Because the anjin was also a real person and was represented accurately based on a novel written about him... Yasuke was not a samurai. We dont know how the story or events of the game will portray him though so most people are arguing out of concern because of how other companies do things.

I disagree, i see your perspective though for sure but i'd argue that forced diversity is just as a bad as racism. For example black panther was a great movie but on the chinese poster disney decided hide the actors face. these companies do not care about race or diversity unless its profitable. theyre literally using diversity to their benefit and will fold on it the moment it loses them money. (maybe assassins creed is different tho)
I don’t think people hate black people by saying that it’s a weird choice of main character, especially when people disagree of the status of said character. I personally would feel weird if an Asian played the main character in a Viking game or a white person as the main character of a black history game.
Also people play these games to experience a specific romanticised era and they don’t want to be taken out of said experience by having a main character that goes against the norms of the time and place.
It’s not racism. Well maybe from some people. But this is the first AC set in Japan. If the first African set AC game had a white main character in a lot people would be mad AF. And they wouldn’t care if it was a historically accurate white character either. The whole reason people look at it through this lens is because the increase of the cultural appropriation talk over the years that primarily came from a specific group. A lot of people are inconsistent and hypocritical. If everyone just enjoyed stories and media for what they were it wouldn’t be an issue. This type of talk didn’t start here.

The ACTUAL reason for this game though that it is so triggering is far more complex then those defending it try to make it. It is a cumulation of things.
1 - First off, there has been a trend of wokeness genuinely ruining game franchises by twisting them into things they completely arent. For example, world of warcraft becoming a 'the power of friendship and working together' game from the WAR craft it was meant to be. Often it is fine if it is a series that is about that, but they try to force it on any and every series. Even warhammer, one of the most dark and fked up for the fun of cool/metalness is getting invaded for woke inclusive stuff when the series is notoriously about bad guys all about the opposite. It is annoying, and just pushes people to be against the inclusiveness and equality rather than support it considering it is the cause fking up things they enjoy.
2 - Then you have the blatantly obviousness as to WHY they chose the time period, and the characters they went with. A women which is fine if done right but it is japan, not the best location and time period for them. Then the singular black dude in history of japan before more modern times... It just makes it another obvious wokeness push. Annoying, just default to being against it. Most of it seems to actually just be about gaining MORE favor and fking over white men, wonder why white dudes would be against it, Crazy. Even though genuinely woman and minorities have had it far better in the last 10-20+ years thanks to all the supporting systems put in place to support them compared to white dudes...
3 - One of the biggest for me, and I am sure many others is that the potential is being wasted in favor of woke political propaganda... This is a setting that many have wanted for ages in this franchise with how much sense it makes for assassins and ninjas. We could have had famous people like Hanzo, either playing as him or a supporting character in his ninja clan just to name one example. heck, because it is ninja, even female characters would be fine. They had kunoichi. Instead they go for woke. All this wait, all this hope for this setting and they use it for a springboard of woke politics... We just want fun games that make sense with their settings that aren't forced with some fkers political point of view thrust in our face. Kinda hard to not see that forcing in a setting that is nearly all japanese + male dominated during that time period, and the 2 characters they choose are the single black dude and a woman. Straight up if it was just a kunoichi, I wouldn't have really cared. I think it genuinely got worse and more obvious in your face because they had both....

I was happy with the protagonists of Origins, Liberation, and Freedom Cry (All characters of African descent). But wanting a fictional Japanese man playable in Japan is racist and asking too much?

Sengoku era has a hundred year history and instead of creating the male protagonist like every other game, Ubisoft inserted a real life foreigner who was there for about 3 years. Not as a cool supporting role like DaVinci, Cleopatra, or Blackbeard, but one of the main playable characters.

Yasuke is a retainer to Nobunaga Oda (Daimyo), he was given stipend, house, and sword. He was basically a samurai.

People don’t understand how racist these other countries can be too sometimes because for you to be mad a American game franchise chose to add lore that many of us would know besides the Japanese culture shows they don’t even want to appreciate they even have a game being made for them. You want your own characters, your own story, your own this and that. Make the game yourself or go play ghost of Tsushima or some shit like let them make the game and play it if you like it. I skipped like 4 AC games because it wasn’t fun anymore and I still look out for a new one but this beginning the drama instead of the gameplay shows it’s racism. Mirage had a shitty preorder and so did the last 3 before that but no mass dislike ratio? The pre order bundle had a lot and as you can see it also has a season pass so it seems the game is going to have a lot to offer not sure if it’s worth 130 though but I’m glad they have the excuses around the racism never can be brave with it what a shame.
Edit: my bad I wrote a lil paragraph but this coming from a long time AC fan I used to play 1 - unity after that I didn’t like syndicate and the other too much but I played them a bit. そして日本のゲーム雑誌のインタビューで、UBIの開発プロデューサーは「史実を基に忠実に再現した日本。ゲームを遊びながら日本史を学べます」と発言しています。
なので、日本ではこれはフィクションではない！という販売方法に否定的なのです。

Simple, AC is fictional fantasy. They generally stick to a historical setting and accuracy, but add a twist for the fun sake of having a secret war in the shadows throughout history. Those magical artifacts being generally the tool for why the war is happening. It is a real world history with a fantasy conspiracy underneath. At least that is usually generally how it has come off until they started going woke...
Most AC settings have had reasonable representation. This one was just too obviously a woke agenda with using a female and one of very few black males from japanese history, and even supposedly making them gay? Everyone wanted this setting, and it had great potential with ninja/assassins using characters like hanzo and even kunoichi (female ninja). Instead, they say fk it all, just go full on woke and not get any of the awesome possibilities they could have went with... People are just tired of the obvious political agendas being shoved so blatantly in front of them, and fully 180 changing the series they are in...

@binroussi if you watch the game play trailer the creators of the game say the girl is the assassin character. Yasuke's character is not an assassin in this game and his character build is not based on stealth. The girl character will be the stealth based character with the hidden blade.
Basically the two characters will be built to support two different play styles to provide different experiences to the gamers.
Ngl they could've at least given AC fans a Japanese male Samurai and made Yasuke a DLC. There are many Japanese samurai that people could know about like Hojo Soun or Sanada Masayuki

Its very stupid. I get mad about making characters just for diversity as well, but that isn't the case for AC Shadows. Yasuka was badass and is a real historical figure in feudal Japan and there are many stories about him, so for that reason it won't make me less immersed when playing and exploring the world of Feudal Japan which I am sure will be extremely beautiful just like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhallas worlds were and that's something AC is very good at.
But AC has never once had a real historical figure be a mc why because a big theme of the creed is your in the shadows your name will be forgotten by the masses. And you know damn well it's for brownie points.
Was Yaskuke pretty talented yes but we know barely anything that suggested he was this legendary samurai that Ubi is claiming he irl was. He fought with a katana at Nijō Castle, so he knew something about swordsman ship.

The ACTUAL reason it is so triggering is far more complex then those defending it try to make it. It is a cumulation of things.
1 - First off, there has been a trend of wokeness genuinely ruining game franchises by twisting them into things they completely arent. For example, world of warcraft becoming a 'the power of friendship and working together' game from the WAR craft it was meant to be. Often it is fine if it is a series that is about that, but they try to force it on any and every series. Even warhammer, one of the most dark and fked up for the fun of cool/metalness is getting invaded for woke inclusive stuff when the series is notoriously about bad guys all about the opposite. It is annoying, and just pushes people to be against the inclusiveness and equality rather than support it considering it is the cause fking up things they enjoy.
2 - Then you have the blatantly obviousness as to WHY they chose the time period, and the characters they went with. A women which is fine if done right but it is japan, not the best location and time period for them. Then one of the near singular black dudes in history of japan before more modern times... It just makes it another obvious wokeness push. Annoying, makes people want to just default to being against it. Most of wokeness seems to actually just be about gaining MORE favor and fking over white men, wonder why white dudes would be against it, Crazy. Even though genuinely woman and minorities have had it far better in the last 10-20+ years thanks to all the supporting systems put in place to support them compared to white dudes SPECIFICIALLY (based on skin color that is racist btw, don't matter if it is white, black or whatever.)...
3 - One of the biggest for me, and I am sure many others is that the potential is being wasted in favor of obvious woke political propaganda... This is a setting that many have wanted for ages in this franchise with how much sense it makes for assassins and ninjas. We could have had famous people like Hanzo, either playing as him or a supporting character in his ninja clan just to name one example. heck, because it is ninja, even female characters would be fine. They had kunoichi. Instead they go for woke. All this wait, all this hope for this setting and they use it for a springboard of woke politics when they finally do it... We just want fun games that make sense with their settings that aren't forced with some fkers political point of view thrust in our face. Kinda hard to not see that forcing in a setting that is nearly all japanese + male dominated during that time period, and the 2 characters they choose are the single black dude and a woman. Straight up if it was just a kunoichi, I wouldn't have really cared. I think it genuinely got worse and more obvious in your face because they had both....
