Adding a shallow/wetland area with cattails and such to a pond acts as a natural filter. Removes excess nutrients, and is good habitat for bait fish n frogs that your big fish eat. 👍 like the channel
The best thing you could do for your pond is to prevent sediment from washing into it. I see a lot of bare soil around the edges. Having a thick vegetation around the pond will slow sediment transport into your pond. It needn’t be tall. Just a few inches. But it needs to be thick. Making the muddy water dark with dye will reduce the sunlight getting to the bottom. That may reduce plant growth but can increase the temperature of the water causing other problems. If you really want to increase the health of your ponds, call your county’s agricultural extension office. They will be happy to show you how to truly evaluate the health of your pond. An evaluation based in science, not marketing hype.

i dont know if i like the idea of running a Dye. I am currently about to attempt to clean up a pond with my neighbor. I have kept a lot of fish and I am trying to figure out a way to find the balance for the pond. I don't like the idea of just dumping in Dye seems.. wrong. I am thinking about raking out the plants over growing it, then looking into maybe getting some wildlife to toss in it. bottom feeders, and other fish to help with the pond. there should be a balance point right? Idk who i am asking i am just thinking out loud in a comment section. there are a ton of frogs and I saw a water snake in there.. but i think maybe adding some crawfish, and carp to roam around and eat vegetation.. then im not sure. some turtles? red ear sliders might be nice to help munch on other stuff.. then also finding some good plants that are native and will help filter the water.. :D i have no idea what to do.
Hey Josh your little catfish pond reminded me of a farmer I once worked for on and off. He stuck a piece of metal pipe upright in his pond and every time just before he fed the fish he would hit that pipe with a hammer making it ring Then he would wait for about a minute and fed them. Any time he wanted to eat fish all he had to do was strike that pole and the fish would gather for the feeding. a hoop net on a pole was usually enough to get a good mess of fish for eating.
I guess that’s better than using a stick of dynamite. 😂

Absolutely fantastic video Josh. As a licensed aquatic weed manager in Florida I highly recommend this. Cost effectiveness along with little to no negative environmental impact. Unfortunately a lot of people in Florida believe that aquatic weed management needs to come to a screeching halt. That natural means will take care of the problem with the invasive plants overnight. Sadly I deal with it everyday. Great video man. Love it. Keep up more pond videos

Josh the best way to put pond dye in is to get you a 5 gallon bucket and put about 2 gallon water in the bucket add some dye and dash it out in the pond keep doing this all the way around the pond

Wouldn't water lilies indicate healthy clean water and shade the water, making it cooler? Plus habitat for fish?
To some extent, yes, but if they cover the whole surface, then the water can't be aerated by the wind. Generally, water lilies and other bottom anchored plants will only grow in about 4 to 4.5 feet deep or less of water. The only good use that has been found for water hyacinth, which is a fast-growing, invasive plant, is in shallow(about 1.5 to 2 foot) ponds to treat effluent, laid out so the water flows through the roots which will remove contaminants similar to retention ponds. Water hyacinth will double in 2 weeks' time and its roots do not go into the pond bottom so it just floats. It can get so thick a tugboat can't get through it.
Great video! I use copper sulfate to kill algae and use the dye to help with vegetation growth. It's a yearly thing for me here in Oklahoma..

Yeah. If he was using the entire jug, that would definitely help reduce the risk of getting dye all over your hands. I worked the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, DE, and we mixed all the premix for drinks in 5 gal jugs. To speed up the process, I would stab the bottom of any plastic bottles as I was pouring them in the jugs. Took filling the jug from about 1-1/2 minutes to about 30 seconds. The guy in charge of us was shocked how much faster we were able to fill jugs and mentioned that he’d never had anyone before then do that. I guess that’s what happens when you put military folk used to constantly taught to improve things in charge of a process. In 3 days, we filled about 500 jugs.
You should put together a blooper reel at the end of the year. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed watching filming bloopers. I loved seeing the plane fly by. I know it’s annoying when it disrupts filming, but after working on planes for nearly 17 years for the USAF, I still get excited when I see planes fly. Also, the pond looks a lot better since adding the dye. If I end up taking over my family’s farm after I retire, I’ll need to use some because the pond on that property needs a ton of work after years of neglect.

I use it in my pond (which is about the same size) in south Georgia, too. It prevents photosynthesis from occurring thus stopping the algae blooms. Tip: stay away from the powdered dye bags unless you want blue Smurf freckles. The powder gets in the wind when you toss them in and...well, you know the rest. Be prepared to treat more frequently if heavy rains occur as the spillways release the overflow and may get you back to a brown-ish color which will start to support the regrowth of algae and other unwanted aquatic plant life. We've restocked fish (all the same species as you) about a month ago but also added mosquito fish which seem to be putting a dent in that nuisance insect population. Great video!

I have seen small wind mills anchored in ponds in Ontario that just pump water and provides aeration ,the ponds look good
I use the dissolvable packs that I can just toss out into my pond. Less messy and it doesn’t get all over me! I use equal parts of blue and black to get a more natural tone. I don’t like it when it is that artificial blue. The dye does help a lot, but on a really hot day, I may still get an algae bloom, so I use some copper sulfate as needed. I also have an aerator to pump some oxygen onto the pond floor. The bubbles bring air up to the surface, and even on the coldest day here in SE MO, I will have a small circle of thawed surface.
I thought at one time you talked about using aeration for the ponds. Is that still in the plans? Something about using a septic tank aerator pump vs a pond pump due to cost and longevity? And btw, wolverines! ❤️🇺🇸

For a photo op, we put copper sulphate in our open reservoirs. It turned them the prettiest shade of blue!
Your setup is similar to mine. I have a 1 acre and 3 acre pond. Just bought it last year, so just getting familiar.
You'll have to report back and let us know how long it lasts. Some dyes do better than others. Also, I use the black and really like it...looks more 'natural' than the blue (to my eye). YMMV.

Water movement and aeration. Control silt entering the pond. The dye just covers up the problem.

i'm shocked a product like this exists. Very cool. I'm looking to dig out a pond on my property and really didn't want the orange water of my clay, this seems like a good option.
You mentioned those hyper color ponds and I've seen them too. A different color dye done poorly or another chemical treatment? What is that in your opinion? That would definitely be something I dont want to do.
Ponds are looking really good my friend. Nothing worse than a pond that's unmanaged and over grown.

Might try gypsum to fix suspended clay in the water. Gypsum will attach to the clay molecules and drop to the bottom... Even sheet rock will clear it up. Test a small sample of water in a quart jar. Add just a small bit of crushed sheet rock. If the water clears up it will clear up your pond too.
so a cosmetic fix...not really sure how dye treats algae other than limiting sunlight at lower depths. My pond is muddy color now for a few years...but was due to erosion of clay based sediment....as grass and such grow along banks and edges I hope to be able to clear it up naturally...and if needed something to bond and settle any suspended particles to bottom.
We use the Pond Dye from TSC. Our pond is 1/3 acre. Unfortunately after each rain, the dye tends to move downstream. I raised the spillway once. Didn’t really help. The pond is stream fed. Flow increases dramatically during/after rain. But I have to admit, the pond looks amazing when the dye is fully diluted into the surface water. Looking for an inexpensive solution to increasing the length of time it remains. Up here in NW NJ, Mother Nature is making up for the lack of rain out west.

You mentioned the ponds are used to water the cows. Do you let them in the pond or do you put up an electric fence around it so they just have access to drink and not to muck it up?

Our pond has become covered with alge terribly over the years and we just have not known what to do to correct it. We did add carp at one time but that alone didn't fix it. We had a major fish kill last summer just out of the blue. I'm assuming you have only used the die and nothing else to have an initial effect on the alge.

Interesting. I am of mixed opinion on the use of the dye. Being the pond by the house is fed by a seasonal creek, the water will not always be the pretty blue unless you add regularly, or so I would think. The cat tails will do alot to purify the water as they are a natural purifier. Algae is usually indicative of too much nitrogen in the water so wondering if the catfish are what the issue is. Would a different species of fish have a different result to the pond? Just curious. Place looks nice!

Up until a week ago, we had about 25 geese and goslings. Now only about 4 or so. I noticed a few sick birds. Anything going around? Did covid get them too?

I've heard of using copper sulphate to help with algae growth.
They used to do that, but the copper will kill the fish. Humans can almost eat chunks of copper with no harm, but fish are sensitive to it. It's one of the reasons they are going away from copper water pipes. Copper ends up in the wastewater, then in the treatment plants (which don't remove metals), then in the streams.

It’s funny, I’ve always thought people who put the dye in their ponds were kind of annoying and silly. But I always think about the pond as far as health of the water as a fish guy Who keeps and raises fish. I just never really considered it before from the point of you of a water source. I like to control things naturally without using chemicals. But it’s probably a whole lot easier to throw some of that in there a couple times a year than it is to bring in tilapia to eat the vegetation an error rate or put a strata fire in there. I always understood what it did I just thought it kind of looked bad.
From a chemical standpoint it’s definitely a way to go, you’re using something mechanical instead of something chemical to kill the plants. Since you’re using it for a water source and not just a fish pond it just makes sense practically because it’s gonna accomplish what you want. I still don’t like the blue color, though that is a lot better than the bright annoying blue, but at least I understand why people are doing it now, because the pond isn’t just a giant fish tank it’s a water source for the farm.
