Happy days 😀. Back from sailing holidays and catching up on your channel. Just caught up and noticed this video was uploaded as I was watching the previous one. Great to see you guys have finally got out there. Lots of clips out there of whales attacking boats in the med and breaking their rudders. Apparently you should turn off your depth sounder as the sonar affects the whales. Just sold our Sun Odyssey 32, as we are buying a holiday home in Ireland. I badly need to buy another boat, as I am doing too much house and garden chores. Setting a very bad precedent 😅😅😅
Oh, don't you love when that happens! haha!! Good timing. Thanks for your kind words too. We're so glad we got out of Melbourne when we did. Just after we left, the whole state went into lockdown would you believe! 😳 And they're still in lockdown! 😌 That's crazy re: med whales. You know.. I think I've been watching too many movies perhaps? 🤔 Oh sorry to hear you sold your Jeanneau! But, the holiday home sounds AMAZING!!! 😻
Great filming and VO! The whales were spectacular!! We recently saw some whales off of Cape Cod in the US but they weren’t nearly that close. Looking forward to more of your adventures!

Hi Guys , Thanks for another great video. Your trip is very entertaining. I would like to know if those big whales are smart enough to keep their distance. All the best. regards Peter.
Awesome episode Kristina. The whales we scarcely spectacular. Sydney Harbour gave me goosebumps. Lived there for years & my boys are there. Can’t wait to see them when boarders open again. Thanks for showcasing one of the worlds most beautiful harbours. ❤️

Aww thanks Pete!! I think we need a refresher 😂❤️👌 Ps. I learnt the hard way the other day on the headsail furl 😬😬 but I still have all my fingers... so... that was a bit of a wake up call (and close call)! 😱
That is amazing! For all the worry it is, and rightly so, it's still an amazing thing to see. I can't offer any advice on what to do with regard to sailing with whales and avoiding them but what I can say is WOW! That is some fantastic footage. I love the longer video and such great content. Sydney is a beautiful place the "fairies" (good old Aussie accent! lol) are also great to see. As for the bucket list thing it sure is. My wife was like a little kid when I finally took her to Sydney (where I was born but didn't grow up in). Growing up in Scotland she always thought of Sydney as being Australia (I corrected her by living in Perth, which in my opinion is far prettier :) ) but it was a bucket list thing for her, as was going to Bondi beach. Where we stayed was a beautiful hotel directly opposite Luna Park. So every morning she woke up to the iconic Sydney skyline of the bridge, the Opera House, and all of the rest. Absolutely great content and I am looking forward to the next log.
Oh thanks so much Craig for taking the time to write to us! You're so right, they are just SO VERY majestic. Incredible creatures. And the sounds they make. WOW. Whale strikes happen. It's a thing. Boats sink and whales can die -or have scars on their backs from propellors. I live on the West coast of Canada and we have Humpbacks too (as well as Orcas and others). When a whale is sighted within 100 meters of your boat and your engine is running the rules are that you should put your boat into neutral. You can leave the engine running but at least stop the prop from spinning to reduce the risk of harming the animal if there is any contact. If you see one whale, there is usually many more. Keep under 10 knots (usually not a problem for a sailboat). Give them the right of way, don't cut off their path. Especially if they have a calf. We have to stay farther away if they are resting. Other types of whales require larger distances (Orcas: 200m, Belugas 400m)
Hi Marcel - wow that’s amazing. Gosh!! That’s incredible and completely understandable. 👏 Thanks for this insight. We would have been in neutral a lot of the time! 😄 Question, what if you’re sailing... then what do you do? Bring in the sails? Or change course?
@@KristinasTravels They recommend to maintain your heading- if safe to do so, (ie not headed for another whale, another boat, a rock or other such hazard). Since you probably aren't sailing above 10 knots, you won't have to reduce your sails but, you may want to do so to slow down and take in the sights- You are on a FREE, impromptu, whale watching tour! Also, an accidental collision at speed would not be good for your boat or the whale.
Wow absolutely loving the journey. Happy to see that all of your hard work is now paying off, u guys are living the dream, literally Can't wait for the next episode, been hanging out for them. Life in lockdown is so depressing
Awwww, hang in there Eric! I'm doing my best to get the videos out every week for you!!!! This one took me about 3 days 🤓🤓🤓🤓 Haha! So honestly, THANK YOU for your love! Hope you can get out of lockdown very soon.. where are you Sydney, Melbs, Bris or Cairns?! Gosh.. almost the whole country is doing it tough hey!
I told I’d be ( whale ) watching all of the time - as someone beat me to it glad your having a whale of an adventure and thank you for taking us along for the ride! God speed x
Congratulation to you both! It shows that you are 50% media professional and 50% a captain! :-) Sydney is the most beautiful harbour in the world! I stopped for a year to explore all nooks and crannies in Sydney and close-by Double Bay before heading further north to the incomparable Whitsundays. In Sydney Harbour I berthed at Birkenhead Marina, (favourite location with plenty of coffee's n' shops!) Woolwich Marina (if you like a good view of NYE fireworks, and long walks past a famous pub to the ferry) and RSYS, (nice restaurant for members !) Worst risk-factor at sea is definitely lack of quality sleep. I learned on the job too and to this day I'm still obsessing about ropes staying safely onboard at all time!! Now when in Sydney you will feel so much more experienced and comfortable in your sail routine honing your sailing skills on the job! Why not slip under the lifting road bridge (triggering some road-rage...) and visit Bantry Bay for some secluded R&R there? Say hello to the friendly cockatoos that will visit your boat. One landed a foot away from my face and stayed for lunch. (Roasted Chicken is a winner.) A gentleman served excellent coffees from a roaming barge with a diesel outboard (!). A purveyor of Ice-creams, sweet "Danish" (the Danes call them "Viennas") and newspapers are on offer too. Also: Goodonya, Hayfield dingy is a absolute top top brand and in the Whitsundays they can make some solar covers for it. Q: How do you spot a rental yacht? A: They have no radar-dome or emergency life raft and usually no dingy outboard, but always bright yellow covers on the dingy. 4-stroke outboard is often a pain. I had a Honda 2hp and same Suzuki 6hp and I rather stick to my current ultralight storable 2-stroke 3 hp Mercury at just 13 kg! Re wales: It is nothing you can do so just relax and slow down and keep motor running because it may be a good idea. Prevention is futile so trust the wales to be careful. Obviously you cannot predict where a 25,000 kg wale will broach at speed next, so then you can not predict if one may hit your vessel. Good news is that they seldom cause any damage, because why would they? Apparently they do it to attract females, or just to let everyone know they are around.
Hey Mates, another great video. I know you found the whales in front of you rather scary and rightfully so, but let's take a look at some things. 1. How many people in the world have actually seen the ocean in person? 2. How many of those people have actually had the wonderful pleasure of being out on the open ocean? (raises hand) 3. Of those few fortunate individuals that have been on the open ocean, how many have seen whales up close (or closer than comfortable)? Moral of the story; where there is danger, there is also much beauty. You have experienced something that few have and most never will. Good on you mates.
So manyyyyyyy! 🐳 Aww, thank you! This kind of love inspires us to make the next one, so keep the good vibes coming. 🤩🤩🤩 Hope you’re having an amazing week 🤍
Ohhhh HEY!! 👋 Gosh, what we would do to be in the Netherlands right now 🙌🙌 Hope you’re having a wonderful summer up there! Thank you so much for watching and tuning-in to this crazy Aussie couple trying to kick covid where it hurts! 😂
@@KristinasTravels haha I don’t even know how many sailing hours you are from our harbors but the covid situation is improving here. Keep kicking and hope covid will end soon for everyone. Sailing is the perfect way to social distance at least. Enjoy the beautiful other side of the globe where you guys are.
Keep your course, they need your path to be predictable and they will do the rest. Moving and trying to dodge them disturbs them even more. They are the ones watching you, not the other way around!!!
Hey mate, thanks for the tip, this is what most people have told us, although I’m curious if it’s not unlike animals on the road (dogs, kangaroos, etc), rarely do they seem to understand you’re following a road/straight path and often end up startled and right in front of you.. for the time being we are only adjusting course, as little as needed, if there’s any serious concern they aren’t going to move of consistently appear on the route with no sign of movement as we get closer. It’s worked so far but would be good to know for sure 😆
I think with Whales is that you are in their backyard and therefore at their mercy. All you can do is hold your course. You paid your insurance premium right. I can remember a NZ yacht Snow White hitting a Whale and sinking when returning from Fiji. The crew were rescued from the life raft. Your editing is getting better and better 👍👍
Haha... yes, we definitely paid our insurance!! LOL! While I'm on board.. that's a MUST! 😂 I got rope burn on my hand today... 😳 the headsail furl came off the winch while under load and I went to grab it.... never again. 😭 and do you know what.. re: your story about whales..... BA, the delivery skipper who was in Skyfall (the yacht in front of us).. he told us a story.. when he was doing the Sydney to Hobart yacht race a few years back, they believe they hit a whale, and lost their rudder, it created a massive hole in their hull, and they had to keep throwing clothes and whatever they had on board, and the force was just sucking all their clothes into the water.. they couldn't stop it.. and yes.. the yacht suck and they had to be rescued.. so I was def scarred by this story and was visualising this happening to us!!!!! Dramatic perhaps, but also possible?! Thanks for your editing comment too.. I spent.. like 3 days + editing this one... so, MUCH LOVE to you!!! ❤️ Cheers!
Awsome as always, It should be interisting going back down this year(if any of us can) as the humpbacks are so numerous and tend to be much more active on the return trip. We run our engine especially at night but it may be a case if wearing a necklace to stop the sky from falling on your head. BTW spotted you guys on AIS, your location is awsome. Take care and keep the vids coming.
Hey Derek, that’s interesting about the whales, and running your engine at night, makes sense, would be pretty hard to miss that. Thanks mate, nice to be up here. Where are you guys now?
Hi John, I could be completely wrong about running the engine at night, just my best guess. I know from diving that the Southern Rights move away from noise but the show off humpbacks and sometimes inquisitive calves are a bit unpredictable and will occasionaly approach you. I finally got the gearbox fixed the day before the border shut so we are still in Coffs, bet you guys are happy not to be in Melbourne right now. Watch out for those sudden wind bullets up there, its an awsome spot. Keep the vids coming have to get our fix somewhere.
@@derekhickey1that’s pretty interesting, looking forward to seeing them with their calves on the way back down. Oh no! You’re kidding! What a bummer, sorry to hear you’ve got caught up with the border closures, but good news you’re back in action with the gearbox : ) Thanks for the heads up about the bullets, it’s certainly way windier here then just a short distance to the south! Glad you like the videos, hope to see you guys north if the border sometime soon : )
Hi Kristina and John, Thanks again for sharing your adventure. I would have been anaphylactic and definitely agree with you waking up poor John. 😂 keep up the great vlogs and safe travels.
Haha 😆 Ohhhh - I’m not the only one!!!! Thank goodness for that! I started thinking to myself.... am I made for the seas?! Am I the only one po💩p‘ing my pants right now?! They’re so much bigger in real life too... 😳
@@KristinasTravels Bahaha absolutely. You know how do you say it quietly. Soft voice “ Ah John there’s thousands of whales surrounding our boat “ I’d have a fog horn attached to my jacket that would wake the dead. Lol Yes whales and shipping containers floating around very scary. You guys are doing great! If we could we’d all be sailing away from land and lockdowns. Enjoy guys and can’t wait to see what’s next. 😘🥰
We sailed a Dufour 385 from Newcastle to Hamilton island 4 times in peak whale season. Our rule was to run the engine at night even if just idling during sailing. If a whale appeared in front turn to try and keep about 100 metres away. We never had a close encounter they keep away.
If ever I get the chance to sail up close to whales, I would cut my speed to the minimum with regard to maintaining a heading that i needed to continue my journey, not heard of whales avoiding sailboats before. If you hit one hard it could do a lot of damage to your keel. So i guess common sense should apply just to be safe, reduce sail and try and avoid the pod. Good luck on your journey, stay safe and away from crowds while ashore. Covid is going to be here for a very long time everywhere in the world..
Hey Bob, I tend to agree about trying to slow down and avoid the pod. I think expecting whales to know where you’re headed and to move won’t always work. A bit like expecting animals to understand you’re following a road while driving, unfortunately it seems most of them get startled and end up right in front of you. The skipper we followed up told us a story of how the boat he was on in a Sydney to Hobart hit a whale and caused so much damage they had to abandon the boat. Can’t imagine the poor whale coming off best in that scenario either. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts 🙂👌🏻
Sailing North...err umm why do whales go north...just asking for a friend...LOL Solar Panel antics had me thinking., then realised was adhesion assistance. Love you guys Cheers.
Haha! Yes, some super strong adhesion assistance 😂😉❤️ It was this super strong double sided sticky foam that was recommended to us by the RV guys who sold us the panels! Interesting but the panel is still stuck on there, to this day!
Not a marine biologist but been lucky enough to swim with whales a few times. I reckon give them a bit of room to do whale stuff. We’re just guests in their realm….
Hi Guys, Just watch the video, what a wonderful time you guys are having. Can you please don’t tell people about Pittwater as it’s such a great sailing area and the more you say about it the more will come . LOL Any way what a great filling, you Went though Port Philip heads one of the most dangerous waterways in the World then come into one of the Great Harbours of the world.
Well you're in luck.. because I'm just about to start editing next weeks episode!!! 😂😂 Shall I just skip it?! No, but seriously.. you may want to un-subscribe (this will be the only time you'll hear me say this... 🤓) because you're going to be PISSED this time next week.. because you're right... Pittwater is heaven on earth!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Haha! I hope you can forgive us!! ⛵️
I am no expert but quite a few whales are hit in shipping lanes which makes me think they don’t always get out of the way so moving seemed like your best bet. So glad everyone was ok though xx
For all your power needs you would have been better off with Lithium Iron batteries as they are far better with regards to discharge level (able to go lower than Lead Acid). I do feel that you should have had some sailing lessons, as you would have had a better knowledge in sailing and handling issues as they arose, due to the training. Kristina you have a great challenge ahead and the sea, weather and mother nature is not to be taken lightly.
Very nice but here is some constructive criticism. You don't have to explain the obvious. Like why you need batteries! Everybody over the age of four will probably connect those dots by themselves. Anyway looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Haha thanks for your support and feedback. 🙌 I had no idea before ‘boat life’, so I thought some people may be interested too. Cheers for the support 🧡🧡
You are not a journalist anymore to use obviously over exaggerated titles to make the headlines. What do you mean you don't know what to do? DO NOTHING!!! Do you really think that there should be a traffic police to direct whales or boats at see so that they don't collide? Just keep your course, that animal is definitely smarter that you (all of us btw) in its natural habitat. You DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING! I thought this was common sense!!! Anyway...love your videos though...just stop ever sensationalizing things like journalists always do!!!
Agree, chill woman😉 It’s not commercial tv anymore it’s your life now. Bring on the natural Aussie banter and you will be killing it. Fair winds and be safe

1. How many people in the world have actually seen the ocean in person?
2. How many of those people have actually had the wonderful pleasure of being out on the open ocean? (raises hand)
3. Of those few fortunate individuals that have been on the open ocean, how many have seen whales up close (or closer than comfortable)?
Moral of the story; where there is danger, there is also much beauty. You have experienced something that few have and most never will.
Good on you mates.
Wow. THAT IS A POWERFUL comment Brian. ❤️ Chills!
Thanks for putting things into perspective ☺️☺️
Cheers as always! 🙌
@@KristinasTravels Thank you for the kind words.
Awesome, you saw whales! Love your editing, great video as always! 👍
So manyyyyyyy! 🐳
Aww, thank you! This kind of love inspires us to make the next one, so keep the good vibes coming. 🤩🤩🤩 Hope you’re having an amazing week 🤍
Loving your videos, thank you! We are about 2.5 years behind you x
Fantastic latest episode - always enjoy the energy you guys bring - loved the close encounters with the whales
Great adventure! What about a wind turbine to supplement the solar and batteries? Can charge whilst you're on the move and at night.
Great to follow you! Hi from the Netherlands 👋👋
Living the dream...congrats!!!
Thanks for the love legend!! ❤️❤️❤️
Really enjoying watching - you are so entertaining!
You deserve more views! Your editing is awesome --- the videos, the voice over...everything!
Thanks so much 🥺☺️🥰 means so much. Lots more adventure to come! Thanks for being here for the journey x
I look forward to your yacht trip every week in the romantic and beautiful video created by a wonderful couple.
Oh, thank you so much! So glad you love them. ❤️ We really appreciate it! 🙌
and do you know what.. re: your story about whales.....
❤️ Cheers!
Great stuff guys looks like you had a whale of a time
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love a good pun. 👏🙌
What a bummer, sorry to hear you’ve got caught up with the border closures, but good news you’re back in action with the gearbox : )
Thanks for the heads up about the bullets, it’s certainly way windier here then just a short distance to the south!
Glad you like the videos, hope to see you guys north if the border sometime soon : )
Just joined the Chanel. What an experience very brave to just do it. Life is short, live without regrets. Stay safe 🙏👌
Such a cute and fun sailing couple. I love following you guys. Some times you act like two kids in a candy store.
Nice video Kristina 👍
Thanks so much Citrine Sunset!!! 🌅 Glad you enjoyed it! 😃
Great vid! I am new to your channel and enjoy very much. I see John does not talk much, is he camera shy?
Try your depth sounder or play Jimmy Buffet on the stereo.
12:38 wow that boat was so close to a collision twice.
Very cool vlog. Nice to meet you from Indonesia. Be healthy.
God bless you
and your family
Straight back at you! ❤️
Hi Guys,
Just watch the video, what a wonderful time you guys are having.
Can you please don’t tell people about Pittwater as it’s such a great sailing area and the more you say about it the more will come . LOL
Any way what a great filling, you Went though Port Philip heads one of the most dangerous waterways in the World then come into one of the Great Harbours of the world.
@@KristinasTravels what a great reply, and looking forward to the next week’s video. LOL
I am no expert but quite a few whales are hit in shipping lanes which makes me think they don’t always get out of the way so moving seemed like your best bet. So glad everyone was ok though xx
I think they are surprised of how fast (25 kn) the ships are moving
Lol WHALES we dont get them much here in Florida
For all your power needs you would have been better off with Lithium Iron batteries as they are far better with regards to discharge level (able to go lower than Lead Acid).
I do feel that you should have had some sailing lessons, as you would have had a better knowledge in sailing and handling issues as they arose, due to the training.
Kristina you have a great challenge ahead and the sea, weather and mother nature is not to be taken lightly.
Hello! like the videos.
Hey! Oh that’s fantastic to hear! Thank you for being here and your support. Means so much. ❤️❤️❤️
Just hold your course around whales. They work the water better than us
Beautiful!
They're amazing 🐳 aren't they!! ❤️⛵️
@@KristinasTravels them and the video... Love it... Stunning! Thank you!
Is it my imagination or is John looking more comfortable in front of the camera? 😊
Yes!!! TBH though, I think John has just figured out it’s easier to give in! 🤣🤣🤣😄😄😂😂😂🙏💁♀️
Maybe, possibly.... a little tiny bit Steve 😅😆
@@jptilley10 well if I’m was right, it was very nice to see 😊
Very nice but here is some constructive criticism.
John, stay strong mate….
First?
SURE ARE!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
☝👆
Sorry, i'm not a greenie, but i think you were in the whales path.
If a whale suddenly appears you harpoon it and buy a bigger esky.cheers Mike
😂 🎣 we’re going to need a bigger rod
Your yacth model?
Hey there! Our yacht is a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 50DS 😀 year: 2008
The government let the D strain in from India, now we suffer from their incompetance.
Bilge
USE THE MF SAILS. BORING.
