    The Exorcist is one of those rare cases in movie history where everything works like clockwork...And it works because of the decisions of this man. The movie could have been a disaster...Just look at the make up tests...A lesser director would maybe have done a traditional terror film...the monster, the scares...Friedkin made a masterpiece of genuine psychological fear. Possibly still the scariest film ever made. Brilliant man.

    • @BULL.173
      @BULL.173 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very well said. The Exorcist is the type of film that could have been so easily screwed up. But not only does it work, it's damn close to what I consider to be a perfect film. Friedkin brought great vision and talent to The Exorcist.But I think the greatest strength he has as a director is his integrity. He took Blatty's story and subject matter seriously and treated them with respect. The film's depiction of evil is indeed horrific, violent, and deeply disturbing. But this depiction is brilliantly accomplished without even a hint of exploitation or sensationalism. The Exorcist is really the exact opposite of schlocky "gross out" horror. This honest matter of fact approach is where The Exorcist draws much of its power.

    I don’t know which is funnier, the fact that Friedkin compared The Heretic to a porno and said that the channel “ought to be ashamed” for showing it, or the fact that the interviewer didn’t even flinch and acted like he had said nothing of any more significance than “I have to go soon.”

    Excellent interview! He really explains to my once 17-year old mind what happened in that film I saw in 1979. I could never see past the graphic horror, yet somehow I innately felt there was something strongly real about the story, the characters..especially the opening scene that is my favorite part of the movie, containing elements of mystery...pure foreshadowing....the red-orange sun, Father Merrin walking thru a dark bazaar with streaks of light occasionally beaming upon him, the two dogs entangled in a fight symbolizing the forces of light against the darkness...and the horse carriage with a grotesque figure that nearly runs down the delicate priest...to name a few.

    @dzanier 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Friedkin used a word to describe the film that many wouldn't think to use, but it is very appropriate to the movie: uplifting. If you saw the film at a very young age, it's more than likely you were too frightened and shocked to see the positive message in the film. I started to watch it with great frequency when I was about 20-21, and I honestly feel anybody who's an adult should be able to see why it's an ultimately uplifting film. Many horrible things occur in the movie, but the ending isn't just about the girl's being saved from the demon, it's about redemption. That is where the character of Karras comes into play. He needs to be saved as much as the girl, but on a spiritual level. His pride, ego and intellect all take a beating in this film. In the end he's humbled when Merrin asks him to leave the room. While seated on the landing outside the room, the mother asks "Is she going to die," and he looks up and quite resolutely says "No." What happens from that moment until the moment Father Dyer gives him last rites is Karras' redemption, and it's as vital to understanding the movie's message of hope as the successful exorcism of the girl is. A brilliant film that can't be duplicated simply because the source work it draws from is incomparable. No film on the subject of diabolical possession will ever surpass the Exorcist. It's uncompromising because it had to be.

Scorsese said that the second in some way is superior to the First One, I'm not sure about this but "Exorcist II"remains a movie of High Class and Visionary Genius , Boorman is One of the greatest living directors. He refused to direct the first one.

    Exorcist 2 was a bad film, and it was done solely for commercial reasons. Now Exorcist 3, which came out 11 years after this interview, is a very good film which has some characters from the first one, but it's adapted from a Bill Blatty novel called "Legion" and directed by him. It mixes certain elements of the Exorcist with the story of the Zodic Killer. Actually Friedkin was picked by Blatty to direct it, but they had some creative difficulties and differences on the ending, and Friedkin wound up leaving the project. But if asked what he thinks about Exorcist 3, I can assure you he wouldn't be as hard on that as he was on Exorcist 2. Exorcist 3 has integrity, and is in and of itself a very worthwhile film. .

The First One is a masterpiece for sure but indulges in gore and manichean idea of Good & Evil. The second in some way is beyond Good & Evil and the cast is Fantastic including the direction of Boorman, a True Visionary.

      You absolutely could NOT do this film today. In Europe in 1979, you could , but never in America. All of these filmmakers of the 70's were able to do things , just by a fluke, and it could not be repeated when producers were actually paying attention.

    🤔 I have to agree . Exorcist ll:The Heretic pisses all over the original.They put so much money (for that time) & it's just plain awful.

    Only Friedkin can compare Exorcist to Dickens and Tolstoy lol.

    Bill Blatty, I'd imagine, has made more $$$ than Poe; but, he has never become a great literary figure.

    He's totally right about the sequel. Absolutely boring, badly written and pointless movie. It was made just to cash in on the success and Friedkin is just honest "they took the logo, a few characters and trashed them". If Blatty and himself had been on charge it could have been a good movie, just as Godfather Part II. Godfather II could have been a total disaster too.

      +TheDensley7 I agree. If nothing else (and Boorman's film it quite substantial and interesting philosophically), _Exorcist II: The Heretic_ is a visual masterpiece. Much credit to William Fraker for that.
      It was far from being a cash grab, the problem with it commercially is it completely defied expectations.
      It was unlike any other sequel in movie history, take that however you wish.

      @@FungusMossGnosis I completely agree with your point of view! Honestly, THE EXORCIST is a nice chiller, with a very good cast and very well directed by Mr. Friedkin, but nothing more. It is certainly no masterpiece. It pulled the right ropes for a Catholic/Christian trained audience, but if you are not so, the whole premise is pretty puerile. Boorman had the intelligence of drifting away from this and providing a very thoughtful script, but as it has been said before, the audience was just expecting more of the same. We cannot blame them for that

    He's a good director but it's been his misfortune to make movies that don't quite measure up to his first two masterpieces, especially financially. Some have been critical successes (Sorcerer, Rampage, Killer Joe, the version of Twelve Angry Men he directed for Showtime)Though it was very unlikely he'd make anything as great as those two, with the exception of "To Live and Die in LA", he hasn't really done anything since then that has been both commercially and critically successful. Still, he's a director of great relevance.
