  • In this video we perform a swivel hub rebuild (steering knuckle rebuild) on our 2008 Suzuki Jimny Sierra, which includes replacing the front wheel bearings, knuckle bearings, air locking hub gaskets and all associated oil seals. This solves our issue with a steering wobble (AKA death wobble) of the front end. See further below in this description for full details of tools and parts used.

    very nice write-up, great job. one exception: please don't tap on the inner race of the wheel bearing when re-installing, you're gonna spall the balls. you need either to tool that extends to the diameter of the outer race, or just use the old bearing to tap the new one in. as a general rule, you want to avoid hitting any hard cemented surfaces, or you risk chipping the inner surfaces of the races or the balls.

    Why didn't you put the rubber seal on before putting hub assemble in place like you did taking the old one off after you disassembled it.

    • @2ndGearLow
      @2ndGearLow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Martine, as the new rubber knuckle seal (wiper) is cut before installing, as per the FSM, it doesn't need to be fitted over the knuckle ball before the housing and can be put on afterwards. When using seals that are a continuous ring they must be installed in the right order as they wouldn't fit over larger components such as the knuckle housing

    My Sierra had 3 different greases in the swivel hub, what looked like wheel bearing grease on the kingpin bearings, moly in the knuckle, and some type of packing grease within the housing. I also couldn't find much info about the Super A grease. In the Sierra manual Suzuki says to use this Super A grease on all these areas. I've seen other Jimny/Sierra with what looked like this 3 different grease arrangement, so I'm guessing they come from the factory like this. It looks like that grease packed in the housing is a higher viscosity/more sticky than the moly and is just there to keep water and stuff out of the knuckle while also keeping the moly in.

      Hi Peter, thanks for watching
      We always suggest following the factory service manual when doing these jobs. The FSM typically has a page at the back of each section covering all relevant torque specs for that area, and there's a detailed list of tools and parts in each video description. Hope that helps!

    dont damage that esp on the outside, so yeah i got a jimny pulled it apart and noticed that my spindle washer was just missing and that wheel bearing nut was proper fucked like they tried to pull it loose with a pliers or vicegrip needless to say the fix was to lock the hubs in their 4WD state to get 4WD

    Couldnt you leave the car on the jacks and then engage 4 wheel drive to see if the front wheels spin?

    • @2ndGearLow
      @2ndGearLow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Zuthor, thanks for watching. No, we would not recommend this as it would be unsafe. The rear wheels were still on the ground in this video, and by putting the car in drive you would risk the car moving forward and off of the two front jack stands. You can hear 4wd engaging at the front hubs as shown in the video, it's easier to hear in person but you do need two people to check it

    I have the JLX version from 2005 270,000 km. It also has a "death wobble", but no one can tell me what the problem is. It has come and gone too, going almost 2 years with nothing. I took it back to the MOT and it came back. Not sure what to do now. Have any of your problems come back?

    • @2ndGearLow
      @2ndGearLow  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi mate, thanks for watching. Our problem went away for a very short amount of time after this episode was filmed (when new king pin bearings were installed), but then came back. The problem has gone away permanently after following the process outlined in a Suzuki Service Bulletin targeting this specific issue. Namely, assuming you have already had the wheels balanced correctly and the problem is not only happening under braking, look at replacing the leading arm bushings and installing shims on the front knuckle bearings (king pins). Steering vibration (or death wobbles) are often caused by improper bearing preload on the knuckle bearings for solid front axle vehicles - installing the shims increases that preload
