My quest for moving to electric and away from gas had the following criteria, (1) known brand name (2) battery cost and compatibility for trimmers and leaf blowers, and battery cost.(3) purpose built as an electric mower. Some brands took last years gas mower and put an electric motor on top. Cost is a factor but you get what you pay for. Stihl was my choice.
@@kenrobertson9570 Are you in Northern Virginia (or near) Northern Virginia? If so, contact the Stihl dealer at Northern Tools in Fredericksburg, VA. They have a 510 on display. Also, check out the Stihl dealer at Morton’s Power Equipment in Fredericksburg. They have a good stock of mowers, specifically Tori and Stihl mowers.
Echo is several years old. I still have mine, no issues with anything. Stihl is fairly new. The new Echo (not in this video) appears to be a rebadged Greenworks.
Two days ago I purchased the stihl 510 36 volt with the 7.5 Amp battery. With fast charging unit. The stihl 510 is very quiet. Compared to the Toro and work nitro. Which both when running are as loud as whine, from the exhaust end. Of a fully spooled up turbine engine.
Quite a lot of changes since this video on the RMA460. Comes with a 36 volt, 4.8 amp battery with an excellent increased run and quicker charging time. Two inch narrower deck not an issue for me and my needs. I like the one handed height adjustment feature. Currently the Stihl sells here in 🇨🇦 at $700.00 plus tax for the set of mower, AK30 battery and charger. Expensive! I am buying it anyway as a Stihl fan and already have a number of quality Stihl equipment.🇨🇦👍👍👍👍👨🦳
Might wanna Compare apples with apples. Area covered on a 19” vs 21”? What were you expecting when they both weigh virtually the same. Didn’t mention built quality, steel vs plastic. Hight adjusters, steel vs plastic. And the “on off” switch you referred to on the Stihl is actually the eco mode switch. Not sure if the Echo has this.
ECHO upgraded their mower now to their 56v eForce. This comparison is mostly to show how 2 similar priced items compare. Either one will mow your lawn just fine, but I figured I would show you some results from my series of tests. Also, the new ECHO one is self propelled.
No, sorry I haven't. They offered a second battery for a discount, like $50 more. I'm sure with 2 batteries it would be long enough to mow any reasonable size lawn.
Your 5min of mowing : area is inconsistent since the echo lawn mower cutting weight is 21 inches and the Stihl is only 19 inches. Now do the same test with both mowers being either 21 inches or 19 inches then post the results, but other than that it was still a awesome video.
Thanks, since I made this video, ECHO now has another model push mower. I'll have to compare the two brands and see if they make a couple 21" models that are similar in price.
You forgot to mention the cost of an additional battery, also the associated lawn care equipment and associated battery compatibility. Good revue but for quality the Stihl gets my vote.
That's a good point. ECHO changed their push mower lineup for 2022 with the introduction of their new eForce 56v lineup. The mower is now a steel deck and self-propelled. The Stihl mower is very nice too. The motor engages quickly and gets up to full speed very fast.
I think the Echo looks sexier than the Stihl but looks more "plasticky" (weaker?) than the Stihl. Anyway...not sure Echo is available in Aus. Another issue... is Echo a long term player? Victa 82v line has been discontinued which is very unfortunate and now all us Victa owners are scrambling about looking for batteries. Hopefully Stihl will be around a long time. So...Stihl for me.
They're both long term brands that you don't have to worry about. ECHO made an upgrade to their mowers and no longer offer the plastic material. The new mower is self-propelled and part of their eForce 56v system.
Sadly we can’t get the Echo mowers in Australia. Just as the Americans can’t get Victas despite the company being owned since 2008 by Briggs and Stratton.
Why does the echo get a star for size, you picked the smallest model that Stihl makes. Also the bag size? You said both were emptied 3 times, and how much it cut in ten minutes. The echo was a bigger radius, so obviously it would cut more. You put a smaller machine against a slightly bigger machine and then penalized it for your choice. Personally I’d say they are pretty much even
yeah I'd say both these mowers are pretty lacking. the rma 460 for one thing is part of their residential line and echo's 58v platform as a whole is not great. I'm definitely excited for their new 56v stuff but their 58v platform is pretty bad from what I've seen. and the stihl rma 510 is rather underwhelming given it's part of their professional AP line.
I tried their personal pace gas mower many years ago and found that I like the hand control better. I would like to try their 60v to see how it works. Someone else recently mentioned they like the Toro too.
@@MarkThomasBuilder I had Toro's for the last 30 's , my last one survived 15 years.had starting issues in early spring and late fall , got old ,out to pasture and shot in the gas tank.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: What one would you choose and why? Would you need it to be self-propelled?
I would choose Echo, because it’s Echo need I say more?😀
I read self-propelled mower transmissions clog up in wet grass so that's ruled them out for me.

Great video; however in my opinion, the Stihl RMA 510V may have been a better comparison to the Echo mower…
Yes, I compared these because they're close in price. ECHO has a new mower this year that I'd like to make a new video comparison with.
you can't get the 510 anywhere on the east coast.

That was my thought as well. The 510 would have been a much better comparison but if it isn’t available you go with the next one down.

Interesting, I'll have to take a close look at some Greenworks.

I like the quieter sound when running battery powered mowers. The 510 model looks nice. I like the way Stihl gets up to top speed quickly.

2023, echo all the way. 56v platform is hard to beat. Good luck Stihl.
I think the 56v is here to stay for ECHO.
Have you tried the stihl mower with bagging? Any idea on runtime?
No, sorry I haven't. They offered a second battery for a discount, like $50 more. I'm sure with 2 batteries it would be long enough to mow any reasonable size lawn.
@@MarkThomasBuilder thanks for the response! I plan on picking one up with an extra battery :)
I really you charge time is very important Keep up the great work🍻🍺
Thanks, will do!
@@MarkThomasBuilder Stihl also has another mower the RMA 510 which has the same cutting width and a 60 min charge time.
Blade mount. Plastic or metal ?
Metal, I believe. I don't have the mowers to look at anymore to give you a 100% answer.

Love my Echo gear. Stihl can be quirky in my experience. Echo gets my dollar.
I can relate to that.

I bought a Victa 82V yesterday, so not discontinued, awesome mower, just no self-propelled feature and it's not light.
Dude, do you live in Australia? It is an awesome mower and, yes, I find it heavy too. Its nose seems to burrow down.@@robertsaca3512
4:00 that's the switch for eco mode
stihl because I have a weedeater and blower which uses the same battery...
Can't imagine all that plastic on the Echo will age well.
Yeah, it's hard to say, but it seems very durable so far. They switched to metal a year ago.
I would go with the 2022 Echo hands-down. although i like the design on the Stihl. The all new 46V battery lawn mower by echo is has it all.
the echo is the better choice only if you dont have the money or are too cheap to buy the stihl.
I appreciate the comparison, I went from the echo to the toro 60v and the toro blows the echo away
Thanks for the info. I've only tried a Toro gas push mower so far. I'll have to look at the one you have.
@@MarkThomasBuilder one other thing was I had a issue and the echo customer support was terrible
Thanks for letting me know. I've heard good things from someone as well.
Had a 2 Toro's gas last35 years , they still work , I got the Toro 60volt Personal Pace , love it , best machine on the market , did my homework
Comparing the old Stihl 19” to a 21”? Biased much? Of course the 21” will mow more, especially if you walk faster!
These 2 mowers are close in price, so I tried to come up with several tests to show how they compare in a variety of categories.

i would probbaly say stihl
Stihl makes a great mower. ECHO updated their mower lineup and don't offer this exact one anymore.

Toro 60v Personal Pace , all the way wins . Paid 500$,Hamilton Ontario

Rather use gas
It depends on how tall the grass is. Gas is my choice for tall ditch mowing. If it's normal maintenance, I'd go with battery power.
