The hot rod and custom community is dying off. Young people see cars as appliances. They don't seem to understand what the car community is all about. We need to find a way to get more young people into cars. There's a younger guy (30's) who works with me at the body shop. He said that if a car is older than him, then he doesn't need to work on it. That really hit me. Because the best cars were made before he was born.
The problem is that all the "young people" have all been bunched up with that same stereotype that none of us care about the old cars. As a 17 year old with a 55 Chevy, 59 Studebaker and 62 Rambler who also knows of a ton of other young guys with classic cars, I can confirm that that is not true.
Well the enormous cost of ownership plays a big part. Insurance alone is deal breaker for many young people. I know young people in their 30's who don't even have a driver's license. Not a rare situation anymore. Of course with modern cars fixing them yourself is problematic. I've got a good story where an old timer mechanic thought he new what was wrong with my car, he was positive, he was wrong. It was some sort of computer issue🙄. It's no wonder young people view cars the way they do.
I'm 30 yrs and I think I missed the golden age of cars to be honest, I'd love to be able to tune a carb or work on engine timing, but I feel like there are too few places to learn about it anymore, I guess I'm the opposite of your guy.
@ D.A.L. You must not know very many young people to generalize like that. I see many at races and car shows and even on TH-cam, that like older cars, and even like older music. Don't give up on them yet!
I looked at that car and am amazed at how they managed to finish the molding work between the rear fender and the lower door hinge. There isn't much room in there to work.
Gear shift is upside down. I wonder if that’s intentional. I can’t imagine someone drilling the hole for that ball like that. In fact, I would assume they would want the “3” up top.

It's incredible he has owned that car for so long. Most guys myself included own a car a few years then sell it on and buy something else.

Built like an old East Coast (US) style hot rod with the wild channel and no chop top but with the full fenders it is really unique

I see in the picture from 1958 it has the same hub caps that I had on my first car, a 1955 Ford hardtop.
The rear fenders have been moved up to the top of the trunkline.
Chop tops were the thing back when but I like the non chop top.
That is a really cool job on the channel 8 inches is a lot I bet it's something to put on a lift or even a four post great job👍😎💯👌
