Three years ago I stated that within 10-15 years the crossing would be eliminated. Well it started last week, the crossing is out of service with the road closed because it is being eliminated. Work started on February 3rd, and is expected to reopen with cars going underneath the underpass five lanes wide. Covert Avenue and Urban Avenue were both eliminated last year, this year it is New Hyde Park Road and School Street.
Depends on the configuration, hazardousness, and traffic/pedestrian volume. If a crossing has bells that sound full time, usually it's due to the station being located next to the crossing. New Hyde Park Road was busy due to New Hyde Park lacking a pedestrian overpass or tunnel to get to the other side.
If you hear the bells real closely, it makes a cool beat since they are mechanical bells. Grew up on Long Island, rode the train a lot on all the branches going 80 MPH maximum, and a huge LIRR fan. This is just one of nearly 300 grade crossings on Long Island and on the Railroad itself, with several labeled the most hazardous in the USA. Within 10-15 years they are saying this crossing will be eliminated with the road going under the tracks with a third track installed from Floral Park to Hicksville.
The crossing is officially eliminated with the road back open. It took them only from February 3rd, 2020 to August 24th, 2020 to do so. What you see here is now history, and currently where the camera is situated is where the third track will be laid on the trestle. A new traffic light for Plaza Avenue and NHP Road was built where the camera is pointing. Cars are now going underneath the tracks there as we know it. The same will happen at School Street in Westbury later this year. In 22 years, seven crossings will have been eliminated: Covert, 12th Street, NHP Road, Herricks, Roslyn Road, School, and Urban.
He probably came from Ronkonkoma because Ronkonkoma (to & from) usually don't stop at New Hyde Park it's the Huntington trains that do but you never know.

I still wonder why some crossings bells sound the full time, or only when the gates come down
