- Once upon a time, there was a family whose father’s occupation was a woodcutter. He had 7 sons. One of his sons was odd, which his body was just slightly larger than a thumb. Because of his little body, his father named him as “ Thumb boy”. The father hoped that one day the Thumb boy will have the same build as his older brothers’. However, the Thumb boy didn’t grow as what he had hoped him to be. He and his wife was upset whenever they thought about the problem of the Thumb boy.
Woodcutter : Why is our son’s body just big as a thumb? Why doesn’t he grow up like his older brothers?
Wife : That’s right. I hope he will have the same build as his older brothers’ in the future.
One day, the difficult time arrived. In these several months, Thumb boy’s parents couldn’t make any money to support the family because the boss who always bought his fire woods stopped buying the wood anymore.
Woodcutter : Sir. Do you need to buy fire woods?
Buyer : Oh! I don’t need fire woods, and I might stop buying them for temporary because the requirement for fire woods has significantly decreased, sir.
Woodcutter : Alright then.
Woodcutter : Honey, I’m back. I didn’t sell any fire woods today.
Wife : If so, we won’t have any money to buy foods for our children.
Woodcutter : Hir! … You’re right, honey.
Woodcutter : Honey, I have a plan in my mind. I want to abandon our sons in the jungle, or they will meet a wealthy person who is able to raise them.
Wife : Yes honey. Let’s do as your plan.
Woodcutter : If you think so, we will start our plan tomorrow.
Wife : Yes honey.
Woodcutter : However our Thumb boy is clever. He’s always able to solve the problem.
Wife : You’re right. If that is the case, he will be able to take care his older brothers.
Coincidentally, Thumb boy heard about everything his parents had said.
Thumb boy : My parents are going to abandon me.
When the morning came, Thumb boy woke up very early. He ran to a riverbank and collected many pebbles.
As the plan prepared, the woodcutter and his wife took their sons to find fire woods in a jungle where those children have never been to.
On the way to the jungle, Thumb boy, who was walking at the back, seized an opportunity to drop the pebbles which he had picked from the riverbank along the way in order to make a sign.
Father : Sons! Please wait for us here. I and your mother will go to find something for you to eat.
When arrived the deep jungle, the woodcutter and his wife left their sons there as what they had planned and thought that those 7 sons couldn’t find the way back home.
Realizing their parents had disappeared, all 6 older brothers got so frightened and cried their eyes out. At the moment, Thumb boy expressed sympathy and promised to take all his 6 older brothers back home.
Older brothers : Dad! Mom! Where are you? Why didn’t you both come back? HikHik! Why?
Thumb boy : Brothers! Please don’t worry because I dropped pebbles on the way here so we will get back home by just following those pebbles.
Older brothers : Really? You’re so clever to drop pebbles to make a sign; otherwise, we will die here.
This time, Thumb boy walked at the front to lead the way for his older brothers by following the pebbles he had dropped on the way to the jungle with his parents until they finally arrived home as their desire.
Older brothers : Er! That’s our house. Yeah! Yeah! We have arrived home.
Older brothers : Mom! Dad!
Seeing their 7 sons coming back, their parents were so shocked.
No sooner, the woodcutter and his wife decided to abandon their 7 sons again.
This time Thumb boy didn’t know about the plan, so he didn’t go to collect any pebbles at the riverbank. Doubting his parents planning to abandon him again, Thumb boy ran to stuff some pieces of rice with him. On the way to the jungle, Thumb boy dropped those pieces of rice in order to indicate the way. Unfortunately, the rice that Thumb boy had dropped along the way was all eaten by birds.
Father : Sons. Wait us here. Don’t go anywhere. I’ll go to find some food for you guys.
Older brothers : Okay father. But don’t go too long like last time.
Mother : Alright son. Wait here.
Older brothers : It’s quite late now, but our parents haven’t come back yet. Brother! Do you remember the way back home?
Thumb boy : Yes brothers! I remember it because I had dropped pieces of rice along the way.
Older brothers : Great! Now let’s quickly find the way back home because we’re so hungry.
Thumb boy : Yis! I had dropped many pieces of rice along the way, but why can’t I find them ? Oh! Maybe birds ate all those pieces of rice as I had seen a bird eating the rice.
Older brothers : (Crying) Hikhik! What should we do? We will die in this jungle because of either hunger or being eaten by foxes as I heard a fox howling near here.
