    I have to question Fuji UK's judgment for sending Chris the 80 f/1.7, instead of the 110 f/2 or the new 55 f/1.7. From what I've seen, the 80 seems the overall worst performing GF prime by a pretty big margin - that CA is plain unacceptable, and thankfully fixed on the 55.

    • @jukeboxjohnnie
      @jukeboxjohnnie 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Disagree completely, if youre shooting a model 55 and 110 are nowhere near as useful, I have all of them. You just need to use the 80mm at f2 to see much better images than f1.7

    • @ChrisThe1
      @ChrisThe1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@jukeboxjohnnie then change the distance to the subject. In any case that focal length is your personal preference and in no way representative of a majority of photographers. The fact that the 80 is significantly worse than the 55 and 110 on the other hand is objective

      Honestly, I agree with you. He's a influential reviewer and a different lens with better performance would help people find their way to GFX. Now lots of people may just see GFX as overly priced and not that much more than FF. The 55 would have been my choice to have him review

      @@MrBradleysharp1I'm pretty sure one review on one lens on one system will not ruin GFX in the minds of possible purchasers. You really genuinely TRULY think that people ready to spend five g's and another two or three for a lens are just gonna listen to one guy about one lens and use that for their entire decision? Mate. Please. Sit down..

      I own it. It’s a great lens. I have the 120 macro, the 35-70. Ca is gross wide open but whatever.
      Works great for me…does exactly what I need. Can’t get full body in my little studio with the 120 and the 35-70 isn’t as sharp as the primes. Autofocus is about the same as the 120 macro

    Thanks for the review. A suggestion. If you have the chance to bump into any Sigma Foveon-sensor camera, take it for a short review. There should be a lot of negatives about the camera, but my curiosity is how a base-ISO well-exposed image compares to others. It is said that its color depth is unbeatable even today.

    I’m sure this wouldn’t really be something you’d want to do Chris but it would be interesting to test some old EF lenses to see how they perform adapted to the GFX sensor and which can actually cover the whole sensor. I know some people use GFX cameras with old manual focus Minolta lenses.

      I use a Leica Summilux 50 (type 2) from the 1970s and the results are nothing short of spectacular. Yes it gets a little blurry around the edges and the CA is sometimes off the charts, but the portraits that this combination of old and new can render are dreamy - ironically they are sometimes confused with AI generated images. I guess that's a compliment...
      I've just got an adaptor for my Canon FD lenses (50/1.8, 28/2.8, 70-210/4.0) and so far the results are surprisingly good. It's a bit of fun.
      All of these lenses cover the sensor in full.
      As an aside, it's interesting to contrast these old lenses with my 32-64 GFX lens. It's technically perfect in my experience. I do have to work harder at breathing life and flare into the images I create with it but the detail that lens can resolve is mind blowing.
      I hope this is helpful or at least interesting

    With the Fujifilm 80mm f/1.7. Fujifilm wanted a really fast lens, with headline grabbing figures. It is faster than the Hasselblad 80mm f/1.9, though I think optically the Hasselblad is better.
    In the real world, the Fujifilm is a good lens. Yes, it is a little pedestrian and noisy, but generally I use it at f/2 or higher and it does a very good job.

    Though the resolution in the centre is absolutely amazing, I'd be pissed seeing this amount of fringing on a much cheaper full frame f/1.8 prime, can't even imagine spending this much money and having so much purple fringing, even with the corrections profile enabled. Depending on the scene, this can be a pain in the ass to fix in post.

    The GFX system is amazing, but definitely much, much slower than full frame cameras. Although I've been successful taking it to the NYC streets, it requires significant more effort than with my Sony a7cii and a compact wide angle lens, e.g. Sigma 24mm f/3.5. But I love the images it produces. Outside of the high resolution, I especially love the low distortion and (cropped) medium format look the GF lenses can give us.

      If you are doing street, you are using the wrong camera. If you are into Fine Art, Portraits, Fashion, or Landscapes, then get a GFX. For street, sports, wildlife, there are several choices from MFT to Full frame that will get the job done.

    I may be missing some technical aspects here, but this is why I never considered paying for a medium format system. Practically, given the kind of lenses available for medium format, it is possible to replicate almost identical images using an APS-C camera at 10% of the price of lens + camera, and with a significantly smaller and lighter package.
    If someday they make an f0.95 (or even f1.2) medium-format lens, then that kind of shallow depth of field will be impossible to replicate in full-frame, let alone APS-C format. But is that even physically possible?

  • @shang-hsienyang1284

    I wasn't expecting this lens to be this weak, to be honest. The center has to be stopped down to f/2.8 and the corners need to be stopped down to f/5.6 to obtain good results. Perhaps the 50mm f/1.2 and f/1.4 lenses from Canon, Nikon, Sigma, and Sony from a full-frame sensor could deliver better sharpness and details given similar circumstances.

    The wheel house for this camera/lens is Landscapes/Fashion/Portraiture/ Art. If you make a living in sports, street, wildlife or video buy another camera. The Porsche 718 is a piece of art, but it sucks at pulling a U-Haul trailer. So why do Fuji GFX reviewers bang on about things it was not designed to do ?

    As a Fujifilm 100S owner and a Canon R5 owner I can say that the Fuji GF lenses absolutely 100% SUCK! The only reason the images look any good is because of the 100mp sensor and it's unique image character but if you look at the GF lenses themselves they seriously need to be updated with modern lens and glass designs. Optically these GF lenses preform like lenses from the early 90's. They are simply outdated. The new Canon RF L glass easily out preforms all the lenses in the Fuji GF lineup. Fuji needs to get their act together. They need to stop developing new GFX bodies and put their efforts into modernizing the GF lens lineup. OK rant over. Really enjoy all your videos by the way. Thanks for making this one.
