    I'm the oldest of 5 boys. Every one of us was taught on a savage 20 gauge with the adapter. I shot my first squirrel with that 20. Now I'm re finishing it for my 5 year old grandson. Cannot find the .410 adapter though. So my dad started this tradition in 1967. All 5 of us used it. All 4 of my kids used this gun. Now my grandsons gonna use it. My fathers gone for ten years now but the memories of this gun outshine all our modern hunting and entertainment guns.

    Thanks very much for the great vid. I have a 12g one I got in a box of old ammo and reloading stuff many years ago new in it's box. I tried to chamber it in my Spanish double but it didnt seem to want to go and I didn't want to force it. After seeing your video I replaced the o ring, greased it and gave it a good push and it chambers and works perfectly in my gun. Looking forward to getting some .410 shells to try it. Now I'll have to find another one for the other barrel.

      I was 8 years old at the tiem and had no idea. I could barely hold up the old Browning model 5 and ended up on my behind and with everyoen made at me. I learned to shoot hand guns with a 44 magnum but was 13 so it was not so bad. No days they ahve all kinds of adapters for shotguns so you can shoot 44 magnum and special from a 12 ga or 45 acp, 16, 20 410 and 28 ga plus 9mm, 45 LC and .22. I even have an adapter to shoot 45 LC or .410 shotshels from a 28mm flaregun. The flaregun is an old steel and wood one.

      @@314299 I have a Hollis and Sons SxS 12 gauge with ,as far as I can make is black powder proofed, that I was considering shooting black powder loads through the Fourtenner or the Shooters Box adapters. If I can shoot modern .410 rounds through this old gun, it would be handy as joehunt wrote. Having black powder loads and modern .410 cartridges could become a little confusing. I'd only consider shooting 2 1/2" shells or even 2". What are your thoughts on this as I greatly value your advice?

    G'Day from Australia,
    I recently bought a single shot .410 Boito after shooting 12 gauges for over 50 years as well as a Savage Fourtenner so that I can fire .410 cartridges in my single barrel 12 gauge. I was wondering if I can fire .410 gauge slugs through the .410 insert.. I've assumed that it would be cylinder choke but I'd still like your advice.
    I always enjoy watching your videos as they contain plenty of clear information , whatever the subject.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    • @314299
      @314299 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greeting from Canada.
      There should be no issues in shooting slugs in the Savage 410 insert, the ones I have are just a cylinder bore and as far as I know they are all like that. Not sure what you will get for accuracy but you never know until you try. The insert barrel is long enough that you should get pretty decent speed out of any slugs you use. Best of success with your 410 shooting.
      Are there any issues getting 410 shells in Australia? They are in very short supply here at the moment.

      @@314299 Sorry to take so long in replying to your question about .410 shells availability in OZ . There have been times over the last 3 years when .410 cartridges have been hard to find. Actually, all ammo seemed to dry up and all gun shops as well as most small businesses were closed for long periods due to our (Victoria's ) COVID restrictions. We had the dubious honour of being the longest locked down city in the world! Whenever I dropped into my local gun shop ( when they were allowed to be open) I would buy a couple of boxes ( if they were on the shelf), usually a box each of 2 1/2" and 3" cartridges. Lately, supplies of .410 ammo have become reasonably stable. Here in OZ, the .410 seems to be going through something of a resurgence of popularity. It was regarded as a child's gun or snake gun but I know of a lot of adults, myself included, who have started shooting the .410 rather than the 12 gauge. I've found my little single shot Boito .410 to be a delight to carry and fine for shooting short range rabbits.
      Could I ask which length .410 cartridge you prefer for hunting small game such as rabbits--
      2 1/2 or 3"? I have a stock of both length cartridges, mostly loaded with #6 shot, although a box of #7 1/2 sneaked in somehow! I've thought I might try #4 shot in the three inch cartridge but the number of pellets in the load put me off.
      I always enjoy watching your videos, as I always learn much from them.
      Cheers,
      Steve

    • @314299
      @314299 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no.
      It would fit but there are several possible interference issues. The "host" gun would either break off the adapters extractor or it would attempt to pull the whole adapter back into the action, depending on how the adapter were indexed to the host gun's extractor.

    • @314299

      Savage only made these 12" long ones. There are companies that make short adapters that are the length of a shell and would work in a pump action. One company that makes them is "Short Lane LLC", if you buy ones for .22 Long Rifle and 380 ACP be sure to buy the ones that have rifling as the smooth bore ones are pretty useless.

      It's certainly not a Savage product if it's that long, but if it is in decent condition that is a great price. Some of the longer sub gauge inserts are not "universal" fit, so you might want to see if it fits the gun you plan on using it in.
