This looks great. I'm just annoyed about one thing. When this was proposed and tendered, the plan was for there to be not just one, but two different night train services. One from Stockholm to Hamburg, but also another one from Malmö to Brussels! But during the bidding process, SJ was the only operator to place a bid on the Hamburg train, while the Brussels trains received zero bids, because the regulations in Germany were too problematic to work with, due to them illegalising long distance subsidised trains, and requiring that any train in Germany above a certain distance operate on a commercial basis. And frankly as a Copenhagener I'm still mad that we won't have a night train to Brussels, we really need a convenient link to the Benelux, whether it be Amsterdam, Brussels, or any other city in that part of Europe.
as a belgian i totally agree! we were really looking forward to this train. we love the scandinavian countries and it sucks not to have a good train connection to get there. i read that the reason for not getting any bids was that belgium and germany do not subsidies these trains, where denmark and sweden (who see these trains as a public service, which they clearly are) do subsidies them. since the train from hamburg to stockholm only has a small part in germany (so only a little part would not be subsidised) it was still workable to do this. the train from brussels to malmõ would have a too long part that would not be subsidised, making it almost impossible to be profitable. besides that, at the time of the biddings, we were without government in belgium ... and by the time we finally had a government it was to late for them to still do something about this (which was kind of the plan). still hoping for the future though ...
@@sanstoop Yeah. I know it's not as direct for Belgians, but one route which could be served by private operators with relative ease is Copenhagen to Amsterdam. The air route between the 2 is already one of the busiest in Europe, and such a train would spend much less time in germany. European sleeper, as well as a new startup named turquoise trains both have the route as a potential possibility down the line, but for them, the biggest issue is actually finding a partner in Denmark. Currently if you want to run private trains through Denmark, you pretty much only have 1 option and that's hectorrail, who ever since coming under new management, have been a lot less cooperative with new startup rail operators. So Denmark really needs more companies with electric locomotives ready for use in Denmark, and who are willing and able to lease them out to private train operators.
Can you explain the problem, as you see it? What is the problem with requiring trains to run on a commercial basis? Does OBB run night trains between these countries?

I remember back in 2013 when I went on an SJ X2000 train to Copenhagen and later changed to the CityNightLine to Cologne. I hope I can do more of these night train across europe in the future! :D Very nice video!
I did travel on the Hamburg to Stockholm express in the mid 80s! Journey time was roughly 14 hours (pretty good comparing with the 12 hour trip in this video), via Helsingborg to Helsingor and Rodby Havn to Puttgarden train ferries of course. It was Couchette and sleeping accommodation only, and I recalled grudging paying extra 15 DM or so for the couchette supplement (I was on railpass of course) on the DB blue and beige carriage. Only one service per day. Thankful for bringing back my old memories and I am verifying my old trip with my mid 80s Thomas Cook timetable right now!
The night train to Hamburg is not a present phenomena it exsisted already in the 70's . But people usually forget as it always functioned impecably in connection to trains to Italy.
Thanks for the video! Living about half an hour away from the Nässjö station and going the opposite direction, this could be a great option for future train travels, arriving early morning in Hamburg and travelling onwards.
Great report, thanks. I hope the revival of night trains in Europe means fewer flights. Train travel is one of life's great delights and a well-organised sleeper berth is ecstasy!
6 bunks? No catering? No proper sleeper? Which part was better? Ummm no. Who is that going to convince to travel on train than a 1 hour flight and sleep in a proper hotel bed?
Thanks for posting such an enjoyable video. The Orient Express train shows that carriages can have very long lives and still be clean and comfortable and, of course, the longer the life of a coach the lower the carbon footprint.
This connection has huuuuge potential. Like they could start with a long train somewhere in germany and split it in Malmö. One half continues to Oslo, the other to Stockholm. All the scandinavian capitals (aside from Helsinki, but that's just Finland being Finland) in one train.
The issue with operating trains from Western Europe to Finland is the track gauge. Which is built with the same width as the Russian railways. Not to mention the detour to get to Helsinki from lets say Stockholm. So trains between Finland and Scandinavia/Germany is faaar into the future...
@@boffisgd there is plan for Rail Baltica, which will connect Poland with Tallinn via Kaunas and Riga with standard gauge and Estonia and Finland hypothesise a tunnel under the Baltic between them

Not surprised SJ was unable to prepare the inaugural journey in time... Went there a few weeks ago and basically every single train I used had some kind of a problem. Ranging from dirty cars to a complete cancellation of the train without any replacement...
This has nothing to do with SJ though. The sleeping cars are RIC marked and should be able to run anywhere in Europe, but Denmark has it's own seperate rules for trains that cross the Great Belt Tunnel.
Me and my kids would love to do this trip. Catching the train from England to Stockholm when visiting my mum. Can't wait for this line to be fully operational, hopefully with a stop in Hamburg Central as well (it's more convenient for me to reach). Imagine traveling from Hamburg to Stockholm and then from Stockholm to Narvik via night trains. Much more convenient than to drive that distance by car, and definitely more eco friendly than flying.
So, two stops in Germany; Berlin and Hamburg, three stops in Danmark; Padborg, Odense and København and then a whole bunch of unnecessary stops in Sweden? Unnecessary such as Lund and Hässleholm (you can go there by local commuter trains within the Scania region from Malmö). Alvesta is a big junction for the Småland region and it also connects Southern Västra Götaland to the line so that stop is a good idea. Imagine that you can go all the way from Narvik in Norway to Berlin in Germany with just one change. Fantastic! Great video! 👍
I was gonna comment that you should try X55, X62, ER1 and the refurbished X2 but then saw your Instagram and you’re already off to Norway lmao, enjoy your travels though. The issue with the sleeping cars was actually quite publicised in Swedish press as well btw.
Great viewing from here in NZ..where only Wellington and Auckland have a decent suburban rail system. In the past 7 years, I have used mainly the 100 km long Wellington >>Masterton line ( ave speed +- 61 km/hr over 95 mins). The trip is city- suburban until you climb slightly up to the Tunnel-- all 8.6 km of it, the a steeper gradient down to the the plain/valley and the remaining 45km. A pleasant relaxing trip with speeds ranging anywhere between 60--85 km/hr, depending on trackwork, and using ex BR Mk 2.E carriages. These have been regauged, of course, plug-doored, excellent lighting with 3 types at once, power points at every seat and Tables...much sought after. Not fast, but comfortable and clean, with very recently renewed upholstery. Very busy on the 3 "workers" trains morning and late afternoon, running from 6-9 carriage consists.
Wow, what a fantastic work, a video on the same day of the inaugural ride. Awesome! Thanks for such a speed! Just a little correction, the Snälltåget and SJ (actually RDC is the owner, the same company that is responsible for the train in Germany, the rented Vectron is theirs) couchette cars are not the same type as Optima Express ones. Optima uses older 27,5 m long Bcmh cars without air conditioning and with three bigger compartments in the middle, while Snälltåget and SJ/RDC use modernized 26,4 m long Bvcmbz cars with AC and disabled compartment. RDC is also the operator of the AutoReiseZug to Lörrach, and you can see exactly the MUn sleeping car - which was meant to be on SJ Euronight, but declined by the Danes - as the last passenger car in consist. A retro whistle reveals the locomotive, it's their own Class 110, of course.

I hope this will become a trend in the whole of Europe
Love the trains of Europe, it is such a lovely way to travel. I just saw the Euronight service listed for the first time so thank you for the insight!
That was Excellent !!! That was a class act of Mark...:):):)
You two are like "Batman & Robin"...😂😂😂
I think you your You Tube channels are some of the best out there...😀😀😀
It's seems so cheap for the time and distance ... thanks for the ride one more time. ... Mark 👍
Mark has always been THEEEE MAN. And he never does loo reviews.
I remember back in 2013 when I went on an SJ X2000 train to Copenhagen and later changed to the CityNightLine to Cologne. I hope I can do more of these night train across europe in the future! :D Very nice video!
🤣 the hooter of the train 😂🚂 feels like old day's ❤️ love that and i so much in love with that car motorcycle carier trains in EU .
Thankful for bringing back my old memories and I am verifying my old trip with my mid 80s Thomas Cook timetable right now!
we travelled often, at least once a year, in the 70s :)
Great video thank you ! Helps me plan for my trip ! So excited 🤗🤗🤗🤗
The night train to Hamburg is not a present phenomena it exsisted already in the 70's . But people usually forget as it always functioned impecably in connection to trains to Italy.
Oh man, I wish more trains had that whistle at 7:06
6:52 i really like the haunting european whistle
Thanks for the video! Living about half an hour away from the Nässjö station and going the opposite direction, this could be a great option for future train travels, arriving early morning in Hamburg and travelling onwards.
Thanks for taking us along on this historic trip. A great way for me to start a long weekend. (Now I want to go to Sweden!)
👏👏👏👏
And I noticed one of your classic Citroen DS’s waiting to board the car train!. 👍🏻🏴
Wow, this was really fast editing, good job, thank you!
I have waited for this for five hours now
Thanks for posting such an enjoyable video.
Oslo used to have trains to mainland Europe
Finland is not part of Scandinavia.
@@roger0929 nordics or whatever :D
The issue with operating trains from Western Europe to Finland is the track gauge. Which is built with the same width as the Russian railways. Not to mention the detour to get to Helsinki from lets say Stockholm. So trains between Finland and Scandinavia/Germany is faaar into the future...
@@boffisgd there is plan for Rail Baltica, which will connect Poland with Tallinn via Kaunas and Riga with standard gauge and Estonia and Finland hypothesise a tunnel under the Baltic between them
the tech side of your videos is getting better and better :)
Great video. It is such fun to see different models and styles of trains in Europe!
Stunning livery. Sorry private Pullman wasn't available. Hamburg station was a bit dull. You and The Man in seat 61 did a nice review.
Thank you Thibault😀💚
Good job. Congratulation. Luiz Paulo - Rio de Janeiro - Brasil.
Great video Thibault, & glad Mark was able to help you out. Looks like SJ have got a really good service there, & a quick search shows (delays & connection permitting) I could travel from my home station of Chesterfield (UK) to Stockholm Central in 24 hours & 43 minutes, all by rail!
Great to see this new night service from Hamburg to Stockholm. Any time a new night service is launched I do a little happy dance inside my head! Also very cool that Man In Seat 61 and doc7 were on the same train!
Voltages for the route Hamburg Altona Stockholm are 25kv 50hz Padborg to Oresund Bridge 1.8m strip Pantographs 15kv 16/2/3hz Oresund Bridge To Stockholm 15kv 16.7hz Hamburg Altona Padborg 1.95m Pantograph strips Excellent trip report and for the Vectron Baureihe 193 1293 AFB cruise switch is on the left leg panel. Malmö to Stockholm was a SJ Rc locomotive the prototype for Amtrak AEM-7. Amtrak designation for SJ RC was X995. I do see Man in Seat 61 producing his own video on this Trip
Thank you for a great video ! I like the colours of the train, and hope it won’t be too long before more carriages are available.
Train - the best way to travel. Great. !
Those flat wheel sounds are so musical.
@@NerdX151 - and SJ didn't know about this until it was too late to get sleeping cars that are approved for Denmark tunnels? C'mon...
Lovely trip train. And the Windows its posible open. Wonderfull. Good made by SJ
Absolutely good footage about SJ EuroNight!
You've been to amazing places.
Respect from Hungary!
I really enjoy your video
That two tone horn though followed by an steam engine whistle !
Me and my kids would love to do this trip. Catching the train from England to Stockholm when visiting my mum. Train from London to Brussels then train from Brussel to Hamburg and this would be the last change and it'll be fun to practice my German and a bit of Dutch as well. Swedish is my native language
Amazing turnaround time. Great job getting this done in such a short time!
Thank you for the fast edit! This was my Friday evening entertainment :)
Hamburg-Altona is one ugly station building but I kind of like that station with the loading cars. Altona is nice part of Hamburg too.
oooh sweet
Now I have a quicker link to the nordic countries :)
A few years back I had to travel from Hamburg to Coppenhagen first to get to Stockholm.
Now Vienna - Hamburg and Hamburg - Stockholm is done in 2 days, instead of 2 and a half, great for my future journey to Scandinavia
Hmmm. Wrong number of the Rc at 11:57. That my friend is an Rc6. The only loco SJ still have🙂
Amazing and more coaches must be added.
Thanks for the trip report! Great news; compared to taking the ferry Kiel-Göteborg you save six hours from Zurich to Helsinki.
However, on arrival to Stockholm, I prefer the right-hand side view on the Gamla old city
Great video Thibault, many thanks. It's fantastic to see so many night services returning to Europe. Although I much prefer travelling by day, the night services really do provide a valuable service.
Thank you for this Trip report! Also nice to see another great train TH-camr doc7AustinDreamliner on the same train! I finally saw how he looks like😃
Thanks for this! I hope to ride this one some day!
Thanks for your video. It is good news that we can travel from Hamburg to Stockholm by train. I do not fly and need to get from Dublin, Ireland, to Lulea, North Sweden. The problem is, that I have to take my dog too. And it is a husky, quite a big dog.
Two of my favorite train travelling TH-camrs joining forces. What more can you ask for? Sadly this type of two car trains are common in my home country Romania.hope to see trains make a great comeback here. Greetings and thanks from Timișoara, Romania!
Loved this video and the feelings you was able to transmit us! Great work!
Another great video, thank you really enjoyed it. I hope some day to get to Europe and ride these trains.
Un beau train allemand et belle vidéo j'a adoré merci simplicité railway
I was gonna comment that you should try X55, X62, ER1 and the refurbished X2 but then saw your Instagram and you’re already off to Norway lmao, enjoy your travels though. The issue with the sleeping cars was actually quite publicised in Swedish press as well btw.
Yes another Swedish train trip video
WOW! At 3:00, a Citroen DS in pristine condition!
Sehr schön!!!
Love the idea of overnight trains. Don't have to worry about booking hotels for the night.
So super and I hope they get it complete, with en suite rooms. I couldn't travel otherwise.
It was really simple railway! Amazing!
Wonderfull trip train. Thanks.

Fine report, Thibault.
Great trip report
It's great to see more and more Night trains in Europe. Will you ever visit India and see our overnight trains?
Good stuff!
👍👍👍👊😎
3 of my favourite travel vlogers on the same train what are the chances, I’m with you it’s nice to see overnight travel picking up again in Europe, now to get my lazy bum out of my comfortable settee and get booking great post
Very nice video brother ☺️
Well i must say, compared to the stations that we have here, this station is magnificent….thank you from South Africa
I saw this video today and i take the bus to Linköping and around 15.00 clock i did see this train going to Hamburg from Stockholm just weird but cool
From minute 0:00 to minute 3:28 I thought "Hooray, this is the solution to my travel problems!"
From minute 3:28 I understand: "That's a catastrophic service - I'll definitely not take part in that!"
Thanks for the clarification - I will avoid this train connection.
