart tempo in ADAPT mode? I've never been able to figure out how to do both at the same time.)
Very good explanation indeed! Definitely there are bugs, as my Logic 10.4 suddenly crashed after playing around with Smart Tempo. I also noticed strange behaviour when editing in the File Tempo editor, e.g. the cycle playback. I would like to understand how the tempo detection algorithm works, as I'm trying to analyse an entire song (for transcribing) and at some point it seems to become too difficult to analyse it correctly. Manual editing is not that easy either.
Hello, Thank you for taking the time to help us understand the features in Logic pro X 10.4. Your videos are very good thorough. Question- I discovered this video after my daughter recorded an acoustic guitar & vocal on one track in Logic Pro 10.4. I would like to go back add a bass track and a synthetic beat track onto the project she already has finished. Can that be done at this point? Will Logic lock the beat track onto what she has already recorded? Thanks!!!
This is an excellent video…. I’m recording in 6/8 time but I’m not sure how smart tempo deals with times other than 4/4. I can get it to work but not real sure how. I need to work on it over and over until finally it gets the signature.
thanks! You can choose different signatures in the Smart Tempo window, but even with that you often have to work the Smart Tempo to get it right. Watch out for the TEMPO Constant/Variable, sometimes it chooses the wrong one. Sometimes simply switching the Constant/Variable & then switching it back again can make the Smart Tempo re-analyse the audio better. It will always be 'Variable' unless the audio was from a drum-machine or whatever or played to a click 👍
no it can't change the audio to match the set tempo, that bit is broken and anyways even when they fix those editor commands so they DO work it will simply turn on Flex automatically for any audio regions which require re-alignment with newly added tempo changes. Same with the command in the editor to change the region tempo to match the project tempo, it's broken, it does nothing... so that part is Flex anyways. This new tempo mapping works WITH Flex (or will, fully, when fixed), but it's not the same thing as Flex.
Wow, this was really helpful! For some reason when I first heard of smart tempo, I thought i could drag in any sample and it would conform to the project tempo (automating flex). But in fact, the project tempo conforms to the sample tempo! Am I correct in thinking that flex is still a manual process in Logic Pro X 10.4?
I make a loads of tracks. And of course at times people ask me to speed them up and cut a vocal. Last one I did was a nightmare with many types of regions and complex arrangement. Now this change's all that it seems. So to get my workflow right... here's how I work. Make beats in LPX w/ Maschine etc... drag in those audio files (as well as ADSR sample manager etc etc.) Bounce Synths into regions. Record live guitars, basses, & whatever (4-8 bars sections) and I create a whole ruff arrangement. I'll use KEEP all the time. Set my settings always to "On & Align"? Does this take CPU throughout the session then? Do I need it on all the time or can I just decide to turn it all on & analyze "only" when asked to speed up the song? Or is it best to have it always analyze everything? Does it correct the audio timing then for every take automatically? How often does it mess up& how easy is it to correct issues? Is there a sensitivity setting? Can we toggle it all on/off fast to check for artifacts etc? Thanks for any answers! I just want to ensure that I work the best way ...to save time later and how to get the very best results w/ least amount of clean up.
Great tutorial. Thank you. One question is -can I set a tempo map to a blank project and then import audio files recorded at a set tempo in a different DAW that will then follow the new tempo map I've created. I've been told that is not possible. Thanks
I mean, when I load up a blank (new) logic program and set a tempo map, that is, mapping out the tempo to a track that has a live drummer feel (speeding up and slowing down ) can I then import waves that are already recorded from a different project with a set tempo and the waves will change tempo according to the tempo map I've created. Thanks
Although obviously faster, it seems the end result is the same as beat mapping to create the tempo track, and then using Flex Time? As it was in Logic 9, just easier?
As someone just starting out with this, I'm wondering if you can apply adaptive tempo to tracks you have already recorded under KEEP? Can you highlight all of the tracks, hit tempo, and let it adjust everything already there (?).
yes you could do that. But if you played the original tracks to a metronome or drum beat etc then the result will be the same if you perform Adaptive tempo because you played TO a tempo rather than freestyle, Adaptive only works if the tracks have some tempo changes
i dont think so, osx used to have a midifile preview but i think they took it out in later versions. Only thing you can do i suppose is open it with garageband or logic to preview it ... or maybe find a free midifile preview app?
Awesome stuff. I often use a track stack to record a two amp sim (sgear) tracks summed together for an amp sound I like. Any reason why logic will not adapt the tempo when I do this? Seems to only work when recording an single audio track. Any way to get Logic to adapt to a track stack? Thanks for the great tutorials!
not sure what you mean. are you double tracking the bass on two tracks? in which case they will never be identical even if you use FLEX to sync them tighter. To get a 2 amp blended tone, use a copy of the bass on both tracks. One bass part, two amp rigs blended.
dancetech basically that’s what I’m doing. I’m recording 2 tracks at the same time (so i guess not technically double tracking)but since my guitar is being recorded direct I assumed that the waveforms would be the same, but since it's 2 tracks of course they wont identical! I’m simulating a multi amp setup in logic with amp sims
Quick update! All I needed to do was after playing in my part freely, open up the file tempo editor and under the actions tab click "remove original recording tempo and analyze again". Problem solved! Thanks for your great videos!
Really helpful video's, thank you:) I have been getting clicks and pops when editing timing of some vocals in monophonic flex mode, but when I editing the same audio in polyphonic flex mode there no clicks, but there is some sort of smearing artifacts induced. Any ideas, or could you do a video editing timing of vocals.
with this smart tempo thing, can i just import tracks and have lpx just snap the beats to the grid lines (at whatever bpm I've set the project to be)? Sorry, but this video is over an hour and i need something very specific that should only need 10-20 seconds to show me how it's done.. ;)
thats because when apple released this Smart Tempo feature it wasn't properly finished. Since then they've gone on to update it. I showed the manual 'fix' in this video, but since then further logic releases integrated the FLEX into the Smart Tempo properly. Obviously you use FLEX to adapt audio to a fixed project tempo. The Smart Tempo is used to get the downbeats of the audio, but the FLEX does the actual fitting of the audio to the fixed project tempo. Questions will arise as I watch. When you mute regions and record in their area Logic will adapt tempo to you. Q can you get the muted tracks to now follow the new tempo? - Other thing, lets say you record an idea freely. how dya mean? a workaround for what? there's more coming on this smart tempo. I'm going to show more stuff about getting other audio regions to sync up to tempo changes added by new recorded parts.
dancetech apologies... I was referring the tempo changes how they are acting buggy and leaving the information copied... Couldn't you just print it to another track or perhaps bounce in place therefore giving you a new region with the correct tempo of the project? This may not be an actual work... Just throwing it there to see it makes sense. I really do enjoy your tutorials. Thanks for sharing
I hate Smart Tempo. It makes me feel dumb. I hate that. Here is my problem: I want to add tracks to a free form jam session with my friend who plays the flute. The recordings were default at 120 bpm. I am adding a bass guitar track. Every time I delete a region (of the bass guitar track) that I want to re-do, it deletes the global tempo and puts it back to 120 bpm. It messes everything up. What gives?
well that's ok because if it did NOt delete the new tempo added from the previous deleted take then for the next take it would simply add new tempo information from the new take, so it makes no difference does it. When you do the take on the bass you are not playing to any click or midi parts to keep time, it's just freeform playing.
If I may, constructive criticism: You repeat yourself too often, both in your explanations and your rants. The content you provide is excellent, but you could use a bit of editing. I get being annoyed at Apple, and if I want to see a feature or a bug again, all I have to do is scroll backward. Peace and all that, :-) PaA

Can't really tailor a tutorial for everyone. This approach helps more than it annoys.
@@joemccarthy8293 there's a difference in a lecture and a video, which can be replayed until something is understood. But, yeah, teachers do that. I used to tape lectures at Uni, and I'd note the repetition whilst transcribing. Video is simply different.

Nah I don't agree with your logic at 43.00 on moving a tempo variation clip to the left and into an area with regions. When you move the clip over other regions it adapts to that local tempo but it leaves it's tempo variation behind. This is wrong, it must remove it's tempo footprint when it is no longer there at the earlier spot. The area that the clip leaves behind should be without tempo variations, that is logic.
No Nonsense teacher absolutely brilliant as some of us ie:me needs a no nonsense teacher to be focused..plus if the software is at fault he really lays into the software developers..no joke. I luv it..so if he says it works it bloody works..fantastic we need this kinda teacher in our schools..

love the way you explain stuff, a little slow. But sometimes that's what I need so no complaints
I really am appreciative of your work on this video! Logic is brilliant, but the subtleties will drive you crazy. Again, can't thank you enough.
Very, very, very useful. Especially at 53:00 for adapting tempo to existing recordings....
my feelings, exactly

I just started using Logic about two weeks ago. This video is very useful for us beginners. Cheers dude!!

should all be in the tutorials. You'd just analyse the audio track, create the tempo map & record as usual.

yes it's tidier now, that was the first release of smart tempo.
we're spoiled but it's got to be said on a regular basis: thank you.
Love it , keep ranting !
In the section with the multitrack stems, didn't Logic interpret the tempo at half the correct speed? It should be around 168 bpm rather than 84.

No Nonsense teacher absolutely brilliant as some of us ie:me needs a no nonsense teacher to be focused..plus if the software is at fault he really lays into the software developers..no joke. I luv it..so if he says it works it bloody works..fantastic we need this kinda teacher in our schools..
