It was actually ALD who brought the 550 out of the vault. They are known for doing collabs on unpopular sneakers. It was such a success that new balance decided to make GR color ways.
I bought a new balance shoe in 87. It was the model James Worthy wore. It had an insole that shaped to one’s foot. It was a very comfortable shoe. I played in a outdoor semi pro league in them
Once you have worn the ALDs for a week it is crazy how nice the leather breaks in. I am size 11.5 in most shoes, but for whatever reason 550s and 650s fit massive in 11.5 for me. I tried 11 but it was too tight. So I did the old double up sockliner routine and they feel perfect.
I have the 550 ald lows and a pair of gr lows, and to me it’s night and day in terms of material quality-synthetic grs feel too stiff to wear. The best of all, however, are the United Arrows 550 collab, the super soft suede makes them wonderful on feet
These are my favorite shoes in a long time. 80's vibe 🔥goodness, super comfortable, love the colorway and mine broke in so good. Awesome video as always!
Hmm..I feel like my 650Rs have much better leather than any of my 550s. Much softer and less plasticy. The regular 550s have a lower grade leather with a thick coating on them. The 650r is a lot more supple, you can see the grain, and after a few wears you can see a natural creasing.
I have both the Grey ALD 550 and the GR green 550. The leather panels feel exactly the same. My guess is they’ve cheapened their materials since then because my pair was from the original GR launch when they were easy to get. Now that demand has been through the roof, they are just pumping out as many pairs as possibly with whatever materials their factories can find.
I saw a pair for $50....think I need to go back today and buy them. Women's 9 mens 11 same shoe...I've heard get reviews of this shoe. Hope they are still there today. ❤
I got like 4 pair of different colors at the store $40 Marshall’s 😂 they fire ya sleeping in these 650 got the light blues, orange, beige and grey and white 🔥
I'm always impressed Jodi!!! The content is A1. I just can't get into New Balance shoes. I knew a guy in college from New York and he was such a... all he wore was New Balance and it annoyed the hell out of me. Not the brands fault but I just can't.
Tapering is fine if you have skinny heels and/ or ankles (as I do) yet still need a wide toe box. I can't wear some Jordan models - especially HTs - because of this. Some narrow shoes like chucks or blazers crush my toes. J1s or Yeezy 350s are most comfortable for me, this might also work if I could find a pair.
I think the only colorway that wasn't a pre-order was the red colorway, but nonetheless, Aime Leon Dore and New Balance doing a great job doing releases like this. Great video🔥
So the pre order was actually last year July sometime and was only for the Navy, grey and green color ways. Just got my pair in from the preorder April 7th. Love them

I managed to buy a pair of United Arrows 550 thanks to my good friend living in Japan You should check that pair out as it is all suede and I feel it’s a level above the GR ones I own (I have 3 of those).
I want a pair of 650s I do have more of a narrow foot would you say stay true to size or half size down im scared to order because im not completely positive what size to go with. Help me out? Im around 6 foot tall i dont want to look like i have baby feet either. Lol
If I remember correctly, you had to be chosen to pre order, it wasn't everyone who wanted it got it within a time window. I think you had to have purchased the original ALD x 550 to have gotten a chance to get picked
From what I recall, I believe you only had to have an account at the time the preorder was launched, and you were sent a unique link. I preordered last summer and it was my first ALD purchase

Yup, leather quality is just ok. I have the GR 550S and ALD 550s. The quality on the ALD 550s is lesser than what I expect from NB. The MADE LINE models and other collabs have immaculate materials. Also I bought some forum 84s recently and the leather quality on them is pretty much the same as the ALD pairs
Don't expect super high quality on these. They don't market these as made in the USA or England. They typically source cheaper material for shoes they are gonna have mass assembled in China, Vietnam etc. i.e these, 574, 997H etc. This is purely based on what I've noticed over the years. I could be wrong, since I only mess with "made" .
what intersting about this collab is they think ALD bringing the hype for new balance, meanwhile majority people outside of US doesnt even know ALD before this collab and people outside US generally love New Balance and ALD and this model 550 play as seasoning with it
The materials also come down go where it’s made. Anything “Made in USA” or “Made in England” typically use more premium materials and the craftsmanship are generally a lot better. The 550 and 650s are made in their general factory in Vietnam. Still pretty good, in my opinion.
Hey if anyone reads this, I really hope you can help out. I recently bought a pair of the New Balance 550 in the Laker pack or something and I got the blue one. Just tryna figure out if the leather used on it is pigskin leather as my religious beliefs prevent me from associating with shoes made with pigskin leather. Been tryna find out but I can't. Anyone seeing this who can help would really appreciate a reply. Cheers and have a nice day.
these are the ALDs which are the designer/premium shoe so they went for more on the release. Now they’re GR and over saturated so they don’t go for as much
Pretty disappointed with your recommendation around soul premise. Ended up ordering a bag from them about 3 weeks ago, and have had no updates from them regarding my order. I reached out to them via social media and their website and still can’t get a response from anyone. Going to have to call my credit card company and get the transaction reversed now. Highly disappointed
The red color wasn’t available in the preorder, that was only available in the raffle ALD did and the general release on NB’s site I have a green pair of the ALD 650s, and compared to my Jordans, these things were comfy right out of the box. I absolutely love the styling on these and plan to wear the snot out of them.
Do you also have the ALD 550 green pair? I like the 550s way more than the 650s personally I was not impressed with the foam flimsy shit on top personally.
It's so crazy how shoes are comfortable to different people. So many people say AF1s are so comfy and they feel like woodblocks to me and people say Jordan 1s are uncomfortable and they are just a cloud under my feet.

Agreed on the GR's...my burgundy/cyan pair is 10x more stiff than my ALD pair

For me personally i think the leather quality is good enough. They break in Nicely and super comfortable. i absolutely love these

ALD founder Teddy Santis is killin it at New Balance. NB made him the creative director of the company.
The 550 and 650s retro (collab or not, are made overseas). Most New balance collabs tend to be made in USA. That explains the change in quality.

I have 4 pairs of the lows and I had to go up a full size everytime. Plus if you have wide feet, I wouldn't suggest going true to size 😩

NB in Singapore lists them as synthetic leather uppers. Hope it helps!

I didn't like the mesh collar, even though it's the original design, it cheapens the rest of the look of the shoe. Hence I prefer the lows.
