I remember as a kid I had a scanner and I could pick up my nearby McDonald's Drive thru and hear the workers talking to the drive thru customers. Also sometimes could pick up cordless house phones lol.

The old mcd drive thru operated in the 49mhz band. It was load of fun with a 6m ham radio that went out of band to place orders for people in the drive thru. Soon as the order taker stopped talking key up and order 10 big Mac 10 lerge fries and 10 large coke then unkey and listen them repeat the order back key up and say right that's all then the clerk would tell them the total and to drive forward. Used to do that at a friend's place that was close to the mcd lots of laughs.

Back in My CB days at the Mcd's Drive through, A quick whistle in the Mic would cause the Cash drawer at the till to slide open. Sometimes at the Counters as well. Discovered by accident while talking to someone while waiting ..
I had a finely tuned 108" whip on the top of an Aluminum Topper. Stock President grant (Relay board) and an old motorola Microphone which required 12vdc up the mic audio line.
That was a talking Radio for 4 Watts. Someone needed it more than I did. Never heard it on the Air around town. It had a distinct sound....

I'm quite the fan of these DSP based SW radios. I have the Xhdata D-808 which is a fantastic little set to keep in my backpack

Thanks for the teardown, it seems there is plenty of room for a replacement telescopic antenna. The dial can be retrofitted to. Not much shielding in there, Maybe some copper foil to stick to the inside of the back, might improve sensitivity or might not. I hope some manufacturers will make a leather case so it is even more stylish.

It reminds me of analog pocket radios from millions of years ago.
It looks like one of those chips under the display is a lcd driver and the lower one a system controller maybe.
Not my cup of tea, but an interesting box of tricks.

TR110 or HRD747 is a wideband radio, 530khz to 520 MHz, all mode. BL5C battery has been common for over 20 years.AM or MW antenna is at the bottom of radio, pulling in AM DX. Overall, nice radio for price.

The sellers shows us in the specs on their site it has a Bluetooth receive (speaker) option. Ofcourse some will retrofit a tiny Bluetooth transmit board inside as they did with Apple iPods. Pairing with your wireless headsets is a great (Privacy) option wich should have been standard but might have increased the already low price.

I've always been intrigued by all of the world-wide radio bands but the portable radios I've tried don't seem to bring anything in, and I don't have access to any kind of outdoor antenna system. The police scanner is a lot more fun to listen to, anyway....

The squelch doesnt seem to allow any sound through when in use... I dont get how it works. Theres some other odd unexplained settings like on SW the SSB or LSB modules.

Squelch cuts the background noise until a signal is received.
Ham Radio is single side band modulation on shortwave
Use Upper sideband for 14Mhz +
Use Lower sideband for under 14Mhz.

Where is the ferrite rod antenna at? Okay, I see it, it's on the bottom under the speaker. So remember this when you couple your loop antennas or ferrite rod couplers, you have to couple at the bottom, under the radio receiver.

    • @12voltvids

My TX is very low power.
There was a local that was running a pirate fm station around here for years. I used to listen as he or she played great music. 4 or 5 years ago it turned off. Get the feeling they got a knock at the door. They got away with it for over 20 years and I could pick that one up into the next tow. I have no idea how many watts they were running but I would guess bewween 20 and 30 based on how far the signal reached but height also plays a factor. The one I built a number of years ago is 100 mW and if I put a good antenna I might get a block or 2. I just use it to rebroadcast the commercial fm station I like to listen to but their signel is really weak to my place, but they are online. So I use one of those acrylic internet radio tuner preamp to pull the signal in and put them on at 100mW 10mhz below their assigned frequency so I can listen on any radio on the house. It fades pretty quick so I don't anticipate any trouble. In the car the station comes in just fine as soon as I get a little elevation.
