George Gilder on knowledge, power, and the economy

- This week on Uncommon Knowledge, author George Gilder discusses his conception of knowledge, power, and the economy, as described in his latest book, Knowledge and Power: The Information Theory of Capitalism and How it is Revolutionizing our World. He argues that a low entropy, or predictable and stable, carrier is required for the emergence of knowledge -- whether it be a fiber optic cable and communication, or a social system governed by the rule of law and economic innovation. Such a social system is not spontaneous, but rather developed through sacrifice and a religious order.

Here's 40 minutes of deep-thinking on information theory, capitalism and how true change is made. Forty minutes and deep-thinking probably won't get a lot of click-throughs, but if you're in the mood for a mental challenge this is worth your time.

I fully agree with Zelator1000! I was honestly bummed last night as I was searching for something stimulating to watch. Though, right when I was about to give up this popped up. Gilder absolutely blows my mind! He's incredible! The other conversation with him is great as well. We do need more U.K. interviews to rival C. Rose, whom after going to ABC has become unabashedly partisan. Please Interview Ben Carson. I would like to see an in depth conversation with him that's not on Hannity.
I so admire this man: he's hard for me to follow and I always feel like I just took a harrowing exam after I listen to him. Great, great mind -

If you never watch another interview but this you have learned more about American success in these 40 minutes and how to achieve it then in any other display of sheer wisdom you will ever hear! He nucleate the 2 years of trump's success in a fashion In a concise fashion that's utterly unique!
That was awesomely delicious. So many golden moments it makes me want to read all of his books.

Generally agree with the post. However, with regard to "He argues that a low entropy, or predictable and stable, carrier is required for the emergence of knowledge"; I am reminded of the Orson Wells line in 'The Third Man' about the comparison between Italy and Switzerland.

You can see the "need for closure" kick in @ 19:30. I figuratively facepalmed. "Planning doesn't work because it produces noise, but the things my culture tells me need to be planned are ok".
jordantwiegand Who planned the electromagnetic spectrum then? The assertion that the carrier needs to be planned has a burden of proof. The truth about it seems to meet the criteria for information that the market could provide, and thus by his own previous assertion would provide best.
I agree. He says it's important to distinguish between the carrier and the content, but when it comes to social issues he seems to draw the line well into territory I'd consider obviously to belong in content (i.e., what constitutes a 'family' etc.). Our political framework allows a 'carrier', a context for information flow/advancement/surprise/whatever, but individual values inform the content, determine its shape, and generate the 'surprise'.

So is this show going monthly or what? It's the only reason I subscribe to this channel and I'm about ready to give up. I can simply come back every 6 months or so when I need a Dr. Sowell fix and see what new stuff they're brought to the table.

The Industrial Revolution did away with knowledge as power. As soon as the employer set the monetary value for the knowledge that you were selling, it became clear that you no longer had a say in how your knowledge could make you a living. It was better to have stayed on your plot of land and cultivated your soil to produce anything that could be sold or bartered. Your knowledge of agriculture was immensely more valuable not only to your community, but to you children and your children’s children through passing the land on in posterity and passing on the knowledge of how to live from it. Each generation would hv discovered new ways to resolve their financial lives, but always keeping the power and control over their knowledge and it’s worth.
To magnuscattus: invoking a pop culture comedian devalues the conversation and the message in the book: there is a gender crisis in contemporary western society, no doubt, but I don't believe Gilder suggests "abdication" of the masculine role in culture in preference to some vague new matriarchal order. Rather, that object-love, so much stronger a male urge than female, is a seminal point from which nature/ culture converge, and human progress (the real message) emerges, starting with the notion of "family."
Good interview, unfortunate that he doesn't know the difference between libertarians and anarchists.
Apparently George Gilder still doesn't understand structural racism in all this otherwise reasoned transcendence.
