The way I see things, relating to the clone or copy thing is like this. In every branch of interest we all stand on the shoulders of giants. That obviously includes the manufacturers/designers etc. The companies just doing direct copies, and usually not well, for the only sake of making money. That sucks. It doesn’t help anyone. But when a new design is introduced; the designer should feel flattered if other makers/companies pick up on it. After all, they got to be able to design/make it from those that came before them. Edit: Just to add. It’s the same thing really. All the different traditional patterns are, today, made by many companies/designers. The very first was made by just one.
