  • Humanitarian and UN flights are now landing at the Kismayu International Airport in Somalia while the streets are slowly filling up, just 2 months after the Kenya Defence Forces under the umbrella of Amisom routed out the Al-Qaeda linked al shabaab terror group on the 2nd of October 2012. But even with the relative peace, a no fly zone for commercial flights is still in place as well as a ban on charcoal trade, believed to have been al- shabaab's main source of revenue. With stock piles estimated at 40 million dollars an equivalent of 3.4billion Kenyan shillings, residents now want the 6 month ban imposed by the un lifted.

The ban on the charcoal that is already there should be lifted to allow the locals to recoup their investment. This would raise the moral of the city, and convince the popoulation that they are better off supporting the new adminstration. The argument that the money will go to Al-Shabab is absurd, since the purpose of taking the city from them was to deprive them control of the taxes. Kenya should not embark on such a project half heartedly. The new adminstration must be supported fully.
