Epic stuff. :) I can even imagine if George Lucas saw it, he'd be like, OMG now I have to remake all of them in light of this.

Now that’s how Vader should of acted, you can see and feel the rage and emotion from him.
Obiwan is both a reminder of who he was and was destined to be, and also of what he had lost. His wife, potential child, and the possibility to reforge the galaxy to his own Empire, where he believed he could bring peace, and prosperity. This is the man that put him in this excruciating suit and took away his true powers potential 20 years prior.

I just love how it incorporates the information about Vader and Obi-Wan that was added over the years. Vader was highly skilled in Form 5 (focused on offense and countering), tainted by his Dark Side anger. Obi-Wan was a master of Form 4, one of the best defensive forms, only hampered by his advancing age. This fight really shows that. Despite the brutality of Vader's attacks, he couldn't land a solid hit during the whole fight. Obi-Wan suffered some minor injuries due to unexpected unarmed and Force attacks, but he always recovered before Vader could capitalize.

Well Hayden quit acting and bought a ranch, and has to tell the 'fans' how much he loves them all at the Disney events even though they were pretty unkind to him at the time, even Natalie didn't emerge unscathed and remember Ahmed Best? He's more than done his time with a choreographer and seems to have turned a new page in his life and moved on. Jake Lloyd had it worse, after serving 10 months in jail, he ended up in a mental facility, then his sister died; poor kid time has not been kind to him. Dave would have enjoyed acting this fight himself back in the day but apparently kept breaking the props so ended up being sidelined in many of the action scenes.

The original is supposed to mimic Japanese style fights but it doesn't make sense to the story though. Obi-Wan was one of the greatest Jedi Masters to ever live, and was said to be an absolute master of the form he used.
Also in Rebels he ends the fight against Maul with 3 moves. He was way more skilled than what the OT shows, and this reimagining goes after a more canon approach.
Heck we even see with Rogue One (which leads right into New Hope) that Vader was still an absolute beast, and this reimagining just adds to that.

Looking back on this 42 year-old sequence, remade anew as it was, I just had the somber realization that, of the 9 people who played named characters, those still alive are now in the minority:
Obi-Wan's actor--dead for quite a while. (Of course, he was already old in 1977, so no surprise there.)
Vader's physical actor--dead sometime before Phantom Menace.
R2-D2's actor--dead prior to Rogue One.
Leia's actress--dead shortly before Episode 8 filming wrapped up.
Chewbacca's actor--dead less than a week before this TH-cam video was uploaded.
Only Luke's, Han's, and C-3PO's actors, along with Vader's voice actor, are still alive--and, despite clearly looking old now, Mark Hamill is the _youngest_ of those four.

The stunt man in the Darth Vader suit might have been young enough to do a more physical lightsaber duel, but he was practically blind inside that helmet. Between the dark lenses over his eyes and the lack of peripheral vision we were lucky that the lightsaber battles between Vader and Luke were as action packed as they were (likely due in a large part to Mark Hamil being younger, more athletic and mobile at the time).

Darth Vader was a death machine, the OT was the only place where he looked slow and weak, even in the comics he's portrayed as an unstoppable juggernaut, an army of one. he was also more or less the same age in the OT as mace windu was in the clone wars, and mace was no slouch. Vader was arguably the greatest (or at least one of the greatest) lightsaber duelist of his age. this is the perfect portrayal of Vader, and it's consistent with the comics and later movies, it's absolutely grand.

Just saw this myself. This feels right. Obviously very fan film still, but Vader is finally....FINALLY getting his revenge...his life has been waiting for this moment...the energy and hatred that fuels him...this is his moment, so it makes sooo much more sense for this to have taken place, not a quiet gentlemen like duel (though when I was a kid I thought that fight meant that Vader as much as he hates his old master, respected him and maybe was a little afraid of him, though he still felt confident that he always had the upper hand and could end it at any time, so was toying with him in a way, but turned out he was the one getting toyed with). But this really has a lot of emotion that feels very in line with these two people meeting again after all these years, and the Jedi Hunt. Very powerful. But can you imagine what would have been had this been how it was shown to people in '77? The audience would have needed counselling with how badly their minds would have been blown by this movie. People were already loosing there minds over it as it was. Darth Vader and Obi-Wan would have been legends upon legends and this last duel between the final members of the old ways would have cemented how powerful Jedi were back in their hey day. Love this fan remake.

Actually it was because Vaders greatest lose was to Obi-Wan and he had already adapted his style to protect his most vulnerable point (his chest piece), he wasn't going to make the same mistake of underestimating Obi-Wan again. From Obi-Wans view he knew he couldn't win the duel this time and just needed to use his mastery of his defensive form to give Luke, Han, Chewie and Leia to escape. He took Maul out with a single move on Tatooine...so not much to do with age. Also saying Vader was older and slower than in a New Hope makes no sense, he would of been roughly the same age as Mace Windu in his prime also look at the power on Darth Tyrannus and sidious in their advanced age. Simple reason was the Glass lightsabers used bk in the 70's couldn't be swung or even touch each other as they would shatter. When I watch this Saga with any newbie I show them this reimagined edit just like I'll show them the Darth maul fan film and The vader fan films...and no I don't coun't any of the disney live movies as actual STAR WARS!

Actually the reasoning behind why those two were so slow paced was because vader was cautious and actually obi wan is more powerful than when he was younger he may be old but he is no push over, vader knew that any mistake would be his last so he wanted to be precise but obi wan sacrificed himself so the others could leave but without seeing the body vader was terrified because now obi wan had made good on his promise of becoming stronger than he could imagine since obi wan became a force ghodt

There is one gap in the screenshot - when the door are getting closed (sry for grammar) Vader's lightsaber is activated on the old footage, but, when the look is at Vader's room from inside of it and door are getting closed, his lightsaber is excluded, althought there was no sound of turn it off and it wasn't showed at all. Ive found it after watching this about 50 times in another ppl reactions :D

the reason the og fight was slow is because they blades of sabre shattered like glass so they couldnt even make contact with the blades if not it would of been more like when luke fights vader and not so robotic and slow it was due to technology thats all in the og fight the blades never make contact but the glow of their sabre was used too hide that fact

“Gospel or Canon, as we refer to it, includes the screenplays, the films, the radio dramas and the novelizations. These works spin out of George Lucas' original stories, the rest are created by other writers. However between us, we've read everything and much of it is taken into account in the overall continuity." - Sue Rostoni, Lucas Books and Lucas Licensing Managing Editor and Allan Kausch Continuity Editor for Lucasfilm, Star Wars Insider 23 Fall of 1994
"Continuity has been the supreme commandment at Lucasfilm for Shadows and all its Star Wars projects. The company had made the decision to not only expand its universe but have it unfold as a seamless chronicle. Whether a new star system is explored in a novel or a scene is set in ancient Jedi days from a comic series, nothing can contradict the history or logic of what has gone before.
To keep it all straight there is 'The Canon', a timeline of major events and lifespan of main characters prepared by the continuity editors of Lucasfilm and considered the in-house bible of the Star Wars universe." - Mark Cotta Vaz, The Secrets of Shadows of the Empire, 1996
“Everyone in the content-creating galaxy of Star Wars has a copy of “The Bible,” a burgeoning canonical document (currently a hundred and seventy pages long) that is maintained by “continuity editors” Allan Kausch and Sue Rostoni. It is a chronology of all the events that have ever occurred in the Star Wars universe, in all the films, books, CD-roms, Nintendo games, comic books, and role-playing guides, and each medium is seamlessly coordinated with the others.””-Tom Dupree, editor for Bantam Spectra Star Wars books article from the New Yorker, Why the force is still with us, January 6, 1997
"Everything that (is approved) by Lucasfilm is official. No matter how small the contribution, we've added to the well,"- Peter Schweighofer‏, author for the EU, Star Wars Galaxy Collector magazine #1 by Topps, 1998
“According to Lucas Licensing Editor Sue, Rostoni, ‘Canon refers to an authoritative list of books that Lucas Licensing editors consider an authentic part of the official Star Wars history. Our goal is to present a continuous and unified history of the Star Wars galaxy, insofar as that history does not conflict with, or undermine the meaning of Mr. Lucas’s Star Wars saga of films and screenplays.’ Things that Lucas Licensing does not consider official parts of the continuous Star Wars history show an Infinities logo or are contained in Star Wars Tales. Everything else is considered canon.”-Sue Rostoni, Lucas Books and Lucas Licensing Managing Editor, in Star Wars gamer #6, July 1, 2001
“Basically, everything except those items marked with an “Infinity” logo (i.e. the Star Wars Tales comics) is considered canon.”-Sue Rostoni, Lucas Books and Lucas Licensing Managing Editor, Starwars.com May 30, 2003
“”Lucasfilm canon” refers to anything produced by any of the Lucas companies, whether it be movies, books games or internet. “Movie canon” is only what you see and hear in the Star Wars films”- Leland Chee, Continuity Database administrator aka Keeper of the Holocron for Lucas Licensing, Starwars.com May 30, 2003
Continuity vs canon) “Its pretty much the same-sounds better to say that we try to maintain the continuity of the universe, rather than saying the canon of the universe”- Sue Rostoni, Lucas Books and Lucas Licensing Managing Editor, on Starwars.com September 2003
“When asked if the G and C-levels formed separate and independent canon, Chee responded by stating that both were part of a single canon: “There is one overall continuity.”"-Leland Chee, Continuity Database administrator aka Keeper of the Holocron for Lucas Licensing, on Starwars.com August 4, 2004
“The concept of an expanded universe certainly isn’t unique to star wars. Many popular genre properties from Star Trek to Alien, release spin off tales that shed light on events not seen in the official narrative. But Star Wars EU is unique both in its size and its care which is in the narrative which is shepherd and organized and Star Wars the Expanded universe is official.” -Daniel Wallace, Author for the Expanded Universe, Star wars insider 101 May 2008

i think they moved that slow in the original because of the lightsabers being fragile and it would be really hard for editors to draw in the lights that come from the saber during a fight

Alec didn't like Star Wars at all. It's popularity overshadowed some of his great performances over the years. Still, he took his role (like all of his roles) seriously. He wanted the duel between Obi-Wan and Vader to be more energetic and entertaining to audiences. However, the technology of the practical effects wouldn't really allow it. The original version of the film actually showed the reflective dust on the saber prop blades falling off like smoke when Alec and David got too aggressive with the saber clashes. The practical effects team would have to remind them to be careful. Thankfully the technology for the practical effects needed for the lightsabers was improved in the later films. This allowed for more engaging duels in Episodes 5 and especially 6. I'd like to think that Alec would have enjoyed this reimagined iconic duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader.

I dont think being old is the reason behind the original fight scene i guess its the technology, you cant see properly in vaders helmet and the actor for kenobi is old...but not being old as Obi Wan Kenobi...because samurai masters are still good or better when they age (experience in the battle)

    • @lukebell4738

It's because the prop lightsabers would break if put under too much stress back then. Newer movies fixed this problem.

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is in his 40s in 'A New Hope'.
Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi is in his 50s in 'A New Hope'.
Obi-Wan is old but not too old and Anakin is still in a age that could fight like that so to say that "they are too old" is BS.
Anakin could still fight awesomely in the Vader robot costume not just in retcons but in 'The Empire Strikes Back' & 'Return of the Jedi'.
Vader is a Sith not a Jedi.
Plural of Jedi is Jedi not Jedis.
This re-imagining makes more sense than the actual scene in 'A New Hope'.

Not trying to be a bitch, but the reason they weren't able to make the lightsaber battles flasshy was because of the lightsaber probs they used and also the time period and they were also going with a more samurai sword fight. I mean if they would of lets say made episode one first and that was made in 99 like it was i think the whole series would be way different. I think we would have darth Jar Jar and when we got to ep 4 the fight would of be so amazing.

*Could this more intense duel have been done in 1977 (even if we omitted the CGI + effects-heavy stunts and had the real actors working with stunt doubles) with the tech. & budget back then?*
*1) The original lightsabers were far too fragile-* They'd have immediately broken with such powerful contact. Lucas & company struggled to make the ones they had work just for what we got.
According to behind-the-scenes discussions, they were frequently a pain to work with, as was the rotoscoping process. The technology was still new and took considerable experimentation.
*2) The script-* As DeanBarry pointed out (though most fans know by now), this particular duel was designed to homage traditional Japanese sword-fighting between two older, slower samurai.
Obviously, this is NOT to say that the Kendo style itself can't be fast. Plenty of at least semi-realistic onscreen samurai duels, while similarly brief & methodical, manage to reach a lightning-fast pace.
On paper, even with older actors, this is possible with the right execution. Nonetheless, that wasn't the point of THIS fight and any change to the pace or speed would've conflicted with that vision.
*3) Limited production time-* Let's say Lucas & company had written the duel to be faster and had the resources + choreographers to work in younger stunt doubles with Alec Guinness' footage.
Stunts, wire-work, re-shoots & editing alone would've taken much more time/effort (weeks at minimum) to make this complex sequence seamless enough to immerse viewers in the illusion.
On top of that, you'd then have to move on to finish everything else. *Star Wars'* production was already under pressure at the time, and extending the duel to this degree would've added too much work.
*Verdict: No, this duel couldn't have been done in 1977 even with necessary tech. + resources.*
