I think the reason for the backs of buildings being modeled is that when in the terraforming mode, standing directly behind a building (as well as cliffs) shifts the camera angle to a bird's eye view. Even thoigh you still can't really see the back side of the buildings in this view, they probably modeled it just in case.
The bamboo baby actually has a cool backstory, it’s a reference to an old japanese story about a wood chopper who cuts a bamboo tree and finds a baby inside it, the baby ends up to be the daughter of the moon gods and ends up leaving her family to leave in the moon as a goddess.

There was a video made trying to reach across the isle with Nintendo regarding the take down that you may have all seen. That video is now unlisted as Nintendo has chosen to release the claim. I want to thank you all for your encouragement, support, and sympathy during this whole experience. Please enjoy the video :)
The Tanuki statue is censored, the balls are there but they are just a smooth round ball. Imo it's art as well and should be fully modelled accurately with the balls.
I'd guess this is because the villager is meant to be a child. David statue depicts an adult, and it's classical well-known art, so censoring that would look more out of place than anything else. The tanuki statue... well, Tom Nook gets lonely sometimes.
There would most likely be nothing inside, it would just be like a normal villager model but with a zipper modeled on the back, if there was another character model inside of him, we would most likely already know via the character model clipping through the bunny costume, I wish there was a character modeled underneath though, it would be a nice detail
I think they fully modeled backs of buildings because when you're in "island designer mode" behind a building, the camera pans up to right above the player so you can see what you're editing. This camera only happens when you're behind a building or a cliff in this mode
@@NoArtisticLimitation the story of Momotarō I believe! thats the japanese folklore story that starts with a baby boy being found in a giant peach for anyone else who didnt know!!
Cheren you’re correct! Momotaro is born to a childless couple from a peach and it’s kinda like a Tom Thumb situation. He eventually becomes a princess’ guard and is later bestowed the Lucky Mallet to change him to the size of a normal child. That’s really oversimplified, but yeah, in a nutshell
Hi there! I'm a game developer and can share with you my theory about all these models that are fully modelled, even on the back side. ACNH is the first game in the series to use realtime lighting, which means dynamic shadows. In most 3D engines, the back side of any polygon is gonna be ignored when rendering lighting and shadows. This is commonly called backface culling. In order to get the buildings and some other objects to properly project a drop shadow when the sun is behind them, there needs to be geometry facing out! It doesn't have to be detailed, just a simple quad does the job. One exception here is on the tree leaves, which are, as you can see, flat 2D textures that still render from both sides and still project shadows. This is done at the shader level, where both the lighting, and color rendering is defined, as well as the movement from the wind. For the fixed camera buildings, it's a different story. The lighting is most likely pre-computed (it's called baking), you still need all the faces in order to generate the shadows properly. Once the baking is done though, these back faces can be removed to save rendering time. I hope this helped! Cheers
Correct, its just strange that looks like its just terrain. Which doesn't amount to much in terms of resources. Id rather have the clearly superior flat land view with noticeable fade in culling. Thats how most all other Switch games are anyway.
7:00 The baby inside of the peach is a reference to Momotarō, a Japanese folklore hero. An old childless couple found a peach floating down a river, out of which popped a little baby boy. They named him Momotarō because it basically means "Peach Boy". He later goes on an adventure to save his land from demons by going to their island and defeating them. He befriends a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant along the way and they help him with his quest. The baby inside of the bamboo comes from "The Legend of the Bamboo Cutter"/"The Tale of Princess Kaguya". In it, an old man finds a weird shining bamboo stalk. When he cuts it, he finds a tiny little baby girl, whom he names Nayotake no Kaguya-hime ("Shining Princess of the Young Bamboo"). Kaguya grows up to become a beautiful young woman, and all the popular boys want her, especially the Emperor of Japan. Kaguya turns them all down and says "btw I come from the moon, I gotta go home lmao" and peaces out to the moon. She gives the Emperor an elixir of immortality, which he has burned on the highest mountain - it's believed that the word for immortality ("fushi") became the name for Mt. Fuji.
I would be interested to see if there was anything different going on when you first open the game and Isabelle gives you the morning announcements. Great video as always!
Isabelle's announcements take place on a separate map internally called "OfficeDemo". This is an almost identical copy of the Resident Services building you can visit, except Tom Nook's laptop lid is shut and the corridor passageway the player enters from is removed entirely.
Here’s an idea for you, Shesez: find someone who hasn’t upgraded the museum to include the art portion yet and look to see if there’s a black box where that will inevitably be. Theory for the house backs: They are modelled on the backside because they still have collision, and AC probably has collision detection based on world geometry. Since the engine won't render textures if they are hidden, the devs could keep them textured to help them visualize where the player is stopped by them, and since they don't have exclusive textures that would also not take any extra space. In the case of the trees, they're too tall for the grove to affect player collision, so they only needed to worry about the trunk (which is also modeled and textured all the way round).
was going to suggest this too see you got before me. Not 100% but colition boxes/planes are still technically part of the world and I would guess that putting a texture+collision on all 5 part of a box is you know barely any extra processes vs just having texture on 4 part and collision on 5. especially when several of the buildings looks like they only have "Gouraud" shading on them(not 100% if that's the correct name). Im using Gouraud to refer to a polygon (in this case the flat plane that makes up the backside of a building) revising a Red,Green,Blue value. by default a polygon is made of 3 points in a space whit 3 lines going between them A goes to B, A to C and the other way around. the part inside this get filled creating a triangle on the screen. normally if you leave it color data blank its grey/black or white. now a smart person give the Polygon a color so even if the texture don't load for a reason it still have a somewhat correct look to it. like the grassy ground been plain green instead of grey. until the texture of green grass loads. in fact you might order the system to not put texture on anything far away and just let the basic mono colors of the polygons do the job. and on a grass field from really far away it will do the job more then well enough to sell the illusion... plus it always a good backup if anything goes wrong. you can in fact see this in action in a lot of games if you play it on a slow hard drive. where the player spawn and a brick wall at first is just a plain red wall then a blurry red brick texture appers and later a full brick texture gets loaded and it looks stunning. (all this in the span of about 1 to 3 seconds).
Faulty theory my dude. As mentioned in this very video, Animal Crossings past history proves you dont need to have textures on the back of houses. Which also disproves the notion that its needed for collision
@@BoundaryBreak I didn't say the textures were needed, just that the geometry was. The geometry can have no texture, but maybe the developers just didn't think it would make that much difference in terms of performance and it would help them visualize the houses more easily in their editor. It's also not entirely out of the question that they could have changed their design philosophy or game engine over the years. I can't say much more as I don't have all that much experience, and the only way to know for sure would be to ask them.
I think it's because of the fancy new shadows, which would explain why previous titles didn't have geometry for the rear side of objects. Almost all games use a technique called "shadow mapping" to render shadows, which works by rendering the depth information (how far each pixel is from the camera) of the whole scene from the perspective of a light source (in this case the sun), and then comparing that to the depth information of the player's camera after doing some math magic. Since the sun can go behind objects, the rear side still has to exist, otherwise the shadows could break completely. It's still textured, but polygons that face away from the camera don't get shaded so there's little to no performance impact there. Probably easier for the artists to just leave the whole thing textured.
At the able sister's, I went to a friend's island, and I told him to go inside the changing room while I looked by the corner of the portal... And surprize surprise, the model disappears, I think that the changing room is a separate room and that the model gets called to said room, not a projected 2d model... Huh...
I’m convinced the black boxes could be where cutaways take place, for example isabelles black box is the amiibo card cutscenes, like how you’re implying the changing room one is the changing room. It would be great to find out!
The bamboo and peach dolls are references to the Japanese legends of princess Kaguya and Momotaro respectively, which start with... exactly what you see, the namesake of their stories being born out of the plant the object represents
4:58 It’s possible that the stars aren’t independent objects, but rather, a second sky dome layered over the main one that’s mostly transparent, except for the stars.
the circle in the aquarium part of the museum is where the moon jellyfish appear when you catch them in the new update that lets you swim and catch sea creatures
Actually, Wilber was talking about you being a spy. That is the lazy villagers’ dialog. Just wanted to put that out there. Edit: also it’s possible to get a look of what happens in the changing station if you take out your camera, angle it up as much as possible while somebody is going in, and you can see that the villager disappears, and when they come out, they reappear.
Pretty sure the black boxes behind the doors are meant to be "other room" darkness for if they decide to add a cutscene involving an NPC coming from those doors. No idea about the changing room though, maybe there will be something involving the mirror back there and some mystical run in with Katrina or Serena?
The back of the houses being modeled might be because of fences if you make the camera go at a face down perspective and going behind them while trying to build fences will make go even further
The buildings having the back side modelled in is explained by how rendering and lighting works in 3D games. It's to avoid lights bleeding and other weird rendering glitches
I wish you the best man, you’re doing all this effort for us and it’s one of the best video concepts on TH-cam, keep doing those, I’m pretty sure everything will get back into order ! ❤️🔥
The bamboo baby you mentioned/were confused about at around 6:55 is a reference to The Tale Of The Bamboo Cutter, which is a pretty quintessential folktale in Japan. Studio Ghibli actually adapted the story a few years back into a film called The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya. Definitely worth watching if you like Studio Ghibli, it's absolutely without a doubt one of their most underrated and breathtaking films, especially because its art/animation style is meant to look like a Japanese scroll painting come to life.
I believe that the black boxes are used as a fail-safe. If the skybox behind the door isn't black, the black box will keep the player from seeing the skybox. It was probably put in many areas, even if they have a black skybox, as a fail-safe.
Holy cow! Seems like Animal Crossing has a TON of hidden mysteries and secrets! Anyways, I love your channel and videos, Shesez! Keep up the amazing work! :)
theory for black boxes: at one point a certain character would've been programmed to enter the door, and the black box is just what you see when they enter, but idk about the changing room tho, maybe a villager would've been able to go in the changing room, but was probably removed if somebody wanted to enter but they're blocking it.
This is very much likely the case. If the external walls are removed, the insides of these black boxes are fully textured to match the walls and floors of the building. The back of the door is also fully textured. I looked around for files associated with these maps but didn't find any animations for the door opening.
Neko Michi ah, that’s what I expected. They were all in places that seemed to me to be the places that the relevant NPC’s would go to sleep or whatever. It was a nice touch even without any actual use, since it shows that the shopkeepers are living on the island too, just like you and your neighbors.
Watching again on the various accounts in our home to try and get you the views you deserve! Keep up the amazing work, and you best believe I shared this across my Slavk and Discords with my buds 💪
Could the black boxes inside the shops be for teleportation when the character loads in? Similarly to how there are black boxes beneath each map in borderlands to load the player into the area? It's interesting they're behind doors specifically though!
If you do a part 3, I'd be interested in seeing some out-of-bounds angles of the animated/paralaxing walls or floors in game, like the cityscape wall or galaxy flooring. Speaking of galaxies, if you could time it right, I'd love a closer look at the shooting stars!
Fun fact: The baby inside the peach surprise box is Momotaro aka Peach Boy aka a kid that was born from a peach and goes on to fight oni. The baby in the bamboo shoot is Princess Kaguya, a girl from the moon who's born from a shining bamboo shoot. Both of them are characters from Japanese folklore so it's neat seeing them referenced.
14:38 To see the window in the indoor part of the bugs section, go to the bit with the centipede and moth and there's a window there, and u can see the sky and grass texture
Nintendo: You get full 3D model *You get full 3D model* Employees: Maybe we should take all this time we waste making 3D models of invisible for player things to add more features- Nintendo: *EVERYONE GETS FULL 3D MODEL*
The bamboo and peach surprise boxes each has a baby in it because they’re both based on separate Japanese folklores. If anyone is interested the peach is based on “Momotaro” (A boy who befriends some animals to fight off demons) and the bamboo is “Kaguya hime” (A princess from the Moon, mysteriously placed on Earth). They both were discovered in their respective, uh, fruit/vegetation as babies.
I got so used to the intro that I always say “where we basically take the camera, anywhere we want, and we try and find secrets and new discoveries to some of our favorite games.”
I think the black boxes could be the screens for smaller things? The one in the Able Sisters could be the area where you can try on clothes, the one in Redd’s shop could be where you get a closer look at paintings, and I’m unsure, but the other one in the Able sisters could be the online code searcher thing, and the one in town hall could be the ATM? Just a theory. Edit: Another idea, the black box in town hall could be where Isabelle does her daily announcements.
I think the reason objects aren't all just hollowed out in the back anymore is because there are now real-time shadows. If objects were just hollow on the back then it wouldn't cast shadows properly. So just a super basic flat back is good enough, which explains why the tree just have that simple flat back, because at least it's something that can cast a shadow.
Once I had a nightmare about trespassing the bounds of my animal crossing village and the more steps I took away from the limit into the prohibited zone, the more I felt a growing overwhelming fear and pressure on me, and the corners of my vision were getting darker, I also was moving very slowly and coun't go back to safety anymore. that was weird and unsettling to say the least
I think the reason for the backs of buildings being modeled is that when in the terraforming mode, standing directly behind a building (as well as cliffs) shifts the camera angle to a bird's eye view. Even thoigh you still can't really see the back side of the buildings in this view, they probably modeled it just in case.

Works the same with villager houses

I'm going to guess the circle on the floor is going to house some of the new sea creatures introduced in July
That would be cool and sounds pretty likely
you were right. The circle houses moon jellyfish!
I bet it was the "naked villager" that set nintendo off more than anything else
God this just makes me want an Animal Crossing game with full camera controls. That flat world honestly looks so cool.
Lazy villager with Cranky voice?
@@Srcsqwrn Wilbur's voice is deep. So whenever he uses lazies lines his voice is deep.
Pretty sure the black boxes behind the doors are meant to be "other room" darkness for if they decide to add a cutscene involving an NPC coming from those doors. No idea about the changing room though, maybe there will be something involving the mirror back there and some mystical run in with Katrina or Serena?
6:10 "It's you, with the shirt!"
what a time to say that line
Dobie: "It's you! With the shirt!"
Villager: 80% nude.
The back of the houses being modeled might be because of fences if you make the camera go at a face down perspective and going behind them while trying to build fences will make go even further
Exactly what I thought!
You mean further then in build mode? I never tested that
"it's you with the shirt!"

Funny that the answer to 12:54 now has been given with the summer diving update, as that is where the moon jellyfish goes 😄
The circle on the floor in the museum is a tank for jellyfish
“There’s literally nothing to look at in the art room”
Wow what a surprise
Happens when Redd only comes every 87 years.
6:54 the bamboo doll is actually a reference to the Japanese story of Princess Kaguya, who was found inside a bamboo stalk when a man cut it open

no, they're gonna be in a different tank, it was in the video

It was probably put in many areas, even if they have a black skybox, as a fail-safe.

this video just makes me sad that new horizons DIDNT have a free camera, look at how good it looks!!
4:05 maybe they just designed the buildings with ability to turn them in mind, but then decided against it
theory for black boxes:
at one point a certain character would've been programmed to enter the door, and the black box is just what you see when they enter, but idk about the changing room tho, maybe a villager would've been able to go in the changing room, but was probably removed if somebody wanted to enter but they're blocking it.

Ah yes, when the villager’s underwear is removed, it becomes a naked monk
Ok but what about clotheless villagers?, do they have models under their outfits like the player does?, what about the kangaroos and their cubs?
i'll put it into part 3
Internally the animal villagers don't have clothes or censor bars, and are fully modelled. Kangaroos and their cubs are one singular model.
The black boxes are for whenever a character would have to use a door, potentially for future updates.
11:46 - Tom Nook: What the F**k?” Seconds later* “Meh, this is normal.”
This is such an unbelievably well made video, I expected just standard free camera exploration but this felt super well produced. Wonderful work dude!

The space under the circle in the museum aquarium is for moon jellyfish! Its looks really cool with them swimming about underneath your feet.

Nintendo: *EVERYONE GETS FULL 3D MODEL*
Nintendo: 3D models > quality of life features
The bamboo and peach surprise boxes each has a baby in it because they’re both based on separate Japanese folklores. If anyone is interested the peach is based on “Momotaro” (A boy who befriends some animals to fight off demons) and the bamboo is “Kaguya hime” (A princess from the Moon, mysteriously placed on Earth). They both were discovered in their respective, uh, fruit/vegetation as babies.
Asks a kid how their field trip to the museum went. Them: 13:46
I got so used to the intro that I always say “where we basically take the camera, anywhere we want, and we try and find secrets and new discoveries to some of our favorite games.”

"Other Nook's and Crannies" Don't think I didn't notice that, Shezez
The bamboo baby is an allusion to the Japanese Folk tale of Princess Kaguya who was found by a couple in a stalk of bamboo.
