I’m not sure if your drum is different, but I have a 100 round drum for one of these and I have no problem opening it and loading or unloading it even with the spring wound. All of the tension is held against the round that is presented for feed. The rounds behind it simply sit loosely until it is their turn. To unload the drum, I simply open it, remove all the cartridges except for the one holding tension, and then I grab the star/wheel with my hand and hold it in place while removing the final round. Then I simply slowly allow the spring to unwind while rotating the star by hand until it is released enough to let it go without damaging it.

Years ago, I saw a new in the factory hard case semi-auto Thomson brought to the range. Its owner opened the bolt for the 1st time and it locked open and the bolt could not be moved. There was no enlightenment found in the included documentation. He closed the case and brought it home. What a disappointment for the owner. I do not know if it ever got fired.

hi, mr the Koba 49 ‼️
i think the issue isn't the extrator that protrude, because it in every thompson it protrude and so slide in an apposit rail milled inner in the frame after the rear ejector port, infact you can see that rail clearly in two video of "forget weapons", of Ian, on the thompson28 for marines and in the m1A1, i think that in your thompson this rail is wrong very tight, therefore you have to enlarge it with a dremel , or even there isn't ( look carefully if it there is ) because the factory forgot to engrave it
    bye bye
