      That’s because every player who teaches a game will almost always lose. As the game teacher in my group, it’s rare that I ever win.
      By belief is that the student players have less to worry about as they play since they don’t know the game as well as the teacher player. The teacher player knows everything and over thinks instead of just playing. Plus the teacher player has to break their turns so much to help the other players on their turns that they typically and sometimes purposely screw themselves over for the sake of teaching lol.

    15:52 In case of a tie, you have to take off the leftmost card, not the closest one from the board.

    Excellent play through, Jon. I've played this once, and didn't love it, but watching this definitely makes me want to get it to the table again. In the game I played the player who went after the purple track the hardest did the best as well. I don't know if that's necessary to win the game, but will be trying it when I do get my copy to the table.

    Great play through! I’ve played 6 times and we always sort the dice by color. Made my brain hurt seeing them by pip value. Haha.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first time I played was 3p and we sorted by pips as well as color, creating essentially a matrix of dice to choose from. This was necessary for us though since one of the players is color blind and was having a rough time with a couple of those colors.

    Great video. I now realize I’ve been playing a rule wrong. Those end of game scoring cards - I thought they were for how many cards of that colour you had, not where you were on the track. That makes them a lot less useless! 😀

    One mistake: when it's the dummy player and its his turn to discard a card it the right most card with the highest influence but when its a tie its the left most. There where 3 cards with an influence of 3 so the left most should have been picked. There is an example in the rulebook.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting question, overall I don't think so. I do reroll them frequently until I get what I'm looking for though ;)

  • @RainTreeNecro
    @RainTreeNecro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    General rule you messed up the whole game, when a neutral die removes a card, you remove the highest card that is FURTHEST from the board. The rulebook says the "Leftmost of those tied cards".

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dang, that is a big assumption fail there. I played it this way at BGGcon where I quickly skimmed the rules, and since I remembered playing that way I just assumed I was playing correctly! Even though I fully re-read the rules before filming this, it still squeaked through. Thanks for pointing this out, I'll make a correction in the Klingon subtitles so that others hopefully learn from my mistake. Fortunately this has very little impact on the game itself, sure the card mix would have been quite different but overall I think the only real impact is that more crown token cards were discarded than should have been, so our overall crown acquisition was likely slightly lower than average.

  • @RainTreeNecro
    @RainTreeNecro 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The one game that I have played was also handily won by someone doing the monasteries. I foolishly let them get both purple dice (it was a three player game) every round and that let them hit EVERY monastery.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my first play (this was my 2nd) it was 3p and I went heavy monastery and I hit all but 1 I think. Even so I won by a single point, so it seemed strong but not overly so in that moment.

  • @RainTreeNecro

    8:42 You skip straight to blue's second die choice, skipping red's second die choice!

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh jeez, you are right! I'll add a note to the klingon subtitles about. I went back and watched that bit and honestly didn't say much more than "lets get the green 1 so that we can grab a cheap card as well as bump the green track to get some more points". Thanks for pointing this out, sorry it got chopped off in the edit!

  • @J-Wheeler-G
    @J-Wheeler-G 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm curious what are your thoughts on the game? More like a review. I love this game and unlike other people I do not think purple is over powered. Purple and Green are stronger than gray and orange by design. That's why there is always one dice less of each

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I talked for a while about my impressions of Coimbra here: th-cam.com/video/BoGd-w7rUjo/w-d-xo.html . My opinion hasn't changed since recording that video since this playthrough is the only other time I've played it since then. I will admit that the game didn't feel as interesting at 2p vs the 3p game I played at BGGcon.

    14:45 you give yourself 2 gold instead of 1 from your C card :)

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, I don't know how I made that mistake. Fortunately we made SO much gold over the course of the game that we never came close to spending it all so I doubt this actually impacted the final scores. Thanks for pointing this out, I've added a note about it to the Klingon subtitles.

    Can you do a play through of Brass: Lancashire or Birmingham?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had Brass Lancashire on my Patreon poll for one month and it did pretty well, but Coimbra easily beat it. It may win a future poll, though I don't think I have the time to make it happen if it doesn't end up being a winner there unfortunately.

  • @BrianD0313

    Excellent playthrough, Jon! I was curious, why only 2 players instead of 3? Does it play better with two?
    During Phase E, does it matter the color order of the dice activation?
    So would you say this is an Engine Builder/Resource Management/Drafting game?
    At the end of every round, you don't place out new castle tiles?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main reason I filmed this at 2 players instead of 3 was time restraints to get this out amongst everything else I had to do last week. Even at 2 players it took me 8 hours to film this, and it likely would have been 11 or so hours with 3 players, plus all the extra editing time that the longer raw footage would have created. Honestly I do regret not sucking it up and going for 3p with this play because I don't think the player count modifications are as robust for 2p as I thought going in. Having only 1 purple and 1 green die also made the monastery map area somewhat binary. During Phase E you can perform any dice color ordering that you want, and it will matter sometimes depending on what you want to do (activate purple first to move the pilgrim and gain a bump on another track for instance). This is certainly an Engine building, resource management, pool drafting game in my opinion :) The game only has 4 castle tile options, so they are always out there for each round.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are set up exactly like this for every 2 player game. There are less of them for 3p games and none at all in 4p.

    Purple track...expansion needed to slightly rebalance the strength of this strategy? What are your thoughts?

    • @alienslysly
      @alienslysly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not Jon obviously, but for me this playthough actually showcased how the purple track, while strong, isn't unbeatable. Sure the blue player won through it, but he had to invest heavily into the strategy (while red only dabbled), and IMO only won through the last card he drafted, meaning it was anyone's game until that point. Not to mention that Jon was playing in such a way to showcase different strategies (I would imagine real players would fight for purple more), and kinda 'wasted' 2 purchases - one with the grey die activation card, another when he forgo the "no purple die, move 2 steps" card.
      Is the purple track strong? Definitely. Could you win while ignoring it completely? Arguable, but likely not. Is it a sure win if you invest substantially in it? Nope, not in my book.

    • @alioolio
      @alioolio 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also don't believe the Purple track to be too strong. It is important but not an unbeatable strategy. I dominated a game with the Green Track where a player focused on Purple and I won by a fair margin. There is a fair bit of variation to the game and that what needs to be focused on, not just one track.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't feel like purple is too strong after two plays. As I pointed out in the wrap up, the purple track was heavily incentivized this game due to the random voyage and monastery layout. I have read on BGG that many think that purple is overpowered, and perhaps it is, but in my experience I haven't seen that yet.

    • @nithrania-gameinanutshell
      @nithrania-gameinanutshell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonGetsGames It's the same in all videos. I recently experiemented with the Gate effect because I wanted to eliminate some noise from my voice recording, and suddenly my voice sounded similar to what I hear in your videos. Then I realized - this is it, and that's why I wanted to let you know.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nithrania-gameinanutshell Well I appreciate the feedback about it. In the latest edit I messed around with the audio options in Final Cut abit and honestly ended up liking the way it currently sounds the best. I agree that it does seem slightly gated, but when I pull that back then I just get the echo back in that I'm trying to nullify. I'm far from an recorded audio expert, and at some point would like to get the main audio feeling closer to my natural sound but so far this is as good as I seem to be able to get it.
