Fucking love Pom Poko. Used to sing at the top of my lungs, "tanuki's balls sway, even when there is no wind" in japanese as a kid, mostly to annoy my family. the no-face trick scared the shit out of me back in the day though. Also Laputa is hilarious for how it sounds in Spanish.
Yes, so in Pom Poko they aren't raccoons, they're Tanuki. Which are sometimes mistranslated as raccoons because of their superficially similar appearance. They're depicted in Japanese folklore as mischievous shapeshifters and harbingers of good fortune, and in nature, they do have massive balls relative to their size.
@@Pratalax They're different animals though, they're both Carnivora but after they're in completely different families. Raccoons are closer to badgers and otters than they are to Tanuki.
@@supercool559 They're just weeb raccoons, making them worthless in comparison. Also, they're also referred to as "Japanese raccoon dogs" so, ya know, they're not raccoons, but they are raccoon dogs.
I thought that a lot of the Seaplane Mercenary stuff in Porco Rosso was pretty historically accurate - if exaggerated. Barring the fact that he was resurrected as a pig of course
Tom being a man after my heart. He lists all of the ones that are my faves as his faves!! I super recommend Whisper of the Heart if you enjoy the ones Tom listed as his favourites. It's got a similar vibe but is such an underrated Ghibli film.
Do you think they figured out that the "raccoon suit" in super Mario Bros is actually a tanooki suit? That the means of flying is actually a stretched out scrotum in that game?

Can we just appreciate...
How much Howl's Moving Castle looks like a, albeit weird, Ork Stompa?
Ahh Japanese Mythology, Tom and Ben don't even need to jazz it up for sexy lore
Needs more centaurs
A great deal of mythology in general is like that. People tend to be weird when they get bored.

I thought their balls weren't that big but that their scrotum was ridiculously stretchy.
I don’t get Japans Mythological Tanuki are all so fat, like they’re fluffy I’m real life but clearly skinny
ehh you can call it a fuckin' racoon, everyone knows what you're talking about.

Princess Mononoke is the best one hands down. No competition.

I remember being annoyed when I found out it wasn't a squirrel suit, because squirrel suits are actual things for flying.
im so happy tom likes porco rosso i always get ridiculed when i say its the best ghibli movie
The best part is Pom Poko is aimed for children haha
