    as an american, it makes me feel terrible that we're legally actual War Criminals but just too big of a bully to be held accountable.

      @David Miles You will NEVER see any American tried in The Hague as a war criminal or a person who commits crimes against humanity, EVER, as long as the U.S. Empire continues. When the U.S. Empire dies though then you will see a nuclear war or "real accountability "finally. Power over International Law- The U.S. Empire. Power trumps all.

      It's worse than painful , from the right winger church goers who think America should support Israel because the Bible says so to the Pro Israeli Hasbara students paid to comment on the internet in support of genocide. It's unacceptable. Their version of reality(lied to since this all started) is threatened so they cling to shoddy justifications to break every moral rule in the book.

    Never met a Chomsky hater that could ever make an attack on him or his readers without resorting to lies and distortions. At best you never read a single book of his; at worst you did, and still managed to completely avoid any understanding. Thanks for proving once again that the haters still have nothing to say.

    Noam Chomsky is truly a great inspiration and I recommend his books. Those of you insinuating that he doesn't know what he's talking about or that his is misleading, I would ask you who's more likely to hold those properties - the world's leading intellectual who has given his life to demistifying some of the greatest issues facing civilisation who's widely recognised as one of the greatest contributions to modern political dissidence, linguistics and philosophy... or you. Much love for Chomsky!

      To answer your question, that is why thinking was invented. Read what Thomas Sowell has to say about Chomsky. Youth is another word for inexperience.

      This comment seems to be in contradiction to Chomsky's philosophy which is about the empowerment of ordinary people in the face of large institutions that are "widely recognized". The message of his books is to think critically and research, and not to shut up and bow down to a source of information just because it is said to be reputable, as you say.

      @@asleepbydawn137 Could you clarify what he meant then? There's no reason for us to shirk back and accept what Chomsky says just because he's a "renowned academic" who has "devoted his life to study." That title applies to any number of bourgeois economists or imperialist historians too. The strength of Chomsky is however that, if we do attempt to refute his points with our own research, we come up short. Open debate is advantageous for everyone.

    Any country under occupation would react violently. Again, I never claimed to support Palestinian violence. What my position is is that Israel is violating international law, discriminating against Palestinians, and not willing to give back to the Palestinians what is rightfully theirs. I condemn Palestinian violence as much as the next, but would you expect anything less from a country under occupation? America needs to stop playing favorites with Israel. BOTH sides need to be held accountable.

    • @SagesseNoir

    For those of you criticising Noam Chomsky below - Most of what he says may sound somehow unjustified or redacted, but I don't think you can expect him to give the full detail during the lecture, though if you wish to understand the issues, read the massive plethora of books he has written which go into a huge amount of detail. What he says is based on a massive amount of knowledge. Noam Chomsky is recognised as one of the world's greatest intellectuals, if not the greatest.

      Yes, this. He's said that it's hard to be as thorough as he'd like to be in lectures because he'd have to mention a ton of footnotes for everything. His books are a real gold mine.

    This was an incredibly informative lecture and despite the enormously depressing nature of its subject-matter, Noam still provided a strong measure of hope and inspiration. As for Israel, it's foundation is based on an ugly sin committed on Nabka Day. It is inevitable that Israel will collapse from the weight of its own dichotomies. Most importantly, it cannot exist simultaneously as both a Jewish State and a fundtional democracy. JMHO

      @John Sinclair Well .... being say a WASP criticizing Israel has not generally gone well. Noam actually went over to Israel and lived on a kibbutz and did farm work and all that. He came from pretty humble beginnings, the Great Depression was in full swing, and he remembers one family member who was very lucky to be disabled because NYC had a program where disabled people got preference in operating news stands. I believe Noam often watched the news stand and got a lot of reading in as a kid this way.
      As humble as his beginnings were, he grew up in an era where upward mobility was a real thing in the US. Unless you were a total fuckup, you were up on the up escalator, socially and financially. Yes, up through the 1970s Jews were restricted in where they could live, where they could go, etc in the US but in NYC where Noam was, it was less of a problem. And he went to MIT because they were a lot less restrictive about allowing Jews in.
      In his time school and college were cheap! If your parents were janitors, anything, they could support you and you could go all the way up to PhD. And Jewish parents, like all non-WASP parents, help their kids. Noam was allowed to live at home instead of being kicked out at age 18 etc which is the hyper-individualistic "American way".
      Of course now the only social mobility in the US is downward, but I have gotten over the resentment I felt, of Noam the richie-rich college professor, because if I'd been born into his world I'd have risen up too - and I'm not Jewish. Also Noam has written a hell of a lot of books and extremely good ones too, and the royalties from those add up.
      It's simply that from 1935-1975 you didn't need to be born into riches to stay out of poverty; just be a decent person and you'd rise up!

    Perhaps he would be more to your liking if instead of criticizing the atrocities committed by his own state and it's proxies, he mindlessly cheered them on, as most public intellectuals (the kind you no doubt, admire), do. But of course, for people that know and understand anything about the real world, that would be a monumental loss. You have plenty of cheerleaders of mass murder to admire. Those who prefer human decency over state worship will continue reading Chomsky.

      Balfour was apparently anti-semitic and thought Zionism and Palestine a good way of ridding Europe of Jews. A disliked man. Lloyd George sympathised with Jews equating them similarly oppressed like the Welsh.
      Ever the Imperialist Pragmatist, however he thought a Europeanised people would provide a guard dog for the fear of ever present, of an Egyptian takeover of the Suez Canal. Stalin was the first to recognise Israel and supply them with Czech arms. Thinking that Zionism having a Utopian Socialist wing and being gratefull to the Red Army,preventing annihillation of all Europe's Jews.
      The Arabs were thought 2nd rate. Zionism sided with the USA. The Arabs were betrayed by everyone. The hideous Maelstrom continues with unending horror for the people of the near and middle east. Including Jewish Working Class.
      The Arab and Jewish workers are the key to a solution. They have little to lose!

      I don't get why some people think Chomsky is a great US foreign policy thinker. What he does is really easy and simple: 1.) Look for atrocities committed by the US in other countries. (You can find all about COINTELPRO, Vietnam, East Timor, etc. even in Wikipedia, even when he claims that the US government doesn't want us to know about it, ironic) 2.) Write them down in a book, or say them in an interview or documentary, and then, the most important thing: 3.) Claim moral superiority over others and feel really good about yourself. Done.

      The articles regarding COINTELPRO, East Timor, Vietnam, etc. do not cite him in the least. Remember he is a linguist who in his free time bashes the US foreign policy, and he has plenty of free time, if you know what I mean. You are giving him too much credit. The fact that this information is easily found contradicts his claims that the US government doesn't want us to know about its atrocities. There are many websites which have the same information about US atrocities and that can be access freely by a click of a button.

    • @Johnny-kn3vs
      @Johnny-kn3vs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Carlos Fdz How many ppl "in the right mind" go and look or would care to look about these issues. I quote, "in the right mind" because the average American would have to presuppose there is something wrong in our policies. That there's something not right about wishing isolation rather than openly embrace other cultures. The average American would never imagine that we sponsor, manufacture and ship terrorism under the slogan, "war on terror" and that in fact we are a terror state. The average American would never learn about this in the local morning or evening news and as long as we think we are as righteous as our parents, teachers, espiritual lay leader and/or political figures ought us to be, then we would live in this blis unbeknown to what is happening at the global scale. Yes, he shines light and expose everything in black and white with enough detail, it makes anyone feel morally obligated to go out of their comfort zone and question what was previously forbidden to question, forbidden to ourselves due to ignorance. (Many ppl would rather live blissfully afraid the answers would force them to change their stand point). He deserves credit and more, no doubt about it.

  • @Englishdosser86
    @Englishdosser86 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @011jaffa I agree that there is a lot of anti-semitism in the Arab world. Some of the people in power are terrible individuals who are very racist. You also have to understand that the creation of Israel and the actions of the Israeli people have had a large part to play on the size and ferocity of their anti-semitism. This does not excuse Arab prejudice, but it also does not excuse Israel`s actions.

  • @Englishdosser86
    @Englishdosser86 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @011jaffa ...that their parents and grandparents have suffered through and finally they will not be able to renegotiate further for the land and compensation which if there was justice, they should have already received.
    For you to insinuate that because they did not accept the Israeli offer is absurdly unfair. One could easily say that if the Israelis truly wanted peace, then they would have offered more, such as the full return of the land that they are illegally occupying for a start.

    @011jaffa The question that you keep asking is: what should have been done regarding the creation of Israel. There were three options that I can see: 1. the Jews could have stayed in the countries where they were (which millions have still done - in fact the US population of Jews is about equivalent to Israel) 2, Formed a Jewish state in a different location (but the Zionists did not want this) 3. Created Israel in a form that was accepted by the Palestinian people.

    @011jaffa Yup the UN had a vote. All the countries surrounding Palestine, including the Palestinians weren't happy with it but they were over-ruled by the Western powers. Simply because there are other Arab states does not give justification for displacing a population from their homes and imposing another political power.
    If you're asking what would have happened to the Jewish people, well they would have stayed where they were before the moved to Israel.

    @011jaffa If you want to disprove Chomsky's pretty much encyclopaedic knowledge of the issue, then by all means try. But I know that you can not and will not. Instead, you have resorted to petty name calling. I -as you can probably guess- have no respect for this type of argumentation.

    @011jaffa This resolution grants 22% of Palestine (a large decrease from the 45% originally declared in the creation of Israel) to return to the Palestinians and gives them political sovereignty. It would require Israel to return land that it has obtained illegally through wars and annexation. It refuses to do this. Instead, it systematically expands further into the occupied territories.

    @nunswithguns33 Thanks for the input and of course you'd think you're not being biased (as would I), but with all due respect, I think I'll take Noam Chomsky's, Norman Finkelstein's and Amnesty International's word for it. Thank you!

    @011jaffa They are neighbours. They will always be next to each other. If you look at the map, the walls cut deep into their land, often recapturing precious resources so that only Israelis can use them. In essence, it is being used as an excuse to deprive them of more territory and further subjugate them.

    The Arab states have repeatedly offered to recognize Israel, nomalize relations, even develope trade negotiations. However this is about Palestine, not other Arabs states. I don't believe any other Arab states are illegally occupying land and transferring their citizenry to the aforementioned land. One of the problems the UN faces is its inability to interfere in what's determined sovereign state of affairs within a country's own borders, without consensus of the Security Council.

    Noam Chomsky - US/ Israeli Crimes Against Palestine

  • @Englishdosser86
    @Englishdosser86 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @011jaffa There is a big difference between loving a country and hating their policies. I love the UK, but I think some of its foreign policy is disgusting. Trying to advocate change through criticism does not undermine how I feel about it. It is a necessary part of making the world a better place. If I do nothing, then I give implicit support for my governments actions. It is a point the Chomsky consistently states about the US. He is responsible for US foreign policy as all its citizens are.

    @011jaffa Give me statistics. For some reason, you believe that your anecdotal evidence is an accurate portrayal of all people. IT IS NOT. It makes you sound ridiculous. Like your absurd comment about seeing Palestinian towns grow over large areas with your own eyes.
    Frankly I think all religions are absurd. Islam, Judaism and Christianity. All of them. Christianity was just as bad as Islam for 1800 years. Only relatively recently has it improved.
