The 450 and up(2wd) trans with the E-brakes are a 4x4 ZF5 with a e-brake attached. So to use it in a 250/350 you could either A, unbolt the e-brake and use it in a 4x4 truck, B, keep the e-brake and use it in a 2wd, or C, unbolt the e-brake, install a t-case and use it in a 2wd truck(this would give you a low-range, and the possibility for a front axle swap later). Other good bits of info: 1. 460 bell housing can be modified to fit a 7.3 IDI or PSD using a hand drill and a template from the back of a 7.3 IDI. 2. A 92 and up truck can take any ZF5; the speedo hole can be just ignored or blocked off as the speedo uses the ring gear in the rear axle instead.
@@dylansmith3628 Yes, 4wd zf5s have no speedo hole, the speedo is off of the t-case. You will need a t-case from something pre 1992 or so; after that, they use the rear diff tone ring for the speedo signal.
@@dylansmith3628 The ZF5's went from ZF S5-42 to ZF S5-47 somewhere during the 90s. all are compatible however, as long as the bellhousing matches your engine. 7.3 psd and 7.3 idi bellhousings are the same, and the 7.5l gas bellhousing uses the same casting, with smaller bolt holes.
Good transmissions There is a wide ratio and close ratio. I swapped a 97 powerstroke diesel into my 460 93 using the original trans which was the wide ratio .
@The F-series Can the tailshaft be taken off the ZF5 with the trans in the truck or will it have to be removed? I have a 96 F350 and the tailshaft broke, I'm going to see if I can find one in a junkyard, will any of the tailshaft from the ZF5's work if it's a 4x4 tailshaft? I'd like to find a whole trans and keep mine for spare parts but I'm not sure I want to throw that much extra money out or not. What's a fair price for a 4x4 ZF5 from a later year OBS 7.3 Diesel at a yard? Thanks, hopefully you see this! Thanks for the video btw, great to see some info put out there to the world.
Im sure you already figured it out, but if you haven’t. You need to pull the trans. All the internals are coming out with the tail shaft as it’s all on the front case. Good luck finding a tail shaft as well. You’ll need to find an s5-47 tail shaft. I only ever see the s5-42’s. 47’s are beefier.
I wish I still had my 1994 F250HD with the 300 6 and the ZF 5 speed. It would have been better if it had been a 4 wheel drive. Now I’d love to find a 92-97 F250HD crew cab 4x4 single rear wheel.
No The 351w uses the smallblock bellhousing pattern like a 302 460/7.3 bolt patternsare close enough you can use a 460 trans on a 7.3 with some drilling of the bolt holes
I have 1976 f250 4x4 "High boy" (auto trans) 390 motor. Donor truck 1990 f250 2wd (manual trans) 351w motor. Can I swap manual transmission from 1990 to 1976 High boy?
With an adapter, sure. 390FE and 351w has different bolt patterns A work around is a NV4500 transmission and an adapter from www.AdvanceAdapters.com (NOT sponsored by AA, just a reference)
Hey hope you don't mind but I've done these before and did a how to article on swapping on my ol 97 F350 from a slush box to a hand shaker. www.patrickthesalvageguy.com/article_read.asp?title=7%2E3+E4OD%28automatic%29+to+ZF5%28manual%29+conversion+94%2E5%2D97+OBS+F250%2FF350+7%2E3L+PowerStroke&item=13 What I want to do next time is throw a Allison MD3060 in a F350, that would be an awesome bulletproof setup since those trans were for trucks up in the 40k GVWR range, I've got one in a bus with the 7.3 T444E in it, they are slick with the built in retarder. Good video bud.

Correct!
My biggest annoyance has been not having a speedometer because I used a 1997 ZF (didn't know until I bought it)
I wonder if you can use a zf5 4x4 model I heard they have the speedo hole on the transfer case

Thank you do you know of a 1992 zf5 will bolt in to a 1990 and if there is any issues with a swap like that or would it bolt up ?

You could add a tone ring on the back axle, or drill and tap the hole in the trans then add the gear to drive the speedo.

How? Aren’t bolt pattern different between 7.3 and 460
I’m in the process of doing the same thing. Only for a 96 F150 with 4.9 liter !
Hey, Im thinking of doing the same thing, how'd that go?

eBay. But brother will you pay for it. Its easier to find a '57 Chevy or '66 Mustang than it is an '80's or '90's anything.
I accidentally bought a ZF5 42 for my 1996 F250 7.3 turbo, Is this critical?
I'm doing the swap solid flywheel or dual mass
great video
When you swap from an auto to a manual does space plate/adapter stay the same or is it different
Spacer that holds the starter stays the same
Will a 1987 f-250 6.9 zf5 4x2 will fit behind a 92 f-150 351w with a E4OD Thanks
No
The 351w uses the smallblock bellhousing pattern like a 302
460/7.3 bolt patternsare close enough you can use a 460 trans on a 7.3 with some drilling of the bolt holes
Exelent info I’m swapping my 99’ f450 auto to stick; I hate my auto trans!!!
I have a 1995 f250 2wd 7.3 ... if i buy a zf547 4x4 will it still fit the engine ?... I'm doing a swap in my 1983 f350 ... buy it's a 4x4
Hey I f350 460 with a zf5 in it that’s bad I went an bought a zf5 that came out of f350 7.3 what do I need to do to get the 7.3 zf5 to bolt my 460
Not sure; I know on the 460 to 7.3 swap it involves elongating a couple of the bell housing bolt holes
does the ZF 5 bolt to a 351M? Thank you
There are small block zf5, diesel zf5, and big block 460 zf5

Will ZF Ecomat fit?
I need the transmission yoke do you have it by any chance?
I do not.
Wish i watched this before i dropped $420 on the wrong trans
speedo works off rear axle sensor
Depends on the year.
80-97 does far as i knew. tho i guess 91 and older does have a cable driven speedo
My 92 is using rear axle sensor
Necesito una de caregato
I need a flywheel dust cover for one
Oh, I always delete those on my trucks. Never had a problem. I really like being able to *see* what's happening down there.
Like MacRobb said, I usually didn't put them back on mine either, wish I would have saw this earlier, I was cleaning out my shop and threw 2 away.....
swap the axle to one with a speedo if u want one so bad or get a gps speedo

No problems with having more info available!
Transfer case
Man I wouldn’t be able do drive a truck with unlogged miles that’s against my religion
I don't like it but it is what it is..
I'm tentatively planning a 4X4 swap, ap hopefully when that happens I can correct this issue
GPS speedometer
