Part 23
Once the fighting started, there was no going back. Tybalt had been clear about that, and everyone had taken those words to heart.
The two Knights spearheading the strike were the first thing the enemy noticed, as the ground shook under the heavy footfalls of the giant war engines. Each dedicated themselves to a different task, the Crusader turning its guns on the most heavily fortified enemy positions and clearing them out.
The Gallant had another task altogether, and perhaps even more important. As it worked its way towards the spaceport, it diverted course, crushing several cultists and beastmen underfoot, while looking for something heavier.
It found just that in an enemy tank. A captured Leman Russ with its old iconography scratched out and crudely painted over. It would do nicely. Its thunderstrike gauntlet wrapped around the back of the tank's turret and ripped it off. All the Knight really needed was something heavy, and the turret was enough.
As it sprinted onward, the other Knight covered its twin, blanketing fire around the Gallant so it could run unobstructed. Until it reached the weak spot designated in their tactical briefings. The supposed trap.
The Gallant ran towards it, throwing the turret at the poorly sealed breach as if it were a grenade. One he detonated with a shot from the autocannons on his back, which ignited the shell that had already been loaded into the turret.
The resulting explosion wasn't one of fire, but a simple impact of pieces of oversized shrapnell. It wasn't enough to breach the wall again, but it did devastate the defensive positions around it, meaning the Gallant was free to slam into and through the wall.
And it did just that, quickly followed by its twin.
Once inside, the Knights sent their message back to the main force, before the enemy started to move.
Tybalt received the message the Twin Blades had sent him over the vox.
The first orders that went out were movement orders. Both the Adraxian 15th armoured regiment and Chinjaal's 5th brotherhood went first, as speed was essential. Chinjaal's men had all forsaken caution completely and decided to mount on the bikes their geneline was known to utilise so effectively. Each of the bikes was mounted with twin bolters, and some of the Warhawks had been armed with plasma guns or flamers. Those who had not received special weapons had instead been issued chainswords or power weapons, as Chinjaal was anticipating close quarters combat.
The Khan himself weighed his power lance in his hand, before giving the order to move. He'd made sure every unit of tanks was covered by at least a few of his brothers.
Making their way to the breach was the easy part. It was what came after that required skill. Once inside, their bikes were limited in their movements by the pathways provided. There was plenty of room inside to manoeuvre, but every hallway had a set destination. They never stopped moving though, which made it hard for the enemy trap to catch them, especially at the speed they were going.
Chinjaal smiled as he raced through the spaceport, at times clashing with enemies, but never lingering long enough for them to understand what had happened. He wasn't there to wipe out entire groups, he was just there to keep them busy and weaken them.
The tanks would deal with anything that survived their brief contact with the Warhawks.
The first ambush had been met by two Knights. Unable to deal with such firepower, they had wisely retreated and signalled a need for heavier firepower. Once their support arrived however, they weren't met by the Knights, but rather a company of Space Marines racing around far too quickly for the heavy weapons to catch up.
What surprised Festrax even more was the reports that apparently the enemy tanks that had breached the spaceport were acting in the exact same manner, firing a few shots before moving on as fast as the drivers could make their machines go.
And apparently the Knights were still somewhere inside the spaceport, but since they hadn't slowed down, and the command channels were being flooded with reports of enemy movement, they were hard to pin down... or find for that matter, though how someone could lose sight of the enormous walkers was beyond Festrax. He just knew his men had.
Ralkin was awaiting his orders on the other side of the command display, though to say he was waiting patiently would be a blatant lie. The berserker had been put in charge by his brothers. A task he had vehemently objected to, yet they had ignored him. Each of them had thought it would be better to let Ralkin endure the waiting than having to do it themselves. It had taken it's toll, and the Berserker was clearly out of patience.
"Send my berserkers. We'll have those Warhawks dragged before you in no time and-."
Festrax shook his head, the simple motion enough to silence the berserker.
"This is not the killing strike. The Warhawks are weakening us, and sending any more of our Astartes would only play into their hands. Let them wear themselves out before the big strike."
"A bigger strike than two Knights? If we wait too long, they'll have a foothold."
"Let them. They'll have a foothold here, which means they'll smell blood. Send reinforcements here, and we will have done our job. If they do not, we'll hold the spaceport and still win. All we have to do is bleed them, make sure they are in no state to reinforce the Rainfall Bastion or Uriel's Rest."
"Khorne take your delaying tactics, there is blood to be won and skulls to be reaped! We can strike at them and make sure they'll never reinforce anyone ever again!"
"And what if I promise you a bigger trophy? A truly worthy sacrifice?"
The berserker seemed to mull that over for a bit.
"Speak."
"If we wait, the Lord-Captain that took your leg will show himself again, sooner or later. He'll have to. And you will be there to reap your reward."
"You have a way with words, surgeon." Ralkin's smile twisted into a grin that showed his pointed fangs "We'll do it your way."
Tybalt's strike force made it to the wall a lot later than Chinjaal and his brothers had with the tanks. Their approach had been a lot easier though, as the Knights, tanks and Warhawks had left very little of the outside defences intact.
Inside, the infantry regiments split into groups, each led by an Astartes of the 7th company. Tybalt's own group would function as the main force, with the most experienced soldiers and Tybalt's command staff to make good on that promise.
They didn't just relay orders. They were the fist that smashed through any organised defences left in the wake of the Knights and Chinjaal's rampage.
The enemy seemed to crumble under the combined assault, leaving the Imperial forces with a foothold inside the spaceport in less than three hours. With the initial task out of the way, they started on the next one.
Galaethon had already drafted up plans, and the regiments chosen to be part of the operation were well disciplined. As soon as the orders were received, they started fortifying their positions, creating a secondary fortress within the spaceport, with tanks and transport vehicles functioning as mobile turrets and bunkers.
A day after the start of the operation, the battle for Velion's Spaceport had started all over again.
And this time Tybalt would make sure they did it right.
Oh...My..after i read your stories about fighting against the enemy in the battle. I was very fascinated and amazed by stories and your storyline. While i was reading your stories, i can imagine it at the same time as i read your stories. Lastly, before i end my speaking about how majestic and amazing your stories is. I am really looking forward to read more of your stories and i have a question. Do you have any more stories or any more of your novels from other website? Or perhaps from any app like wattpad? “This is Our Last Fight” is a particular favorite! (Although honestly all of them are favorites) So perfect for the moment when the protagonists resign themselves to their fate of not being able to make it out of the battle alive and decide to make every strike against the enemy count, so they can go out knowing that they did everything they could.
And “What Comes After” is another particular favorite as well! It’s so powerful, and so perfect for the epic fight for the survival of a civilization in need of a brighter future!
