Death Cab for Cutie with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at The Hollywood Bowl, July 5, 2009
I came upon the videos of this concert and was immediately sad that I wasn't there to witness this amazing performance. I found myself watching all the different videos people had uploaded. Finally I decided that there needs to be one, combined video of this performance--so that's what I did.
I thought it'd be so cool to see the performance from the perspectives of the real fans that were all over the concert, sharing the experience together.

This is an amazing effort. Our work literally "goes up in smoke" after many days, sometmes weeks of effort and to see it saved like this is very rewarding. For years I have watched these shows from someplace soundproof and never knew how the audience reacted. Then along came TH-cam. Thank you to all of the fans who posted videos of our work, and especially to you for taking the time and effort to put them all together like this. And if DCFC ever wants fireworks again, just call us.
I wonder how long it will take me to be able to watch this without crying.

the fireworks just gave the song an even more emotional, haunting sensation to it.

I flew from Kansas to be at this show when I was 27 and it will forever be a top 5 moment in my life... I'm glad you got to experience it too

This is the best concert performance I have ever seen. I love the song but holy shit, the philharmonic and the fireworks timed to perfection. I have never been to any concert with that kind of vibe and I never will again
I saw this two years ago for the first time. I said it then and I'll say it again, this is the best live concert music video ever produced. Mr. Tucker has shown how future concert perspectives should be handled. By giving us many vantage points to experience the show, we are drawn into the communal nature of what a great rock concert is all about. I hadn't revisited this is a while, but it still just knocks me out. Perhaps, Mr. Tucker will do me the pleasure of editing a New Pornographers video some day.
I'm honored that you think so highly of it! I think you summed it up really nicely, the idea of watching a concert from the many vantage points of the actual audience got me really excited and I hoped I would see other people start doing similar things. I've always intended to do it again for another show. I don't know the New Pornographers, but I'll check them out. I also just got tickets to see DCFC at Hollywood Bowl this year...so fingers crossed they do fireworks again! Then a new video may be in order...

Watch from the beginning but pay attention around 4:55 and listen to the guy who begins yelling what sounds like "everything is alive"... Such emotion in his voice. Just some inherent magic about being in a group like that, all vibing to the same music, all that happiness of everyone gathered together compounded in one space at one moment in whatever time is... How it reminds you of how absolutely vibrant we can be...
Seriously, who dislikes this? Transatlanticism, an orchestra backing, fireworks in unison, great compilation editing. What else do you want?!?!
I was at this show, and it remains one of my favorite memories of my young-adult life, hands down. The hollywood bowl - with the hollywood sign int he background, it was about 75 degrees, the stars were out, and Ben Gibbard's sweet voice echoing off the hills.... oh man it was epic.
I am so lucky to have been at this show. Watching this video brings back the shivers that I felt seeing it live.
Jesus that was amazing.. I had no idea that show ever happened.. I would have given anything to have been there... Thank you so much for posting this! I have seen Death Cab live 2 times now and always look forward to this song as their final encore.. I also always get chills towards the end of the song when Jason McGerr slowly builds up to totally attacking the drums like a wild man...
Each year it seems I come back to visit this testament of how to close out a gig! If I haven’t said it before…”Thank you to all involved for putting together and sharing this incredible display of musical passion.”It comforts me knowing others feel just as strongly about the power of music.
Thank you so much, you're too kind! I'm really glad you enjoy this, and that this video has connected with people. I wanted so badly to be there once I saw all these videos that people had posted, so this was kind of my way of trying to live the experience. It took a long time to put together, but it was completely worth it. And I do hope that more of these videos happen.

Played vitamin string quartet instrumental as my wife walked down the aisle at our wedding and such great heights as we walked back after we said “I do”

I wish this was direct audio out.. only thing that would make this epic performance even better. This song was made to be performed like this. Absolutely incredible. I cry every time i watch it.

I was incredibly fortunate enough to be at this show on vacation from Kansas to California solo for no other reason basically then this show. I really think it was fate that I would be there that night and the minute that first firework went up will forever be a top 5 moment in my life. Take chances in life when given the opportunity and seize moments, I had a number of friends and family say it was crazy for me to go out there for a week alone but I'm so grateful that I did.
How was this not officially released? Did they not film it? Astounding.
this concert was incredible. 4th of july 2009 @ the hollywood bowl. Tegan and Sara opened and something pornographers, the fireworks show along with the LA philharmonic put this whole show way over the top. it was absolutely breathtaking.

Was there with an ex-girlfriend. Once upon a time. Long ago. It was everything you think it was. A few months later we drove to a local park and broke up. I drove her home while we didn't speak and listened to this song on the radio.

This is the best live performance I've ever seen, the fireworks, orchestra, crowd, setting, song, band among many things. Thankfully you were able to put together the pieces and preserve some of the magic.

I just had to comment on this wonderfully edited video of DCFC! My god! this was probably the best concert I've been to. The addition of the Philharmonics was just genius, I still get chills watching this video. I was sitting in the front about 20 feet from the stage. Although, we didn't get to see the fireworks looking back at all the camera flashes became our very own fireworks show! AMAZING! GOOD JOB!
Almost as amazing as being here in person. The energy there during this finale was incredible.

CptGabok, this is how all future concert videos should be shown. This is really revolutionary. No hyperbole, this how concerts, especially in larger venues should be shown. I was there with extraordiary seats and this is the best perspective. I especially love the shots with people silhouetted in the forground. Just amazing. I am sharing it with everyone and I can't stop playing it.

I'll be honest, I wasn't all that familiar with Death Cab or their music when I filmed this show, but by the end of this song I was in tears...and it wasn't just the band and the orchestra, it was certainly the impact of the fireworks contributing to the crescendo and the intense emotional impact of the moment. People all around me were wiping away tears when the song ended, and your work helped to make that finale an unbelievable

Am also taken with some of Death Cab for Cutie's tracks.. So this brought it all together for me. Mahoosive heads up to you for taking the time to edit this. the fireworks made it so much more romantic. Now I can't stop imagining seeing DCFC live, playing transatlanticism, with the person I like, holding hands with him, then there goes the fireworks.

this is amazing. and i keep coming back to it. i must have watched it 3 or 4 times now and it brings tears to my eyes every time. but i really wish you had used cross dissolves in this though. the cuts are totally killing the mood. i mean, if you watch the live screen, they're even used dissolves.

I was there!! My first Death Cab For Cutie concert. It was amazing. :)
Furthermore, the bill was The New Pornographers (without Neko Case, she was touring her solo album). Tegan and Sara and Death Cab. All the acts were terrific and song for song The New Pornographers were the best, but only played or a half an hour. But Transatlanticism with the LA Philharmonic was fantastic. But the editing of the video is remarkable. I can't praise it enough. Awesome stuff. I want to be able to do this.
