  • A whole year time-lapse of growing a cactus plant from a seed. A cactus seed was chosen randomly from a mix varieties pack. It only took about 10 days from planting to see a cactus seedling came up and 15 more days to develop the first batch of spikes. However, it was slow after that, take over a year for the cactus to be about 3 inches diameter.

    I like the random mushrooms fruiting at around 0:19 - they're some species of Coprinus :)

    It's interesting how it seems to grow very slow at first, then it speeds up in waves, then it really expands on the last month or so. Kinda different from other plants where vegetative growth is front loaded

      Does look like a saguaro but I've grown them many times before and they shouldn't ever exceed 1-2 inches on the 1st year unless grafted to pereskiopsis so they must be doing something extra

      That's a good point. They are probably doing a light cycle of around 20/4, warm temperatures, strong light and all the fertilizer one seedling with no competition could ever need. All the saguaro seedlings I have ever grown have been outside, watered but not really pampered and not transplanted until there is literally no space left to grow

    The soil level stays the same, dynamic with watering of course, but where does all the _material_ come from? Plant a fast growing vine-like plant (with the heart-shaped leaves?) and they'll grow hundreds of feet long....but again, where did all that plant material come from? The soil doesn't go down! Yes, most of it is water weight, but still, all that carbon..... how is the soil the same level? Real mystery, even though I know it's an optical illusion and that it MUST come from the soil. STILL!!??

    • @cleberandrade
      @cleberandrade ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the air, comes the CO2. From the water, H. C, O, H, that's all the life needs! The rest comes from minerals (from the water and soil)

    You should do a succulent time-lapse growing from a spare Leaf that's been shed. Because, if you pick up a little piece of cactus Leaf off the ground, you can plant it and it will grow into a new plant

    • @wickedbasket8858
      @wickedbasket8858 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nathanielvargas3863 yes you can with out those. I have none of those and I currently have 13 cactus grown from seeds and I have none of those. All you need is soil, a south facing window which sunlight comes in, and plant them early spring allowing the heat and sunlight from the window to hit the soil and they'll grow. The only thing grow lights and heating mats do is allow you to keep it growing preventing it from going through its natural dormant state during colder months. And a fan is only necessary if you have 0 air flow in your house and considering most people have ceiling fans or an a/c in their homes or they have their windows open during warmer weather it's not necessary to have a fan specifically for the cactus.

    Your substrate look far from ideal for cactus, wood bark which it looks like is a no no, any organic material you have should be fine and well draining, also this looks too organic, ideally you want max 50% peat free soil (maybe even less), mixed with perlite or preferably pumice, or both actually, maybe some horticularal grit or course sand, cacti need a really well draining soil that drys thoroughly between waterings,also teracotta pots are far better as they dry quicker are porous and don't hold as much moisture, for a seedling also i would say your pot is on the large side but that isnt as big a deal if there watered correctly and not overcared for
