Good call. I taught high school English as well. I used Bruce Springsteen some. Let my students bring in the lyrics of a song they liked under the condition that it had clean lyrics. They had to analyze their song. Once everyone shared, we'd listen to all songs which became the soundtrack for that class. It helped teach poetry. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up among people like Jackie. Luckily, I found education & a career. Now retired from the fire dept., for the past 5 years I've been able to collect large quantities of clothing for the homeless. I say this not for praise, but to illustrate that EVERY PERSON can do something, even if it's only a little. Mellencamp, in this song, gave me the inspiration I needed to begin my efforts, & for that I'm forever grateful- tears & thanks, John!

Well done to you. Some of us simply get a nice call of the dice when we're born. It saddens me to see many in need. Australia is called the lucky country but for some it's very hard and unfair. I heard this song after so many years I'd almost forgotten it. A great song but it brings tears to my eyes.

This is beautiful and I love so many of his works, but for me Hotdogs and Hamburgers. I love the way the song builds, it feels like an organic jamming session, as if they're on the porch, people keep turning up with more instruments and joining in, the tune just gets bigger and bigger.... love it. Not forgetting the poignant lyrics. Only Mellencamp could write a seriously profound social commentary as upbeat as that.

I purchased this album on cassette when it was released, I have since lost those cassettes. At the local vinyl store I purchased this album as an LP. It is probably twenty five years plus since I have heard this song. Although the song was impressive years ago, as a person of advancing years this song has new life in me. It is the purity of the lyrics, they had always been pure, but now resonate more than ever. The music is also outstanding. John is an American treasure, I only wonder the hardship he endured to write music with such poignancy? In the quiet of the night this song now haunts me.

I never gave Mellencamp his due; about a week ago the song "Human Wheels" popped into my head and I TH-camd it. Then I got to "Authority Song" and "Rain on the Scarecrow" and started to realize I had been missing out. I was a kid in the eighties, and while I didn't dislike his music, I had no idea of its depth and quality. When I grew up I kind of forgot all about him. Anyway, I continued listening to most of his hits this week and was just in awe of his craft. Now with this one I guess you could say I'm getting into the deep cuts-- songs a casual listener wouldn't know. And this is gorgeous and heartbreaking.
What an absolutely phenomenal songwriter. I'm starting to think he deserves a place next to Bob Dylan or whatever American songwriter you put at the top of the heap. So, so good. How did it take me this long to notice?

It was never "cool" to like Jonn Mellencamp as Mellencamp himself said once, and he started off his career quite slowly and was dismissed by critics early on which didn't help. Take the time now though and go through everything he has produced, up through his recent records, and I think you may be surprised at the depth and quality of his catalogue. Yes, he ranks up there with the best as far as writing beautiful melodies and reaching people on a certain emotional level.

I’ve said it once ill say it again, the reason this doesn’t get the recognition it deserves is cause it’s much easier to live knowing this is life but we have more important things to do. So sad when so many need more than you. Radio was all but silent when this came out in my area( shitcago).one of the absolute ugly truths.

Don't you realize that Jackie Brown is not a man, he's a soul...and for all those of us who possess a soul...the ugly truth is that in the end we are all Jackie Brown, man, woman...it doesn't matter...

I feel like Jackie Brown. I had everything until 2001 and then a mental illness destroyed my mind. Many probably think I am a Jackie Brown, but that wasn't always the case.

+Doug Collier, mental illness is a horrible affliction. And the stigma that accompanies it can often make it much much worse. Get well, my friend. If there's one thing life has taught it's that everything in life is temporary. It may not seem that way but it is. Take care.

Well we finally did it folks. "Jackie Brown" had reached 1 million views. Although I fear it's message has reached us too late. So many well off people just don't know how it feels to struggle. Not know how that next car payment or light bill will get paid..it's a stress I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

The simplicity and beauty of this song pack an emotional punch of epic proportions! John has a way of taking the plight of middle America and giving it a voice. John has always been a star but in this song he becomes a superstar. This song is right up there with Paper In Fire, Rain on the Scarecrow, and Freedom's Road. Absolutely stellar.

    "Jackie Brown"
Is this your life, Jackie Brown?
Poorly educated and forced to live on the poor side of town.
Is this your daughter, Jackie Brown?
    This pretty little girl
    In the worn out clothes
    That have been hand-me down.
Is this your wife, Jackie Brown?
With sad blue eyes, walking on eggshells so you don't see her frown.
Is this your family, Jackie Brown?
Dream of vacationing on a mountain stream
And giving the world more than it gave you.
    What ugly truths freedom brings
And it hasn't been very kind to you.
Is this your life, Jackie Brown?
Is this your meal, Jackie Brown?
Barely enough, I've seen people throw away more than this out.
Is this your home, Jackie Brown?
    This three room shack
    With no running water
    And the bathroom out back.
Is this your grave, Jackie Brown?
This little piece of limestone that says another desperate man took himself out.
Is this your dream, Jackie Brown?
    Going nowhere and nowhere fast
We shame ourselves to watch people like this live.
But who gives a damn about Jackie Brown?
Just another lazy man who couldn't take what was his.
    One helluva life Jackie Brown.
    Forevermore, Jackie Brown
Amen and amen - Jackie Brown?

I always thought this was about Jack from “Jack and Diane”. His life didn’t turn out like he wanted as so many poor rural peoples life sometimes do. Jackie no longer a teenager never leaves town and falls in to a life of despair. Diane long gone is but a memory that he drinks away every night. Can’t feed his kids , the pain becomes to much and he takes his life. A sad ending for all of the promise that Jack and Diane had as teenagers.
