I was fortunate enough to meet John Wetton during a record store album signing for the first Asia album. I had him sign my copy of Red. Funny enough, after signing he ended by putting a big dot on Robert Fripp’s face. A year later, around the time of Crimson’s Beat, I met Bill Bruford who signed my Red album. He signed his name, saw the dot the Wetton put on Fripp’s face, and proceeded to put a big dot on Wetton’s face. Came close to meeting Fripp, but it didn’t happen.

JOHN WETTON this afternoon I felt a deep cut in my heart. You are not with us anymore. Well… all I have to say is THANK YOU. Your songs from Asia, King Crimson, Uriah Heep and other bands helped me confront the bleak life and the alienated teenage years in Brazil during the 70’s and 80’s. You made my life happier, shared my hardships and the good moments. Your songs also helped me shape into a person that I am today and I am very thankful for you. RIP from Brazil

I was always kind of fascinated that John Wetton and Greg Lake had very similar sounding voice both played bass equally great and were both in King Crimson and both passed away so close together, first Greg in Dec 2016 then John Jan 2017, I saw UK and Asia back in the day both bands put on great shows and memorable to this day. There's great videos of John in King Crimson playing the song "Lament" "Easy Money" and "Larks Tongues In Aspic Part1 & 2" ...pretty amazing video quality too and sounds GREAT

Wow, John Wetton is a really fair dinkum bloke. I had no idea he's done so much in the music industry. Knew about UK, and Asia of course, and his solo stuff, but not his other work. Brilliant. And he's spot on with his appraisal of the Asia albums he was a part of, as you'd expect. Incredible records, all three of them.

John Whetton, 5 years ago I got a copy of 'Watcher' with you singing. It's how I tested car stereos and never saw you. Not long ago, I saw you doing 'Firth' and was surprised you played bass. (I know this sounds dumb.) And yesterday, I was turned on to 'Starless' which I've heard in several versions now. U.K. reunion is the best. But now you are...my idol. I thought at 60, I'd be over that. Thank you sir.

Excellent interview btw. I have admired John Wetton since becoming a King Crimson fan when I was 14 years old hearing Larks Tongues in Aspic. I saw UK opening Tull in the early 80s with Terry Bozzio and they were amazing. I can't say I was much into Asia but felt that JW certainly deserved huge success and had some huge hits. His voice and bass playing was superlative and of the very best in rock. RIP

Fantastic. Thank you, Eric. Without efforts like yours during this period, we'd have a vacuum during this period of history for artists like John. And now that you've transferred it, it's as though interviews this natural and conversational (like we might hear on podcasts now) were readily accessible in 1997 which, of course , was not the case then. As we know, an interview of any sort at all was not something you'd easily come across in 1997 for an artist like this... much less an interview this natural. So, your efforts were/are so important.

Alpha (1983) was a very good album (although a bit muddy in the production, tho). Surely you're not saying their self-titled debut (1982) was not as good. Because their debut was amazing (and excellently produced, btw). Also was a humungous multiplatinum seller.

I've seen every band in concert from Led Zeppelin to Dread Zeppelin but never saw King Crimson although I did see Bruford, Fripp, Levin & Belew
calling themselves that. Crim's best era featured Wetton, he recorded Lark's Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black & Red and was on many
live recordings, some that came out a quarter of a century later.

Obscure reference, but Wetton totally would've loved Beyond the Valley of the Dolls! Wonder if he ever checked it out.

29:10 "Hold Me Now" Blair: "Being in love with somebody but it's not working out but yet you just want to hang on to them because you're so in love". Wetton : "But it's about my mother". LOFL !

Love wetton, aside from Anderson , the most unique and powerful voice of prog
